Center or by paying current drop-in fee Instructor: Shannon Rackowski Zumba, the Latin-based dance and exercise phenomena has taken its moves to the water. Like its land counterpart, Aqua Zumba is fused with all the great Latin beats and sounds, and is pinched with flavors of hip-hop, country, rock, soul, and other ethnic music. Zumba in the water takes on a whole new environment: tempo, range of motion, center of gravity, body weight (10%), and of course, the water’s protective quality with less impact to joints or injuries of an individual. Aqua Zumba will be taught by Shannon Rackowski who has more than 25 years experience in the fitness industry.

Newport Swim Team

The Newport Swim Team is an independent, progressive Swim Club and is accepting applications for swimmers ages six years and older who are able to swim 25 yards crawl (freestyle) with side breathing, 25 yards backstroke, and are deep-water safe. Practice groups for a variety of skill levels are available and are scheduled from 3:15 – 5:30 p.m. weekdays. Beginning swimmers practice three times per week for one hour. Placement depends on age, skill level, and staff recommendation. Swimming is a lifetime activity that allows year-round physical training, builds confidence, self-discipline, self-esteem and strong bodies. Contact Stephanie Simpson at 541 270-3263 for further information.

Open Gym

A schedule of gym availability is posted on calendars at the control desk of the Recreation Center. Much thought has been put into making the gyms available to all ages for a variety of activities. If you feel you have a group or sport that is not represented, see a staff member and let your wishes be known. You may call during building open hours to check on the schedules. Schedules are subject to change, but every effort will be made to adjust the schedules well in advance so that notice can be given to frequent users.

Name: Tim Anderson Class Instructor for: Tae Kwon Do The Kokido School of Tae Kwon Do offers a non-violent, non-contact approach to the world of martial arts. The Kokido School was founded in 1987 by A.J. Buehler, a second-degree black belt. Mr. Buehler taught through the Newport Parks and Recreation Department at the Naterlin Center until 1998 when demands on his time prevented him from keeping the Newport school open. Mr. Buehler turned the school over to his top student, Hugh Swartout, who also operated a school in Waldport and continues to coordinate martial arts tournaments and competitions throughout Oregon. Under Mr. Swartout’s and Mr. Buehler’s guidance, first-degree black belt Tim Anderson has operated the Kokido School of Tae Kwon Do in Newport since September of 2000. Kokido Tae Kwon Do emphasizes self-control and self-discipline, thus promoting confidence and a positive self-image.
