10,000th Pipe Detail for John F. Kennedy Complete Pipe Shop shipbuilders have completed the 10,000th pipe detail for aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy (CVN 79). To celebrate, Pipe Shop leadership held luncheons at each of the Pipe Shops Aug. 18-20. “Not only have you completed 10,000 of the 81,400 total pipe details for Kennedy, you have completed them with wins across all four pillars – safety, quality, cost, and schedule,” said Andy Green, vice president of Component Fabrication and Assembly. “It’s extremely important that the Pipe Shop continues performing at this exceptional rate to show the Navy that we can build CVN 79 at an affordable cost.”
Pipe Shop Superintendent Kenton Meland also congratulated the shipbuilders on a job well done. “In June 2009 we were celebrating this milestone for aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78),” he said. “Since then, this team has gotten stronger and you are now working together better than ever. Your cost performance index (CPI) for the first 10,000 pipe details is 1.18 – which is outstanding! Keep up the great work.” CONTINUED ON PAGE 2 Pictured: Pipe Shop leadership display a poster showcasing statistics of the first 10,000 details completed for aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy (CVN 79). HRT’s Guaranteed Ride Program Hampton Roads Transit is temporarily opening the “Guaranteed Ride Program” to passengers using peninsula commuter routes 403, 405, 412, 414, 415, 427 and 430. Until December 31, 2014, registered participants who become stranded by the bus due to a detour or breakdown, can call the program number (800-700-7433) for a ride (via taxi) back to the parking area where they caught HRT bus.
NNS Engineers Conduct Compartment Surveys on USS Theodore Roosevelt at Sea In July, Naval Architecture and Weight Engineering (E42) and Systems Engineering (E47) shipbuilders conducted weight load surveys of more than 3,400 compartments on USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) while at sea. The surveyors entered 99.5 percent of the ship’s compartments and dry voids, and sounded all of the tanks collecting weight load data for the ship’s post-refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) stability test. The survey data combined with the results of the test will provide a new weight and stability baseline for the ship’s remaining service life and will be used to determine the ship’s stability across a range of operating conditions. 10,000th Pipe Detail cont. Pipe Fitter Amos Rawls (X42) is proud to be part of the team. “It feels good to know that our hard work is appreciated. The Pipe Shop does a good job of letting us know what goals we need to work towards and acknowledges us for reaching those goals,” he said. Casey Bill (X18) welded pipes for Ford and is now welding pipes for Kennedy. “The Pipe Shop team has a ‘can do’ attitude,” he said. “We are continuously focused on improving and I’m confident that we can continue to beat our numbers on future projects.” After remarks from leadership, shipbuilders’ names were randomly drawn from a hat to show off their “Pipe Shop bowling” skills. Employees whose names were selected had the opportunity to roll a ball made from discarded duct tape into a trashcan. Those who were able to bowl the ball into the trashcan were given shipyard merchandise. NNS Supports a “Summer of STEM” Newport News Shipbuilding supported several camps this summer to generate excitement toward STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers. Camps included: Peninsula Workforce Development Center’s K-Next Manufacturing Camp, Imagineering Manufacturing Camp and Newport News Public School’s Crittenden Middle School’s 21st Century Summer of Innovation Camp. Katelyn Johnson (E22) was a Career Pathways volunteer at the Imagineering Camp, which used a “Shark Tank” theme and allowed students to design and print their product on a 3-D printer. “The students had to prepare a business and marketing plan and then sell their ideas to investors,” said Johnson. “The winning team designed a device that would fit on a wheelchair to hold an umbrella.” Will Larkin (A527) said of the K-Next Camp, “While the students learned – I think they may have taught me more.” NNS AutoCAD Instructors Chris Brown (O35)
Students and instructors stand in front of the renewable resource structure that the students designed and built this summer during the 21st Century Summer of Innovation Camp.
and Tim Vaughan (O35) both volunteered at the 21st Century Summer of Innovation Camp. During the camp, students participated in various activities designed to enrich learning in preparation for Standards of Learning (SOL) testing. One of the activities was to build a renewable resource structure that students, will add to in the future. Brown and Vaughan assisted the students with designing and building the structure. For additional information about Career Pathways or how you can get involved, visit the Career Pathways website on Yardnet or contact Gordon Sproat (O44) at 688-3176
NNS Generational Event Hits the Mark More than 250 shipbuilders attended the “Bridging the Generations Gap: The Greatest to the Latest” event in Bldg. 520-6 on August 4. The event was conceived by Mary Stuczynski (E04) for the Emerging Leader Program (ELP). Teaming with Learning and Development, Stuczynski designed the event to encourage discussion and to learn about the social and cultural characteristics of each of the five generations of shipbuilders working at Newport News Shipbuilding. Ron Murray, vice president of Quality and Process Excellence, was the keynote speaker. He opened the event with a presentation on the importance of understanding each generation. He encouraged participants to examine their behaviors and to consider altering their behaviors accordingly when communicating and interacting with other generations. Shipbuilders representing each generation presented skits to highlight each generation’s preferences and differences.
Employee Engagement Survey Coming Soon Shipbuilders representing each of the five generations at NNS perform a skit portraying differences among generations. Pictured (L to R): Ray Bagley, CVN 72 Construction director, Julia Jones, director of Strategic Planning, Dejah Singh (O41), Shameia Rogers (E86), Jim Thornton, director of Environmental Health and Safety. John Shifflett, director of Learning and Organizational Development and executive event sponsor, said, “To see the effect that this program had on our attendees tells us that we need more of this type of event at Newport News Shipbuilding.” Ryan Blackburn (X33) said, “Stepping outside the gates to learn something that helps me communicate with people of all ages and generations, in and outside of work, lets me fill in the gaps to not only understanding people better, but also myself.”
This year’s Employee Engagement Survey will begin September 17. Newport News Shipbuilding encourages all employees to participate in the 12-question survey. The survey takes five to 10 minutes to complete, should be completed on company time and is 100 percent confidential. Employees with NNS email addresses will receive a link to an online survey from Gallup®. Employees without email addresses will be given printed copies. NNS encourages shipbuilders to complete the survey immediately after receiving it and to follow the instructions provided to submit the completed surveys. After the survey closes, results will be communicated to all employees through supervisors, company newsletters and other internal communications. Employee engagement is an opportunity for employees to honestly assess the work environment and is critical to NNS’ business success.
