NNS' Weather Watchers Newport News Shipbuilding has a team that keeps an eye to the sky – and to the Atlantic Ocean – tracking storms and alerting leaders when systems have the potential to impact the shipyard. Bldg. 66 is home to NNS’ storm center, a hub where temperature, heat index, wind speed, tides, radars, various weather models and more are tracked. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 until Nov. 30 and usually peaks in September. That means during the summer and early fall, much of the team’s attention is focused on tropical systems. “I’ve been in this room for every hurricane that has come upon us since 2002,” said Ken Hewitt (O69), who manages the storm center. During hurricane season, Hewitt’s team monitors reports from the National Hurricane Center and works with Waterfront Support Services (X36) to share forecasts with NNS leadership. When a storm’s effects are imminent, the shipyard enters “storm condition” – a four-tier system that determines preparation steps at NNS – and the two departments work around the clock along with Facilities.

Career Pathways volunteers from Newport News Shipbuilding – and the company’s integrated Digital Shipbuilding Mobile Experience (MX) trailer – spent Thursday, July 19, at the Virginia Air and Space Museum in Hampton for the Peninsula Metropolitan YMCA’s fifth annual STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) Fair. More than 1,000 YMCA campers from Peninsula-area YMCA branches participated in the fair, which is part of an effort to prevent summer learning loss. Brenda Meekins (O26), who was one of 15 NNS volunteers, greeted the campers and answered their questions. “Our involvement in these type of events is beneficial for the company and for the kids because we are grooming future shipbuilders,” she said. “This was my way of giving back to the community.” Those interested in becoming a Career Pathways volunteer should contact Pierrette Swan (K18) at 688-2201.

7 | 30 | 2018 Between 1,500 and 2,000 shipbuilders attended the interactive experience, designed and led by production foremen involved with the WLET. During the event, foremen were stationed at booths focused on specific Gallup engagement survey questions with informational sheets and activities. The foremen provided clarity about the questions and solicited feedback from attendees. Shipbuilders who were previously recognized by the WLET for engagement and ISCVN engagement champions also were stationed at booths performing the “best day at work” exercise.

Shipbuilders Attend Engagement Expo The USS George Washington (CVN 73) Waterfront Leadership Engagement Team (WLET) sponsored an engagement expo on July 11 for employees on all shifts. “This event was a great opportunity to introduce the WLET members and the Operations Division In-Service Carrier Program Engagement Champions. They could see who we are, what we do and to show everyone how they can be a part of making the deckplate experience better for our shipbuilders. It’s exciting to see the amount of hard work and dedication this team puts into improving engagement in our workplace. We are all in,” said Lead General Foreman Mike Mathews (K45/X43), who is also the CVN 73 WLET sponsor and the Operations Division ISCVN engagement champion lead.

“Change doesn’t happen overnight. I have been employed at Newport News Shipbuilding for 11 years, and I can honestly say the WLET is trying to make a difference. We have an opportunity to work with them to help the process move faster, then watch as the change happens right before your eyes,“ said Duriel Smith (X31), who is also an Operations Division engagement champion. “This event turned out to be awesome. There was a surprising amount of interest amongst all the people who attended. They asked a lot of questions, which led to some great dialogue,” said X43 Foreman Travis Cook.

Shipbuilder's Hard Hat Prevents Serious Injury Dwayne Harmon (X36) was working on John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) at Newport News Shipbuilding in June when two 5-foot Safway planks suddenly fell from approximately 40 feet above him, striking his hard hat. Harmon walked away from the incident because he was wearing the personal protective equipment (PPE) that is required in production areas. “You never know what could happen at any given time,” he said. “My incident is proof. My hard hat saved my life.” A representative from MSA, the company that manufactures NNS’ hard hats, recently visited the shipyard to honor Harmon with the MSA Gold Helmet Award. The award is given to individuals who have been involved in an incident in which their hard hat either saved their life or prevented a serious injury. MSA does this to learn from real-life experiences and to share stories like Harmon's with their employees to remind them that what they do matters. X36 Trade Director Dave Vandegrift thanked Harmon for using PPE correctly and presented him with a gold helmet and plaque from MSA. “Something can happen in a split second. That’s why it’s so important – even on a hot day – to always wear your PPE properly,” Vandegrift said. “We’ve got to do everything in our power as leaders and as craftsmen and craftswomen to ensure our own safety

and the safety of those around us. We want everyone to go home to their families intact every day.” Harmon said he will continue to advocate for safety at NNS. “It’s important to be engaged and focused on your job,” he said. “Make sure you look out for your co-workers, and don’t take shortcuts.”

NNS' Weather Watchers CONTINUED FROM PG 1

Hewitt said the precautions shipbuilders take at their homes when a storm is possible – such as putting away lawn furniture – is similar to what happens at the shipyard. “Take that and magnify it to everything that we have here in the shipyard that can become a projectile. A lot has to happen,” he said. “That’s why it’s so important for us to track the weather. We err on the side of caution. If it looks like the potential is there, we have to react. If it doesn’t actually hit us, people may think we went through all of that for nothing, but we really didn’t. We just got lucky.” The biggest threat to NNS during hurricanes is tidal surge, according to X36 Trade Director Dave Vandegrift. Although the region hasn’t experienced a direct hit from a hurricane in more than a decade, he said it’s important not to become complacent. “We’ve been really fortunate in this area, but you should always prepare before a storm comes. Know what you’re going to do at home. Know what you’re going to do at work,” Vandegrift said. “Don’t wait until the storm gets here to read the procedure. You need to know ahead of time.” He encourages shipbuilders to check the X36 website for weather updates. Although hurricane season is a focus, all types of weather threats are monitored throughout the year. “We put out weather reports for any kind of inclement weather – including severe storms, wind events and snow,” said Kathleen Ross (O69). The team also provides information to NNS leaders who make decisions about when and where to offer liberal leave to shipbuilders due to weather conditions. Ross said storm center staff don’t just monitor the weather while they are at work, but she’s just fine with that. “This is my dream job,” she said. “I’ve always been fascinated with weather.” In the event of inclement weather, shipbuilders are reminded to check the Employee Information Phone Line (1-877-871-2058), the NNS to Go app, company email and company social media pages for updates about shipyard operations.

Christening Ceremony Set for Sept. 15; National Anthem Singer Needed Newport News Shipbuilding will christen Delaware (SSN 791) on Saturday, Sept. 15. The Communications Division is looking for a shipbuilder to sing or play the national anthem during the ceremony – preferably an employee working in the Virginia-Class Submarine Program or from the state of Delaware. Employees who can perform the national anthem on the cello, violin or harp are also encouraged to submit their information. If you are interested, contact Bryan Moore (O29) via email or at 688-4607 as soon as possible. All employees will be required to audition, and singers should be prepared to sing a cappella. Additional information about the christening event, tickets and volunteer opportunities will be communicated at a later date.

Discount Tickets Available for Busch Gardens and Water Country Newport News Shipbuilding is celebrating its employees by offering discounted tickets to Busch Gardens and Water Country Aug. 4-5. Shipbuilders, family and friends are eligible to purchase discounted one-day passes for these days; tickets for a single day at Busch Gardens are $47 and a single day at Water Country are $32. Tickets must be purchased online by Aug. 5. To purchase tickets, visit buschgardens.com/williamsburg/promo-code and enter BGWNNSB into the promo code box. Additionally, NNS has received a limited number of tickets to give away to shipbuilders. NNS will hold three drawings for employees to receive tickets for free entry into the park of their choice. Drawings will be held on July 30, July 31 and Aug. 1. Shipbuilders interested in winning these tickets can enter the contest once a day via the NNS to Go app through Aug. 1. Three winners will be selected at random and notified by 10 a.m. the following day for each of the three drawings. Winners must pick up their tickets from the Communications Office located in Bldg. 520-1 no later than noon on Friday, Aug. 3. Tickets will not be mailed. Tickets not claimed by noon on the following day will be forfeited. No exceptions will apply. For more information, contact Laurel Overby (O29) at 688-9932.

Updates from the NNS Parking Team Hidens Parking Lot Sections Labeled To enhance safety and for employee convenience, Facilities recently finished a project to label sections of the Hidens Parking Lot (A, B, C). The project is part of the company’s ongoing initiatives to improve quality of life for its employees.

Parking Spaces Designated for Expectant Mothers Ten spaces in various company parking lots are now designated for expectant mothers. Spaces are located closest to shipyard gates and/or shuttle stops in the following lots: Hidens, North Yard, Bldg. 1744, Bldg. 520, Bldg. 907, 50th Street gate and 42nd Street gate. Designated spaces are posted with signage and expectant mothers (with any color NNS decal) are authorized to park in these spaces. View a map of these locations on MyNNS.

Bldg. 1744 Parking Changes Reserved and visitor parking located in front of Bldg. 1744 will now be enforced 24/7. This is due to an overwhelming number of unauthorized vehicles parked in this lot without proper credentials. Individuals visiting this building are required to sign in at the lobby located on the first floor of the facility and should only park in designated visitor parking spaces. Vehicles parked in reserved and/or visitor spaces without proper credentials are subject to being towed at the owner's expense.

City Makes Changes to Huntington Avenue Detour The city of Newport News implemented a new traffic pattern along the Huntington Avenue detour today, July 30, to improve traffic flow in the area. Short term on-street parking on the west side of Washington Avenue between 39th and 34th streets was removed to allow for two lanes of southbound traffic on Washington Avenue. On-street parking that is removed as a result of this change will be deemed a “No Parking Tow Zone” for the duration of the project. The four handicapped parking spaces on the west side of Washington Avenue south of 39th Street were relocated to the east side of the street. Pedestrians and drivers should be aware of this new traffic pattern and should pay close attention to signage. The intersection of 39th Street and Huntington Avenue recently was reconfigured to allow the continuous flow of traffic on 39th Street. To learn more about detour changes, watch a video on MyNNS or see the Distribution A memo.

Shauntel Foster speaks during a panel discussion at Service Unites, a conference powered by Points of Light.

Career Pathways Creates Volunteer Workshop Newport News Shipbuilding’s Career Pathways created and took part in a panel discussion workshop session at Service Unites, a conference powered by Points of Light that brought together nonprofit, government, business and civic leaders. The conference was held in Atlanta in June. Shauntel Foster (K18) and Pierrette Swan (K18) submitted the idea for the session, which included panelists from Bank of America and Hilton. Approximately 100 participants from across the nation attended the workshop, which focused on the importance of providing volunteer opportunities for employees that involve students. Such opportunities engage the current workforce in service, while also positively impacting future recruitment. “We discussed how each company leverages its volunteer base to develop the next generation of employees. At Newport News Shipbuilding, Career Pathways has over 300 volunteers who contribute their time and expertise to students in our local communities,” said Foster, who represented NNS on the panel. “What better way is there for students to learn about careers at Newport News Shipbuilding than through our volunteer programs?”

NASA Langley Group Tours NNS Newport News Shipbuilding welcomed a group from NASA Langley in June for a tour of the shipyard to learn about Integrated Digital Shipbuilding, The Apprentice School and the Joint Manufacturing and Assembly Facility (JMAF). The group, Langley Emerging and Advancing Professionals (LEAP), works to enhance Langley’s culture through networking. LEAP has connected with SHIPs Network, one of Newport News Shipbuilding’s employee resource groups. “Establishing a connection between LEAP and SHIPs Network promotes a spirit of collaboration between Newport News Shipbuilding and NASA Langley Research Center and allows early career professionals, especially within the STEM fields, to build their networks,” said Caroline Montgomery, LEAP’s marketing lead and representative, who is the daughter of a shipbuilder. “This ultimately nurtures a culture within both organizations of diversity and progression. The overall feedback from LEAP members after the tour of the shipyard was positive and enthusiastic.”
