VCS Shipbuilders Complete NNS’ Final Module of Block III Recently, the Virginia-Class Submarine (VCS) Program completed the bow section module for South Dakota (SSN 790).

The bow module is the final NNS module of the Virginia-Class Submarine Block III contract. It is the largest and heaviest module and is built under a unique teaming arrangement between Newport News Shipbuilding and General Dynamics Electric Boat.

...South Dakota’s bow with a new record time in outfitting,” said VCS Director of General Manufacturing Rob Austin. “I commend the team on their continuous drive to achieve best-ever results.”

South Dakota is the 17th boat of the Virginia class. Final construction of South Dakota will be completed at Electric Boat in Groton, Connecticut.

Once complete, it will be 7,800 tons and 377 feet in length, have a beam of 34 feet, and operate at speeds greater than 25 knots submerged. It is designed with a reactor plant that will not require refueling during the planned life of the ship, reducing lifecycle costs while increasing underway time. It will have the capability to attack targets ashore with highly accurate Tomahawk cruise missiles and conduct covert long-term surveillance of land area, seaside waters or other sea-based forces.

Huntington Ingalls Industries Awards Educational Scholarships Last week, Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) announced that its newly established scholarship fund awarded 78 scholarships to pre-kindergarten and post-secondary students of HII employees.

HII’s third party administrator, Scholarship Management Services, a division of Scholarship America, received more than 500 applications, and through a selection process, based on both academic and financial need, the program awarded scholarships totaling in value of $210,000 for the first year and $504,000 over the award recipients program duration.

NNS participates in Energy Summit In August, representatives from Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS), and its subsidiaries Stoller Newport News Nuclear (SN3) and Newport News Industrial (NNI), participated in the 2016 Intermountain Energy Summit held in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Clean energy innovation related to nuclear, solar, wind, geothermal and energy storage was the focus of the summit.

Representatives met with industry and government leaders to discuss nuclear energy construction, maintenance, research and development, and NNS representatives provided a demonstration of augmented reality technology.

SN3 President Nick Lombardo provided an overview of NNS and its subsidiaries, SN3 and NNI, to company executives, researchers, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) officials, Idaho government officials and lawmakers.

Lombardo also served as a moderator to answer questions related to renewable energy and the challenges facing the nation’s energy needs.

NNS Vice President of Nuclear Propulsion Barry Fletcher participated as a panelist during the summit. Fletcher addressed misperceptions about clean energy and led discussions on the importance of nuclear energy and innovations in nuclear construction, manufacturing and new nuclear technologies.

Individual award amounts ranged from $1,500 for selected students enrolled in a two-year college program to $3,000 for selected students enrolled in a four-year program; the postsecondary awards are renewable for recipients who remain in good academic standing. The fund also awarded scholarships of up to $3,000 for pre-school education costs.

Of the scholarships awarded, 30 were granted to post-secondary students in four-year education programs, 16 were granted to post-secondary students in two-year technical/vocation programs, and 32 were granted to students in pre-kindergarten school readiness programs.

Newport News Shipbuilding Production Planner and Scheduler Gale Royal (X76), mother of a college scholarship recipient, is extremely grateful that the company acknowledges the importance of education.

“The fact that Mr. Petters would decline his salary for the program shows you how much he cares about his employees,” said Royal.

NNS Team Improves Inspection Process As a result of an X11 “Fit to Fit” initiative, an improvement team was recently developed and tasked with reviewing existing structural inspection processes at Newport News Shipbuilding. X11 “Fit to Fit” initiatives focus on improvements in the areas of health, safety, knowledge, proficiency and engagement.

After just a few weeks of collaboration and brainstorming, the team identified and conducted a test pilot to eliminate structural re-inspections of non-critical items. The pilot program was considered successful when random checks were conducted by Department X67 and zero discrepancies were identified.

“The new process has proven to reduce inspection time and reduce time spent on rework,” said Quality Test Inspector Derrick Hicks (X67).

After successful completion of the pilot program, and with support from X11 leadership, the improvement team incorporated the new process throughout New Carrier Construction Programs.

met with the improvement team to thank them for their efforts. “The new inspection process has increased engagement and accountability. “As we continue to be challenged with improving cost and schedule, we must find new ways to approach old processes,” said Sabol.

Career Pathways Offers Hands-on Training to Teachers Recently, Newport News Shipbuilding representatives from Career Pathways provided hands-on training for teachers at the Downtown Hampton Child Development Center (DHCDC).

The DHCDC is a nonprofit organization that serves approximately 160 children, from six weeks to five years of age.

Throughout the day, teachers were able to participate in demonstrations that offered new ways of incorporating principles of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) into the DHCDC’s curriculum.

The demonstrations gave teachers a glimpse around the world through the use of Google Cardboard virtual-reality goggles. They were also taught how to create homemade slime using Elmer’s glue, borax and water.

During a recent crew talk, Carroll Goodwyn (X31) brought a concern about an old pipe bending tool to his supervisor Rodney Huffman (X82/X31). The tool was not functioning properly and was causing the mechanics some discomfort. Goodwyn suggested that Huffman find a new machine that was easier to use and helped the mechanics in tight spaces. Huffman, who encourages his crew to bring new ideas to the table, quickly took action. Within a few weeks, and with the support of both Make-up Foreman Steven Ours and Industrial Engineer Steve Harbick, Goodwyn’s suggestion became a reality and a new pipe bending tool was purchased for the crew.

Employees with computer access will be sent a link to the survey via email and employees without computer access will be given a paper copy. As always, the 17-question survey is entirely confidential and shouldn’t take longer than 15 minutes to complete (note: participating hourly employees will be paid for time spent completing the survey).

Newport News Shipbuilding’s senior leadership team takes the results of this survey very seriously and uses them to help each team learn what they can do to create a positive workplace where all employees can thrive. Company survey results will be shared with all employees at a later date.

To recognize Cybersecurity Awareness Month in October, the Cybersecurity division will host a lunch and learn event from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. in VASCIC-Room 2 West on Oct. 4. During the event, a presentation will be given by a special agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) who will talk about “Ransomware,” a type of malware that prevents or limits users from accessing their system. The presentation is intended to educate employees on how to protect themselves and the company against cybersecurity threats.
