Dear Readers, As I began thinking about soaking up the summer sun and making some weekend trips (a getaway to the beach is definitely in order), I began thinking about my makeup. As a woman, I love clothes, accessories and makeup. Summer, though, demands changes in beauty routines. As makeup artist Molly McWhorter says in our cover story, “Summer is all about radiance and color.” For our Charm cover story, we spoke to Molly and other experts in the field to bring you some advice about summer beauty routines and to tell you about some of the hottest trends. In this issue, you’ll also see the return of our regular Charm School feature where we like to share DIY stories with you. This month, you can learn about floor care from the experts. For our Women in Business feature, we’re spotlighting Libby Bryson, who balances being a career woman with being a mother. Don’t forget to flip the issue this month to check out View, where our cover story is all about East Texas barbecue. When I learned May 22 that Bodacious Bar-B-Q on Mobberly Avenue ranked at No. 4 on Texas Monthly’s much anticipated barbecue list, I could not have been prouder. Jordan Jackson and Scott Turner (and, of course, Bodacious founder Roland Lindsey) are so deserving of the honor. But the list didn’t stop at Bodacious. Joseph’s Riverport Bar-B-Que in Jefferson and Stanley’s Famous Pit Bar-B-Q in Tyler also made the list, and three other East Texas restaurants earned well-deserved honorable mentions. In our cover story, you’ll read about what makes East Texas barbecue so special and different from other parts of the state. Chris Lozano’s photos that accompany the story will make your mouth water and, if you haven’t already, you’ll definitely want to visit these local gems. Elsewhere in View, you’ll find our regular features on health, fitness, nonprofits and events, as well as a special article about things you can do with your dog this summer. I have three fur babies myself and love spending time with them. Summer is the perfect time to get them outdoors for some fun, and our article has a lot of great recommendations. I hope you enjoy this issue of Charm/View and I hope you enjoy your summer.

clane@news-journal.com

Hi, and welcome to the July/August issue of Charm/View magazine! As the Special Publications Manager, this is now my second magazine to help put together and it’s been so much fun. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting many of you at our Charm/View cover reveal parties, at special events and functions, and as I’ve been out visiting the many wonderful businesses that make Longview and the surrounding area such a great place to work, shop, eat and play. One of my favorite aspects about my job is helping businesses showcase what makes them special, whether it’s through advertising opportunities or with my first love, writing. I get so much joy talking with, and writing about, the businesses and topics we mention in the articles I write for the publication. If you’re a business owner, you have a story to tell about your business. I’m here to help you make sure it’s told in a way you never have in the past. People want an emotional connection with the businesses they frequent and we offer several ways to make this happen through special advertising sections, sponsored content and niche advertising opportunities. In this issue, our One-Tank Trip article about Jefferson and the Caddo Lake area is partially sponsored by advertisers in both of those locations. In our previous issue, we told the story of Bill’s Organic Gardens and the Community Supported Agriculture program they offer our community. These are great examples of how we use a variety of relevant forms of advertising to help our local businesses connect with our community. This issue, like our last one, can also still be found in more than 20 hotels between Longview, Kilgore and Marshall. This allows visitors to our area to see Charm/View as a go-to source for fun things to do and great places to eat, bringing additional awareness and revenue to our local businesses. If you’re a business owner seeking ways to stay relevant and top-of-mind while reaching a more targeted audience, or know of someone who would be interested, I’m just a phone call or email away. You’ll also see the magazine in more free-standing racks and in business lobbies throughout Longview, Kilgore and Marshall than our previous issue. If you want to find out where we distribute copies of the magazine so you don’t miss a future issue, we now have our list online at www.mycharmonline.com/find-charm-magazine and www.news-journal.com/find-view-magazine. You can even view both magazines on your mobile device when you visit www.issuu.com/newsjournal. Follow us on Facebook where we will also post the list and visit us at the Longview News-Journal at 320 E. Methvin Street to pick up a copy at our front desk. As always, we appreciate you, dear readers, and welcome your comments and suggestions on how we can continue to make Charm/View Magazine your goto source for everything from beauty and fashion to discovering the best places to eat, shop and play in East Texas.

my leg hair grows fast. speaking in beard terms, I’d probably have a 3:00 shadow, not a 5:00 shadow. so when lizzy waxed on – pun intended – about being completely stubble free for weeks, I knew I had to give it a shot. the first challenge is growing leg hair long enough for wax to grip. As I said, I feel like stubble grows mere hours after shaving. When faced with the challenge of growing leg hair the recommended ¼ to ½ inch length for waxing? that’s a whole different story. I powered through and got some areas to nearly ¼ inch. Or maybe more like 1/8 inch? I tried to measure the growth, but that is more challenging than you’d guess. And, it turns out that the hair on your legs grows at different rates in different areas. Inconvenient? Absolutely. Once I thought I’d achieved adequate length, I invested in sally hansen extra strength All-Over Body Wax hair Removal Kit ($9.34, Amazon). the box stated that “smart wax grabs hair, not skin” and boasted results lasting up to eight weeks. sold! Spider VeinS

A follow up Words by AMY MCHANeY

You may recall my last beauty column that addressed the issue of spider veins. I recently followed up on my own vein issues with Dr. Randy Morton of Longview Vein Clinic. Dr. Morton has been treating spider and varicose veins since the late ’90s. I had sclerotherapy many moons ago and was pleased with the results. Sclerotherapy is a treatment method in which spider veins are injected with a sclerosing solution to “cause necessary injury to the lining of the vein, ultimately resulting in occlusion of that vein and its demise.” Sclerotherapy is not a forever fix, and my subsequent twin

the remainder of the week. I followed up with Dr. Morton a week later with only very minor bruising and a new appointment for additional sclerotherapy. My experience so far has been nothing but positive. The pain involved in the actual procedure was minimal – on a scale of 1-10, I’d give it a 1. In hindsight, a valium was absolutely unnecessary (for me). The pain later in the day was next to nothing. The most discomfort I experienced was from yanking the compression stockings on – and not because of pressure on my legs. Those suckers are TIGHT and hard to pull up! I will continue to report on my vein progress in the next issue – complete with updated pictures – stay tuned! C

However, the one thing I can’t escape from is my roots (no pun intended). so, I embarked on a quest to find the perfect, affordable, longlasting root touch up, and I discovered there are way more than I imagined. you can find everything from sprays and creams to powders and gels in nearly all hair colors. I wanted something easy and affordable so I bought two products – the l’Oreal® Paris Root Cover up spray in red (ulta, $10.99, 2 ounces ) and Ag Hair Care Brunette tinted Dry shampoo (ulta, $4.99, 1 ounce). thankfully, I had at least an inch of root growth to work with a few days before my next coloring.

After taking my “before” photo, I chose the l’Oreal® Paris Root Cover up spray. I have to say, I was impressed. I got the coverage I was looking for and although it’s a little darker on the roots, if you look close enough, I don’t think it was too bad given it was my first try. I used the dry shampoo in the morning, and although I liked the color coverage (my red hair is more dark auburn so the brunette blended in well), I wasn’t really impressed with the way

it worked as a dry shampoo. I used enough (I thought) and my hair still looked/felt a little greasy. As for the L’Oreal root cover up spray, the coverage is great,

especially for two particular spots that don’t take color well – the hair beside my right ear and the spot literally where my hair parts above my forehead. The color from the spray lasted the entire time between washing. However, after several uses I noticed it caused my scalp to get really itchy and dry. So, it’s definitely going to be used only as needed in between colorings. If you’re interested in trying one of these products or the other

mistakenly use acrylic floor finish or “polish” on wood, laminate or other hard surfaces using products marketed to help “beautify, protect and restore the shine.” “In fact, these products result in a costly fix to strip the multiple coatings applied by the homeowner or housekeeper,” Andy said. For best results, he says to “always call (a professional) before your floor looks dirty. This will help prevent premature wear and an even more costly restorative cleaning.” When it comes to caring for your area rug, you can maintain its beauty and durability with a few simple steps. If you’re planning to sell your home and want your floors looking as good as new, Nathan Zedlitz of East Texas Floor Care offers homeowners some tips on how to get ready to stage their home. He says “the baseboards should be cleaned before you vacuum and carpets should be vacuumed and steam cleaned.” If you have tile, then “the tiles and grout will need to be cleaned. Laminate, linoleum and wood will need to be cleaned and polished.” And if you have marble and granite tiles those should be cleaned by a professional “to avoid spotty, oily and dirty floors.” Whether it’s a clean-up job or a home staging situation, it’s important to keep in mind that a floor isn’t just a floor, and not every job calls for the same type of cleaning products and processes. Keep these tips in mind and you’ll maintain your gorgeous floors for years to come. C

Y L L A C I N IRO ll brandon Words by apri ll elle lavere h ic m Illustrations by

It’s

no secret that when you become a mom, you go through a bit of an identity crisis. It can be hard to remember who you were when it feels like who you are now is

someone who spends all of her time cleaning up mystery stains. Is that poop or chocolate? Apple juice or pee? I used to be on a first name basis with the mayor and win journalism awards. Cottage cheese or vomit? Which is why these days I always dread the moment when someone asks me “so, what do you do?” And they always ask it. Always. Because we are Americans and as Americans we need to immediately know what you do with your life so we can then determine how harshly to judge you. God bless the U.S.A. 28 Charm | J U ly / AU G U S T

I didn’t always hate this quirk of American society. I proudly declared “journalist” for a long time. I worked hard to become a journalist. I loved being a journalist. It was a badge I wore with honor. But the waters muddied a bit when my husband and I moved to a new city. Unable to get a full-time job in my field, I started working from home, writing a regular column for a handful of different newspapers and magazines. I’d also occasionally take on a freelance writing project. So, I told people I was a “freelance writer.” But since that wasn’t as clear cut as “journalist.” I’d have to describe what that entailed and watch as people’s eyes slowly glazed over because, really, they were just being polite. Then we had kids and the waters got downright murky. Because now my main job was keeping those two suicidal lunatics alive while trying to squeeze in some writing time on the weekends. “But I’m still a writer!” I’d practically scream at people, less they be confused as to my real identity. Sure, “technically” I stayed home and “raised” my children, but that didn’t make me, you know, a “mom.” It’s more like a hobby, really. I’m wearing these yoga pants ironically! It took me a while, but I finally realized why this title-less existence stressed me out so much. The current language we have for women

without a clear cut “job” is awful. Take the word “housewife.” I hate that word. I didn’t marry my house. I mean, that thing is filthy. Even if it proposed, I’d politely decline and then hand it a broom and whisper “I think you know why.” (And “homemaker” is even worse, especially if you have kids. Because when you have kids, you aren’t “making” a “home” so much as you are trying to prevent said kids from burning it down to the ground.) I also loathe the term “stay-at-home mom.” I don’t stay at home. No mom does. We’re constantly lugging those adorable kids everywhere, and yet, no one refers to us as Playground-Library-Gas Station-

Coffeeshop-Liquor Store moms. Alas, those are the terms we are stuck with if we are the ones primarily taking care of the domestic side of life (and fellas, I haven’t forgotten about you; “househusband” and “stay-at-home dad,” even when used tongue-in-cheek, is equally inaccurate and ridiculous). Can you imagine if we referred to everyone by their most common location and their role in the family? Oh hey, let me introduce you to my other half, Ryan. He’s an office husband. Or, hey, nice to see you, Sheryl, I’d like you to meet my bar grandpa. This is Lila, my stay-at-the-yoga-studio sister-in-law. My crackhouse cousin had a rough upbringing, what with being raised by my prison uncle and my motel aunt. Why yes, I have two teenagers, a couch son and a Burger King parking lot daughter. You get the picture. Why do we still use these terms? Even “working mom” is a bit of a misnomer. No one calls my husband a “working dad.” He’s a graphic designer, who happens to have kids. I wouldn’t even care about how inaccurate the current words are that we use to describe women who deal in the

domestic arts, except for the fact that they have a faint whiff of negativity surrounding them. Housewives are considered vapid or desperate or gold diggers. Stay-at-home moms are boring or unambitious or lazy. Homemakers are busy wearing gingham dresses and churning butter in the corner of the kitchen. So, I for one think it’s time we start changing these outdated and, quite frankly, unfair titles. I haven’t come up with the new terms just yet (what with spending all my time sniffing mystery stains and all) but maybe something like “full-time parent” or “professional mom” or “I’m my toddler’s juice butler.” Or perhaps something like “Domestic Overlord.” That has a nice ring to it. Or maybe all of us ladies can take a page from the Tyrion Lannister playbook and when people ask us what we do, we coolly respond, “I drink, and I know things.” Because that response is 100 percent accurate.
