Stoller Receives Department of Energy’s Superior Star Award
A weekly publication of Newport News Shipbuilding
The S.M. Stoller Corp., has been awarded the Superior Star Award by the Department of Energy. The award was presented Aug. 24 during an annual conference held in National Harbor, Md. The award recognizes companies that have attained the DOE’s Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) star status and have demonstrated a consistently superior level of performance in meeting established safety and health goals, conducted outreach, and achieved an injury and illness rate significantly below the average for similar operations. “Safety is extremely important in all aspects of our business,” said Pete Diakun, vice president of Energy Programs. “Our employees, whether they are working in Newport News, Mississippi or Colorado, are our greatest assets, and we are proud to celebrate this very important safety performance achievement.”
Shipbuilders Prepare for John Warner Christening Over the past few months, shipbuilders across the yard have been busy preparing for the John Warner (SSN 785) Christening. Last week, Warner shipbuilders made final touches to their work. Sheet Metal Craftsman Chris Hildebrand and Welder Herbert Holeman worked together to build the bottle break foundation. “This foundation is different from others because we put a navy blue background behind the ‘spear and gear’ logo to make the logo stand out,” said Hildebrand, who was the mastermind
behind the idea. “It means a lot to me to have been part of this project that will be seen by so many on Saturday and in photos many years from now.” Pattern Maker Bob Meyers has been building champagne boxes for christening ceremonies for the past 40 years. “I take pride in what I do. The thing I love the most about pattern making is that you can make the same thing... The Stoller Legacy Management Support Team, which on behalf of the DOE has control and custody for legacy land, structures and facilities that were previously involved in some aspect of the country’s nuclear weapons program, safely and cost-effectively manages more than 90 sites across the country to ensure post-closure responsibilities are met, and to protect human health and the environment. The VPP Superior Star Award was presented to the team for maintaining its employee injury rates at 50 percent of the industry average. Visit newsroom.huntingtoningalls.com for additional information.

HII Employees Receive Patriot Award for National Guard and Reserve Support Two members of Huntington Ingalls Industries’ legal team received Patriot Awards from Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) for their support of employees who are active in the National Guard or National Reserve. Jim Gildea, vice president and chief counsel of Newport News Shipbuilding, and Charles Neff, HII’s director of compliance, were nominated by Leila Garcia, a NNS paralegal who serves in the Virginia Air National Guard. Gildea and Neff were nominated for supporting a flexible schedule for Garcia’s duty and military leave. Their flexibility has created a positive environment for Garcia to serve both the company and the Virginia Air National Guard. “It speaks to Leila’s character and commitment that she has taken the time to nominate her leadership team for their support,” said Bill Bell, vice president of Human Resources and Administration. “Between serving in the Virginia Air National Guard, working full time in our law department and her other personal commitments outside of work, Leila’s days are full. We appreciate the time and effort she has spent on this significant recognition opportunity, and we are extremely proud and fortunate to have her as part of our team. Jim and Charles working with her schedule is a reminder of the company’s commitment to those serving our country.” Charles Neff (center) and James Gildea (third from right) accept Patriot Awards from the Virginia chapter of the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR). Sen. Tim Kaine Tours The Apprentice School On August 27, Senator Tim Kaine (D-Va.) met with shipyard and Apprentice School leaders to discuss the importance of Career Technical Education (CTE) programs as an alternative to traditional four-year colleges. During the visit, Kaine was also given a tour of the new Apprentice School. Newport News Shipbuilding President Matt Mulherin and Vice President of Operations Danny Hunley accompanied the senator during the tour, which showcased the facility’s eight computer labs, two videoconferencing classrooms, physics lab and gymnasium. During the tour, Kaine interacted with teachers and students in drafting and physics classes. He said he was impressed by the rigorous application process students go through to become apprentices in the program. “For 250 or so spaces a year, The Apprentice School will get 6,000 student applications from 24 states,” he said. “Many have previous college experience. Many have previous military experience.” The visit to The Apprentice School aligns with Kaine’s upcoming CTE Caucus, scheduled for Sept. 16, to inform senators and Senate staff about the value of technical education programs in the country.
The Apprentice School football team will open its 2014 season on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 1 p.m. against the United States Merchant Marine Academy at Apprentice Field (Bldg. 601).
“Career and technical education is critically important,” he said, “and there’s no better example of a CTE program in the country than the shipyard’s apprenticeship program, which has been in existence for almost 100 years.”
Tickets are $5. Visit www.gobuilders.com for more information on the team, schedule and other Apprentice School athletics.

Attention to detail was extremely important so the flag would look perfect when it was sewn together. I’m proud

Congratulations to the following graduates: Bradley Anderson (067), Rick Chapman (E49), Kari Conklin (E86), Ronald Cooke (026), Nathan Eramian (E86), Sarah Gentry (X72), Eric Hodges (009), Charlie Holloway Jr. (E88), Shelly Jefferson (E01), Traci Jones (009), Keith Joyner (E86), Christopher Kennedy (E86), Sheryll McNeil (051), Brenda Meekins (026), Ashley Ober (E83), Darlene Peele (009), Robert Schock (025), Denise Thomason (E02), and Aftinn Williams (020).
VCS Program Hands Out Freezer Pops to Shipbuilders Last week, members of the Virginia-class Submarine (VCS) Safety Task Team and members of management handed out freezer pops to shipbuilders during each shift as part of the “VCS Heat Stress Management Campaign.” “We thought freezer pops would be a good treat and a great way for shipbuilders to cool down on a hot summer day,” said VCS Safety Task Team Management Support Robert Patsell. “We hope that shipbuilders enjoyed the treat and know that their Safety Task Team and management team cares about them and supports them.” Stanley Britt (X18) said, “I think it’s awesome that the program thought about us – especially for welders like me who work in hot conditions all day long. There’s no better way to cool down than with a freezer pop!” Louis Williams (X31), left, hands Krystal Stevenson (E13/E03) a freezer pop at the Modular Outfitting Facility on August 27.
