Taking Aim at the Flu Newport News Shipbuilding and United Steelworkers Local 8888 sponsored a drive-thru flu shot event Sunday and Monday that will resume next week, an effort that takes on greater urgency this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Flu shots were offered in the parking lot behind the union hall at 4306 Huntington Ave. The event continues Nov. 9 and 10 in the same location. Flu shots will be offered from 8 until 10 p.m. on Nov. 9 with two opportunities on Nov. 10: from 4:30 until 7 a.m. and from 2 until 5 p.m. These events are open only to represented employees. Shipbuilders must remain in their vehicles and wear a mask throughout the vaccine process. “Getting a flu vaccine is always important as we head into colder weather,” said Xavier Beale, vice president of Trades. “But with COVID-19 remaining a persistent threat, employees must be especially careful to guard their health in every way possible moving forward.”

Foundry Celebrates 250th Safety Improvement Douglas Boyd (A572), a chipper specialist, recently was honored for his role in developing a new safety improvement in Newport News Shipbuilding’s Foundry. It was the 250th such improvement implemented in the Foundry since NNS’ Safety Improvement Program began in 2017. In the Foundry, shipbuilders often work on large castings at elevations above chest height. Boyd worked with his management team to obtain several ladders with platformed top steps and safety rails on three sides to allow shipbuilders to work safely at slight elevations. The improvement also put the Foundry over its goal of 60 in 2020. Bob Schatzel, director of Component Fabrication and Assembly, and other leaders met with Boyd in October to present him with the Safety Improvement Award. “Mechanics partnering with management is essential to the generation of deckplate ideas that actually make

a difference in day-to-day operations,” Schatzel said. “It also shows that the team inside the Foundry truly operates as a team and that their real focus is on furthering safety for the entire organization.” Boyd, who has been involved in a number of other Foundry process improvements, also has been nominated for the 2020 CFA Director’s Safety Award.

Health experts have warned about the danger of an active flu season coupled with rising cases of COVID-19. While a flu vaccine doesn’t prevent COVID-19, it does protect against the flu, and people who get the flu can be more susceptible to contracting COVID-19. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends the vaccine for everyone 6 months of age or older, with rare exceptions. As a reminder, parking will be impacted for the Nov. 9 and 10 drive-thru events. A total of 88 parking spaces between 43rd and 44th streets behind the union hall will be secured at 4 a.m. on Nov. 7, and the parking spaces will reopen beginning at 9 p.m.

Parking Office to Move Temporarily The location for Parking Solutions hangtag and Hampton Roads Transit 365GoPass distribution will temporarily move to Bldg. 103-1, which is across from Dry Dock 2, beginning Nov. 3. Shipbuilders should follow posted signs. Email Parkingsolutions@hii-nns.com for more information. All parking and HRT passes will be handed out at Bldg. 103-1 until further notice.

Salaried employees can find in-network providers by logging into www.engage-wellbeing.com or use Anthem’s Engage Wellbeing app. The HII Family Health Center is holding walk-in flu shot events from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays until Dec. 19. Flu shot appointments also are available at the health center. Visit www.myquadmedical.com/hii/flu for details and appointment instructions.

Parking and Transportation Updates Newport News Shipbuilding parking lots remain open to employees on a first-come, firstserved basis. As a reminder, NNS’ open parking policy excludes parking spaces identified as 24-hour reserved, spaces used by government and U.S. Navy personnel, HII Family Health Center parking, privately owned and leased lots (including retail), expectant mother, visitor, and handicap spaces. Additionally, the policy does not apply to parking spaces inside shipyard gates. Illegally parked vehicles or vehicles parked in unauthorized spaces will result in towing at the owner’s expense Employees who cannot find a parking space, are encouraged to check the Bldg. 902 and 903 parking garages or Hidens – recently these parking areas have not been filled to capacity. Shuttles are available to transport employees to shipyard gates from these locations. Frequently asked questions about NNS’ open parking policy are listed on the NNS parking and transportation website.

REMINDER: DON’T FLUSH SANITIZING WIPES

Newport News Shipbuilding’s Facilities Maintenance Department reminds employees that sanitizing wipes are not flushable. They should be disposed of in waste baskets and not flushed. Wipes can get stuck in pipes and cause backups and overflows, which can cause restrooms to be out of service for extended periods of time. Remember to only dispose of single seat covers and toilet paper down the toilets.
