A weekly publication of Newport News Shipbuilding
Warner Commissioned The Virginia-class attack submarine USS John Warner (SSN 785) was commissioned during a ceremony attended by more than 2,500 in its future homeport of Naval Station Norfolk, Saturday, Aug. 1. “Let them know of your presence and your determination to defend freedom,” said Sen. John Warner, as he addressed the audience and the ship’s crew. “Defend the sea lanes of the world which are the very arteries of international commerce. Manned by our submarines, our surface ships, and naval aircraft, we are carefully working to keep those sea lanes open - not just for us but for all.” The keynote speaker for the commissioning ceremony was Adm. Jonathan Greenert, chief of Naval Operations. “This boat is the latest incarnation of American sea power, and is a strategic asset for this country,” said Greenert. “This affords us what we refer to as global access, and it is fundamental to any mission that you ask your military to do. Frankly, we are challenged in space, we are challenged in cyber, we are challenged in the air and we are challenged on the surface. We are not currently challenged in the undersea. We own the undersea domain. We must keep that situation as we go into the future.” Warner is the second of eight Block III Virginia-class submarines to be built. “You are at a formative stage as a crew,” said Vice Adm. Michael Connor, commander, Submarine Forces. “If you approach your important duties with the same commitment as your namesake there is no doubt that the USS John Warner will enjoy a lifetime of future accomplishments that parallels the future trajectory of Petty Officer Third Class John Warner.” Cmdr. Daniel B. Caldwell, commanding officer, then asked Mrs. Warner to bring the ship to life, joining USS John Warner to the Navy’s submarine force.

Apprentice Jaycees and the Doris Miller Community Center Partner to Host Job Skills Workshop The Apprentice Jaycees and the Doris Miller Community Center in Newport News hosted a three-part job skills workshop July 15-18. The first session was focused on interviewing tips, types of interviews and common interview questions. The second session addressed resume building, participants used the community center’s computer lab to create and refine their resumes. While on the computer, each participant was assigned a job position to research for a mock interview. Members of the Apprentice Jaycees conducted the mock interviews during the final session and gave feedback to each participant. “The job skills workshop was a great teambuilding and community event,” said Chelsee Mooring (O22). “The Apprentice Jaycees look forward to partnering with the Doris Miller Community Center to offer future workshops.” Pictured (L to R): Aleshia Jackson, Glenn Skinner, Phillip Riddick, Elisha Davis, LaShonda Pearson, Chelsee Mooring and Linda McMillian.

Understanding the Corrosion Process On July 13, more than 35 submarine and carrier employees attended a class to better understand the corrosion process. Being informed about the corrosion process is crucial for shipbuilders because when corrosion is not identified and resolved immediately it has the potential to lead to substantial rework. Joyce Wright, Surface Prep and Treatment (SP&T) Value Stream Leader (O07), led the class with support from Mike O’Donnell, director of Process Excellence, and Jim Coppa, director of SP&T. “My hope is that key people in the build process of John F. Kennedy [CVN 79] would be comfortable and confident at identifying the
grade of rust that requires the steps in Y-1020 to be invoked,” said Wright, who was recently elected to the Board of Governors for The Society for Protective Coatings. “I think the personnel in the class Joyce Wright (O07) appreciated the knowledge they received in this class and they now have a new awareness outside of their day-to-day routine to help in the fight against corrosion.” X91 Superintendent Lee Murphy added, “To have this Standard Grade D Rust Training in place is a level-setting item that can bring consistency across all of our areas of
responsibility. In my eyes, it went way beyond the information; it brought us all together as a team for the same cause.” Mike O’Donnell, director of Process Excellence said, “It’s vital that our O07 Value Stream Leaders continue to identify opportunities where they can lean in and support the Trade Value Streams. Joyce’s leadership abilities and knowledge of this industry was critical in the success of this class.” Mike Martin, manager of Structural Fabrication and Assembly Production Control said, “The heightened awareness will also help us catch issues earlier in the value stream, helping to reduce any necessary rework costs.”

Safety Task Teams Sponsor Safety Expo More than 35 Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Task Teams and representatives from Health and Safety and Environmental Engineering sponsored this year’s Saefty Task Team Exposition on July 31. The expo was held in Bldg. 520 and booths were tied to the theme, “don’t gamble with safety.” Safety Task Team Expo Lead Kati Allison (O27) said that this is the first year the expo has been centered around a specific theme. “Each team did a great job of incorporating the theme into their booth and demonstrating the innovative and cost-saving ways that they are making safety a priority in their workspace,” she said. “We were absolutely amazed with the thought and creativity some of these teams put into their booths to demonstrate that safety is serious and a top priority, but can be fun at the same time.”

Vest.” “The shipyard currently has 12 of these vests right now,” he said. “We’re currently piloting the vest around to different departments to see how they can best be used to fit our needs here at Newport News Shipbuilding.”
“Our booth this year was completely handcrafted,” said Burkett. “We wanted to ensure that every participant walked away with at least one piece of new safety knowledge that they didn’t know before.”
Brickner says that the vest is easy to put on. “You wear it like a backpack and it restricts your back from enduring the weight and ensures that you use your leg muscles do the work instead of your back.”
At the Maintenance Department’s (O43) booth, Safety Task Team Member Zack Brickner demonstrated the V22 Exoskeleton “StrongArm

Promoting Safety Awareness Logistics (O53) shipbuilders across the shipyard wear orange on the second Friday of each month to promote safety awareness. “Recently, the department came up with a new slogan, ‘Safety… Did it, Done it, Doing it Tomorrow!’ - reminding us all that safety needs to be our focus… everyday,” said Maggie Yarborough. “The orange safety shirts signify our department’s unified commitment to safety and a
subtle reminder of the importance to work safely. We all want to go home to our families in the same condition in which we arrived to work. My hope is that everyone wears their shirt with pride, safety becomes their number one priority and they make the commitment to own it!” O53 invites all employees to wear orange on the second Friday of every month to promote safety awareness. NNS and AMSEC Maintain American Heart Association’s Fit-Friendly Worksite Status On July 31, Huntington Ingalls Industries announced that its Newport News Shipbuilding division and its AMSEC LLC subsidiary were once again recognized by the American Heart Association for going above and beyond for employees’ health. Both Newport News and AMSEC were awarded the association’s Fit-Friendly Worksite status for the second and fourth consecutive year.
demonstrate a behavior change or a cost savings outcome due to its wellness culture. NNS was awarded the gold status in 2014. To improve employees’ health, NNS provides fitness classes and a walking path for employees in addition to healthy eating options. Newport News is also the future site of one of HII’s Family Health Centers which will serve employees and their dependents.
“We are proud to encourage and support wellness of employees and their families,” said Bill Bell, vice president of Human Resources and Administration. “We are constantly looking for ways to improve the wellness culture for Newport News Shipbuilding employees as well as those at AMSEC and elsewhere. The American Heart Association has again recognized our efforts at providing holistic wellness programs that encourage healthy eating and physical activity.”
AMSEC maintained the association’s gold status for the fourth consecutive year. To receive gold Fit-Friendly status, companies must show that they are taking steps to improve the health of their employees through nutritional changes and physical activity support. AMSEC encourages employees to increase physical activity throughout their workday by sponsoring events like the six-week Step-by-Step walking challenge. Employees can also participate in the company’s Weight Watchers program to learn about healthy eating.
NNS received the Platinum Fit-Friendly status this year. This status is given to worksites that implement physical and nutrition activities and

Bagley Testifies on Capitol Hill Ray Bagley, vice president of Trades Operations, testified on Capitol Hill July 29 at a hearing of the Subcommittee on Readiness and Management Support. The purpose of the hearing was to look at the impact of these practices, such as training, efficiency initiatives, management and labor cooperation and apprentice programs to better performance in the shipbuilding and repair industry and in sustaining naval readiness. Bagley spent more than two hours testifying and answering questions from the committee. “I’m especially proud given that I graduated from The Apprentice School 36 years ago,” said Bagley. “It provided me an education and opened doors to experiences and opportunities. Today, it serves as an excellent example of how intense career and technical education can prepare students for highlyskilled, in-demand careers through a combination of rigorous academics and real world experiences with a potential to change the course of their lives, as it has done for me.” Ray Bagley, vice president of Trades Operations, testifies on Capitol Hill July 29. Reminder About Fundraising and Solicitations
AUGUST 12
As the fall approaches, many departments are making plans to support the local community. The Office of Corporate Citzenship would like to remind all employees that fundraising and solicitations at Newport News Shipbuilding are governed by Coporate Policy CP H3. Below are some tips for staying within the guidelines: • All fundraisers or solicitations must be approved in advance by Tom Cosgrove, manager of Corporate Citizenship. After approval from corporate citizenship has been obtained, the fundraiser/solicitation must also be approved by the division vice president over the sponsoring department or the executive sponsor of the sponsoring employee resource group (ERG). • Each fundraising or solicitation request is reviewed on a case-by-case basis. • All fundraising or solicitations must be sponsored by a department or ERG. Individual shipbuilders cannot sponsor fundraisers or solicitations. • Fundraising solicitations cannot be done on company time. It must be conducted before or after work, during lunch or designated breaks, or through flex time with supervisors’ approval. • Charitable fundraising and solicitations can only be done for the types of organizations that NNS as a company would support. Fundraising/solicitations to benefit athletic teams, religious or political organizations, or individual shipbuilders will not be approved. The benefitting organization must be a 501(c)(3) organization. • Sales of items outside the shipyard gates are tightly controlled and must be coordinated with Judy Fundak (K18) through the Department of Corporate Citizenship. • Fundraisers and solicitations should be limited in duration, allow for safeguarding of funds raised, and can never make employees feel pressured to contribute. • Approvals of solicitations and fundraisers will require a specific plan. Fundraisers/solicitations will only be approved for specific dates and programs. Departments/ERGs will not be given blanket approval for ongoing fundraising/solicitation effort. Questions about these policies and guidelines can be directed to Tom Cosgrove at 380-3090.

Warner Commissioned CONTINUED FROM PG 1
“The commissioning of the USS John Warner marks the beginning of what is expected to be 40 years of distinguished service for this great submarine - a fitting tribute to a man who served his nation for so long as a Sailor, a Marine, a United States Senator and, as one of my most esteemed predecessors as Secretary of the Navy,” said Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus in a Navy press release. “This ceremony is not only a celebration of a man who dedicated so much of his life to his country and to the Department of the Navy, but also a reminder of the partnership our Navy shares with the shipbuilding industry in Senator Warner’s home state of Virginia and the continued success of the Virginia-class attack submarine program.” Visit www.navy.mil for more information.
