Shipbuilders and Sailors Honor Veterans with Holiday Wreaths On Dec. 11, Newport News shipbuilders paused from their holiday preparations to honor fallen veterans at the Hampton National Cemetery. NNS volunteers joined active service men and women, military families, Boy Scouts, high school students, fraternal organizations and other Hampton Roads civic groups prepare for the National Wreaths Across America Remembrance Ceremony. Hours before the noon-time event, volunteers arrived at the cemetery to unwrap and fluff wreaths and red bows to place at 11,000 headstones. NNS’ Veterans Employee Resource Group (VERG) organized the shipyard’s participation in the event. “Volunteering with Wreaths Across America is a wonderful way to honor those who protected our freedom through service and sacrifice,” said Beth Hoss (E89) VERG director of Community Relations. “WAA promises to remember the fallen, honor those who serve and their families, and also teach our children the value of freedom.”
The event’s theme “Every Stone Has a Story” was true for NNS employees Audrey Davis and Gina Chew-Holman. After the wreaths were staged and ready for the ceremony, the two volunteers visited the final resting place for their relatives. Davis said, ”It was an honor and privilege to support Wreaths Across America with VERG, not only in remembrance of all the fallen soldiers and their families, but also to place a wreath and a poinsettia on the grave of my in-laws TSGT Howard Gibson and his wife Emma Jane Gibson. “ Chew-Holman visited her great-uncle’s grave the first time since attending the World War II veteran’s internment as a child. “Being here today is as emotional and memorable as it was when I was a little girl,” Chew-Holman said. “I was proud to represent my family and support Wreaths Across America.” CONTINUED ON PG 2

WiSE Assist Local Children Through “Secret Santa” Gift Giving Efforts This year, Women in Shipbuilding Enterprise (WiSE) sponsored more than 80 Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) children, exceeding the 36 children they assisted in 2014. Newport News CASA volunteers work with local abused and neglected children who are under the court’s supervision. The children, ages 5 months to 17 years old, often have nothing to call their own as they are moved from place to place. This year’s donations included books, clothes, toys and seven bicycles. “I am extremely moved by the generosity of our shipbuilders this year, especially during these tough times of uncertainty,” said Becky Webster (O51). “The response has been overwhelming and we were able to sponsor 86 children total – a new record!” Heather Smith (X75) was also enlighted by the amount of giving this year. “It was so heartwarming to see the amount of employees reaching out to our youth this holiday season

and giving back,” she said. “This opportunity offers hope and a sense of belonging to these children that would have gone without Christmas. Thank you to all who participated in making this holiday season so special for so many. Not only do we build great ships, we also build great people.” Visit the WiSE Yardnet website for information on how you can get involved in upcoming events.
PRTO Group Sponsors Third Annual Angel Tree Donation Newport New Shipbuilding’s Process and Tools (PRTO) group continues to honor the spirit of the holidays by participating in an Angel Tree donation to benefit area children in Hampton Roads. Each E08 and X57 manager, along with their teams, worked with the Newport News Department of Social Services (DSS) to provide all items on the “wish list” of six children between the ages of 11 and 14 months old. All gift bags were filled and gifts were wrapped prior to delivery. The donations will be delivered to DSS by Dec. 25. The PRTO Leadership Team. USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) and PCU Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) sailors and officers were among the active service men and women who laid wreaths at the headstones. As an event sponsor, PCU Gerald R. Ford’s ceremonial duties also included color guard presentation of the colors, singing of the national anthem by the CVN 78 choir, delivery of the invocation and mistress of ceremonies. Apprentices Volunteer at Christmas Town Dash Several apprentices volunteered their time to assist with Busch Garden’s annual Christmas Town Dash on Dec. 6. The 8K fitness event supports the Marines Toys for Tots. “The event was extremely fun with runners of all ages enjoying themselves and the company of the other runners,” said X31 Apprentice Aleshia Jackson. “Marines and volunteers handed metals to the finishers at the finish line. It was an honor to stand with the Marines and give the metals to the runners. They really brought something special to the event with actions that were extremely heartfelt such as when two Marines ran 100 yards in their official Blue Dress uniforms to meet a young disabled man and ran with him across the finish line.”

LX Upgrade is Coming Soon

An upgrade to Newport News Shipbuilding’s learning management system, the Learning Exchange (LX), is coming soon. Below are important dates regarding the upgrade:
HII Washington DC GCR Office HII maintains a small extension of its corporate office in Washington D.C. The HII Government and Customer Relations (GCR) Office is the one-stop point of contact with our D.C. -based customers in the Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, other Federal offices, and the United States Congress. The office is responsible for ensuring that HII always speaks with one voice when interacting across a diverse landscape of decison makers in Washington, DC. While direct interaction with Federal elected officials in support of HII priorities is stringently coordinated and under the control of HII’s GCR, CP A7 encourages employees to vote, contribute financially to the party or candidate of one’s choice, serve in civic bodies, and campaign and hold office at local, state and national levels. These rights are seen as important civic responsibilities. However, employees or officers at management Band 4 or higher must obtain prior approval when seeking to serve on a governmental board or political commission. This requirement is designed to ensure that no conflict of interest or perceived conflict of interest results from such activities. Requirements for roles of this nature are set forth in corporate procedure, CO H206, External Board Memberships. Employees engaging in personal political activity are expected and required to do so on their own time and not on company property and are prohibited from using company resources, except where allowed by law, in support of their personal political activities. Employees with questions about the scope of the GCR, the corporate policies and procedures related to federal or state political activities, or their personal political activities as they may relate to HII should seek the advice of their manager, Human Resources, Law Department, HII’s GCR or Ethics Office.
