Secrets of Shipwrecks
S
ecrets of Shipwrecks is a historic and participatory exhibit that captures the spirit of archaeological adventure. This is not about discovering sunken cities of gold or pirate’s booty. It is about playing Indiana Jones for the day, embarking on a quest to learn about the past, understand the present, and glimpse the future. Shipwreck explorers are called underwater archaeologists, and for good reason. Part astronaut, part archaeologist, and part marine biologist, their submerged research sites are void of breathable air, often under intense water pressure and utterly inhospitable to humans. These investigators must rely on cutting edge science and technology to excavate the forgotten ruins of shipwrecks to uncover clues to an earlier way of life. The four-gallery underwater wonderland takes visitors on a journey through representations of a life-sized shipwreck, archaeological digs and the artificial reefs that shipwrecks create around the world. Replicas of real artifacts discovered in historic shipwrecks from the Red Sea to the Caribbean will tumble seamlessly from mural, to exhibit tank, to gallery floor.

Inside a Shi pw reck A life-size shipwreck replica filled with live coral reefs and colorful tropical fishes found in the Caribbean Sea and Pacific Ocean greets visitors as they enter the exhibit, setting the stage for the epic underwater experience that follows. The RMS Rhone comes to life through portals that reveal a tropical coral reef. Soft corals, coral morphs and stony corals large and small provide habitat for bright blue-eyed longspine cardinalfish, boring clams, and clownfish. Natural sun and moon cycles mimic the corals’ natural environment, giving observant visitors a chance to glimpse at coral polyps’ tentacles waving in the currents for food, or the growth of a reef in action when the corals spawn with each lunar cycle.

Underwater Archaeo logy’s Too ls & Techniques This gallery explores the tools and techniques of marine archaeology. Interactive airlift retrieval systems and water jets let visitors play with the tools of this scientific trade. An archaeological dig springs from murals into three dimensions on the exhibit floor. Tanks teeming with tropical marine life are punctuated by replicas of real artifacts that were discovered in the Caribbean and Red Seas. Atlantic tarpon are best known in the United States as a popular gamefish among anglers on the Gulf Coast. They are fast swimmers that use their cavernous mouths to gulp down their prey whole. Tarpon grow slowly and do not reach reproductive maturity until they are at least six years old. They can live over 50 years and reach an impressive size – up to eight feet long and over 350 pounds during that time.

Shi pw reck & Arti fact Conservation Visitors will learn how archaeologists conserve and restore sunken artifacts to unveil the stories they have to tell about human history. Interactive displays include representations of x-rays revealing the artifacts hidden inside concretions. A fresh water exhibit highlighting the shipwrecks and life in Lake Huron tell the story of National Marine Sactuaries, which are used to preserve wrecks, come to life. Guests will be able to join the exhibit in this gallery’s centerpiece, a crawl through tank where a green moray eel that measures over six feet long from nose to tail lurks among the wreckage

Secrets of Shipwrecks
Oregon’s Sun ken Shi ps Visitors’ journey will close with a look at their own backyard. Artifacts including a ship’s bell and beeswax, and mapping activities will chart the history of Oregon’s historic shipwrecks. Replicas of modern and historic (circa 18th century) boat wheelhouses demonstrate how navigating open water has changed since European explorers first sailed the Oregon Coast. Biographies of accomplished aquatic archaeologists tell the human dimension of this exploration story, and remind visitors as they exit that they too can discover what lies below. The underwater world is rife with complex ecosystems and inaccessible to most people who make decisions that impact it every day. A small field of scientists and researchers are casting light onto this realm to help people understand their past and look to the future.
