NNS Honors Model of Excellence Awardees

HII Family Health Center to Host Open House this Saturday

Newport News Shipbuilding honored the extraordinary achievements of 126 shipbuilders from across the company at the 2017 President's Model of Excellence Awards celebration at the Newport News Marriott at City Center on Thursday, Sept. 21.

Shipbuilders are invited to attend an open house at the HII Family Health Center from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept.

30, to see everything the facility has to offer.

The MOE is NNS' highest honor and recognizes teams and individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the company's strategic objectives through their performance and accomplishments in five categories: Courage to Make a Difference, Customer Satisfaction, Leadership, Innovative Excellence and Operational Excellence.

NNS President Jennifer Boykin congratulated this year's honorees for distinguishing themselves among more than 20,000 employees. "I believe that all of our shipbuilders come to work each day to do their job, and to do it well. And that is why being selected as a Model of Excellence is such an outstanding... achievement. You have all been chosen as the very best," she said.

No matter their role at NNS, shipbuilders proudly take on an awesome responsibility, Boykin added.

"Whether you are working on the deckplate, on a ship, in an office, a shop, or a warehouse, our work matters. We build and maintain the most complex ships in the world. At this moment, these ships are patrolling the oceans, protecting our nation and allowing us to safely be here tonight celebrating. Our work matters a great deal," Boykin said.

Doug Cook (X18) was among the honorees on the WSQ-9 Structural Install Team, receiving an MOE for Customer Satisfaction. Working in fleet support, he's used to fast-paced work, long hours and sometimes spending months away from his family during off-site projects like the one at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard in Hawaii that earned his team an MOE. "We exceeded on every aspect of the Hawaii job. I've been doing this for 20 years, and we excel on all of them. But on this one, we knocked it out of the park," he said. "It's an accomplishment just to be nominated for an MOE, and then to actually get the award, that's saying a lot."

Excellence. At NNS for 35 years, she said it was exciting just to be nominated for such a prestigious honor.

"I would say it's the highlight of my career," Williams said.

"Congratulations to everyone. It's quite an honor, and I'm proud of all of us."

Hispanic Heritage Month: Lauren Hamburg "Shaping the Bright Future of America" is the national theme for Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 – Oct. 15). To coincide with this year's theme, Newport News Shipbuilding is recognizing shipbuilders with Hispanic roots who are shaping the bright future of the company – through service, innovation and craftsmanship. Shipbuilders Carlos Araizaga, Miguel Cortez Jr., Mario Doreste and Lauren Hamburg are featured on this year's company-wide Hispanic Heritage Month posters. Articles about these shipbuilders will be published in Currents each week through mid-October.

Lauren Hamburg (E04) currently works with the company’s augmented reality (AR) business development team. In this role, she is responsible for conferring NNS’ AR expertise both inside and outside the yard, identifying potential collaborative partners for NNS, and identifying customers who may benefit from AR in the future.

She is extremely passionate about AR and excited to be on the forefront of a new technology. “AR is impacting our lives both inside and outside of the shipyard – the line on your TV screen during a football game and Snapchat filters you use when you look into your mobile device – that’s all AR.” Hamburg is often seen presenting to groups touring the Integrated Digital Shipbuilding Mobile Experience (MX). “I’m responsible for the AR portion of the tour,” she said. “During my presentation, I try to relate to guests as much as possible by using examples they can relate to like Snapchat or Ikea's furniture app. When they leave, I want them to feel inspired.”

She says that what we are sure of today can change tomorrow. “We must embrace change, be flexible and use technology to aid us in every way possible,” Hamburg says. “Our company has a tremendously bright future ahead, but we need all shipbuilders to voice their opinions and provide feedback on what works and doesn’t work. I can’t wait to see how the process of building nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and submarines will change over the next decade.”

Fourth-Generation Shipbuilders to Bid Farewell Brothers Neil Rawles (M53) and Mark Rawles (M53) literally grew up in the shadow of Newport News Shipbuilding.

"The first thing we saw when we woke up in the morning was the shipyard," Mark Rawles said. "It was pretty clear that more than likely we were going to work here." Generations of men in their family – four to be exact – have worked as shipbuilders at NNS. But now retirement is fast approaching for both brothers. Neil, a Master Shipbuilder, will work his last shift at the end of this week.

Mark – who worked at NNS for a short time in the 1970s, returning in 2003 – plans to exit in January.

The Rawles brothers' impeding retirements will close the book on their family's century of service at NNS. Their father, James Rawles, worked at NNS for 37 years before retiring in 1988. Their paternal grandfather, Presley Rawles, worked at NNS from 1916 until 1962.

Their maternal grandfather, Pervis Vick, also was a longtime shipbuilder.

And then there's the brothers' greatgrandfather, James "Big Jim" Lamphier. He came to Newport News from Pennsylvania to help erect the shipways that once stood at the current site of the Modular Outfitting Facility (MOF). After that work was done, Lamphier took a job at the shipyard, becoming somewhat of a legend along the way. There's even a bust of him at the Mariner's Museum.

announcement of his 1934 death. "We shall miss Big Jim. To know him was to love him, and everybody knew him."

With so much family history at NNS, the Rawles brothers have an extensive collection of historic shipyard memorabilia – including Shipyard Bulletins, old IDs, photos and paintings – dating back generations. So is this really the end of the line for their family at NNS? Mark Rawles has a daughter, but with her interest in the veterinary field, he doubts she will become a fifth-generation shipbuilder. However, the Rawles brothers still have a cousin at NNS, Bryan Vick (X15).

As his career as a shipbuilder comes to an end, Neil Rawles said he has seen a lot of changes since he came to NNS in 1977. "I've seen a lot of changes," he said. "Things that I never thought would come along." Although Neil Rawles has seen technology and automation change the business through the years, there is still a need for shipbuilders to do hands-on work, he added.

"Somebody's got to turn a wrench out here," Neil Rawles said. He's looking forward to retirement and focusing on his business restoring stained glass windows in churches and restaurants.

"I've been wanting to do this for 30 years," he said. "I've got a little bit of my health left and I'm going to go and pursue that dream."

Apprentice School Selects Centennial Theme The Apprentice School is planning a big celebration to mark its 100th anniversary in 2019. And now the celebration has a theme – "Celebrating a Legacy, Innovating the Future" – thanks to two Apprentice School employees.

Tanya Howard (O22) and Al Melton (O22) were among the students, faculty, staff and alumni who entered a contest to choose the school's centennial theme. After sifting through the entries, the committee formed to plan the celebration and develop a logo and a theme settled on a combination of Howard and

Melton's entries.

"They represent the theme itself," said Stan Best (O22), who serves on the committee. "Ms. Howard was hired this year, and Mr. Melton has been here 36 years. He represents the legacy, and she represents the future."

Melton and Howard were recognized by Apprentice School Director Everett Jordan. They both received director's coins and will have special seating at the Centennial Celebration Gala in 2019.

ISCVN Program to Present Quality Awards The In-Service Aircraft Carrier (ISCVN) Division is accepting nominations for its Quality Shipbuilder of the Week Award.

Every year in October, the ISCVN Division recognizes shipbuilders who demonstrate the highest level of commitment to firsttime quality in their daily work.

Each week in October, one nominee is selected as a winner. At the end of the month, one of the weekly winners will be selected as the ISCVN Quality Shipbuilder of the Month.

Shipbuilders Participate in Morning of Hope

Employees interested in submitting nominations, can ask their immediate supervisor to submit a nomination form by contacting Terry Gray (K69) at 380-7910.

About 90 Newport News Shipbuilding employees, their families, friends and pets took a stance on suicide prevention by walking at Hampton Roads Morning of Hope event at Mount Trashmore in Virginia Beach on Sept. 9.

Register for the Heart Walk

The event brought thousands of people together to raise awareness of depression as a treatable disease and of suicide as a preventable tragedy. Through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP), shipbuilders and their families can receive free sessions with licensed, confidential counselors who can assist with marital and family issues, stress, anxiety, grief, work pressures and more.

Newport News Shipbuilding is a sponsor of the Hampton Roads Heart Walk. The Peninsula walk is Oct. 21 at Peninsula Town Center in Hampton. The Southside walk is Nov. 4 at Mount Trashmore in Virginia Beach.

Team lead Heather Smith (X44/K74), lost her mother to a battle with suicide seven years ago.

Smith said the EAP's counseling service helped her turn heartache into the ability to help others.

"Sadly, a number of the shipbuilders who participated in the walk have lost a loved one to suicide.

That loss will stay with them forever, but the healing process is not impossible. Depression is treatable and suicide is preventable," she said.

Smith encourages shipbuilders to participate in next year's event. All are welcome to join NNS' employee resource group's team or a personal one; the power of healing is by taking every day, step by step. "Thank you to all who participated, supported and took the moment to care," she said.

Shipbuilder Steering the Way

National Cybersecurity Awareness Month

Welder Harry Dittrick (X18) was honored with a Level One On-the-Spot Ethics Award in August. Ray Bagley, vice president of Trades Operations, met with Dittrick to present the award and thank him for his actions.

Dittrick was welding a pipe penetration sleeve to the deck of the Sail Diesel Exhaust Bay in the Covered Modular Assembly Facility (CMAF). Both the pipe penetration sleeve and the deck were to be made of Inconel material.

However, Dittrick noticed the magnetic-base flashlight he was using as a secondary means of lighting stuck to the pipe penetration.

Realizing the magnetic base should not have been drawn to Inconel material, Dittrick immediately stopped welding and notified

his foreman. An investigation found the penetration was made of the wrong material.

October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and Newport News Shipbuilding's Cybersecurity Department is hosting several events to educate and encourage all employees to embrace good cyber hygiene habits that will solidify the company’s defenses against online attackers. Planned activities include NCIS presentations, lunch-and-learns and cyber hygiene checklists offered on the Cybersecurity (T51) website. T51 can tailor a lunch-and-learn for departments across the yard upon request (10 to 30 minutes) to share known threats and defenses that will help shipbuilders remain safe at work and home.

Prepare for Defense Security Service Vulnerability Assessment The 2017 Defense Security Service (DSS) Security Vulnerability Assessment is scheduled for the week of Oct. 23. The assessment will evaluate the effectiveness of Newport News Shipbuilding's security program to ensure compliance with the National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual (NISPOM). While all areas of NNS are susceptible to inspection for the assessment, classified holdings – inside the yard and external buildings – throughout the facility will be the focal area for the assessment. DSS auditors tour facilities during first, second and third shifts.

Take an Hour Events Begin Oct. 2 Shipbuilders are invited to receive free and confidential health screenings and flu shots in locations around the shipyard beginning Monday, Oct. 2, through Interactive Health's Take an Hour for Wellness program.

Events will be held during October and November, and results are not shared with NNS. Shipbuilders can schedule appointments for health screenings, but they are not required for those who only want a flu shot. Hourly employees will be provided a charge for Take an Hour events. Salaried employees are encouraged to flex their time.

Employee Engagement Survey to Begin this Week The company's annual employee engagement survey will begin Wednesday, Sept. 27, and run through October. All Newport News Shipbuilding employees will have an opportunity to participate, either by email or on paper. Individual responses are confidential, and results will be used to identify areas for improvement and action-planning.

"I really encourage all shipbuilders to take the few minutes to complete the survey. Be honest, and be thoughtful," said NNS President Jennifer Boykin. "This is your opportunity to be heard, by your teammates and by leadership – in your work area and across the shipyard.

We take the results of this survey seriously, and we will use your feedback to make important decisions about our company's future."

In addition to the survey, Boykin encourages all employees to actively engage in discussions with their supervisor and colleagues about continuous improvement to bring about innovative ideas.
