New Class of SSBN Named for District of Columbia During a ceremony held Dec. 14 at D.C. City Hall, Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus formally announced the first ship of the new fleet of ballistic missile submarines (SSBN), formerly known as the Ohio-class replacement, will be named USS Columbia (SSBN 826) in honor of the district. Newport News Shipbuilding is partnering with General Dynamics Electric Boat (EB) to build the Columbia Class. The 561-foot-long submarines will include a new life-of-ship reactor, an electric drive propulsion system and field 16 Trident II D5 ballistic missiles. Building on the success of the Virginia-class submarine program, NNS and EB will build 12 Columbia-class submarines between 2021 and 2039 with EB as the prime contractor. NNS will participate in the design and will manufacture major Columbia-class assemblies and modules, including the bow, stern, auxiliary machinery room, superstructure and weapons modules. Ballistic missile submarines are critical, stabilizing and efficient elements of the U.S. nuclear deterrence and assurance policy, carrying the majority of deployed U.S. nuclear warheads. Columbia-class SSBNs incorporate advanced technology and will provide the most survivable leg of the Nation’s strategic triad. Visit nns.huntingtoningalls.com/columbia for additional information.

2017 L.A.W. School Courses Now Open Newport News Shipbuilding’s Management Development Center continues to offer a series of after-work professional development courses for employees. “Learning After the Whistle,” or L.A.W. School is a program offered by the center to employees as an opportunity to grow both personally and professionally. Currently, all employees are eligible to enroll in 2017 courses.
JMAF Construction to Impact North Yard Parking Construction of the new state-of-the-art Joint Manufacturing Assembly Facility (JMAF) located at the northern end of the shipyard is currently underway. The first phases of the facility are scheduled to open in 2017 and will feature multiple worksites, advanced technology, automated equipment, heavyweight cranes, large transportation doors and specialty paint bays to support the construction of aircraft carriers and submarines. “When construction of this facility first began in June 2015, no loss of employee parking was expected,” said Lucas Hicks, director of Facilities and Real Estate. “However, as the design of this facility has continued to mature, the footprint necessary to meet the increased aircraft carrier and submarine work has grown from 19 to 26 acres.” As a result, beginning Dec. 28, approximately 396 spots in the North Yard will be lost to accommodate JMAF construction (a map detailing the affected areas is pictured above). As the construction progresses over the next four years, the Facilities and Real Estate team will continue to evaluate the parking impact and will look at ways to add spaces to offset parking spots being lost as a result of this facility’s construction. “We know that parking continues to be an issue for our employees, and we apologize for this inconvenience,” said Hicks. Employees affected by this parking change are encouraged to park at the following locations: •
North Hidens (approximately 360 spaces were recently added to the south side parking lot located off Warwick Blvd.)
•
Top Decks of Bldg. 902 and Bldg. 903 parking garages
These locations are serviced by the company’s Park-and-Ride Shuttle Service, which offers free rides to and from the North Yard and to and from the Bldg. 903 Parking Garage and 31st Street Bus Stop. Additional information regarding loss of parking will be communicated in future editions of Currents. For questions regarding these changes, contact Dan Bieker (X53) at 688-5292.
2017 courses are now open for registration. For additional course information, visit the L.A.W. website on MyNNS. To register, visit Learning Exchange (LX) and perform an advanced search for “LAW.” All L.A.W. courses are offered in Bldg. 903 on the 7th floor. Required books and materials are also provided, so there is no cost for employees to attend. As a reminder, attendance is on each employee’s own time and a time charge is not provided. For questions about this program, contact Michelle Avery (O25) at 380-3068 or Nancy Kramer (O25) at 688-2761.
MyTime – Did You Know? New salaried employees, interns and co-op employees will receive access to MyTime and NNSCORP, the company’s online network, as part of the new hire orientation process. All other employees who require access to MyTime to process their personal time will need to submit a Computer User Access System (CUAS) form NN3912 directly to Payroll. Instructions to request MyTime access for all other purposes and roles can be found on the Payroll website. For additional information on timekeeping, visit the Timekeeping Central website on MyNNS.
Security Incidents Reported on 34th Street Two security incidents involving Newport News Shipbuilding employees were reported along 34th Street last week. The first incident took place at the intersection of Huntington Ave. and the second at Washington Ave. Both incidents involved similar situations of a male suspect approaching an employee’s vehicle while stopped at a red light. In one case, the suspect attempted to open the passenger-side door of the vehicle, and in the second case, the suspect threw a brick at the driver’s window. NNS Security would like to remind all employees to be aware of their surroundings at all times. Employees who are the victim of a crime or those who witness suspicious activity should report it immediately to 911 or NNS’ Security Command Center at *911 or (757) 380-2222.

In-Service Aircraft Carrier Division Presents Quality Awards to Shipbuilders During the month of October, Newport News Shipbuilding’s In-Service Aircraft Carrier (ISCVN) Division recognized shipbuilders who demonstrated the highest level of commitment to first-time quality in their daily work. The ISCVN Construction and Production leadership team selected Chris Denson (X42) as the overall monthly award recipient for October. Denson was assigned to work the discharge storage air filters on board the USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) and was concerned about the vent location of the loop seal. After bringing his concerns to his foreman, it was discovered that the Technical Work Document (TWD) for the product was incorrect and identified the wrong vent location. The TWD was corrected to reflect the proper vent location, preventing a possible radiological spill. The division would also like to congratulate other weekly winners for October: Cheri Blount (X33), Christopher Laws (X33), Amen Hotep (X33), Cheree Tucker (X33), Alonzo Askew (X33), Tiarra Thomas (X33), Monica Chamberliss (X33) and Robert Kennedy (X70). Blount and Laws recently worked on a 12” main steam valve on the USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) in San Diego, CA. They both displayed a high level of first-time quality, while installing insulation on the valve and piping, even earning the attention of shipbuilders from another shipyard. The team of Hotep, Tucker, Askew, Thomas and Chamberliss has been named “The Closers” due to their consistency in completing assignments with zero quality issues on CVN 72. They’ve even challenged their foreman to check behind them with a flashlight and a mirror, and no issues have been discovered. Each shipbuilder has taken pride in his/her job and understands the importance of inspecting their jobs from start to finish. Robert Kennedy (X70), who was inspecting linen closets on CVN 72, questioned light switches being installed in the wrong location. After researching the drawings, he determined that the switches were in fact installed incorrectly and immediately reported the finding to his immediate supervisor. Regardless of potential negative impact on cost and schedule to correct the switches, Kennedy upheld the company’s standard for quality and ethics. Pictured from (L to R): Chris Miner, vice president of In-Service Aircraft Carriers, Chris Denson (X42) and Foreman Scott Tanner (X79); General Foreman Mark Wilson (X79), Alonzo Askew (X33), Amen Hotep (X33), Monica Chamberliss( X33), Tiarra Thomas (X33) and Chris Miner, vice president of In-Service Aircraft Carriers; Chris Miner, vice president of In-Service Aircraft Carriers, Robert Kennedy (X70), X70 Construction Superintendent David White and X70 Director Dave Fletcher.

AROUND THE YARD Shutdown Reminders As a reminder, before leaving for shutdown, Facilities encourages all employees to close doors and windows and unplug all unnecessary electrical equipment, such as: •
Space heaters
•
Coffee pots
•
Fans
•
Appliances
•
Lighting
•
Computers
Employees who must work during shutdown should turn everything off before leaving work each day. In addition, window air conditioning units with heating capability should only be adjusted to their minimum setting. Other window AC units should be completely turned off.
Notice to Supervisors Regarding Time Approval Deadlines On Dec. 14, Payroll announced time approval deadlines for processing. To ensure that all labor gets appropriately distributed to the final cost objectives in 2016, all time through Dec. 31, 2016 must be entered and approved by 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, Jan. 1, 2017. Read the Distribution A Memo on MyNNS.
Do not turn the heat completely off. Most building HVAC automated control systems will be set as “unoccupied” by midnight on Dec. 23. If your building requires additional heat during shutdown, call the Service Desk at 688-9888. Provide your name, department, building and the hours that you will be working. Heat will be provided only by requests with specific timeframes.
Shipbuilder Holiday Greetings: Watch Video on MyNNS
Do not secure utility services, such as water, welding gases, compressed air, etc. to facilities during shutdown. Do not depressurize permanently installed gas systems such as oxygen, nitrogen, propane, etc. inside buildings or other areas served by these systems. Facilities has started supplying buildings with yellow/black ice melt bins, scoops and an initial supply of salt. Each yellow ice melt bin provides information to reorder additional salt, and building/facility owners are responsible for ensuring that an adequate salt supply is on hand prior to shutdown. For questions regarding this notification, contact Mike Romanelli (O46) at 688-0230.

Ethics in Action: Holiday Edition Last week, Warren Newton (O45) was working on a bus when his wallet fell out of his pocket. There was a substantial amount of money in the wallet because he planned to go Christmas shopping later that evening. Newton notified the security team who were unable to locate the valuable item. That same afternoon, he received a phone call from an unavailable number. The person on the other line advised him that he had his wallet and could meet him in the yard around 4 p.m. Warren was of course thrilled to receive such great news. When he asked the gentleman for his name, the man simply replied, “Kris.” Newton was thrilled to get his wallet back with all of the money, credit cards and personal documents untouched. He offered the gentleman $100 for finding his wallet, but he would not accept the money. When the man walked away, Newton asked for his last name. The guy chuckled and said, “It’s Kringle.”
