Apprentice School Celebrates First Annual “National Apprenticeship Week” During a White House Summit on Apprenticeship this past September, the U.S. Department of Labor announced a new “National Apprenticeship Week” to be celebrated annually in November. This year, the observance started Nov. 2. The purpose of the week is to honor registered apprenticeships throughout the country. In honor of “National Apprenticeship Week,” The shipyard’s Apprentice School hosted an essay contest in October featuring the question, “What has my apprenticeship meant to me?” The contest was facilitated by the school’s student-body government. The winning essay will be announced this week and will be posted to the U.S. Department of Labor’s website. On Oct. 27, Everett Jordan, director of education at The Apprentice

VCS Crew Breaks Record on Build Process for the “Ferris Wheel” In August, six shipbuilders working in the Sheet Metal Shop were challenged with building a structure known as the “Ferris Wheel” for Virginia-class submarine Vermont (SSN 792). This assembly protects Navy personnel from moving equipment and is one of the largest deliverables the Sheet Metal Shop has for the VCS program. The team was able to accomplish the build with zero accidents, 100 percent first-time quality, a 55 percent reduction in cost, and a 70 percent reduction in man-hours. The crew’s Foreman Billy Henderson credits the team’s success to teamwork. “As soon as we were tasked with the project, we sat down with representatives from Manufacturing Engineering and Planning (X59) and the company’s visualization team to develop a build plan to streamline the build process and determine the best way to assemble the guard,” he said. “It was an all-hands effort. The team came up with many new ideas and ways to improve the build process and assemble the guard. I can’t say enough good things about the collaboration efforts – they were outstanding.” Welder and Mechanic William Hurst said that the most challenging aspect of the build process was welding. “Some of the areas on the guard were very small, so the work was very time consuming,” said Hurst. “It was very helpful that almost everyone on the team is both a welder and mechanic, and capable of performing both types of work. Overall, we learned a lot and have several ideas on how we can improve on the next guard.” General Foreman Jason Roach said he is excited about the crew’s performance. “I’m especially excited about the ideas being evaluated to eliminate additional cost on future hulls,” he explained. “I have no doubt in my mind that this crew can build this unit and break records again.”

PROTECT YOURSELF FROM CRIME Sunday, November 1 marked the end of daylight savings time for 2015. As the days become shorter, Security and Emergency Management would like to remind all employees about the following safety tips. Take time to review the list below, so if you find yourself in a dangerous situation, you are better prepared. As always, if you witness or a victim of a crime, report it immediately to 911 or Newport News Shipbuilding Security Command Center (SCC) at *911 or (757) 380-2222.
DO
DON’T
Remember to always keep items secured and hidden from plain view inside your vehicle. It is always best to lock items in trunk when applicable.
Walk or jog alone when the streets are dark or deserted.
Have a plan. Know what you would do if a certain situation arises.
Trust your instincts and remain alert – if a situation seems dangerous or threatening, call 911 and report the crime to the Police or *911 or 380-2222 for NNS Security. If you know you’re going to be working late, try to park your vehicle closer to your building or exit gate. Let someone know when you’re leaving and inform them when you arrive at your destination. If possible, park in well-lighted areas with good visibility and close to walkways, stores and other people. Always have your keys available. When out walking at night or before daylight, try to have a friend walk with you for company and comfort. Remember, there is safety in numbers. If you must walk alone to your vehicle and feel uncomfortable, call the NNS SCC non-emergency number at 380-4031. If you have a car problem while at work (e.g. won’t start, has a flat tire, etc.), stay inside and call for help. Wait inside your locked car until assistance arrives. For non-emergencies, call a roadside service provider or NNS Security at 380-4031 Always lock your vehicle, even if it’s in your own driveway. Program emergency numbers into your cell phone and be prepared to use them if necessary. Be aware of your surroundings at all times. If you think someone is following you, switch directions or cross the street. If you witness or are a victim of a crime, please report it immediately to NNS Security or the local police agency for that city.
Display cash or any inviting targets such as cell phones, hand-held electronics or expensive jewelry and clothing. Be distracted when using mobile devices outdoors. Leave your vehicle running when it’s unattended. Give strangers a ride for any reason or let them into your vehicle. Indicate where you live to a person you don’t know. Give up your life. If you are robbed or assaulted, immediately call 911 and report the crime to the Police or *911 or 380-2222 for NNS Security. Try to describe the attacker accurately. Your actions can help prevent someone else from becoming a victim. Engage in conversation if confronted on the street, politely decline and keep as much distance from the person as possible. Open your door. If a stranger knocks on your door, don’t let them enter your residence. If they will not leave your property, call 911 – no exceptions!
