On Nov. 20, USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) conducted its first internal phone call using the Integrated Voice Network (IVN).

Capt. Ronald Ravelo, commanding officer, Abraham Lincoln, received the call from Lincoln’s RCOH Program Manager Bruce Easterson from a separate location inside the ship. “This is one small step for the project and one large step for the project-kind,” Ravelo said, adding that it was wonderful to enter into a compartment and immediately notice the significant changes that have been accomplished.

Stretching is Part of Daily Routine for Industrial Athletes Shipbuilders in Bldg. 205 and 276 have made stretching part of their daily routine in an effort to remain safe. “Starting the day off by stretching helps everyone to wake up and to get their mind and body ready for the hard work ahead of them,” said Foreman Katy Deese. “Through participating in HealthWaves’ Industrial Athlete program, my crew now understands how critical stretching is prior to beginning work.” Deese’s crew was among the first group of shipbuilders to participate in the HealthWaves Industrial Athlete program when it began in 2012 – and the crew is still an active participant today. “The Industrial Athlete program is important
for shipbuilders working in industrial areas because it helps to reduce the effects of musculoskeletal injuries like strains and sprains,” said Injury Prevention Specialist Terry Holbert. “By educating participants on the proper way to move, bend, rotate, reach and lift correctly, we can help shipbuilders be more productive and if employees can learn how to operate effectively, they can change how their bodies respond to stress conditions, thus making them and their work area more safe.” Shipbuilder Wesley Wooten (M32) relates stretching to eating a good breakfast. “I was always taught that you start your day with a good breakfast,” he said. “We start our day off with stretching and getting our bodies in the position of doing the things that we have ... The space containing one of three nodes to operate the full system began its reconstruction back in 2012 when Lincoln first started the RCOH process. In order to install the IVN system, Newport News shipbuilders had to remove the legacy system and replace it with the latest technology. “It is nice to have the IVN system operational,” said Interior Communications Electrician 3rd Class Paul Johnson who arrived aboard Abraham Lincoln in August 2012 and witnessed the transformation of the J-Dial system to the new IVN system as it went through the process of construction and light-off.
