NNS Employees Wear Pink to Raise Awareness for Breast Cancer Women in Shipbuilding Enterprise (WiSE) encouraged employees to wear pink on Thursday, Oct. 13, in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Employees dressed in pink and met at the Dorothy, outside of Bldg. 520, to take a group photo during lunch. Visit the WiSE website on MyNNS to view other photos of employees wearing pink around the yard. HII Hosts Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus at Newport News Shipbuilding Last week, Huntington Ingalls Industries hosted Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus at Newport News Shipbuilding. Mabus toured the aircraft carrier Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) and recognized more than 1,000 shipbuilders and sailors for their hard work on the construction and testing of the ship. Mabus also discussed Navy and Marine Corps accomplishments over the past seven years, including the Navy’s work in innovation, energy, shipbuilding, personnel initiatives and partnerships. “What the Navy gives America is presence—not at the right place at the right time, but all the time,” Mabus said. “Quantity is a quality all its own. These shipbuilders produce great American ships. With aircraft carriers, we get on station faster, stay there longer, and we bring everything we need.” Matt Mulherin, president of Newport News Shipbuilding, and Capt. Richard McCormack, Ford’s commanding officer, accompanied Mabus on the ship tour. Ford is 99 percent overall complete, and less than 10 percent of the overall testing program remains.

“Secretary Mabus’ encouraging words mean a lot to these men and women who have worked hard to bring Gerald R. Ford to life,” Mulherin said. “Like all lead ships of a new class, Ford has come with its challenges. The shipbuilders and Ford crew have tackled each challenge together and without hesitation. I’m very proud of their perseverance, and I’m honored to be a part of building this great ship.” Mabus is the 75th Secretary of the Navy and a former Navy officer, having served aboard the cruiser USS Little Rock (CLG 4). During his tenure, Mabus has worked to improve the quality of life of sailors, Marines and their families; decrease dependence on fossil fuels; strengthen industry and international partnerships; and increase the size of the Navy fleet. “Under the secretary’s leadership, greater priority has been placed on shipbuilding contracts, which helps us maximize learning curve efficiencies in ship construction and provides stability to our industrial base,” Mulherin said. “We value Secretary Mabus’ unwavering support and greatly appreciate his time with us today.”

Career Pathways Recognizes Volunteers to Kick Off School Year Recently, Newport News Shipbuilding’s Career Pathways Program held a volunteer recognition event to recognize volunteers and to kick off the 2016 school year. The event included several activities, including bingo, trivia, video testimonials and a hands-on demonstration with a paint simulator. During the event, the programs’ top ten volunteers were honored for their commitment. One of Career Pathways top ten volunteers, John Banks (E73), was asked why he is passionate about volunteering his time. “Being a Career Pathways volunteer means giving back my engineering skills and talents to the surrounding communities while enhancing the future of young individuals who are interested in STEM-related fields,” said Banks. “The time spent with these young, inquisitive minds fuels the passion I have to ensure they succeed, and in turn, rejuvenates me to press forward in this ever-changing field of engineering.” The Career Pathways Program works with Hampton Roads Public Schools on behalf of Newport News Shipbuilding to mentor students and provide opportunities to experience future career paths. The partnership provides a unique opportunity for the business to contribute directly to the school experience of the youth, who are just beginning to formulate dreams for the future. Career Pathways initiatives include teacher internships, job shadowing, clubs/activities, middle school partnerships, career fairs, speakers bureaus and other Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) related initiatives.

The top ten volunteers stand with the Career Pathways team during a recognition event held in Bldg. 520. I’ve heard everything degrading you can think of over the years—‘baby,’ ‘sweetheart,’ ‘baby girl.’ I want you to talk to me the same way you talk to your mom because I’m a woman. 2016 United Way Campaign Kicks Off This Thursday Newport News Shipbuilding’s United Way Campaign kicks off this Thursday, Oct. 20, and will run through Friday, Nov. 4. The United Way has a 77-year history of caring for the community. It unites people from the community to identify critical issues and develops solutions with a focus on children and youth, basic needs, self-sufficiency, and community health. NNS has been a major partner of the United Way since its founding, a tradition that the company continues each year. By making a contribution to the United Way through payroll deduction, employees can have a significant impact on the wellbeing of the community. This year’s campaign slogan, “Newport News Shipbuilding Underway for United Way,” submitted by Mark Williams (T55), was selected among 61 entries during the 2016 United Way Campaign Slogan Contest. In the coming days, NNS United Way coordinators will distribute the 2016 United Way Enrollment Guide to employees. NNS has a goal to raise over $1.5M, and employees that donate $150 per year or more will receive a “smart card” to use for discounts at businesses and restaurants in the Hampton Roads area.
