NNS Completes First Fully-Outfitted Module for Block IV Contract The Virginia-Class Submarine (VCS) Program recently completed the Auxiliary Machinery Room (AMR) module for Vermont (SSN 792). This is the first fully-outfitted module of the Block IV contract. A team of Newport News Shipbuilding trades employees build all the AMR modules for both NNS and Electric Boat submarines in the Covered Modular Assembly Facility (CMAF). “Our craftsmen and craftswomen take great pride in meeting the challenging schedules for these complex modules,” said Foreman Jeff Bailey (O22). “Once again, we had effective teamwork among the different crews outfitting the AMR across all three shifts. And the team continues to build a strong reputation for safety and quality.”

This was the 19th VCS AMR module that NNS has built, and all of them have been delivered on schedule. “I am extremely proud of the CMAF team for achieving this principal event for the program and for the Navy. Outstanding craftsmen and craftswomen from all trades completed precision work while achieving best-ever safety results,” said Matt Needy, vice president of the Virginia-Class Submarine Program and Fleet Services. The completion of the habitability module for Vermont (SSN 792) is next for the Virginia-Class Submarine Block IV contract. This is the largest module that the CMAF builds. Donations Needed to Support The American Red Cross for Hurricane Matthew Relief Thousands of people along the southeastern coast of the United States were impacted by Hurricane Matthew over the weekend. Many of those in the storm’s path evacuated their homes, taking only a few items. The American Red Cross is currently providing food, shelter and relief supplies to those affected. Huntington Ingalls employees are assisting the Red Cross with these relief efforts through our corporate Red Cross Disaster Relief site at www.redcross.org/cm/huntingtoningalls-emp. The link can also be found on the MyNNS homepage. Please consider joining fellow employees in supporting this urgent need.

NNS Awarded Planning Contract for Eisenhower Newport News Shipbuilding recently received a $12 million contract from the U.S. Navy for planning work on the aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) as part of its planned incremental availability. The contract is for work to be completed by Sept. 17, 2017 and includes planning, material procurement and fabrication in support of executing the required work. “Maintaining the in-service aircraft carrier fleet involves complex work that requires significant planning and preparation,” said Chris Miner, vice president, In-Service Aircraft Carrier Programs. “This planning period enables us to work closely with our Navy customer to develop a framework to ensure successful project execution.” USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) is the second Nimitz-class aircraft carrier and the first ship named after the 34th president of the United States. The ship was launched in October 1975 by Newport News and is homeported at Naval Station Norfolk.

O19 Contracts and Pricing Employees Complete Certification Program On July 29, employees from the Contracts and Pricing Division completed a certification program in Government Acquisitions and Contract Management through Florida Institute of Technology (FIT). This was the first cohort to complete the 18-month program offered at The Apprentice School. The employees received graduate-level instruction from government contracting professionals in the areas of negotiations, contract types, federal acquisition regulations and requirements, and processes used for U.S. Government contract acquisitions. “Completion of the program enhanced our skills and competencies as contract professionals,” said Senior Cost Estimator Brad Miller (O19). “In addition, we gained a unique perspective from our government counterpart’s point of view.”
