Time Clock Replacement Project Begins Shipbuilders will soon have access to newer, more modern time clocks. Newport News Shipbuilding began a phased replacement of hourly time clocks last week. The old clocks – some of which have been in use for nearly 20 years – are now technologically obsolete, according to Ashley Weymouth-German (O79), who is helping to lead the replacement project. "With NNS' focus on modernization, the company has made a concerted effort to bring newer technologies into the yard to better streamline operations and improve the overall user experience. The newer clocks do just that," he said. CONTINUED ON PG 2

USS Washington (SSN 787) Officially Joins the Navy's Fleet The Navy commissioned USS Washington (SSN 787) during a ceremony at Naval Station Norfolk on Saturday, Oct. 7. In her remarks, Newport News Shipbuilding President Jennifer Boykin said Washington was delivered in May as the most complete and mission-ready ship of its class to date. "This submarine – like her sister ships of the class – represents the very best of American manufacturing, innovation and pride," she said. "These traits apply to every aspect of the Virginia-class shipbuilding program, including its acquisition process, which has enabled a steady drumbeat of production." Named in honor of the nation's 42nd state, Washington is the 14th Virginia-class submarine to join the Navy's operational fleet. Two VCS ships are built each year. CONTINUED ON PG 2

Time Clock Replacement Project Begins CONTINUED FROM PG 1

The new time clocks are Windows 10 devices and include a 10-inch touchscreen, a keyboard, a weatherized case and a built-in barcode scanner. They also feature proximity readers – similar to gate entry today – for user authentication instead of the current badge swipe method. The clocks will be able to store data/time entry in a disconnected state if the network goes down and have the ability to monitor and receive system updates. Instructions are available on MyNNS and will be posted at each time clock location. Overall clock functionality will remain the same for now, but there are plans for upgrades. "In the near future, the new clocks will be capable of communicating directly with MyTime, allowing for electronic time certification in lieu of the time consuming paper certification process that exists today," Weymouth-German said. "Moving forward, the team is also evaluating options on how best to deploy a time app to mobile devices like tablets and smartphones." The first phase of the replacement project will include the installation of 50 new clocks, which will be monitored and evaluated by Information Technology. The full replacement project, which involves approximately 900 time clocks, will be complete in 2018. "We won't know what challenges we will face as a nation in 10, 15 or 20 years, but we know because of the work being done now at Newport News and Electric Boat and by the sailors who call this ship home, USS Washington will be prepared for whatever is to come," said Ship’s Sponsor Elisabeth Mabus. Disability Awareness Month: Christopher Vassura Christopher Vassura (X47) has been working at NNS for six years. He began his shipbuilding career as an X11 Shipfitter Apprentice and is now a Production Planner and Scheduler in the Virginia-Class Submarine Program, responsible for grouping and routing material for shop and ship use. Vassura will never forget the day that changed his life forever. "On April 9, 2016, I made the irresponsible decision to operate my jeep after consuming alcohol at a festival," he said. "On the way home, I missed my turn and proceeded to make an illegal U-turn – as I was turning back into oncoming traffic, I was hit by a Chevy Silverado going 55 miles per hour. Thankfully, no one suffered major injuries except for myself, however, I did receive a DUI for my actions." Vassura spent the next 29 days at the hospital undergoing eight surgeries including amputation of his left leg below the knee. "Putting on my prosthetic leg for the first time and not knowing how to walk or trust the device that I would now be dependent on for the rest of my life was the scariest thing I've ever experienced," he said. Since becoming an amputee, Vassura's outlook on life and on those with disabilities has changed. "As an amputee, I'm now faced with daily challenges that I had never really thought about before losing my leg. Before, I never thought of people with disabilities as being 'weak,' but I also never thought of them as being 'strong.' I now think of people with disabilities – whether physical or non-physical – as being the strongest people in the world today. I have great appreciation for the challenges they are constantly overcoming and their strength to find ways to reach their goal or simply live life." Vassura plans to participate in a 5K and various other races before year's end. "I want people to know that if you fall, get back up and learn from your mistakes and keep pushing to reach your goals and aspirations." View or print Vassura's poster on MyNNS.

Dorothy Goes Digital Tugboat Dorothy, the first ship delivered by Newport News Shipbuilding in 1891, probably doesn't come to mind when shipbuilders hear about NNS' digital transformation. But maybe it should. Paul Hamor (E63) and Sean Harris (E65) recently used a FARO laser scanner to survey the 126-year-old ship, which sits along Washington Avenue near 41st Street. Harris and Hamor are collaborating with Dimensional Control (O68) to scan the ship and create a 3-D model. "It's awesome to have an eight-minute scan rotate around and give you a 3-D representation of a 126-year-old ship. The fact that we're able to make a 3-D point cloud and use that to take measurements is pretty incredible," Harris said. Scanning Dorothy gives Hamor, Harris and their collaborators data they can use to demonstrate the capabilities and benefits of laser scanning technology. "Laser scanning allows us to get on and off the boat quickly. We can take measurements

from the office without having to travel to the ship constantly. It saves us a lot of time and effort," Hamor said. "We used to send boxes and boxes full of drawings out to the ship. Now, we don't have to." The scans will also be shared with Facilities to help preserve the historic ship, which Hamor said is like a mascot for the shipyard. "I remember as a kid when they first put it up here. To be able to do something like this to help preserve it is pretty cool," he said. "I love working with this technology. We're constantly looking at new technology and things that we can bring in to help us do our jobs faster and better."

Roadshow Brings Safety Expo to Shipbuilders Members of Safety Task Teams from Component Fabrication and Assembly (CFA) spent the past two weeks traveling to four different CFA shops to put on a roadshow in preparation for the Newport News Shipbuilding Safety Expo later this month. Held during lunch, the pre-expo roadshow stops gave craftsmen and craftswomen – many of whom have never had an opportunity to attend the NNS Safety Expo – the opportunity to experience what the expo is like, according to Terry Gray (X42). He has led the joint expo effort of all CFA safety task teams for the past three years. "This year we are joining forces yet again, and we wanted to reach out to our own

teams so they can have the experience if they desire," he said. The pre-expo roadshow's theme was "sensing safety," and it included stations highlighting the importance of the five senses – sight, sound, smell, taste and touch – and how they each contribute to safety. Attendees could participate in several challenges to test their senses. Shannon Addison (X42) leads the ESHP Safety Task Team and worked on the roadshow. "There are things I didn't even know," she said as she manned the "smell" station. "There could be something here that helps

a mechanic do their job in a safer and more efficient way. We don't want anyone to miss out." This year's NNS Safety Expo will be held Oct. 24-25.

Jacobs Delivers Keynote Speech at Chamber of Commerce Event Susan Jacobs, vice president of Human Resources and Administration, was the keynote speaker at "The Glass: Evolving the Business Woman," hosted by the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce on Sept. 28. During the event, she introduced eight female shipbuilders from NNS:

Deidra Bethea (E15), Marcia Stewart-Downing (O36), Heather Rugnetta (E86), Tonia Smith (X47), Britta Brown-Zambrana (K93), Amarita Strange (O20), Deborah Rogers (T51) and Janet Jones (X31). Read Jacobs' full remarks on the HII website.

NNS Helping to Prepare Training Ship USS San Francisco (SSN 711) was built at Newport News Shipbuilding and commissioned in 1981. No longer in active service, the ship is now undergoing conversion into a moored training ship (MTS), and NNS shipbuilders are working to help prepare San Francisco for its second life. Once work is completed, the ship will be one of two training submarines moored in Charleston, South Carolina. This is NNS' first foray into moored training ships. "The training of nuclear operators is so critical to the success of our fleet. It's an honor for Newport News to be involved with these moored training ships," said Program Manager Michael Diggs. "We are playing a vital role in training operators while building the Virginia platform all around the MTS module." NNS' role in the ship conversion involves the Reactor Compartment Forward (RCF) module. Manufactured by General Dynamics Electric Boat, the RCF module arrived at NNS in September. Shipbuilders in the Virginia-Class Submarine (VCS) Program will spend the next seven months outfitting the module. The work includes welding the side passageway to the hull,

installing an upper-level walkway, loading lead ballast, fitting nine piping systems and ventilation and electrical work. "The modules that are being inserted into the existing submarine are new construction, which is why our VCS workforce is managing and executing this job. NNS understands the importance of on-time execution and is working on the module in the heart of the VCS campus," Diggs said. Once work is completed, the module will be shipped to Norfolk Naval Shipyard for incorporation into the rest of the submarine. "We're able to help the Navy, and we're able to grow our business and show off all of the great things that we do. It's a true testament of the team effort here at Newport News," said Construction Director David Brinkley III. "It shows off the great ability of our craftsmen and craftswomen to execute in a very timely manner in support of what our country needs."

Hispanic Heritage Month: Carlos Araizaga Shaping the Bright Future of America" is the national theme for Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15 – Oct. 15). To coincide with this year's theme, Newport News Shipbuilding is recognizing shipbuilders with Hispanic roots who are shaping the bright future of the company – through service, innovation and craftsmanship. Shipbuilders Carlos Araizaga, Miguel Cortez Jr., Mario Doreste and Lauren Hamburg are featured on this year's company-wide Hispanic Heritage Month posters. Carlos Araizaga is a machinery installation apprentice working on John F. Kennedy (CVN 79), the nation’s newest aircraft carrier under construction at NNS. “When I first began working at NNS four years ago, I was working in the VirginiaClass Submarine Program,” said Araizaga.

“However, when work on Kennedy began to ramp up, I was transferred to the New Aircraft Carrier Construction Program. It’s been challenging adjusting to a ‘carrier environment,’ but like any other challenge I’ve encountered, I’ve learned to be flexible and adapt.” Araizaga says there is a lot of pride that goes into building an aircraft carrier. “By far, it’s been one of the most impressive experiences I’ve ever been a part of,” he said. “Knowing that I’m contributing to the construction of a vessel that will one day be the most technologically-advanced ship in the world – and will protect our freedom and provide humanitarian support to those in need is truly a privilege.” He says he hopes to be a role model for other shipbuilders through his integrity and

work ethic. “I’m always looking for ways to improve processes and make work more efficient,” he said. “The safer we can be, the more efficient we can be, and the smarter we can be – the better product we will be able to provide to our customer.” View or print Araizaga’s poster on MyNNS.
