A Safety and Quality Focus with a Cost and Schedule Payout This eight-man team does it all, including all four electrical disciplines: wire-way, cable and component installation, and electrical hookup. The Virginia-class submarine crew has been together six years and continues challenging themselves to improve their performance on each boat. Although schedule and cost pressure increase, the team continues to focus on safety and quality. On Indiana (SSN 789) the team completed work on sections 5, 6 and 7 in record time, three months faster than ever before. “We have proven that if you focus on safety and quality, the cost and schedule piece will follow,” said the crew’s Foreman David Hall. Larry Evans believes cross-training helps the team succeed. He said, “We get a feel for what the other person is doing when we cross-train. We’ve learned about each other’s strengths and weaknesses and this helps us perform better as a team.” Team member Anthony Bailey explained, “We look out for each other and we focus on what we’re doing so we only have to do it once. We want first-time quality.”

Morgan Wright said, “Attitude is the key to success. If your job fails or succeeds it’s on you, so the outcome reflects the degree of ownership.” On Indiana, the electrical team had zero accidents, spent 23 percent less man-hours than budgeted, and reduced their quality findings by 90 percent over the last two boats. Hall explained, “We are one team being recognized, but we represent the other teams that perform just as well.”
ModSim Assists Operations with Tools to Assist with Forecasting Schedules and Tracking Performance The Modeling and Simulation (ModSim) Department (E04) has been working to provide adaptive planning support for various shipyard operations to give construction supervisors the tools necessary to assist with forecasting schedules and tracking performance. Since 2014, a team comprised of Analysts Russ Shaffer and Kelsey Shkuda and Software Developers Travis Evans and Thien Nguyen have been collaborating with Waterfront Construction Supervisors Tom Moran, Mike Wilson and Bob Kennedy to document processes, identify problem areas, and apply appropriate technologies. The collaboration has resulted in the “CVN 72 Compartment Completion” model, which was deployed in June to the X70/OF trailer with ModSim advanced apprentice Karina Lilliston. Lilliston coordinates the model use in support of the construction supervisors and also troubleshoots and validates the model simulation and compares it to the actual performance with Ken Spence (X70). Recently, ModSim developed a model to allow the Refueling and Complex Overhaul Division (X70) to track the status of sequential and simultaneous work packages necessary to overhaul 2,000 compartments aboard USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72). The value of this support was recently demonstrated when Outfitting

Construction Supervisor Floyd Mathis visited the trailer for a review session. “I hadn’t seen the model before, but quickly understood its purpose and the meaning of the results it showed,” he said. “The model results agreed with both the current status of my compartments and what I was anticipating in the near future.” Wilson added, “This tool has so much potential for the planning process – if we can find out where the process is broken up front, then we can minimize and mitigate deckplate problems in execution.”

What Does It Mean to Be a Veteran at HII? “Being a veteran and working at HII means that I have the opportunity to serve this great nation. Even though I am not going overseas and deploying to foreign lands as I did in the military, I continue to support the United States by contributing to building the greatest warships this world has ever known.”
John Youngblood (X43) “Having served on Navy ships for 21 years, I know the importance of and am proud to provide the sailors with high quality systems and equipment that they can rely on as they live on the ship and carry out the mission of defending the seas wherever needed.”
Bill Ogle (E25) “Being a veteran and working at HII building the finest warships and submarines in the world gives me great pride. In the military, I was a submariner. I learned, with a team, how to operate and maintain some of the most complex and modern submarines in the world. As a shipbuilder of 23 years, I am able to learn and hone my skills as a craftsmen to help the team build these vessels. We have a responsibility to the men and women of the U.S. Armed Forces to give them the most advanced ships with the finest craftsmanship to ensure their safety in the time of need. If we, all vets and non-vets, keep this in mind while working at HII, this will ensure our country’s safe and long future.”
Darren Mitchel (O64) “I served as a nuclear electrician’s mate in the Navy for 10 years. I served on a Los Angeles-class submarine that was built here at NNS, and USS Memphis (SSN 691), for almost five years. Then, for shore duty, I served in a shipyard environment at Naval Station Norfolk NRMD. I now work as a steam and electric plant test engineer for the Virginia-Class Submarine Program. The experience and skills that I learned in the Navy have directly translated to what I do now. Additionally, in the three years I have worked at NNS, each submarine I have worked on the USS Minnesota, the USS John Warner and the USS Washington, has had sailors serving aboard who I personally knew and had served with. I have friends and shipmates that will be relying on the ships, and I am helping to build them and get the mission done and to get them home safely. Having served on a submarine, I understand the conditions they will face, and that knowledge makes me more diligent in my daily work to ensure the Navy, my fellow shipmates and future generations of sailors get the best product I can give them.”
Hein-Peter Schnell (E84)
“Being a shipbuilder means that the mission continues. It may look different, but as a veteran at NNS, I am able to continue to be a part of something larger than myself, to make a difference and to do something I believe in.”
Liz Chandler (O63) “I spent 21 years in the submarine force. Serving in the Navy was the best thing that ever happened to me. After retiring, I had several jobs before being asked to apply here at the shipyard. I was hired in July 1999. It feels as if I have come full circle, from serving on boats to building them. My job allows me the privilege of ensuring that what goes on the boats does so with stability. In my job in E42, I have worked with both carriers and submarines. I feel as if what I do means something and has a purpose, just like when I was at sea, sitting in the sonar shack tracking the bad guys and gathering info. This job is what I would have done had I not gone into the Navy. This is a continuation of serving my country and I am proud to do so.” James Sargent (E42) “It’s a true honor. I’m humbled again to earn a living with men and women who are not only protecting our country with the weapons they build, but also protecting the men and women of our U.S. Navy with the quality they build.” Tim Mott (O25) “While on active duty, I considered it a great privilege to follow in my family heritage, wear the cloth of the nation and serve our country. Now, as a veteran employed at HII, I am afforded the opportunity to continue to serve our country by being a part of supporting the men and women on active duty and helping build quality submarines. Secondly, I have a vested personal interest in the submarine program as my son is currently in the nuclear submarine pipeline, training as a naval officer.”
Chip Galito (X10) “As a Navy veteran, I feel a connection to the ships and the sailors who call them home. Recently, touring USS Enterprise brought back memories of working and living at sea. All ships have unique qualities and characteristics that give them their own character and life. Being able to help bring these sea-going cities to life makes me feel as if I am making a difference in a sailor’s life.” Greg Robinette (T55) “As a retired Navy chief – a submariner in the Navy Nuclear Power Program – being able to work on ships is tremendously rewarding. It’s a continuation of a 20-year career, allowing me to work on modern warships and interacting with the officers and crew who will eventually take them to sea. The culture in HII fully supports veterans and values our input because of the at-sea, operational experience we bring to the table.”
Mark Friedrich (E19)
“Although I only spent three years in the Army, those years were vital to my development as a man. Being raised by a single mother in an environment not favorable to young males at that time, the Army instilled all the instincts of survival, the necessity of integrity and infused different ranges of discipline that I’ve passed down to my two children. All of those characteristics prepared me for my current employment at HII. As a young mechanic starting out, having the discipline to do what is asked of you is imperative when building the world’s best ships. Keeping and exercising your core values throughout any career path will continue to help a person grow. Even though I’m no longer actively serving in the military, it has been a blessing to still have a place to serve in a capacity where my work still matters when it comes to defending our nation.”
Brian Williams (X33/X70) “It means I have the privilege of working among other veterans and family members of veterans doing a job to help protect our country and our interests around the world. A group that is well aware of the shared sacrifices we have made in many different ways.”
Robert Quandahl (E84) “First, I have the privilege of working with a group of talented men and women to ensure our soldiers have the finest, quality ships to remain operationally ready. Secondly, as a veteran, I have the privilege of contributing to the continued legacy of protecting our citizens and nation’s military interest. And finally, I am a part of a shipbuilding family with ties that transcend the workplace and impact the communities in which we live.”
Mitchell L. Durant, Sr. (E07) “I am a Navy vet. I have seen ship-to-ship live combat. Been involved in freeing hostages from terrorists in the Mediterranean Sea. Pulled police actions against drug runners and pirates by South America. My time in the service taught me pride and professionalism, attention to detail, and a commitment to quality work. These principles have followed me into my work at HII. Here I get to help make the tools that the future Navy will use for years to come. It is my honor to support these men and women in any way that I can because here at HII and as a Navy vet I am first and foremost a proud American.”
Doyle Cavender (E57) “It means that I am still defending and serving my country, keeping my shipmates safe, being part of the crew and protecting my family.”
John Young (X70/X43)
