Reynolds High School is located in Troutdale, OR (east of Portland) and serves nearly 3,000 students each year. The Chamber Orchestra is an auditioned group of the top string players in the program and is made up of mostly upperclassmen. The string program currently consists of four string orchestras, a symphony orchestra, and a pit orchestra for the musical. In 2016 the Chamber Orchestra went on tour in Anaheim, CA and had a recording session in the Disneyland recording studio. They also took 1st place at the Clackamas Community College Orchestra Invitational.
McNary High School
Newport Youth Symphony
The McNary Chamber Ensemble is the most advanced of the three string orchestras at McNary High School in Keizer, Oregon. The Chamber Ensemble has garnered four top-five trophies in the past five OSAA State Orchestra Championships, and in 2017 its members earned the third-highest average GPA among state-qualifying orchestras.
Students from the Oregon coast rehearse and perform together throughout the year in two new Newport Symphony Orchestrasponsored youth orchestras, co-coordinated and led by NSO violinists Kathy Follett and Barbara Wilcox, with help from other NSO string musicians and area instructors. The Newport Youth Symphony of the Oregon Coast (NYSOC) is a full orchestra that includes intermediate and advanced string students, as well as youth woodwind, brass, and percussion players. The 2018-2019 season runs September through May and includes young musicians in grade 4 to high school who rehearse together along with their adult accompanists.
Special Guests: Oregon State University Chamber Strings Ensemble The OSU Chamber Strings is a select chamber ensemble representing the finest string musicians on the Oregon State University campus. The ensemble is coached by Dr. Marlan Carlson and frequently performs on and off campus, at both formal concerts and official university events. The OSU Chamber Strings vary in size depending on the needs of their current repertoire, and draws its members from the 110-piece Corvallis-OSU Symphony Orchestra which is one of the largest university-affiliated orchestras in the Pacific Northwest. The concert schedule of the symphony routinely includes the symphonies of Gustav Mahler and Anton Bruckner, and tone poems by Richard Strauss. The Corvallis-OSU Symphony has a well-funded orchestra scholarship program, awarding monies to students of all majors, including the sciences and engineering. In addition to opportunities such as performing with the chamber strings, selected student members of the COSUS are given opportunities to perform major solo works with the symphony.
Adam Flatt
As Music Director of the Newport Symphony Orchestra, the Colorado Ballet, and the Tuscaloosa Symphony, Adam Flatt, conductor, is an artistic leader in three different regions of the United States. In addition, he is guest conductor for orchestras, ballet and opera companies all over the country. Mr. Flatt also has a notable career in making music with some of our country’s most talented young musicians. He serves on the summer faculties of both the Rocky Ridge Music Center and the Curtis Institute of Music’s Summerfest, and recently conducted the springtime residency of the Landes-Jugend-Sinfonie-Orchester Saar. Mr. Flatt served an acclaimed seven year tenure as Music Director of the Denver Young Artists Orchestra, one of America’s best youth orchestras, leading its concerts at home and on international tours. During his DYAO tenure Mr. Flatt founded the organization’s first training ensembles: the Conservatory Orchestra and the Young String Ensemble. Before working in Denver, Mr. Flatt served for years on the staff of the Portland Youth Philharmonic, leading both of its training orchestras. He has led several festival and all-state orchestras in Indiana, California, and Colorado. Adam Flatt has a masters degree in conducting from the Indiana University School of Music, and his bachelor’s degree in music with honors from the University of California at Berkeley. He also studied at the Aspen Music Festival and the music academies of Vienna and Saarbrücken.
