On Nov. 20, USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) conducted its first internal phone call using the Integrated Voice Network (IVN).

Capt. Ronald Ravelo, commanding officer, Abraham Lincoln, received the call from Lincoln’s RCOH Program Manager Bruce Easterson from a separate location inside the ship. “This is one small step for the project and one large step for the project-kind,” Ravelo said, adding that it was wonderful to enter into a compartment and immediately notice the significant changes that have been accomplished.

Stretching is Part of Daily Routine for Industrial Athletes Shipbuilders in Bldg. 205 and 276 have made stretching part of their daily routine in an effort to remain safe. “Starting the day off by stretching helps everyone to wake up and to get their mind and body ready for the hard work ahead of them,” said Foreman Katy Deese. “Through participating in HealthWaves’ Industrial Athlete program, my crew now understands how critical stretching is prior to beginning work.” Deese’s crew was among the first group of shipbuilders to participate in the HealthWaves Industrial Athlete program when it began in 2012 – and the crew is still an active participant today. “The Industrial Athlete program is important
for shipbuilders working in industrial areas because it helps to reduce the effects of musculoskeletal injuries like strains and sprains,” said Injury Prevention Specialist Terry Holbert. “By educating participants on the proper way to move, bend, rotate, reach and lift correctly, we can help shipbuilders be more productive and if employees can learn how to operate effectively, they can change how their bodies respond to stress conditions, thus making them and their work area more safe.” Shipbuilder Wesley Wooten (M32) relates stretching to eating a good breakfast. “I was always taught that you start your day with a good breakfast,” he said. “We start our day off with stretching and getting our bodies in the position of doing the things that we have ... The space containing one of three nodes to operate the full system began its reconstruction back in 2012 when Lincoln first started the RCOH process. In order to install the IVN system, Newport News shipbuilders had to remove the legacy system and replace it with the latest technology. “It is nice to have the IVN system operational,” said Interior Communications Electrician 3rd Class Paul Johnson who arrived aboard Abraham Lincoln in August 2012 and witnessed the transformation of the J-Dial system to the new IVN system as it went through the process of construction and light-off. According to Easterson, having a third of the ... CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

Career Pathways Hosts Job Shadowing Opportunity for Area Students Career Pathways hosted 38 students and five teachers from Heritage High School’s Governor’s STEM Academy and An Achievable Dream High School in November for a job shadowing opportunity. While at Newport News Shipbuilding, the students and teachers spent 15 hours over three days exploring different shipbuildingrelated STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers. Mentors from computer systems technology and engineering, escorted students through their departments and other areas of the shipyard to provide a hands-on experience and present them the various experiences of shipbuilding along with careers opportunities available to them at NNS. The students and teachers wrapped up their job shadowing experience at The Apprentice School. A panel of apprentices spoke to the students and teachers about their career path and why they chose The Apprentice School. The students, faculty and staff also toured of the

... IVN system operational is another in the string of milestones Lincoln has successfully achieved since the RCOH execution phase started back in March 2013. “This is a significant milestone because it’s the first step towards bringing this major communication system to operational status,” Easterson said. “We’re very proud of the Navy, Newport News Shipbuilding and vendor cooperation that made this possible.” Along with the installation of the IVN system, the NNS team working on the project also

new Apprentice School facility. Heritage High School senior Dorian Black said, “The opportunity to see first-hand professionals take their education and experience, and collaboratively join forces to create such fine vessels was a life-changing experience.” NNS Mentor Dave Orie (E81) added, “Job shadowing affords NNS employees the opportunity to give back to the community we grew up in and hopefully impact someone’s life in a positive way.” Visit the Career Pathways website on Yardnet to learn about how to get involved in future Career Pathways opportunities. The NNS team finished the space in record time, completing the project four months ahead of schedule. “When Lincoln pulled into Newport News, the space had already been gutted during the Smart Start phase,” said Floyd Shelton, Lincoln’s RCOH construction manager. “We were ready to install the IVN system, the cables, put in new foundations and update the power systems at arrival at NNS.” Chief Interior Communications Cindy Lambert reflected on the teamwork involved to complete her space transformation. “I am very proud of the hard work done by NNS.”

ASSA Donates Proceeds to “Aid Our Veterans” More than 140 golfers participated in The Apprentice School Student Association’s (ASSA) 3rd Annual Veterans Day Golf Class on Nov. 9 at Cypress Creek Golf Club in Smithfield. The tournament raised $5,500 and all proceeds were donated to the “Aid Our Veterans” organization, a not for profit organization working to help homeless and out of work veterans of our military service. Trophies were presented to first and second place teams and a “Bad Day” award was presented to the last-place team. “We chose the ‘Aid Our Veterans’ organization because they have a passion to provide housing to the homeless veterans,” said Charlene Barrington (X06/X89), tournament organizer. “The organization is working to raise money to provide a shelter in this area to achieve this goal. ‘Aid Our veterans’ also provides assistance with utility bills, food, clothing, rent and finding employment for the unemployed veterans just to name a few. This tournament allowed us to give back to the veterans who have given to their country unselfishly. Food, fun and fellowship. A good time was had by all.”

Ads will not be accepted by phone or email. Ads will not be accepted for third-parties or businesses. Ads containing .com website URLs, real estate MLS numbers, or for any types of weapons will not be accepted. To be published, the ad form must include the employee’s name, department number and a non-work phone number. All ads will expire seven days from the original posting date. Ads must be resubmitted by employee each week. NNS Communications may limit the number of submissions per employee and reserves the right to edit or reject any submission. Employees who are found to have misrepresented themselves or any items advertised will be prohibited from publishing ads in the future. Employees submitting ads understand that the Classifieds are published for an external audience and may be seen by non-employees.
How to Submit an Ad Ads can be submitted online at nns.huntingtoningalls.com/ currents or a hard copy can be mailed via Yardmail to ATTN: Classifieds, Dept. O29, Bldg. 520-1.
