NNS Heart Walk Teams Are Looking for Additional Walkers

A weekly publication of Newport News Shipbuilding

The Heart Walk is the American Heart Association’s premiere event for raising funds to save lives from the United States’ No. 1 and No. 4 killers - heart disease and stroke. The walks are designed to promote physical activity and heart-healthy living in a family-friendly environment. Newport News Shipbuilding’s Heart Walk teams are looking for additional walkers for the Peninsula and Southside Heart Walks. The Peninsula Heart Walk will be held at Peninsula Town Center on Oct. 18 and the Southside Heart Walk will be held at Mt. Trashmore on Oct. 25. A FREE T-shirt will be given to shipbuilders who sign up for a team on a first-come, firstserved basis. For more information, visit HII’s Facebook page from a home computer or contact NNS’ Heart Walk Lead Britta Brown Zambrana at 688-2786.

Shipbuilders Take Advantage of HHWD and Shredding Event On Sept. 20, more than 150 Newport News Shipbuilding employees took advantage of the Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) sponsored Household Hazardous Waste Day (HHWD) and Shredding Event. “One of the lessons learned from the 2013 event was to advertise further in advance,” said Frank Thorn, EH&S manager. “So this year we started advertising two months prior to the event and it really made a difference. We averaged 38 vehicles every hour for four hours so this was a 34 percent increase in employee participation compared to last year.”

Thorn added, “Right now, we know that 18,500 pounds of latex paint was collected during HHWD, which is 3,500 more pounds than last year. NNS should have the other collection totals in the next few weeks after they are taken to their processing plants throughout the country.” Continue to check future editions of Currents for additional collection totals.
