Interested in Pinterest I admit to having a major fascination with all things high tech. My latest venture is the world of Pinterest, a new social network. I am online with my website for my publication (voiceoftherivervalley.com), two Facebook pages, Twitter, LinkedIn (loaded with professional information and research as well as discussions with various professionals), Google+ and have now added Pinterest. So just what is this new Internet toy? Well, participants have a page to call their own. On this page (which can grow to be very long), one puts bulletin boards and then “pins” things on the boards. For example, I have a board named “Voice of the River Valley.” On it, I place various cover shots, announcements and anything else related to my publication. I have another board called “Books I Recommend” and, yes, on that board I can place pictures of book covers easily pinned from Amazon.com (one of the biggest online bookstores). That is easier than going to my bookcase, taking a picture or scanning the cover and then uploading it. All together, so far, I have about nine boards, including “Animals to Love” (photos of dogs, cats, anything cute), “Music and Videos” (various clips of music and videos, many from YouTube.com) and “Feed the Spirit” (a list of quotes mostly that inspire me). Now why would I spend time doing this? One simple reason pops into my mind. It is fun. It is an easy way to collect quotations, videos, a list of books I want to read and more. I do not have to file them or create a pile on my desk that never gets filed. I do not have to keep lists. When the day comes that I am ready to put a book on grief together, I will have collected lots of To FRIEDEL-HUNT, Pg. 2B

From 1997 to 1999, Donna Goeddaeus owned a gallery in Eagle River called The Secret Forest. Now she lives in one. A half-mile-long, unpaved, meandering road through thick woods ends at a small clearing and Goeddaeus’ home. The original building was transported to this site in 1910 from the old Army base, Fort Sheridan in Illinois. It served as a hunting cabin, with no water or electricity, until she bought it and worked her magic on it. It is now a two-story, eclectic — a little Victorian, a little “shabby chic” — cozy and comfortable home for Goeddaeus and her two dogs, shelter siblings Tanner and Roxy. Goeddaeus is a dichotomy, with a vibrant life of art, work and community service, and the contrasting hermit side. “I am a solitary sort of person,” she said, “and I love it.” She was born in Iron Mountain, Mich., and when she was 9 her family moved to Milwaukee. Albino deer added to school’s display An albino deer mount has been added to the wildlife display in the lobby of Northland Pines High School (NPHS). Mounted and installed by taxidermist Ron Lax, the deer joins the educational display which includes a wolf, fawn, skunk, owl, otter, beaver, bobcat, duck, pine marten and six fish. The albino buck, recovered by Department of Natural Resources (DNR) warden Tim Price, was found near Manitowish Waters, believed killed by another buck during a late-rut fight in the fall of 2010. This educational wildlife display is made possible by the time and talent of many volunteers. The background of the display case was painted by Stephanie Daniel, a 2008
NPHS graduate and a recent graduate of the Art Institute in Schaumburg, Ill. Rick Lax, Ron Lax’s son, designed the display and also created the fish mounts. Ron Lax also created most of the other mounts. The animals were donated from members of the community or recovered from the DNR. The school is currently in search of funding to have two bear cubs recovered by the DNR added to the display. School officials would like to obtain more animal mounts including songbirds, and also donations to help with display costs. An account has been established to cover the costs of display additions and improvements. For more information or to make a donation, contact Mike Richie, district adminis-
trator, at (715) 479-6487 option 1, ext. 1; Rick Lax at (715) 547-3710; Ron Lax at (715) 479-1877; or Price at (715) 892-0054.

I also have a public board called “Loss and Grief,” and I post quotes from books, book titles and more information for those who are grieving. Several people have communicated with me and thanked me for this information. People are free to go to as many boards as they wish and re-pin things they find and want for their own boards. Sort of like seeing something in the newspaper and clipping it out for safe keeping. I have a few friends who I know face-to-face and who are on Pinterest and some I will never meet in person but which I get to know over time and feel a kinship with them. We meet new people

Nicolet Players to present ‘Harvey’ Nicolet Players will present the comedy “Harvey” in six performances scheduled Friday, May 4, and Saturday, May 5 at 7:30 p.m.; Sunday, May 6 at 2 p.m.; Thursday, May 10, Friday, May 11, and Saturday, May 12, at 7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, May 13, at 2 p.m. Performances will take place in the Nicolet College Theater located on the Nicolet College campus in Rhinelander. The play, which debuted on Broadway in 1944, centers
around the rather eccentric Elwood P. Dowd and his imaginary friend, Harvey, who just happened to be a 6-foot-tall rabbit. When Elwood introduces Harvey at a party, his societyobsessed sister, Veta, decides it’s time to commit Elwood to an insane asylum. But when Veta confesses to the doctors that she, herself, has seen Harvey, the story takes a hilarious twist and comedy breaks out as the plot unfolds. “Rehearsals have been a
lot of fun and it’s been great to see all the cast members get deeper and deeper into their characters,” said Jim Nuttall, Nicolet College Theatre director. “Everything is coming together very nicely for this to be an excellent performance.” Tickets are $6 and $8 and may be ordered online at nicoletlive.com or by calling Nicolet College at (715) 365-4646; 1-(800) 544-3039, ext. 4646; TDD 711 relay; or 1-(800) 947-3529.
Riders’ music reflected heritage Very few members of the audience attending the recent Riders in the Sky performance at the Northland Pines High School auditorium were unfamiliar with the songs presented that evening.
A Review By Barbara Wilkinson Indeed, they wanted to hear their old favorites made famous by the Riders’ predecessors Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and The Sons of the Pioneers. Sponsored by Headwaters Council for the Performing Arts (HCPA), this troupe is about the only one that has kept the Western-style myth and music alive and true to its original style for over a century. Clad in true Western garb and bearing names that fit the genre, Too Slim, Ranger Doug, Woody Paul and Joey the “Cow Polka King,” the musicians belted out songs that almost exclusively dealt with the daily life of a cowboy. Taking listeners back to that carefree time of hazy nostalgia, the musicians quickly saddled up and began the evening with a moving adaptation of “Back Where I Was Born.” The audience was immediately captivated not only with the harmonized yodeling, but
with the impromptu bantering of jokes about bulls and dusty trails that created some good laughs. Together they blended well and skillfully exhibited their respective talents: Ranger Doug with his deep, rich baritone voice and exceptional guitar playing; Too Slim with his ability to toy with the audience and his clever bass accompaniment; Woody Paul with his clear tenor voice and award-winning fiddle; and Joey with his accordion prowess and expertise in polka music. The audience then found itself on the open range as the following selection was a parching rendition of “Cool Water.” The fiddle played a prominent role in the piece, enticing Woody Paul to dance. There were many highlights throughout the evening. A haunting version of “The Wayward Wind” demonstrated the talented baritone voice of Ranger Doug and led into a lively rendition of “Don’t Fence Me In.” Woody Paul’s high-speed fiddle playing enlivened the song. Talented accordionist Joey played a spirited version of the polka “Hoop De Doo” with backup from the rest of the group. The audience was enticed to clap along with the performers. They rounded out the first segment with a poignant account of the inspirational song “Land Beyond

work. “To live in the beautiful North Woods and to be able to support myself doing what I love is truly a blessing,” she said. Goeddaeus’ influence inspired the beginning of the Three Lakes Center for the Arts in 2003, before the old theater was purchased. Two of the founders contacted her to teach art lessons and, because of the cultural endeavors already in motion in Three Lakes, she encouraged them to build on what they already had. “I’m a big-picture person,” she said. The center is now into its third full season of gallery, classes, films and live performances. Goeddaeus is on the board of Northwoods Share, a not-for-profit group concerned with people’s spiritual, social, emotional and financial needs. They distribute toys to the needy at Christmas and work with the local food pantry, in addition to other services. She is outreach deacon at her church and has an inspirational blog at thoughtsfromcreekcrossing.wordpress.com. “I am so content with my life right now,” Goeddaeus said. “I would always love to have more time to hike, canoe, write and paint. I have talents I was born with, but you need to recognize the gift and do something with it. You can’t be afraid of your gift. Embrace it! Be the best you can be!” Goeddaeus will be the featured artist for the month of May at the gallery in the Three Lakes Center for the Arts in the Northwoods. There will be a reception for her from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 4, in the gallery at 1760 Superior St. in downtown Three Lakes.

the Sun.” It spoke to the Western man’s closeness to nature and God while its harmony profoundly touched the spiritual side of the listeners. After a rollin’ rendition of “Rawhide,” complete with whips cracking, shouts, whistles and yodeling, the group held a brief intermission. The second half opened by featuring Ranger Doug “Back in the Saddle Again” supported by the rest of the group. The song concluded with some high-spirited harmonized yodeling, which was performed in double time. Accordionist Joey played two rousing solos titled “The Clarinet Polka” (with no clarinet) and “You Are My Sunshine.” Toward the end of both, Woody Paul joined him with some elaborate fiddling. The group closed with a rendition of “Happy Trails to You” which was followed by a standing ovation and an encore of “Tumbling Tumbleweed.” Both exhibited slow, melodious harmonies and stayed very close to the Western tradition. The fiddle highlighted both songs with a yearning background, making the audience long for more. Without doubt, the spectators enjoyed the performance immensely, clapping and tapping their feet. The friendly banter among the performers was contagious and the audience ate it up. Once again, HCPA had a winner.
career in advertising and for 13 years owned an awardwinning advertising agency. “It was a dynamic time to be in Milwaukee,” noted Goeddaeus. She represented a wide variety of businesses, from big and small resorts to the Pfister and Marc Plaza hotels, Mount Sinai Hospital, the zoo and everything from Fortune 500 companies to a bridal shop. “I developed marketing plans and created ad campaigns,” she said. “Computers changed it all. There were no art departments — a different creative energy. It was no fun anymore.” She was lured to the North Woods to work as creative director for a publishing company of nature and wildlife books, calendars and music. “I have always loved nature and wildlife, so leaving the city behind was an easy decision to make,” she explained. “Then, after a few years, my job ended without warning when the company was sold. I was stunned and had no idea what to do next, so I prayed that God would give me the answer and left it all in His hands.” Upon awakening the next morning, she had her answer. She knew that she wanted to paint and she wanted to paint horses. She had taken lessons from a professional painter one summer when she was 16. She had her old paint box and easel and everything he had taught her came back easily that day when she began to paint. “Painting led to owning an art gallery for a while and taking commissions for horse and dog portraits. I love to paint portraits,” she said. “I taught drawing classes for Nicolet College, had a business with my sister that sold art supplies and gave private art lessons.”
For five years she was a partner in the chocolate company Equus where her artwork was featured on the packaging. With a partner running the factory in Wabeno, Goeddaeus handled the painting, marketing and sales. The chocolate had wide distribution “until the economy destroyed us,” she said. Her work still can be seen on the labels of coffee bags at Eagle River Roasters. Goeddaeus currently works out of her home studio, Creek Crossing Studio Ltd. in Conover. The studio is bright and spacious, organized into areas for painting, classes and work space. She likes to use colored pencils, pastels and acrylic and oil paint. She only has time for one student these days as she is working on drawings in a storybook for All About Learning Press in Eagle River. For animal sketches, she may use as many as 30 different pictures of an animal and gather other reference material before she does rough sketches and then refined ones. “I do freelance illustrating for children’s books, including some for award-winning local author Kim Simac,” said Goeddaeus. “I also do freelance art direction and marketing consulting. I love painting animal portraits, but consulting and illustrating pay the bills.” The intensely sensitive eyes of Cochise, Goeddaeus’ first horse, shine down from his framed painting on her wall. They enjoyed a friendship which lasted 33 years until his life ended peacefully in a meadow one summer day. Love of horses, dogs and all animals is a prime focus of Goddaeus’ life and art-

Talcott to present prayer/healing program National speaker Brian Talcott will present How Relying on God Brings Healing Tuesday, May 8, at 6:30 p.m. at the Minocqua Public Library, located in downtown Minocqua. According to Talcott, learning to pray through the deep study of the Bible and “Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures” by Mary Baker Eddy has brought him lifelong health and led him, more than 30 years ago, to become a practitioner of Christian Science healing and later a teacher of this science.
“In this lecture I explore the mental nature of both the cause and cure of illness, explaining how Mary Baker Eddy found and followed Christ Jesus’ approach to healing,” said Talcott. “A central focus of my lecture is gaining the understanding that we intimately coexist with God, who is love.” Talcott’s background in biblical studies and his years of experience as a U.S. Air Force chaplain led him to the public practice of Christian Science. His presentation is designed to be of interest to
those working in the healthcare field, those treating domestic violence and child abuse as well as those in the ministry and anyone with an interest in spirituality and its impact on health and wellbeing. Last year, he addressed the Ministry Health Care BioEthics Committee chairpersons. Talcott is a member of the Christian Science Board of Lectureship and is a resident of Berkeley, Calif. For more information, call Kim Korinek at (715) 3585350.
The work of Lac du Flambeau painter Christine E. Alfery has recently been added to the online gallery at the website PortalWisconsin.org. The nonprofit site is the state’s premier online resource for culture, arts, humanities and history. The site allows Web users to discover some of the state’s finest artists working in a variety of media. Wisconsin artists are welcome to submit their work, which is then juried by a panel of respected educators, artists and curators. There are currently 459 artists featured in the gallery. “When a culture loses its ability to imagine, to think that which was unthinkable, it loses its sense of the future and of what could be,” noted Alfery. “The unthinkable, the unimaginable exists in the moment and is profound and full of movement.” Art enthusiasts may see her work by visiting the website and clicking on the gallery link. The PortalWisconsin.org site is a project of the Cultural Coalition of Wisconsin, composed of Wisconsin Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters; Wisconsin Arts Board; Wisconsin Historical Society; Wisconsin Humanities Council: Wisconsin Public Radio; Wisconsin Public Television; and University of Wisconsin-Extension Continuing Education.

Rev. Ann Wahlers to retire after 20 years of ministry After more than 20 years of ministry in the United Church of Christ (UCC), the Rev. Ann Wahlers of Rhinelander will retire from active parish ministry at the end of April. She currently serves as interim minister at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Eagle River while that congregation secures a new pastor following the retirement of the Rev. Patricia Tucker. Wahler’s last service with the church will take place Sunday, April 29, at 9 a.m., the only service at the church that morning. Highlights will include the confirmation of four young men into the church, along with the baptism of one of them. At the close of the service, a ritual of farewell will be conducted by Pat Juday of Rhinelander, a member of the Division on Church and Ministry of the Northwest Association of the Wisconsin Conference of the UCC. Wahlers is chairperson of that group and will continue to serve in that capacity following her retirement. Born and raised in Neenah, Wahlers attended the University of Wisconsin and worked toward a degree in applied music. She later attained a degree in business. After her three children were out of high school, she entered United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities in Minnesota. Wahlers planned to work part time in an effort to take some courses. Instead, she became a full-time student and graduated in 1989

with a master of divinity degree. She accepted a pastorate in Grand Marais, Minn., that year and was ordained by the Rev. David Moyer, now head of the Wisconsin Conference of the UCC. She served churches in Bellingham, Wash.; Antigo; Land O’ Lakes; and Phelps before retiring from full-time ministry in 2007.
She continued to work as a pulpit supply minister in the North Woods area before accepting the interim position in Eagle River last August. Still planning to spend her time helping others, Wahlers said her new passion will be training a goldendoodle puppy named Hodie, the Hodag Dog to become a therapy dog. She plans to adopt the puppy May 7.

could save lives, according to Myron Gadke, mobile services manager. For the past two decades, national breast cancer death rates have dropped, possibly due to earlier disease detection and improved treatment options. More than 230,000 women in the United States were expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011, according to an American Cancer Society report. “Screening mammography is important because it’s the first line of defense in the fight against breast cancer,” said Gadke. “Early detection is the key to successful treatment. Marshfield Clinic believes it’s important to provide mobile mammography services because many women we see would not have access close to home to mammograms or bone density screenings.” Marshfield Clinic’s two digital mobile mammography units feature digital imaging equipment and computeraided detection for precise integration of image data. This equipment allows for the best possible image, less patient discomfort and effi-
cient data transfer to physicians across the clinic system, which leads to faster mammography exam interpretation. In addition, the newest unit provides bone-density screening for osteoporosis. During one-on-one mammography screening, licensed and certified female technicians from Marshfield Clinic conduct a thorough medical history, answer questions and perform an exam. Screening is open to anyone, but advance appointments are required. For patients with health insurance or Medicare, the mammogram costs will be billed to their health-insurance provider. For financial assistance for a screening mammogram, call the Marshfield Clinic patient assistance staff at (715) 389-4475. These screenings are made possible by a grant from Furniture & ApplianceMart and the Fonti family. For more information about mobile healthservices, visit the Marshfield Clinic website at marshfieldclinic. org.

ST. GERMAIN/SAYNER Town board installs new supervisors; lake district, meeting agenda discussed WALLY GEIST (715) 892-3545
Newly elected supervisors Bill Bates and Marv Anderson were sworn in, beginning their two-year terms, at the recent St. Germain Town Board meeting. Meeting topics included a discussion on the Lost Lake Protection and Rehabilitation District and the legality of the wording on the agenda and open meeting law requirements. “The county has approved the formation of Lost Lake Protection and Rehabilitation District. We had over 60% of the property owners approve the creation of the district. Of 325 petitions, 201 were returned marked ‘yes’,” said Anderson. “There were no ‘No’ petitions. The district is overseen by five members, three landowners from within the district. Two more representatives will be appointed, one from the town and one from the county. The first organizational meeting will be in late June or early July,” he continued. There was extended discussion on the legality of agenda item 10.2, that allowed discussion on items that may come from various town committee reports. “I am disappointed with how the board put this agenda out where action items 10.2 allows that (unspecified) items may come up at the town meeting,” said Ed Siergiej. “You think this is OK. I think it is totally wrong.” “This agenda was posted yesterday afternoon before the meeting (Public Works) last night. So something that came out of that meeting last night could have come up tonight after the agenda was

posted,” Siergiej continued. “Is that what you are saying? That is just not right.” Chairman Walt Camp noted that the board is not supposed to comment on citizen concerns raised at a meeting, but did so because of special circumstances. Earlier in the meeting, Todd Wiese, former town supervisor, objected to the same open-ended listing of agenda item 10.2, noting that people have to be informed as to the action items and they need to be listed separately. “This has been addressed with the Towns Association and this is perfectly legal,” Camp said. “Normally we list everything because the committees have met the week prior to the town board meeting, but because the Public Works meeting was last night, we couldn’t do that.” Weise questioned whether
the board had looked at Wisconsin Statute 19.82 or the Wisconsin Towns Association Handbook, and Camp responded that he had talked to the Wisconsin Towns Association attorney. In other business, retiring board member Lee Christensen was honored for his 10 years of service to the town, including his work with the development committee responsible for creating the municipal golf course. Following the golf course report by Margo RogersAnderson, Camp announced that Christensen would donate a second sign for the course and the signs will be placed so they can be seen from both directions of travel on Highway 70. Sharon Trudeau plans to present a donation to the St. Germain Fire Department toward the purchase of an
automated external defibrillator Friday, April 27. One unit will be stationed in the pavilion during the summer and the other will remain permanently in the community center. Trudeau is continuing to raise funds for the unit. Donations may be made to the St. Germain Volunteer Fire Department AED, P.O. Box 12, St. Germain, WI 54558. Funding for the $78,000 replacement of the 3,000-gallon tank on the fire department’s tanker truck was turned over to the Finance Committee for review. In other action, the board approved road sealing as part of the town’s five-year contract with Fahrner Blacktop Sealers and part of the town’s budget of $50,000. Roads to be treated include Birchwood Drive, Muskelunge Creek Road, Christmas Tree Lane, Indian Trails, C Kleppe Road and Catman Road. Project cost will be $48,604. The board awarded the annual fireworks contract to Krueger Pyrotechnics for $20,000, down $4,000 from last year’s budgeted amount due to considerations about the economy. The St. Germain Chamber of Commerce will donate $3,000 toward the purchase of a blower for use on the Bike and Hike Trail as well as on other town property. The Bo-Boen Club was asked to turn in a list of town roads that need to be approved for use by snowmobiles at the May meeting. A Neighborhood Watch organizational meeting is scheduled for the public Thursday, May 3, at 7 p.m.

Nancy Minx of the Vilas Historical Museum displayed a Bennett typewriter at her recent presentation to the Women’s Service Club. —Photo By Wally Geist
Museum program featured at meeting Nancy Minx recently presented a program on the Vilas Historical Museum to 38 members of the Women’s Service Club. Minx, who serves as the museum’s treasurer, brought items from the museum to illustrate the types of objects in various display areas at the facility located on Highway 155 in Sayner. The museum, which includes displays located in two buildings, opened in 1969 and is supported by a $3 entrance fee, memberships, gifts and donations, including past support from the Women’s Service Club. “About eight years ago, we tried to start a ‘new home’ where lighting and environment, including running water inside the building, would be best for the artifacts,” said Minx. “The economy was not in our favor, and we are still in the original building where the upside is that people love to tour the old building.” One of the items displayed by Minx was a woman’s fur hat. “Hats from the museum will be used at our annual style show, July 17, at the Sayner Community Building,” she said. “The show will use all museum clothing dating from about 1800 to 1960. Admission will be a donation of $15 on the day of the show.” Minx also displayed a Bennett typewriter used by Enos F. Hayward of Conover
to write two poetry books, including “Two Bits” in 1904 and “Moccasin Trail” in 1926. Throughout the winter, the museum started cataloging all the items. Volunteers worked to number, photograph and record each item. The Please Touch area of the museum is near the entrance of the old building and has been popular among guests. “Children, young and old, like touching toys and items we feel are safe to touch from our collection. These are items that will not be degraded by skin oil and handling,” she noted. “Our staff is constantly dusting because the old section is drafty and dust accumulates quickly,” she said. The museum has many volunteer opportunities, and anyone interested in volunteering may visit during open hours. The museum is set to open Saturday, May 26, and will be open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information on the museum or volunteer opportunities, call (715) 5423388.
