A weekly publication of Newport News Shipbuilding
U.S. Senators Tim Kaine and Roger Wicker Visit NNS Last week, Huntington Ingalls Industries hosted U.S. Senators Tim Kaine, D-Va., and Roger Wicker, R-Miss., for a tour of Newport News Shipbuilding.
VCS Achieves Superior Safety Results Over the past year, the Virginia-class Submarine (VCS) Program has reduced accidents by 40 percent. The VCS leadership team gives a lot of the credit for the improvement to its Environmental, Health, and Safety (EH&S) Task Team, led by craftsmen across all trades. One of the team’s activities is a monthly “Module of Excellence” banner presented to the area that has demonstrated outstanding safety. Members of the safety task team survey every module under construction to determine a winner and to provide feedback to others for improvement. They determine a score based on each module’s staging, line management, safety boards, housekeeping, and accidents. The most recent recipient was the sail team in the Covered Module Assembly Facility (CMAF). CMAF Safety Task Team Leader Eric Duvall (X31) said, “The Safety Task Team and upper management have been coming up with innovative ideas to make a safer work environment. Positive change can happen, and winning the Module of Excellence banner shows we are moving in the right direction.” CONTINUED ON PG 4
The senators met with shipbuilders and discussed the shipyard’s increased efficiencies and construction progress on Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) and John F. Kennedy (CVN 79). They also received progress updates on the Virginiaclass submarine program, the refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) of the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72), and the inactivation of USS Enterprise (CVN 65). “America’s Armed Forces require the best technology and tools available to complete their missions,” said Wicker, whose state is home to Newport News’ sister shipyard, Ingalls Shipbuilding. “Huntington Ingalls Industries produces the world’s most sophisticated ships, enabling our troops to remain the most well-equipped military power on Earth.” Wicker has represented Mississippi in the Senate since 2007. He is a senior member of the Armed Services Committee and chairs the Subcommittee on Seapower. Kaine was elected to the Senate in 2012 and is a member of the Armed Services Committee. The former Virginia governor has been a strong advocate for Newport News Shipbuilding. Last year he worked to secure funding for the refueling and overhaul of... CONTINUED ON PG 3

X36 Safety Lead Team Holds Monthly Meeting The Safety Lead Team for X36 Waterfront Support Services recently met to review trade processes and to identify areas for improvement within the department. “In addition to focusing on specific processes and jobs and recommending improvements, the team is also responsible for engaging and educating X36 shipbuilders about safety,” said Safety Team Leader Jason Batcha. “The team also works very closely with the X36 Ergonomic Team to help identify specific jobs within the department that could be improved with the assistance of an ergonomic evaluation to perform trend analysis on specific processes to reduce potential risk in the future.” To achieve this goal, the main team is organized into four smaller teams, each focusing on a specific area.

A Cleanliness Perception By: Tim Ketten, Propulsion Machinery, SUPSHIPNN A loss of piping system cleanliness onboard U.S. Navy ships can severely disrupt delivery to the Fleet or harm our Sailors. Since the summer of 2013, Newport News Shipbuilding implemented numerous process improvements to minimize the potential for a loss of piping system cleanliness. Some of these process improvements include: a pipefitter cleanliness qualification program, a foreign material exclusion device closure accountability program, an audit/assessment and surveillance program, and statistical methods that monitor the health of the piping system cleanliness program. Supervisor of Shipbuilding, Newport News (SUPSHIPNN) is convinced these efforts prevent damage to sensitive systems and are less expensive than costs incurred during cleanliness recovery actions and delays to schedule. NNS has invested a significant amount of time and money establishing these programs, and SUPSHIPNN acknowledges these positive efforts to improve
quality. Based on my observations of mechanics at worksites, reviewing surveillance data, and the reduced number of deficiencies found during audits and system testing, NNS’ attention to cleanliness has improved. Thank you to all NNS pipefitters and mechanics for your efforts to achieve these improvements; however, continued vigilance is necessary to maintain piping system cleanliness. Continue to work with pride, follow your procedures, and know the cleanliness acceptance criteria for the particular system you’re working. The country relies on your diligence to build clean systems and to return these vital assets to the U.S. Navy within budget and ready to accomplish their mission. Congratulations to this year’s Build Clean crossword puzzle contest winners: Christine Miller (X42), William Styron (X31), Richard Martin (O39) and Jesse Johnson (X88). Turn to p. 4 to view the answers from the contest.

...the USS George Washington (CVN 73). “I have the benefit of visiting the shipyard on a fairly regular basis, so I can appreciate the tremendous progress being made on all of the ships across the shipyard, but especially Gerald R. Ford,” Kaine said. “Senator Wicker shares my interest in shipbuilding, so I was happy to join him to meet with our shipbuilders and see first-hand all of the cost-reduction efforts being
made so that we can continue making smart investments in our national security.” Pictured on cover: U.S. Senators Tim Kaine (second from left) and Roger Wicker (center) toured NNS on July 20 and were briefed on the construction of the aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy (CVN 79). Also pictured (left to right) are Mike Butler, program director for Kennedy; NNS President Matt Mulherin; and Mike Shawcross, vice president, Kennedy construction. NNS’ Software Center of Excellence Appraised at Maturity Level 3 The NNS Software Center of Excellence (SwCoE) has been successfully appraised at Level 3 of the CMMI Institute’s Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI), opening up many growth opportunities for the group. By achieving CMMI Level 3, the SwCoE, which is part of Department E44, can pursue growth opportunities in software development for the Department of Defense and other government agencies that require the rating. CMMI is a process improvement approach that provides organizations with essential elements for processes that improve their performances. A Level 3 appraisal indicates the SwCoE’s processes are well-characterized, understood, and are described in standards, procedures, tool, and methods. According to the CMMI Institute, the benefits of using its model include improved customer
satisfaction, increased quality, and more ontime deliveries. To ready the organization, the SwCoE developed processes, templates and work instructions now in use by the organization. The effort spanned 18 months, which is significantly lower than the industry average of 26 months. The Level 3 rating places NNS among other industry leading defense contractors, such as Boeing, BAE, Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, and Northrop Grumman, that are known for their software development capabilities. Congratulations to E44’s SwCoE: Joseph Von Tersch, Stephen Jelf, Patrick Spisak, Marisol Liceaga, Tim Reynolds, Jeff McGowan, Paul Summa, Andrew Limbaugh, Bryan McDaniels, Jesse Kennedy, Maggie

VCS Safety Task Team Drives Superior Safety Results CONTINUED FROM PG 1
The Reactor Plant Module team, led by Construction Supervisor Tim Madden (X82), has won the award on five occasions, more than any other team. Madden says the key to safety and success is teamwork. “We are like a family,” he said. “We look out for each other.” Another way the program practices safety is through a Safety Status board. The board includes comments and conditions about projects to help employees work safely. VCS Safety Task Team Leader Dennis Miller (X18) said, “Our goal is to enlighten, engage and educate employees. Having people who want to be part of this initiative creates a different environment of safety.” Cover photo (L to R): Mike Scott (X18), Construction Supervisor Tim Madden (X82), Nicholas Baez (X11), VCS Safety Task Team Sponsor Robert Patsell (X82), CMAF Safety Task Team Lead Eric Duvall (X31), VCS Safety Task Team Leader Dennis Miller (X18), Brandon Holmes (X43), Construction Supervisor Lee Gilliam (X82) and Joshua Lyreman (X36).
