Birdcage Team Continues to Deliver “Best Ever” Results On September 10, Virginia-Class Submarine Program (VCS) and Pipe Shop leadership recognized the birdcage team for delivering “best ever” cost performance for the sixth consecutive submarine. The team is responsible for building the largest pipe assembly on a VCS submarine, commonly known as the “birdcage.” To celebrate the accomplishment, leadership held a barbecue luncheon for the team. “The cumulative effect of these savings is very significant,” Pipe Shop Superintendent Kenton Meland told the team. “You have

HOLA to Host Hispanic Heritage Month Event September 26 Newport News Shipbuilding will recognize National Hispanic Heritage Month Sept. 15 through Oct. 15. The month is recognized to honor the contributions of Hispanic-American shipbuilders and to celebrate their rich cultural traditions.
NNS Leaders Give Back to the Community Six Newport News Shipbuilding leaders recently gave back to the community by volunteering at the Virginia Peninsula Foodbank. During the community service effort, the leaders filled and bagged more than six tons of food to provide more than 10,000 meals for local households. “Part of our engagement action plan is to spend more time together as team,” said Superintendent Steve Cataldo. “After discussing various ideas with the general foremen, it hit us – why not combine our team-building event with community service. We would be working together as a team as well as doing something good for the community at the same time. Within minutes, Jason Roach [general foreman] was on the phone setting up a date and time for us to volunteer at the Foodbank.” General Foreman Glenn Hicks thought the event was well worth his time. “It makes you feel good to help out an organization like the Foodbank that fills an important need. Our team’s service is just one example of how the employees of Newport News Shipbuilding volunteer to help the community,” he said. Roach added, “September is Hunger Action Month, so every team looking to foster relationships should consider this as a course of action.” Front row (L to R): General Foremen Jason Roach and Tim House. The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week. September 15 was chosen as the starting point for the celebration because it is the anniversary of independence for five Latin-American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico declared its independence on Sept. 16, and Chile on Sept. 18. In 1989, the observation was expanded from one week to a full month. The national theme for the 2014 observation of Hispanic Heritage Month is “Hispanics: A legacy of history, a present of action and a future of success.” NNS’ Hispanic Outreach Leadership Alliance (HOLA) Employee Resource Group will host a celebration from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Friday, September 26 in Bldg. 227 (also known as “Applebees”). The after-work event will include Hispanic food, music and door prizes. The guest speaker for the event will be Jennifer Boykin, vice president of Engineering and Design, and executive sponsor of HOLA. For more information, view the event flier or visit the HOLA website on Yardnet.
V-3 Recognizes NNS with Award On August 28, Virginia Values Veterans (V-3) recognized Newport News Shipbuilding during a summit in Richmond. NNS was presented with an award for the success of its veteran hiring practices. “Huntington Ingalls Industries employs thousands of military veterans and military reservists,” said Andy Schwartz, V-3 program manager. “They are committed to hiring candidates with prior military service and assisting their veteran and reservist employees. They are proud supporters of all branches of the U.S. military.” Since NNS’ initial certification on August 14, 2012, they have hired more than 800 veterans. Submarine North Dakota Delivered On Time and Below Target Cost On August 29, General Dynamics Electric Boat delivered North Dakota (SSN 784) to the U.S. Navy on time and $30 million below target cost. North Dakota is the 11th Virginia-class submarine (VCS) built by Newport News Shipbuilding and Electric Boat. SSN 784 is also the first of the eight-ship group of VCS known as Block III. “The full range of Block III improvements were successfully tested during North Dakota’s sea trials,” said Kurt Hesch, Electric Boat vice president and VCS program manager. “This is an important accomplishment that reflects the skill and commitment of everyone involved in the Virginia-class submarine program. Maintaining this level of performance helps the Navy attain its shipbuilding goals and ensures our continuing success as a business.”

Andy Green, vice president of Component Fabrication and Assembly, congratulated the team for a job well done. “This accomplishment says a lot about you and your ability to work together towards a common goal,” Green said. “The work you do is important not only for the VCS Program and the company, but also for the Navy and their ability to continue to be able to purchase ships.” Nathan Carducci (X42) believes that first-time quality has played a large role in the team’s success. “We strive to get things done right the first time,” he said. “So we don’t have to go back and do rework to fix mistakes. This has allowed us to complete our job on time or ahead of schedule. Our team also does a good job of coming up with innovative ideas to improve processes and using those new ideas to help us improve.” Welder Josh Chandler (X18) has helped weld the past two birdcages. “I think teamwork is the biggest key to our success,” he said. “We depend on each other a lot. Each of us wants to get our part of the project done so that other members can finish theirs. And when help is needed, people step up to the plate and help out.” In honor of their hard work, each member of the team was given a Newport News Shipbuilding polo shirt and coin. Pipe Shop Superintendent Kenton Meland holds a “Buy One, Get One Free” coupon during the appreciation luncheon for the birdcage team on September 10. Newport News Shipbuilding will undergo a surveillance audit of its Environmental Management System (EMS) and its Quality Management System (QMS) September 22-25. The American Bureau of Shipbuilding Quality Evaluations (ABS-QE) will conduct the surveillance audit. This audit will continue as an “integrated” approach in evaluating key areas of these two management systems. This means that personnel involved with discussions with the auditors will likely be questioned on both quality and environmental aspects of their work.
Environmental Management System (EMS) Audit Selected parts of the ISO standard 14001 will be audited. Employees may be stopped by auditors and interviewed about general awareness of the company’s environmental policy or how their job could affect the environment. Employees can refer to their green ISO 14001 badge cards or the O27 Environmental, Health and Safety Yardnet page as a reminder of the shipyard’s environmental policy.
Quality Management System Audit The audit team will review work documents associated with many of the areas of the shipyard, including records for equipment calibration, training, production control, product testing, internal audits, and corrective and preventive actions. Auditors may also request to randomly interview employees in both nuclear and non-nuclear work areas about work procedures to evaluate their work practices, overall awareness of Newport News’ quality management policies and the knowledge of the impact their work has. Employees should answer questions about how they normally accomplish their work. A successful audit will maintain the shipyard’s ISO 9001 certificate for the Quality Management System. NNS was first certified to ISO 9001 in 1993 and has renewed the certification every three years since. For questions contact Tony Burger (O04) at 534-3222.
