mployees Participate in Veterans Day E Activities In honor of Veterans Day, Newport News Shipbuilding and the Veterans Employee Resource Group (VERG) hosted several activities throughout the week of Nov. 7-11. On Thursday, Nov. 10, employees and VERG members gathered at the Dorothy for Community Day. Employees were encouraged to wear shirts that represented their favorite branch of service and spend 30 minutes during lunch to pick up litter along Washington and Huntington Avenues. On Friday, Nov. 11, a flag raising ceremony was held at the flag pole in front of Bldg. 14. NNS veteran employees Anthony Caudill (X75), Kevin Ritton (E82) and Officer Rachael Watts (O15) participated along with their fellow shipbuilders. VERG also hosted a Veterans Day Luncheon on Nov. 11 for employee veterans. VERG Chair Marcia Stewart-Downing (O36) and Brian Fields, vice president of Integrated Planning and Production
Control and executive sponsor of VERG, welcomed participants to the lunch, and thanked them for their service. “Newport News Shipbuilding employs 3,200 veterans – many are in this room today. On this Veterans Day, we celebrate you and thank you for your service to our country and to our company,” said Fields. Eden Jones (O53), Annie Madojemu (O56) and Jim Wallis (O36) then led a ceremony for the “Missing Man Table,” where they explained the significance of each item placed on the table. The week concluded with a flag lowering ceremony. Officer Levi Williams (O15), StacyAnne Schrier (O53) and Dave Orie (E81) particpated as Evan Meyer (E83) played taps on the trumpet. Watch a highlights video of the flag-raising ceremony as well as a video salute to veterans at NNS, both featured on MyNNS.

NNS Hosts Manufacturing Day Program Newport News Shipbuilding’s Career Pathways Program hosted Manufacturing Day on Oct.7. The annual event brings school administrators and teachers from area high schools together to learn about manufacturing and the shipyard career opportunities available. Events throughout the day consisted of a shipyard tour, demonstrations from various trades and the integrated Digital Shipbuilding (iDS) team, a visit to The Apprentice School and a panel discussion from leaders across NNS. “Manufacturing Day provides an opportunity for us to step back and appreciate the contributions that we make to our nation’s defense and recognize the significant impact we have on our economy,” said Manufacturing Day Sponsor Rob Hogan, vice president of Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management. “This event also allows us to highlight opportunities and careers in manufacturing for our future workforce.” Manufacturing Day continues to be an annual event for companies across North America to showcase manufacturing. The initiative started in 2012 with 240 manufacturers participating throughout 37 states, and has now grown to 48 states, along with Canada and Puerto Rico with a total of 35,000 annual participants. For more information about this annual event, contact Association for Manufacturing Excellence (AME) Southeast Region Director Kim Humphrey (O51) at Kim.Humphrey@att.net.

During the lunch, X11 presented the group with Fit-to-Fit T-shirts and hats to thank them for their continued support of the Fitter of the Future tooling initiative. Quality Craftsman of the Month Recognized For the past seven years, the Virginia-class Submarine (VCS) Program has recognized one craftsman each week in October as the “Quality Craftsman of the Week.” From the pool of weekly award winners throughout the month, one craftsman is selected to receive the “Quality Craftsman of the Month Award.” This year’s award was presented to Sandra Burks (X33). “Sandra has been with the company for more than 12 years and has developed into one of the top insulators in the VCS Program. Her commitment and focus in achieving first-time quality has resulted in hundreds of inspections with zero discrepancies found,” said X33 General Foreman Heinz Trulley. “Her overall performance is outstanding, and we are fortunate to have Sandra as part of the VCS team. Her willingness to teach, train and mentor the team’s new generation of shipbuilders has been instrumental in the delivery of the first fully-outfitted Auxiliary Machinery Room module for the Block IV contract, as well as the Surface Preparation and Treatment Department completing work ahead of schedule and under budget. All of these remarkable accomplishments are the result of Sandra’s and the X33 teams’ dedication to building the best submarines in the world.”
