NNS Conducts Steam Testing on USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) Last week, Newport News Shipbuilding announced that it has reintroduced steam to the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) to begin final testing of the ship’s steam-powered systems. Moored at Outfitting Berth 1, Lincoln is in the final stages of its mid-life refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH). Shipbuilders and sailors are beginning to test steam-powered systems on board, including the main engine complex and the electrical generators. “As steam is reintroduced into Lincoln’s piping systems and equipment is operated, the ship is truly coming back to life,” said Chris Miner, vice president of In-Service Aircraft Carrier Programs. “Once the work and final testing, including sea trials, is complete, Lincoln will be redelivered to the Navy as one of the most technologically advanced Nimitz-class carriers in the fleet.”

Lincoln’s RCOH began in March 2013. The entire process takes about 44 months. Newport News shipbuilders will complete more than 23 million man-hours of maintenance and modernization work preparing Lincoln for its return to the U.S. Navy fleet. The ship is on track to redeliver in 2016. “We achieved another major milestone recently by establishing shoresteaming capabilities, thanks to my counterparts at Newport News Shipbuilding, but also to the men and women serving aboard USS Abraham Lincoln and many others who all played an important role in accomplishing this feat,” said Capt. Ronald Ravelo, the ship’s commanding officer. Visit nns.huntingtoningalls.com/videos to watch a video of CVN 72 “Coming Back to Life.” Pictured: CVN 72 floats free from dry dock at NNS Nov. 3, 2014. Rep. Ander Crenshaw Visits Newport News Shipbuilding On Aug. 25, Huntington Ingalls Industries hosted Rep. Ander Crenshaw, R-Fla., for a tour of Newport News Shipbuilding. Ken Mahler, vice president of Navy Programs, joined Crenshaw for the visit, which included a tour of the aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) and discussions about increased efficiencies and construction progress on Ford and John F. Kennedy (CVN 79). Crenshaw also visited a submarine construction facility and received progress updates on the Virginia-class submarine program and the refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) of the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72). “Shipbuilding is the backbone of our maritime defense, and the opportunity to meet shipbuilders and see the ships they are building really gives me an appreciation for the complexity of their work,” Crenshaw said. “I applaud the many ways Newport News Shipbuilding is working with the Navy to reduce aircraft carrier and submarine construction and maintenance costs and look forward to working with my colleagues on the House Appropriations Committee to maintain an 11-carrier Navy.”

Rep. Ander Crenshaw (second from left) toured NNS and was briefed on the construction of Virginia-class submarines while visiting the shipyard’s Supplemental Module Outfitting Facility. Also pictured (left to right) are Matt Needy, VCS program director; Scott Whitmore, VCS construction superintendent; and Rob Austin, VCS construction director. Photo by Chris Oxley

Crenshaw was first elected to Congress in 2000. He is a member of the House Appropriations Committee and chairs the Financial Services and General Government Subcommittee. He also sits on the House Appropriations’ Defense Subcommittee and State and Foreign Operations Subcommittee. “We are always happy to host our country’s decision-makers at Newport News Shipbuilding,” Mahler said. “Congressman Crenshaw is a respected voice on defense issues and one of the Navy’s strongest advocates. We appreciate all that he does to support our work and the mission of our U.S. Navy customer.”

VCS Teams Work Together to Reduce Torpedo Tube Process Dimensional Control (O68), Design Lofting (E51) and Structural Fabrication and Assembly (SFA) shipbuilders have successfully implemented laser scanning into the torpedo tube template process. Through collaboration efforts, the team was able to reduce the process from three weeks to five days. “Historically, design data was used to create the templates, and the hole cuts would later be ground down to match the as built shape of the tube during installation,” said O68 Supervisor Justin Novak. “Using a combination of laser scanning technology and traditional laser tracker measurements, O68 technicians created an as-built digital point cloud [a collection of data points that represent an object three-dimensionally] of both the tubes and the hull surface. E51 then used these point clouds to create a more realistic template for the hole cut.” X11 Foreman David Washburn says that the new process has been very helpful for his crew on the deckplate. “Now, when we receive the torpedo tubes, the hole cut is a lot more precise and the improved template allows for the installation of the torpedo tube sleeves to be welded into the unit in record time,” he said. Construction Supervisor Mike Lowers estimates that the new

process saves more than 350 man-hours and reduces the schedule by approximately two weeks. “It took a lot of collaboration and work to get things right, but it was worth it and it will be worth it for future hulls going forward,” said Mark Lewis (E51). “This project is a perfect example of teamwork and I’m proud of every team member. Everyone coming together and sharing ideas and their expertise is why this project was so successful.”

NNI Celebrates 50th Anniversary Newport News Industrial celebrated its 50th anniversary during a lunchtime event for employees on Aug. 25. During the event, Pete Diakun, vice president of Energy Programs, Newport News Shipbuilding, and Steve Napiecek, NNS director of Programs, congratulated employees on 50 successful years of business. Joshua Skudlarick, director of Nuclear Power for Chicago Bridge and Iron Company (CBI), was also in attendance to congratulate NNI employees on the 200th product delivery of the CBI contract. In his remarks, Napiecek said, “We’re doing things that no one else has ever done before, we’re building stuff that no one has ever built before. Each of you have played an integral part in turning NNI into what it is today. You are some of the finest business people and skilled craftsmen that I’ve ever seen – you go out into the marketplace, compete with some of the best companies, win contracts and you execute those contracts based on what you all do here each and every day.” Welder Tim Boddie (910) has been working at NNI for two years. “Even though I haven’t worked at NNI for a long time, I’ve enjoyed my time here,” he said. “It was very nice of

VersAbility Representatives Tour Shipyard On Aug. 25, Newport News Shipbuilding hosted VersAbility representatives for a tour of the Detail Pipe Shop. Members of NNS’ “Build Clean” team led the tour, which also included a windshield tour of the shipyard. VersAbility is a not-for-profit organization in Hampton, of which 54 percent of its workforce are people with disabilities. The organization has been employing individuals with disabilities in Hampton Roads for more than 60 years. In 2014, NNS contracted with the agency to produce pipe discs, used to seal pipes and keep the pipes clean throughout the entire build process for submarines and aircraft carriers.

VersAbility representatives presented Build Clean team representatives with a special pipe disc imprinted with the NNS spear and gear logo. “To see our parts being used in a manufacturing environment at Newport News Shipbuilding gives us a great sense of pride,” said Whitney Lester, director of Business Development, VersAbility. “It’s rewarding to know we are part of such a great enterprise!”

Randy Willoughby is a full time employee at VersAbility, who is also the sole producer of 40,000 pipe discs per year for NNS. “Seeing my product all over the shipyard is amazing,” said Willoughby. “It was nice to physically see my product being used. Coming here and seeing the quality of the work and the friendliness of the people – it matches what we do. Our philosophy is ‘if it’s not perfect it doesn’t leave us’ and I feel the same way about what you do here.”

X33 Crew Adopts the Slogan, “Teamwork Makes the Dream Work” Recently, a crew of X33 craftsmen working in the Covered Module Assembly Facility (CMAF) had T-shirts made with the slogan, “Teamwork Makes the Dream Work.” The crew wore the T-shirts for the first time Aug. 20 and plans to continue wearing the shirts often to raise awareness about the importance of teamwork. “We thought that the T-shirts would be a good way to engage our crew and to showcase the importance of teamwork and quality to others,” said Amani Gillis, who suggested the slogan. “Our crew understands that in order to produce the highest quality product safely, under budget and on-time or ahead of schedule – our goals must be aligned and teamwork must be at the forefront.” Barbara Richardson (X33) said that an important aspect of teamwork is watching out for one another. “Part of what has made our team so strong is that we look out for one another,” she said. “Because of the nature of our work, our environment changes often, so we must be very

aware. Knowing that my team is also watching my back at all times is very comforting.” The second-shift crew has been accident free for nearly three years. Foreman Joseph Traynham said that the crew talks about teamwork and safety on a daily basis. “The team even came up with their own acronym for the word, ‘teamwork,’” Traynham said. “And safety is something we talk about before, during and after every shift. By talking about safety and teamwork, our goal is to keep it at the forefront of everyone’s mind. I’m proud of this crew and I’m excited to see what the future holds for them – because with teamwork anything is possible.” Pictured (L to R): Foreman Joseph Traynham, Sherilyn Correa-Vicente, Brianna Johnson, Brenda Smith, Shaunell Latimore, Kira Parker, Melvin Smith, Morial Hardisty, Linbert Ford, Barbara Richardson, Tracy Holloway, Crystal Mack, Reno Moore, Ashley Bryant, Rufus Rhodes, Amani Gillis. The Nimitz-class aircraft carriers USS George Washington (CVN 73) and USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) are pierside at Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego while conducting a hull-swap. The force structure change allows George Washington to undergo its mid-life refueling complex overhaul and Ronald Reagan to support the security and stability of the Indo-Asia-Pacific region. Reagan is scheduled to depart from the island Aug. 31. Washington is scheduled to arrive at Newport News Shipbuilding in 2017 for its refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH). U.S. Navy Photo
