NNS to Assist with Maintenance Work on USS Harry S. Truman

A weekly publication of Newport News Shipbuilding

The Navy has awarded a $7.9M contract to Newport News Shipbuilding for work on USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75). The aircraft carrier is currently docked at Norfolk Naval Shipyard in Portsmouth, where the repair and maintenance work will be performed. Work on CVN 75 is expected to be complete by March 2015. Truman is expected to deploy late next year.

Morgan Sindall Joins Forces with S.M. Stoller and NNN On Dec. 4, Huntington Ingalls Industries announced that construction and infrastructure company Morgan Sindall, along with The S.M. Stoller Corp. and Newport News Nuclear (NNN), both subsidiary companies of HII, have signed a long term agreement to work together to offer a combined delivery capability to the United Kingdom (UK) nuclear market. Given UK government investment in the nuclear industry, this agreement will enable these three companies to bring innovative processes and systems to market and collaboratively target nuclear new build and decommissioning projects across the UK. It will achieve this by using the complementary strengths of each organization: Stoller and

NNN bring extensive experience of nuclear waste handling and programme controls from managing the majority of licensed nuclear sites within the U.S., whilst Morgan Sindall brings design, construction and project management delivery capability within the UK nuclear market. Simon Smith, managing director of Utility Services at Morgan Sindall, said, “The signing of this agreement demonstrates our commitment to significantly expand our UK nuclear presence. We have a clear understanding of the UK’s future nuclear requirements and a proven construction and infrastructure capability within this sector. Through our collaboration with Stoller and NNN we are further... CONTINUED ON PAGE 2

X33 Shipbuilders Recognized for Process Improvements Surface Preparation and Treatment (SP&T) Trades Director Jim Coppa challenged his shipbuilders to focus on making improvements to current work processes throughout the year by submitting Opportunity for Improvements (OFIs) to the Process Excellence Department’s (O07) value stream leader. “We count on craftsmen working on the deckplate to let us know of new ideas they have or any suggestions they think of that might improve processes,” said Coppa. “They are the ones who work closest to the processes, so they are the best people to

recommend improvements.” In November, Coppa congratulated X33 craftsmen for improving their participation in the OFI program by more than 300 percent. Coppa also recognized Foreman Steve Dent and his X33C crew for submitting the highest number of valid OFIs in 2014. “One of the biggest improvements the crew made this year was completing the fill and drain process for the bilge keel and rudder in record time,” said Coppa. “Foreman Dave Person and his...

Stoller President Nick Lombardo said, “We are eager to share our nuclear remediation and project planning and execution core competencies with a strong partner in the UK. Our collaboration with Morgan Sindall will allow us to provide capabilities and experience we have developed over decades to significant nuclear projects and services in the UK nuclear market. We look forward to a long and mutually successful relationship with Morgan Sindall.”

In his new position, Amin will oversee the shipyard’s strategic direction and will have dayto-day leadership over all information systems at Newport News and the HII corporate office. Amin will assume his new position Dec. 15 and transition into the job with the help of Leni Kaufman, who will retire from the position on Dec. 31 after 35 years of service that began with Northrop Grumman. “Although Leni did not begin her career with NNS, she has demonstrated through her dedicated leadership, enthusiasm and commitment to the shipyard that she is a true shipbuilder in every way,” said NNS President Matt Mulherin. “We look forward to working with Bharat and putting his extensive engineering and IT experience to work in this very important role.”

AMSEC Division Appraised at Level 3 Maturity in CMMI Process Improvement On Dec. 1, AMSEC announced that its Technology Solutions division has been appraised at level 3 of the CMMI Institute’s Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI) program. CMMI is a process improvement training and appraisal program and service administered and marketed by Carnegie Mellon University and the CMMI Institute. The appraisal was performed by Williamsburg Process Solutions, a third-party auditor specializing in appraisal and process improvement. “This achievement validates our commitment to execute to rigorous standards that provide quality and timely software solutions to our existing and new customers,” said Mary White, AMSEC’s director of Logistics, Engineering, Technology and Training Solutions. “It reinforces AMSEC’s motto: ‘Quality People Providing Quality Service.’” AMSEC is implementing the CMMI for Development (CMMI-DEV) model, which provides guidance to improve the effectiveness, efficiency and quality of product development work. According to the CMMI Institute, the benefits experienced by organizations using CMMI-DEV in their process improvement programs include improved customer satisfaction, increased quality and more accurate schedules. An appraisal at maturity level 3 indicates the organization is performing at a “defined” level. At this level, processes are well characterized and understood and are described in standards, procedures, tools, and methods. The organization’s set of standard processes, which is the basis for maturity level 3, is established and improved over time.

A Piece of USS Texas Comes Home On Dec. 1, members of the Battleship Texas Foundation presented Newport News Shipbuilding with a piece of USS Texas (BB 35), celebrating 100 years since the ship’s commissioning. NNS President Matt Mulherin received the commemorative gift on behalf of the shipyard. Made of original riveted, salvaged steel from the old battleship, the piece measures 16” by 16” and weighs 29 pounds. Andy Smith, the ship manager, was one of those presenting the steel plate. “Today was all about giving a piece of this ship back to the shipyard,” said Smith. “The Newport News shipbuilders here in 1912 to 1914 built a high-quality ship, and we feel strongly that you should recognize the people who make things possible. It’s only fitting that this piece of steel comes back to the place where the ship was built. It’s almost like a homecoming.” USS Texas is one of six remaining ships to have served in both world wars. In World War II, she shelled Axis-held beaches in Normandy before being transferred to the Pacific Theater where she would support the Battles of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. She holds the distinction of being the first U.S. battleship to mount anti-aircraft guns and the first U.S. battleship to launch an aircraft. Today, she is the only remaining dreadnought battleship in the world, a testament to the craftsmanship of her shipbuilders. Texas was decommissioned in 1948, having earned a total of five battle stars for her service in World War II. The battleship is now a U.S. National Historic Landmark in La Porte, Texas.

NOTICE: Test of Surry Power Station’s Emergency Alert Sirens State and local officials will test the emergency alert siren system around the Surry Power Station Wednesday, Dec. 10, at approximately 11:10 a.m. A steady three-minute tone will be sounded by 71 sirens in Williamsburg, Newport News and the counties of Surry, James City, York and Isle of Wight. The sirens are located within a 10-mile radius of the plant. Siren tests for Surry Power Station consist

of a single three-minute tone and take place quarterly on the second Wednesdays of March, June, September and December. The siren notification signifying an actual emergency at Surry Power Station consists of four separate three-minute activations, each separated by a one-minute silent interval. Total elapsed time for actual emergency notification is 15 minutes. When sirens sound, people

should listen to a local radio or TV station that is broadcasting emergency information. Additional information about the siren system and emergency notification can be found in the annual Surry Power Station emergency information calendar mailed to households in the region. The next test of the Surry siren system will be Wednesday, March 11, 2015
