Save Time

ot only can shopping local help keep your community vibrant and ensure more varied shopping options for the future, but, it can also save you time.

CONSIDER THE LOCAL OPTIONS BEFORE HEADING OUT OF TOWN Each community is different, but finding out what’s down the road can certainly help save you some time. From a corner hardware store to a boutique in downtown, local shopping options can often help fill the gap that could be pushing you to drive outside your community to shop. Perhaps the item you’re looking for at a big box store in another town could be found locally? Even if it costs a few dollars more, you’d almost certainly make up that difference in gas and time once it all evens out. Taking the time to learn a bit more about the business

TRAVEL TIME INCREASING As an article in U.S. News and World Report notes, you must account for energy costs associated with shopping at major retail complexes or big box stores. Jeff Milchen, cofounder and outreach director at the American Independent Business Alliance, noted Americans have been “increasing our driving significantly over the past several decades, and it’s due almost entirely to shopping. Plus, time is money.”

You might be able to get most of your shopping done at a specific big box store in a neighboring city, but look into how much of that you could get done in your own hometown. Even if it involves a few extra stops, you could still cut down your driving time quite a bit. Plus, that

SHOP LOCAL | LOCAL IMPACT

S

Save Community hopping local can help retain jobs and keep local businesses open. It’s also an investment. Without community support, the local business landscape could be drastically altered — and smaller — in the decades to come.

A Civic Economics study analyzed data from 15 independent retailers and seven independent restaurants in the Salt Lake City area, and compared their local economic impact with four national retail chains and three national restaurant chains. The study found that local retailers return a total of 52 percent of their revenue to the local economy, compared to just 14 percent for the national chain retailers. Similarly, local restaurants recirculate an average of 79 percent of their revenue locally, compared to 30 percent for chain eateries. Why the drastic difference? The report notes independent businesses spend more on local labor, goods procured locally for resale and services from local providers. This means a much larger share of the money spent at a locally owned store stays in the local economy, supporting a variety of other businesses and jobs.

any in Lincoln County are unaware that the Bateman Funeral Home is family owned and operated and not part of a large, out-of-state corporate entity. Brian Norris, of Newport, OR and David Schroeder, an Oregon Coast native, are the owners of Bateman Newport, LLC which includes Bateman Funeral Home (Newport), Pacific View Memorial Chapel (Lincoln City) and Affordable Burial & Cremation (Newport and Lincoln City). Brian Norris is the Managing Partner and lives in Newport with his family. Brian is involved in the community as President of the Yaquina Toastmaster’s Club, a member of the American Legion, Lincoln County Historical Society, involved with the City of Newport Parks and Recreation Committee and is a member of the board of directors for the Oregon Funeral Director’s Association. His wife, Donna, is a teacher at Newport High School and Brian’s youngest daughter, Lauralee, will graduate this fall from OCCC with her associates degree and is also taking classes online pursing her bachelor’s degree from OSU. Bateman Newport, LLC employs 5 full time, 2 part-time apprentices and 11 local on-call employees. They are a full service funeral home, crematory and cemetery group which means that they handle everything locally…nothing is outsourced. “Being family owned means greater flexibility in how we handle arrangements as well as pricing and quality” Norris said. The Bateman group also provides prearrangement services where a person can meet with a staff member and prepay for their future services and lock in today’s rates. Brian and Dave continue the Bateman family legacy of giving back to the community as a 53-year member of the Newport Chamber of Commerce as well as a life time Booster for Newport High School. Starting in 2015, Bateman Funeral Home has awarded seven scholarships to local seniors in Lincoln County to pursue higher education as well as participated in many other sponsorships, fundraisers and charities in the community. Just six miles east of Newport lies a thirdgeneration gem of a store serving a fifty-mile radius of customers, many of whom have been relying on the shop’s products and services for several generations themselves. Toledo Feed & Seed, Inc. was purchased by Elmer and Peg Price in 1953 and operated by them until 1975 when their daughter, Toni, and her husband, Roger Hockema bought it from them. While Roger retired in 2000, Toni has “kept on goin’~’ and has been joined by their son, Dustin (Dusty) Hockema, who took over managing the store’s

operations in 2009. “Our friendly service and product knowledge are what set us apart from competitors,” says Toni. Bearing this out is the extensive, well-established customer base that continues to grow and grow via word of mouth, despite the rural, milltown location of the store. Toledo Feed & Seed serves customers from Newport to Yachats to Lincoln City, supplying them with goods such as: livestock and pet food, veterinary supplies (such as vaccines, wormers, etc.), organic fertilizers, territorial vegetable and flower ·seeds, Carhartt

clothing, Red Wing, Danner and Georgia work boots (including Romeos!). Also farm fencing, gates, etc. Grateful .to the community that has helped them to thrive and grow over these many years, Toledo Feed & Seed likes to give back whenever they can. Not favoring anyone particular school or charity, they enjoy contributing wherever they are able to do the most good at the time by doing things such as donating various products such as raffle items, contributing to local charities and causes, and so forth. While they have been members of the Toledo Chamber of

Commerce for many years, they have longed to become more invlved as the demands of the storehave allowed them to do so. Toni and Dusty express their heartfelt thanks to the customers who have been so loyal to them over the years, they look forward to continuing to build local relationships as they move into 2018. In order to experience first-hand the friendly, family-owned and operated services of Toledo Feed and Seed, Inc., simply drop by the store at 334 W.
