Shipbuilders Raise Awareness for Heart Health On Oct. 18, more than 40 HII, Newport News Shipbuilding and AMSEC teams participated in the Peninsula Heart Walk. Prior to the start of the walk, the American Heart Association (AHA) held a ceremony to recognize “Lifestyle Change Winners,” individuals who have made positive changes to their daily life. NNS shipbuilder Richard Pierce (O39) was one of the three participants recognized. Before presenting Pierce with a plaque, AHA representatives spoke about Pierce, “Richard has made significant changes to his lifestyle, not only to improve his life, but the life of his family. Robert recently lost 45 pounds after joining a workplace wellness program that encouraged him to eat better and incorporate fitness into his life. Because of that program, he walks, bikes, swims and hikes. Fitness has become part of his lifestyle.”

NNS Team Lead Britta Brown-Zambrana was impressed with this year’s event. “The walk is a great opportunity for the community to come together and raise awareness... CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

More than 20 girls from Booker T. Washington Middle School attended the GEMS kick-off meeting after school on Oct. 9. Photo by Chris Oxley

Career Pathways Kicks Off New Venture, “Girls with Engineering Minds in Shipbuilding” On Oct. 9, Career Pathways kicked off “Girls with Engineering Minds in Shipbuilding” (GEMS), an after-school program at Booker T. Washington Middle School focused on increasing local girls’ interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers. During the kick-off meeting, Stephanie White, GEMS lead, gave an overview of the various hands-on engineering projects they will participate in throughout the school year and introduced them to their mentors, a select group of volunteer female engineers from Newport News Shipbuilding. “With females being an underrepresented group in the engineering field, we hope to make an impact on the lives of girls, starting at the middle school level. We hope to inspire them to pursue an educational path, in high school through college that will lead to a career in engineering,” said White. Leah Colvin, GEMs mentor, said, “I look forward to working on the engineering activities with the girls and sharing my personal journey that led me to pursue an engineering degree and become an engineer at NNS. I hope to motivate the girls by showing them that STEM academics and engineering careers can be very interesting and rewarding.”

Apprentice Graduate Receives Scholarship Garry Garner, Apprentice School Class of 2014, recently received a $1,000 scholarship from the Virginia Apprenticeship Alumni Association (VAAA). Household Hazardous Waste Day volunteers dispose of waste collected during this year’s event on Sept. 20. Photo by Troy Cooper

EH&S Announces HHWD and Shredding Event Totals Environmental Engineering has confirmed that more than 26,000 pounds of household hazardous waste and shredded paper was collected during this year’s Household Hazardous Waste Day (HHWD) and Shredding Event on Sept. 20. The 26,000 pounds of materials collected consisted of: latex and several other different types of paints, different types of oils, gasoline, batteries, adhesives, aerosols, pesticides, fluorescent bulbs, propane cylinders and shredded paper. The latex paint was delivered to the NASA Steam Plant for reuse in the Waste to Energy Program which provides steam for the NASA facilities. The shredded paper was taken to a processor in Richmond and recycled into more paper. Many of the other flammable materials were taken to Clean Harbors permitted facilities for reuse into a Fuels Blending energy recovery program. At this year’s event, employee participation increased by 34 percent, which led to 77 percent more waste collected. Feedback from shipbuilders was very positive. Due to event success, EH&S plans to hold HHWD and Shredding Event on the third Saturday in September each year. EH&S would like to thank all the volunteers that supported this year’s event.

Protect Yourself from crime

The fall season is here and with it comes an end to daylight savings time for 2014. On Sunday, November 2 at 2:00 a.m. the clocks will turn back an hour. Your safety is of the utmost importance to us - so please use caution. Here are a few tips on staying safe from Security and Emergency Management (Dept. O15).

Don’t

Do

Walk or jog when the streets are dark or deserted.

Trust your instincts and remain alert – if a situation seems dangerous or threatening call 911 and report the crime to the Police or *911 or 380-2222 for NNS Security.

Display cash or any inviting targets such as cell phones, hand-held electronics or expensive jewelry and clothing. Be distracted when using mobile devices outdoors. Leave your vehicle running when it’s unattended. Give strangers a ride for any reason or let them into your vehicle. Indicate where you live to a person you don’t know. Give up your life. If you are robbed or assaulted, immediately call 911 and report the crime to the Police or *911 or 380-2222 for NNS Security. Try to describe the attacker accurately. Your actions can help prevent someone else from becoming a victim. Engage in conversation if confronted on the street, politely decline and keep as much distance from the person as possible.

If possible, park in well-lighted areas with good visibility and close to walkways, stores and other people. Always have your keys available. When out walking at night or before daylight, try to have a friend walk with you for company and comfort. Remember, there is safety in numbers. If you must walk alone to your vehicle and feel uncomfortable, call the NNS Security Command Center at 380-4031. If available, an officer will patrol the vicinity of your destination. If you have a car problem while at work (e.g. won’t start, has a flat tire, etc.), stay inside and call for help. Wait inside your locked car until assistance arrives. For non-emergencies, call a roadside service provider or NNS Security at 380-4031.

Program emergency numbers into your cell phone and be prepared to use them if necessary. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. If you think someone is following you, switch directions or cross the street.

E

RI

Let someone know when you’re leaving and inform them when you arrive at your destination.

Always lock your vehicle, even if it’s in your own driveway.

Open your door . If a stranger knocks on your door, don’t let them enter your residence. If they will not leave your property, call 911 – no exceptions!

If you know you’re going to be working late, try to park your vehicle closer to your building or exit gate.

If you witness or are a victim of a crime, please report it immediately to NNS Security or the local police agency for that city.
