The winner of the 2014 Safety Song Contest is Derek Wilson’s (X11) “I Wanna Be Safe.” Wilson will receive $1,000 cash and will have a music video professionally produced by Newport News Shipbuilding’s Video Training and Communications Departments. The top five artists this year (in order) were: Derek Wilson (X11), Terry Gray (X42), Jeffrey Epps (O53), Chris Kelce (O43) and Deion Johnson (O43). Thank you to all shipbuilders who participated and voted. Look for Wilson’s music video later this year!

NNS Shipbuilders Recognized at STEM Conference Engineers Leslie Corsino (E82), Shineka Dixon (E72), Trina Garrett (E82), Bettina Soost (T53) and Towanda Tyler (E81) were recognized for achievements in the fields of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) during the 19th annual Women of Color STEM Conference in Detroit Oct. 23-25. The conference provides a national forum to celebrate the achievements of women in STEM, creates an environment for professional networking, and offers opportunities for role models to develop and nurture professional mentoring relationships. “I’m honored to have been inducted into this prestigious group of women who do Nuclear Pipe Shop Shipbuilders Continue to Stay Focused on Safety. ... outstanding work in technology and model the way for the next generation in the STEM field,” said Garrett. “The conference exceeded my expectations. I met women from all over the country representing many facets of their organization or company.” Dixon, Galon, Soost and Tyler received Technology Rising Star awards, which recognize young women who are helping to shape technology for the future. Garrett received a Technology All-Star award, which recognizes accomplished women of color from mid-level to advanced stages of their careers who have demonstrated excellence in the workplace and in their communities.

World’s Largest All-Electric Pipe Bending Machine Arrives at NNS On Oct. 29, the Detail Pipe Shop received the second and last shipment of the world’s largest all-electric pipe bending machine from Scarborough, England. The new machine is equivalent to a coach bus in size, weighs approximately 44 tons and will be used to bend pipes for both aircraft carriers and submarines. “The machine will replace two hydraulic bending machines that have already been removed from the shop,” said Pipe Shop Superintendent Kenton Meland. “Once the new machine is in production, it will enable Newport News...
