Washington is Pressure Hull Complete On Sept. 1, Neport News Shipbuilding announced that the Virginia-class submarine Washington (SSN 787) is “pressure hull complete,” signifying that all of the submarine’s hull sections have been joined to form a single, watertight unit. Washington will be the U.S. Navy’s 14th Virginia-class submarine and the seventh to be delivered by NNS. “Pressure hull complete is an exciting step toward the boat’s completion because it’s the point when the submarine really starts to take its final shape and is the last major construction milestone before christening and delivery next year,” said Jim Hughes, vice president of Submarines and Fleet support. “As with all of our Virginia-class submarines, Washington represents a true team effort that involves our partners at General Dynamics Electric Boat, the Navy, our suppliers and the Washington crew.” Washington’s construction, which began in September 2011 under a teaming arrangement between Newport News and Electric Boat, marked the beginning of the VCS program’s two-submarines-per-year build plan. The ship is currently 83 percent complete. “Over the last year and a half, I have enjoyed watching the many parts that make up a submarine come together,” said Cmdr. Jason Schneider, Washington’s commanding officer. “I can truly say Washington now looks like a submarine on the outside. I look forward to seeing the systems that make up the internals of the submarine continue to come together as we approach launch and delivery.” The Virginia-class submarine Washington (SSN 787) is “pressure hull complete,” a construction milestone signifying that all of the submarine’s hull sections have been joined to form a single, watertight unit. Supply Chain Streamlines Process to Get Material to the Deckplate Faster “Job Prep” began as a Supply Chain Management (SCM) initiative in 2011, involving many departments. Its goal is to improve the delivery time of materials to the deckplate so that craftsmen have the resources they need to be as efficient as possible in their daily work flow. The first “Job Prep” pilot was conducted in 2012 on Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78). During the pilot, the team conducted a root cause analysis to understand the bottlenecks and issues with the current material delivery process. The team found out that foremen were ordering material for an entire work package at one time versus ordering only the necessary material to perform a specific job. They were doing this to avoid having their craftsmen have to delay the workflow process until the needed material arrived. Throughout 2013, the team made necessary adjustments to the process and were able to achieve a successful product delivery rhythm. As a result, foremen included in the “Job Prep” process are now able to spend more time on

the deckplate with their craftsmen. SCM also developed a separate team to manage the ordering, storing and delivery of material to the trades in a pull versus push system. “In many cases, cycle time has been reduced from a foreman trying to plan material nearly one to one and a half months in advance, to being able to plan for material to be delivered to the deckplate in less than 10 days,” said Jason Ipock, general foreman working on USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH). X88 General Foreman Kenny McBurney is also pleased with the new process. “My mechanics are now spending more time doing their job versus having to walk long distances to retrieve material or delay a job to wait for material,” he said. “With this new process, my deckplate guys are happy knowing that they are only a phone call away from getting the materials they need in a timely manner.”

NNS Wins Submarine Support Deal Newport News Shipbuilding has been awarded a $109.4M modification to a previously awarded contract. The deal includes engineering, technical, design, configuration management, integrated logistics support, database management, research and development, modernization, and industrial support for nuclear submarines. The contract provides support for Los Angeles, Seawolf, Virginia, and Ohio-class submarines, special mission submersible interfaces, submarine support facilities, as well as potential foreign military sales programs. Work will be performed in Newport News and is expected to be completed by September 2017.

Shipbuilders Attend NNS Heart Walk Team Lead Meeting Nearly 30 employees who will participate in this year’s Hampton Roads Heart Walk attended an informational session on Sept. 1. Dr. Allan Murphy, a cardiologist from Riverside Hospital, was the guest speaker for the after work event. Newport News Shipbuilding’s executive sponsors for the event, Jennifer Dunn, director of Communications, and Bharat Amin, vice president and CIO, also spoke and shared personal stories about why they are involved in this year’s heart walks. Dunn and Amin encouraged attendees to spread the word about heart health and to continue to build their teams. Representatives from the American Heart Association were also in attendance to help answer questions about the event. The Hampton Roads Heart Walk events will be held on Oct. 10 at Mount Trashmore in Virginia Beach and on Oct. 17 at Peninsula Town Center in Hampton. Check out this year’s NNS Heart Walk Video at nns.huntingtoningalls.com/videos or on HII’s Facebook page from a home computer. The walk is FREE to register for and all NNS team participants, including friends and family, receive an NNS T-shirt. There is still time to become a Team Lead or to join an existing NNS team. For more information, visit www.HamptonRoadsHeartWalk.org or contact Amy McDonald (O29) at 688-6489.

L&H Leaders Attend Stand Down Meeting On Aug. 31, a Stand Down Meeting was held with all supervisors, foreman and general foremen responsible for Lifting and Handling (L&H) operations at NNS. During the meetings, which were held on each shift, X36 Trades Director Robert Chappell reviewed the evaluation and findings from the Navy Crane Center’s July audit of the L&H Program. Though the center gave Newport News Shipbuilding a “satisfactory” rating, it noted an increase in both crane and rigging accidents and also noted an increase in the severity of some of those accidents. “The increase in L&H related accidents is very troubling to me – no injury is ever acceptable,” Chappell said. “As leaders, it’s our responsibility to ensure that our crews are properly trained and working in the safest conditions possible from the time they step foot in the gate until the time they leave NNS to go home.” Chappell then lead a brief discussion about how recent incidents could have been prevented and what steps need to be taken in the future to avoid them from happening. Ray Bagley, vice president of Operations, and several directors from across the company also attended the meetings to show their support. “We wanted to show you these scores to put your mind back on the prize and turn things around,” Bagley said. “We’ve made a commitment with the crane center to drive the red line back down by next summer. 2011 was one of the safest years ever on record for the L&H team – if we did it back in 2011 – we can do

it again. Tomorrow is a new day and together, we are going to turn this around. I have confidence in each of you and I’m excited about this and I hope you are too.” Chappell then challenged L&H leaders. “Speak up if anything is standing in your way of this goal,” Chappell said. “We are here for you and will help you in every way that we can. Please cascade the information discussed at this meeting with your crew. You are the best in the business – go out there and make it count.” The presentation presented at the L&H Stand Down Meeting has been posted on the X36 webpage on Yardnet.

Kinder Honored at VPPPA Safety and Health Conference Michael Kinder (X15) received a Safety and Health Achievement Program award at the Voluntary Protection Program Participants’ Association’s annual Safety and Health Conference in Grapevine, Texas Aug. 24-27. “Congratulations to Michael on receiving this special award,” said Dru Branche, Health and Safety director, Newport News Shipbuilding. “It’s a testament to his dedication to the safety and health of both himself and his co-workers. While safety has always been a company priority, it was added as a company value last year, and our values start with our employees. Michael has done a tremendous

job taking the time to learn the many aspects of safety and health and to share these lessons with his team.” The VPPPA Safety and Health Achievement Program recognizes contributions of nonmanagerial employees at VPPPA member sites who have taken the initiative to learn and apply safety and health best practices. To be eligible for the award, employees must express safety and health program knowledge by completing a VPPPA workbook and perform safety and health outreach. WiSE Hosts “Diversify You” Lunch-and-Learn On Aug. 20, more than 50 employees attended a Women in Shipbuilding Enterprise (WiSE) lunch-and-learn focused on diversity. During the event, Chavis Harris, director of EEO and Diversity, and representatives of the Diversity Development Advocates Team (DDAT) Leah Colvin (E04), Mary McDermott (E81), Danyelle Saunders (O41) and Vannia Willis (E30) led a discussion themed, “Diversify You.” The presentation described opportunities for employees to diversify themselves through Employee Resource Groups (ERGs), Career Development resources, Career Pathways and STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) events and various mentoring programs. Monica Pringle (E44) and Crystle Cowart (E22) thought the presentation was great and provided encouragement. “I really enjoyed the leadership team speaking out on new opportunities both at work and outside of work,” said Cowart. “Diversity and inclusion does matter.”

Update on Parking and Transportation Initiatives Improvements to Hidens Parking and Shuttle Service Newport News shipbuilders participating in employee focus groups this year provided feedback and ideas to improve parking and transportation around the shipyard. While the Parking Committee is still in the process of implementing and evaluating many of the suggestions, improvements made to the Hidens Complex parking and shuttle bus service are scoring high marks with shipbuilders.

The improved shuttles also hit a high note with Jeffrey Baker (X31). “The drivers are all great – one even stopped before he went home to assist someone with battery trouble and got him going. I’ve been with the company 38 plus years. Through all my parking experiences for work, this service is a big help.”

For Ted Vazquez (X42) and Jason McManes (X75), being able to sleep an hour or two later in the morning at home is a benefit. “Before riding the shuttle, I’d get here at 5:00 a.m. just to find a parking space five blocks away. Then I would sleep in my car until 6:30. Now, I can park at Hidens at 6:30 and be inside the gate before 7:00,” Vazquez said.

HRT Bus Route Changes The focus groups and other employee feedback also resulted in changes to several HRT bus routes. After receiving NNS employees’ wish list, HRT made the following changes:

Improvements at Hidens included paving, painting, new lighting and signage, as well as the addition of a third shelter. More shuttle stops at the gates along Washington Avenue and extended operating hours have also made parking at Hidens more attractive. Brenda Johnson (O40), who regularly parks at Hidens, said, “Safe drivers, smiling faces, genuine ‘good morning’ and ‘have a great day’ comments are always nice when arriving and departing from work. The freshly painted shelters and new pavement are also a plus.”

HRT ferry routes and must be used at least 10 times per month. This is the third consecutive year NNS has invested in the HRT GoPass365 Program to make it more convenient and less costly for employees to commute to work.

To address concerns about safety, NNS Security patrols the area more frequently and emergency call boxes will be installed in December. Since the changes, over 300 vehicles are now regularly parked at Hidens and there’s space for 300 more.

Continued Investment in Free HRT GoPass365 Program In July, NNS provided 1,250 free Hampton Roads Transit GoPass365 to shipyard employees. The passes allow employees to travel free on all HRT buses, the Tide, VB Waves and

• Added a new Route 966 departing from the Virginia Beach Silverleaf Commuter Station at 5:45 a.m. to the NNS North Yard with stops along Washington Ave. at 49th and 46th Streets. The afternoon trip departs the North Yard at 3:40 p.m. • Max Route 961 – afternoon trip now stops at 49th and 46th Streets on Washington Ave. • Route 405 – adjusted time to depart Newport News Transit Center at 3:40 p.m. • Routes 106/107 – now stops at 49th, 46th, 41st and 37th streets. September 8, 2015 Dear Shipbuilders: As you know, we have been actively looking for opportunities to reduce cost while also planning for a reduction in our workforce. I wanted to update you today on the status of layoffs, as well as share with you changes I am making to improve efficiencies across the organization. Regarding layoffs, the number of people being impacted this year is less than what we originally anticipated. This is due in part to cost savings, as well as higher attrition, growth work on some of our contracts, and additional off-site work. Because of these efforts, the total number of people leaving the company in 2015 will be less than 500 salaried employees, which does not require advanced notifications. This is an important change, as the affected employees will separate from the company on the day they are laid off, and will not work for a 60-day period as originally communicated. We are still planning for these layoffs to occur in the fall timeframe, and more information will be provided then. As part of our efforts to reset the business, reduce cost and improve efficiencies across the business, we are making some organization realignments. All direct planning, supply chain planning and production control functions will be brought together into a single organization called Central Planning. Brian Fields will transition from his current assignment as the vice president of Supply Chain Management to vice president of Central Planning. Central Planning will be chartered with developing, coordinating, streamlining, improving and managing the Navy program work plans, reconciling workforce and capacity planning, and setting the pace for execution across the company. This division will also be responsible for the standardization of tools, planning processes and reporting metrics, as well as the Common Integrated Work Package (CiWP) effort to provide digital data to the waterfront. Over the next few weeks, Brian will work with the current directors and managers from across the company to develop his organizational structure, and will stand up the new division October 1, 2015. With this change, Rob Hogan, current vice president of Manufacturing, will assume the added responsibility for the Supply Chain organization. Rob’s new division will be called the Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management division. The combination of these two organizations will provide efficiencies by centralizing responsibility for providing all material to the shops, platen and ship, and enhancing our decision-making process about what we manufacture in house, and what we purchase from suppliers. This new division will also be stood up effective October 1, 2015. Both Brian and Rob will continue to report directly to me. I believe that their experience, leadership and innovative thinking will not only help to reshape our business, it will also make us a stronger, more inclusive, forward-thinking company. Please join me in supporting them in their new assignments. Thank you for your continued focus on performance. Your efforts are making a positive difference. Sincerely,

Matt Mulherin President
