NNS Employees Recognized for STEM Achievements Twenty Huntington Ingalls Industries employees were recognized for achievements in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) during the 21st annual Women of Color STEM Conference in Detroit, Oct. 13 through Oct. 15. Of the 20 total award recipients, seven were Newport News Shipbuilding employees.

Shipbuilders Participate in Heart Walk Approximately 2,000 Newport News Shipbuilding employees, family and friends, the largest group of employees from one company, signed-up for the Hampton Roads Heart Walk. NNS-registered participants walked approximately two miles around the Peninsula Town Center this past Saturday. “I love supporting this event in honor of my dad who had a heart attack,” said Carlos Bynum (X73). “We had a wonderful turnout and it is always a lot of fun while supporting a good cause.” This year, NNS employees raised more than $36,000 in donations to support the American Heart Association. Vannia Willis (E30), an 18-year engineering veteran at Newport News Shipbuilding, was presented a Community Service Award, which recognizes women of color who use technology in novel ways to improve access to STEM jobs and educational opportunities. Among her many activities to encourage youth participation in STEM, Willis helped start the first Lego Mind Storm Robotics Program in southeast Washington and developed a tutoring program for middle and high school students at a local church. She also organized a program that challenged students’ logic and strategic capabilities as part of Math, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA), and she serves as technology lead for First Robotics and NNS’ Girls Engineer Minds in Shipbuilding (GEMS) Program. She has also been lead coordinator for the Women of Color and BEYA K-12 STEM workshops since 2009. New Lost and Damaged Material Council at NNS A new lost and damaged material council has been established at Newport News Shipbuilding. The council is chartered with identifying and developing strategies to communicate and standardize best practices for material management at NNS. The council is made up of NNS shipbuilders with diverse knowledge, technical skill and leadership experience. “Material is a critical part of our business and each of us should take material management responsibility very seriously by being proactive,” said Vice President of John F.
