Material Support Shipbuilders Celebrate 1,000-Parts Milestone Material Support shipbuilders working in the 231 warehouse recently celebrated their first milestone utilizing the facility’s new state-ofthe-art automated retrieval system. The team successfully categorized the first 1,000-parts. To recognize the milestone, warehouse leadership held a “1,000-parts celebration” during a potluck lunch Aug. 6. “The new system was installed at the beginning of this year and we began using it in April,” said Jo Stith, one of the two system operators. “It consists of seven towers, each tower holds 62 drawers and each drawer holds 50 bins.” To utilize as much space as possible in each bin, Shirley Dunlevy and Andy Daniels crafted

individual trays for each part and Eunice Ellis and Deborah Thomas worked on tag and label design. “We want to make sure there is enough room, but we also don’t want to waste space,” said Dunlevy. “We have metal dividers that allow us to create the exact tray size we need and the computer system keeps track of where the tray is located and can bring it to the operator in a moment’s notice.” Stith says the new system is also very ergonomically friendly. “Instead of the enclosed system we had before, this system is open and trays are brought to us and to the height in which is the most comfortable for the operator.”

NNS to Celebrate Ethics Awareness Week Newport News Shipbuilding will celebrate Ethics Awareness Week Aug. 17-21. This year’s theme is “Performance with Integrity.” The purpose of the week is to focus employees on company shared values, communicate ethical standards and to keep the ethics message fresh in the mind of every employee. Business Conduct representatives will cascade ethical moment messages and a FAQ slide deck to employees. New OpenLine posters and ethics banners will also be posted at various gates/buildings and an ethics video entitled, “Performance With Integrity” will be featured on Homeport. Supervisors are encouraged to use this opportunity to discuss the importance of ethics during their staff meetings. Visit the Ethics and Business Conduct website on Yardnet or contact Catrina Hagwood (O18) in the Business Conduct Office at 688-1907.

VCS Shipbuilders Recognized for Safety Efforts Twelve X42 shipbuilders working in the Virginia-class Submarine Program (VCS) were recently recognized for their continuous safety efforts in their work area. The crew is responsible for Section 9 and Section 8 support. “The crew believes that it is their responsibility to look out for each other on the job,” said the crew’s Foreman Ken Keeter Jr. “They work in close quarters, so they are constantly checking on each other and looking out for potential hazards around them.” The third-shift crew has been accident-free for two years and six months. “The main thing the team does to help prevent injuries is that they work together to make it a safer working environment,” said Keeter. “They try to keep the walkways clear of lines on the deck to prevent slips trips and falls. They also do a cleanup at the start and end of the shift. This allows them to have a clean work

area for the night and to ensure the next shift will have a clean space to work in as well.” Keeter says he is proud of the crew. “They have worked hard on this achievement and should be very proud.”

E07, X89 and X76 Shipbuilders Continue Engagement Action Planning This year the New Construction Carrier Program Engineering Planning, Program Planning and Production Control organization (E07, X89, X76) has instituted a new approach for employee engagement. In addition to supporting traditional Gallup practices, the division came up with a “What Can We All Do” theme to increase employee engagement. “The effort consists of each team member establishing a ‘What Can I Do’ action plan with solutions for improving self-engagement, while also establishing a ‘What Can Others Do’ action plan to improve overall engagement within the division,” said Joanne Belote, director of production planning and scheduling. “For the ‘What Can Others Do,’ we solicited volunteers willing to serve as peer leads. We received 23 leads throughout the division. This overall effort is being conducted through a tiered approach with a diverse selection of peer lead participants assigned on all levels from employees, supervisors, managers and directors. It is also consists of involvement from the administrative staff to achieve full participation. ”

Second row (L to R): Amy Rogers (X89), Kari Shifflett (X89), Ashley Cadwallader (X89), Donna Jones (X89), Gail Evans (X89), Mike Martin (X89), Donna Taylor (E07) and Cedric Marston (X76). Third row (L to R): Shavonne Clark (X89), Abby Pruett (E07), Donnie Smith (X89), Todd Davis (X89), Mike Chenault (X89), Mike Frazier (E07), Jason Moore (X89), Steve Waters (X89) and Dean Clark (X76).

Damon Saetre, manager of production planning and scheduling, says that the peer leads are responsible for conducting meetings focused on the 12-question survey and to collect feedback utilizing an internal tool developed specially for this initiative. “These meetings were coordinated with co-workers without other management members involved and discussions are kept internal to each group as anonymous,” said Carol Sisti, manager of production planning and scheduling. “The outcome of this collaborative effort has resulted in an inclusion of diverse ideas from the assorted planning areas of responsibility. This process provided a method for peer leads to follow-up on assigned actions by holding teams accountable through action plan development” as emphasized by Tanesha Lockett, manager of production planning and scheduling.

CVN 72 Shipbuilder Recognized for Ethical Actions Nickalus Linza (X75) was recently recognized by Chris Miner, vice president of In-Service Aircraft Carriers, for helping to save a family in his neighborhood when a fire broke out in their house one afternoon. “I was at home watching TV when I heard a loud crack,” said Linza, production planner and scheduler working on USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72). “I immediately walked over to the door to look outside and that’s when I saw the black smoke and knew something wasn’t right.” Linza and another neighbor, who also heard the loud sound, went over to the house and alerted the occupants that the back of their house was on fire. “We called 911 and ensured that everyone in the house was out. The Suffolk Fire Department was onsite very quickly and were able to save the structure from becoming a total loss,” said Linza. Miner presented Linza a special coin on Aug. 5. “I want to thank you for your heroic actions,” said Miner. “These types of things don’t happen very often, but when they do, it’s comforting to know that there are people out there like you who rise to the occasion and do whatever they can to help. Your actions that day saved the lives of several people and it is a true testament to your character.” In addition to helping the family escape the burning house, Linza also baked a Peanut Butter Sugar Cookie Cake for the affected neighbors and the fire fighters who responded to the incident.

Eden Jones, supervisor of Material Handling, says she is very proud of the team. “I’m extremely proud of Michael Hicks and Jo Stith for the pride and ownership they have taken with these towers,” said Jones. “This retrieval system is the first of its kind at NNS and a great investment in our material infrastructure. With General Foreman George Boone leading us and Supervisor Tony Poplin and his transition team touching every piece of material in the warehouse, we are able to work to our four pillars with safer equipment, quality of material storage, cost-savings lowering the chances of lost or damaged material, schedule with productivity increasing, and cycle time decreasing. All equaling to the highest customer satisfaction.” Cover: Jo Stith uses the shipyard’s new state-of-the-art retrieval system to locate small parts.
