Kennedy Tree Spreads Holiday Cheer in North Yard Shipbuilders working on the construction of aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy (CVN 79) spread cheer on the Final Assembly Platen (FAP) in the weeks leading to shipyard shutdown with a safety tree. According to CVN 79 Construction Superintendent Lee Murphy, crews came up with the idea to build a tree to hang “S” and “J” hooks, on as well as other supplies, that would typically be placed in barrels when not in use. “We have a bunch of ‘line trees’ in our work area already for line management and to keep lines off the ground, so, coming up with a tree to hang other supplies on came natural to us,” said Samuel Brandon (X31). “Having these items hung on a tree is not only easier for us to get to, it’s also safer because we reduce potential trip hazards and it saves us time by having our supplies near us when we need them.” Welder Dante Johnson (X18) and Fitter Lee Morton (X11) constructed the tree and set it up following the Thanksgiving holiday. “Once the tree was built, we began using it,” said Morton. “But with the holidays in full swing, we thought it would also be neat to make the tree festive by hanging lights and other ornaments on the tree as well.” Shipfitter Tyrone Armstrong (X11) said that once the crew put a few decorations on, they invited other trades to hang an ornament representative of their trade on the tree as well. “We wanted everyone in the shipyard family to be represented,” Armstrong said. Some of the items on the tree include tape, a bucket, steel toe boots and a hard hat with a sticker from every trade. CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

Shipbuilders Adopt Local Families for Thanksgiving As part of the SHIPs Network Adopt-a-Family program, shipbuilders working on Platens 20 and 21, and shipbuilders in the SPF shop in Bay 2 sponsored a local family for Thanksgiving. Together, the shipbuilders collected more than 375 food items and more than $1,000 in cash.

WiSE Sponsors More than 50 Children for the Holidays This year, Women in Shipbuilding Enterprise (WiSE) sponsored more than 50 Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) children, exceeding the 43 local children they helped in 2013. Newport News CASA volunteers work with local abused and neglected children who are under the court’s supervision.
“This family has struggled down a tough road,” said Superintendent Mark Weaver. “It is amazing, but not surprising, that this team came together to give a local family a holiday they will never forget. This team’s compassion and generosity toward others is beyond words. They have proven time and time again that they are not only great shipbuilders, but great people. They are tougher than poverty, tougher than hunger, tougher than hopelessness and tougher than steel.” This is just one of the 40 families SHIPs Network sponsored this year.
The children, ages five months to 17 years old, often have nothing to call their own as they are moved from place to place. Heather Rugnetta (E86PE), WiSE Community Service and Outreach director, and the WiSE Board of Directors would like to extend a big “Thank You” to the generosity of Becky Webster (O51), who was instrumental in working with CASA, along with the WiSE membership, the Employees Resource Groups, and other supporters throughout the shipyard.
ISCVN Donates Tournament Proceeds to USO The In-Service Aircraft Carrier (ISCVN) program presented a $5,000 check to benefit the USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia earlier this month. Proceeds were donated from this year’s 11th annual Aircraft Carrier Invitational Golf Tournament at Ford’s Colony in October. Propeller Club Sponsors First Tee of the Virginia Peninsula The Propeller Club donated $500 to the First Tee of the Virginia Peninsula organization on Nov. 11. The not-for-profit organization seeks to build character and promote healthy choices in youth. The money donated was from proceeds collected during the Propeller Club Invitational in August.

E60 Holds “Helping Hands” Event to Assist Local Families As part of the continuing effort to build camaraderie and teamwork within the division, the E60’s Engagement Team organized the “Holiday Helping Hands” event as part of its 2014 Director’s Cup competition. Through the City of Newport News’s “Adopt-A-Family for Thanksgiving” program, E60’s Engagement Champions, Chas Johnson (E62) and Michelle Pope (E63), adopted one family for each of the four departments in E60. They created identical shopping lists, including Thanksgiving specific food items, regular grocery items and toiletries. The goal was to not only help these families have a happy Thanksgiving but to help them have a solid start to the 2014 holiday season. Separate from the Director’s Cup event, a few people in the division decided to adopt families

on their own for the holiday. The E61 Waterfront Liaison group, organized by John Kranz (E61), sponsored three additional families and Glenn Neklason (E63) sponsored two additional families to make nine families in total sponsored by E60 this year.

“I think this effort reflects the high morale of the Construction/Production team on the FAP,” said Mike Butler, program director for CVN 79 Construction. “We are two years into production and are consistently operating at or under budget. This is the result of excellent performance from our team and from the value-stream organizations in front of us.”
Newport News Shipbuilding holiday shutdown begins Dec. 24. Normal operations will cease after the completion of second shift on Dec. 23. Normal operations will resume with shifts beginning at 11 p.m. on Jan. 4. Because of the nature of our business, it will be necessary for some shipbuilders to work during the holiday shutdown. Supervision will notify employees of any such arrangements. View the Distribution A memos regarding holiday shutdown schedule and how to record time during shutdown on Yardnet. Facilities encourages all shipbuilders to close doors and windows and unplug all unnecessary electrical equipment prior to leaving for shutdown, including: • Coffee pots
• Space heaters
• Appliances
• Fans
The CVN 79 Program plans to build additional trees to hang supplies on in the coming months.
• Computers
• Lighting
Shipbuilders Decorate Menchville House
Shipbuilders who must work during shutdown should turn everything off before leaving work each day. In addition, window air conditioning (AC) units with heating capability should only be adjusted to their minimum setting. Other window AC units should be turned off completely.
As a teambuilding activity, M40 shipbuilders helped hang holiday decorations at the Menchville House, an emergency housing facility for homeless families, located in Newport News. “Volunteering at the Menchville House was a very rewarding experience,” said Dennis Parker (M32). “It gave our team the opportunity to grow in our relationships with each other outside of work and to help an organization at the same time.” Dan Rideout added, “Although it was only putting up decorations, we made a positive impact.” Tommy Quitko said that it felt good to help others in the community. “Just to see the smiles on their faces made our time at the house worth it,” he said. The Menchville House was appreciative of the assistance and wrote a letter to the team. “Donating your time to transform a shelter into a ‘home’ filled with the wonder of Christmas is a beautiful way to lift the spirits of the families here who are faced with so many struggles. Thank you for helping them move from hurt to hope.” General Foreman Jason Roach hangs decorations at the Menchville House.
DO NOT turn the heat off completely. Most building HVAC automated control systems will be set as “unoccupied” by midnight on Dec. 23. If working during shutdown and your building requires additional heat, contact the Service Desk at 688-9888. Provide your name, department, building and the hours that you will be working. Heat will be provided only per specific request and timeframe. Do not secure utility services to facilities during shutdown such as water, welding gases, compressed air, etc. If a utility service needs to be secured, contact David Crews (O46) at 810-3140. Contact Mike Romanelli (O46) at 688-0230 for questions and concerns.
