Ride the 1900’s railway back in time to the Wisconsin Forestry Museum Visitors to the Wisconsin Forestry Museum in Laona can expect an exciting ride through Wisconsin history. From the late 1800s Soo Line Depot in Laona, visitors climb aboard the 1916 “4-Spot” steam locomotive and travel to Wisconsin Forestry Museum. This train has run on the same tracks for more than 80 years. The “4-spot” steam locomotive was built in 1916 by the Vulcan Iron Works in Wilkes Barre, Pa. It was purchased Sept. 22, 1926, and was brought to Laona for use in the logging industry. The steam engine pulls two all-steel passenger coach cars and three cabooses. Passengers can sit in a rare cupola caboose as the vintage steam engine takes them to an actual site of a North Woods logging camp. As the conductors board people onto the train, the familiar call of “All aboard!” fills the air and the train lets off a few whistles. The train then backs up all the way to the camp, taking guests back in time to the early 1900s. Wisconsin Forestry Museum’s history dates back to the late 1890s, when it was established as a logging camp. In

1969, it opened as a museum. Wisconsin Forestry Museum was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996, and also has won numerous awards. After the train drops guests off, they can visit the logging museum, nature center, animal barn and corral, blacksmith shop, slaughterhouse and Cracker Barrel Store. Children and adults can enjoy the animal barn and corral, which features a variety of baby animals to feed and pet, including rabbits, guinea hens, turkeys, chickens, goats, llamas, kittens and even a turtle town. All the animals can be approached and petted. The nature center on site is a hands-on facility featuring animal pelts and displays of plants, minerals and animals native to the North Woods. It also contains a selection of fossils. Guests can partake in the award-winning “Green Treasure” forest tour. Guests on the tour can learn about the history of the trees as well as how to identify different varieties. A Wilderness Water Tour also is available, which takes patrons on a 30-minute hayrack and pontoon boat ride down

Schedule of events The North Woods is recognized across the Midwest as a summer recreation paradise, offering boating, fishing, golfing, hiking, camping and water sports of all kinds, Besides the many recreational activities, most communities and nonprofit organizations in Vilas and Oneida counties plan family-oriented events for residents and vacationers alike during the summer months. The activities range from art, antique and quilt shows to summer festivals, powwows and fishing tournaments. Most of the events include fun for all ages, plus plenty of food and refreshments. The following list of July activities was compiled by the Vilas County Advertising Department. Street dances set in Eagle River Businesses in the Eagle River area will host Thursday night street dances downtown throughout the summer. The music will start at 7 p.m. each Thursday through Aug. 21. The performers will be set up on Main Street between The Country Store and Eagle Wings, facing north.

Popular summer event draws near, Artarama ’08 set to go July 19 In just a short time, a favorite summer attraction will draw thousands of fine art enthusiasts to a little park in Eagle River. Promising the same wonderful array of treasures as always, Artarama’s River Walk Art Show will be held on Saturday, July 19, at Riverside Park near the Vilas Country Fairgrounds. The exhibition will be open from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., rain or shine. It was 36 years ago when a small group of community-minded individuals, who loved the world of art, conceived

the idea for a quality art show. From that core group grew what has become one of the Midwest’s most prestigious art and crafts shows. “We have learned that the combination of quality and diversity is a guaranteed crowd pleaser,” comments Artarama committee member Kathy Anderson. “It takes a full year of work and coordination to put this show together. We constantly look for fresh and innovative creations that not only reflect great skill, but talent and taste as well.” The committee selects

a balance of artists and craftspeople within painting, fiber art, woodworking, glassware, pottery, jewelry, photography, quality crafts and much more. Out of the hundreds of applications received this year, 125 artists have been chosen to exhibit at Artarama. A special tent will feature ‘Young at Art,’ where children are invited to display and sell their handmade arts and crafts. A silent auction will offer donated items from Artarama exhibitors at reduced prices, with all proceeds going toward scholarships. Artarama remains a nonprofit organization and all proceeds are returned to the community as civic contributions. Continuing to promote education, Artarama awarded two $1000 scholarships in 2008. Every year the Artarama committee purchases art-related books and videos for the Demmer Memorial Library, the Land O’ Lakes Library and the Walter E. Olson Memorial Library. Cash

Eagle River to host Mid Summer Madness The Eagle River Downtown Business Association will host Mid Summer Madness this Thursday, July 10 — a one-day-only summer sale and baseball giveaway. The sale will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wall Street will remain open and sales will be found inside the stores, where people can sign up for the baseball giveaway. Guides/Kids Fishing Day set in Eagle River July 10 The Eagle River Area Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center, along with the Eagle River Guides Association, will host the 28th annual Guides/Kids Day Thursday, July 10, starting at 10 a.m. Approximately 120 youths will await a chance to fish with a local fishing guide or fishing enthusiast, according to Kim Emerson, chamber events coordinator. The event will get under way with registration from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Vilas County Fairgrounds (Highway 70 West) for children 7 to 12 years old. During that time, there also will be fishing seminars given by the Eagle River Guides Association. There will be a casting contest from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. The big moment is at 11:30 a.m., when there will be a drawing to fish with guides. Children whose names are drawn leave for fishing for the afternoon with their guide. (Bag lunch and soda provided for guides and children fishing with guides.) There will be a parade of boats through downtown at noon as guides and children leave for their fishing adventure.

Three Lakes: Jewel of the Nicolet Residents and visitors to Three Lakes can find events, activities and North Woods beauty in all year long. During the summer months, camping, hiking, biking, fishing, golf and water sports can all contribute to a fun-filled vacation. Anglers of all skill levels can find the fish they’re looking for on the south end of the Three Lakes/Eagle River Chain. Muskie, walleye and northern pike, as well as bluegill, crappie, bass, trout and perch can all be caught in the area waters. Numerous fishing guides and tackle shops provide the equipment and knowledge to help anglers new to the area. Golfers can take Highway 32 two miles east out of Three Lakes and find Big Stone Golf Course. The scenic nine-hole course provides a challenge to any golfer. After their round, golfers can dine and drink at the clubhouse overlooking Big Stone Lake. Many country roads provide bikers the opportunity to see the natural beauty of the North Woods. Additionally, the Three Eagle Trail gives bikers an alternative to riding Highway 45 to Eagle River. The Saturday of Labor Day weekend, Nicolet Wheel-AWay gives riders a chance to ride 30 to 45 miles of road through the Nicolet National Forest. Hikers and campers can enjoy the Nicolet’s

beauty on the many trails and campsites in the forest. Franklin Lake, Giant Pine, Spectacle Lake, Kentuck Lake, Luna-White Deer, Seven Mile Lake and the Sam Campbell Memorial Hiking Trail offer different length trails for different skill levels. The fall season brings hunters who’ll find plenty of grouse, duck and white-tailed deer. Snowmobilers are sure to find plenty of trails in the Three Lakes area. The Three Lakes trail system features about 70 miles of state-funded trails and nearly 50 miles of locally funded trails. These also connect to the major trails of the North Woods. Snowmobile rentals are available from many area businesses. Cross-country ski trails can be found throughout the Nicolet forest and surrounding areas. Winter visitors are also less than two hours away from several Wisconsin and Upper Michigan downhill ski areas. There also are a number of local events. Weekly events like Concerts in the Park are extremely popular. Every Tuesday evening, July through August, The Three Lakes Historical Society puts on a concert. Custom jewelry and musical clocks found at Lehner-Stephan Jewelers In 1976, Mike Stephan was attending college at UW-Oshkosh. In the summers he would visit his uncle Al Lehner in the great North Woods. His uncle told Mike and his brother, “I wish one of you would go to school for watch making and take over my business.” Two years later, Mike was attending school in Milwaukee for watch making, and two years later, he took over for his uncle. A year later, his uncle died and he was left to learn the rest of the business by himself. He has owned the store since 1980, though it was originally founded in 1945 by his uncle, Al Lehner. With more than 30 years of experience as a certified master watchmaker, Mike Stephan has a philosophy about jewelry that many other places seem to lack. “My aunt always used to say, ‘If you can’t do it

right the first time, when will you find the time to do it again?’ ” Mike Stephan repairs jewelry and watches and often ends up making them better than they were before the repair. “Lots of pieces are made to cost less. They just aren’t as good structurally. It’s what you put into it.” Stephan said, “If it is worth fixing to the person, I’ll try to do it. My motto is, if it’s been made once, it can be made again. There are very few times when something is not able to be fixed.” Stephan said he can customize antique pieces and repair diamond and stone settings. “You can make a bad stone look good just by how you set it,” he said. Stephan started by making and repairing watches, but soon got into jewelry sales. He would, however, notice that rings were not built to last and started to

If the jewelry the customer is looking for is not in the store, Stephan can order it for them. “Since the market for diamonds and gemstones is always changing, when customers give enough notice, I can shop for them to find the best prices on large diamonds and gemstones,” said Stephan. “The right stone will always show up when given time to research.” Additionally, the store carries a very large selection of clocks. A wide selection of those are musical clocks with some models playing up to 12 songs. Nonmusical clocks and watches from makers like Seiko can also be found at the store. When asked what the

most popular items in the store were, Stephan said, “Every piece is popular and meaningful to the person buying it. ‘A Loon Story’ is a major hit, feature of Hoot Owl Productions Hoot Owl Productions of St. Germain offers a feature length DVD to compliment their extensive collection of wildlife & nature photographs and CDs. The DVD, “a Loon Story”, shows the behavior of a pair of common loons in Vilas County. The female, who was caught and banded in 1993, has raised nine chicks at the same lake since that time. The film shows the 28 days spent by the pair as they care for their eggs and rear their offspring. The 55 hours of filming was edited to a 104minute feature, with 13 selectable chapters. Certain scenes show the loon interacting with other wildlife, including turtles, blue heron, king fishers and red-winged blackbirds. “A Loon Story” is for all loon lovers, from the casual observer to the loon fanatic, according to owners Robert (Bob) and Jackie Baldwin. Robert is currently working on several other films including “A Loon Story Volume II”. Hoot Owl Productions has received hundreds of e-mails from folks who have purchased the DVD including ornithologist, Laura Erickson, who wrote a review of the DVD. “This is a cosmically good DVD — the kind of thing I wish they’d put on TV sets in restaurants instead of talking heads when you can’t hear the sound anyway. It’s beautifully produced, with no narration whatsoever,

The title of the exhibit represents the unique way in which the Lac Vieux Desert band has followed Ojibwe (Chippewa) traditions throughout the centuries into modern times. The exhibit presents the history of this very special band of Ojibwe Native Americans to the public for the first time. It tells the unique story of their own traditions and culture through their historic photographs, crafts, foods, demonstrations, interviews, memorabilia and regalia. The Lac Vieux Desert Tribal Historic Preservation Office and Lac Vieux Desert Tribal volunteers, led by Giiwegiizhigookway Martin, Alina McGeshick, Joyce Hazen, Roger LaBine, Waabanookwe La Rock, and Rose Polar Martin, have worked hard, side by side, with volunteers from the Land O’ Lakes Historical Society and the NorthernWaters Museum, led by Sandra Brown, Sally Schlack, Mary Bybee, Mary Thomas, and Barbara Nehring, to present this multi-year exhibit. The NorthernWaters Museum is open Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 3

p.m. through Labor Day weekend. It will also be open in September through Colorama and for special occasions. Check local sources for fall times and call to schedule special tours. New to the exhibit is a photographic display featuring tribal veterans, honored for their patriotism and service to their country. Also new is a presentation featuring the large number of modern tribal programs currently benefiting tribal members. Another major addition has been a second watercolor collage by artist Shirley Surges, showing the area covered by three treaties which have most significantly impacted this Ojibwe band. The painting also graphically demonstrates the tribal rights reserved in those treaties. This collage joins a year one painting by Surges and a handpainted watercolor/collage map, telling one version of the Ojibwe migration story. One of the favorite sections of the display has been the Regalia Room, filled with majestic beaded bandolier

Museum: children’s programs set this summer FROM PAGE 20 hibit feature handmade porcupine quill boxes, both old and new, a selection of beaded and quilled handmade jewelry, and other artifacts handmade by Ojibwe artists, including a special hand-painted drum and other objects crafted and loaned to the exhibit by Lac Vieux Desert artist, Waabanookway LaRock. A model of a traditional birch-bark canoe was made for the exhibit by Lac du Flambeau artist Leon Valliere. The exhibit also feature several authentic artifacts loaned by the Lac du Flambeau George Brown Jr. Museum and Cultural Center. Tying the exhibit directly to Land O’ Lakes is a turn-of-the-century shirt, hand beaded by a Lac Vieux Deserts tribal member. Honoring Land O’ Lakes entrepreneur Julius Dickman, the shirt is loaned to the exhibit by Phyllis Gottman and the Dickman family. A special children’s section features a partially constructed wigwam, showing construction materials and meth-

ods. Children will also find a demonstration traditional canoe that they can actually sit in, as well as an array of coloring sheets featuring local animals with their Ojibwe (Chippewa) names. Expanding the exhibit to the museum grounds, an outdoor exhibit features an Ojibwe birchbark wigwam, a traditional fire pit and traditional Ojibwe plants, including a special Three Sisters Garden. The Three Sisters garden exemplifies the way symbiotic plants can provide a magnificent, healthy garden in a small space. The Ojibwe Three Sisters Garden features three plant species planted several weeks apart, each helping the others to grow and flourish. Information on how to plant such a garden is available from the museum or from the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission. In addition to the exhibit, many programs scheduled for this year will carry out an educational theme. Programs and demonstrations will include the following: a description of

the maple sugaring process and a presentation on maple sugar foods; a program on construction, performance, and spirituality of the Native American flute; a demonstration of crafting with individual stitch, as well as loom beadwork; a demonstration of processing wild rice; and a demonstration of the tradition of powwow dancing. Special children’s programs are scheduled for June, July and August. These and other parts of the exhibit tell the cultural story of the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians. Sno-Eagles set trail fundraiser at Sportsmen’s The Sno-Eagles Snowmobile Club will have a benefit picnic at Sportsmen’s Chalet on Old Highway 70 between Eagle River and St. Germain Saturday, July 12. The benefit will last from 1 to 6 p.m. and will feature picnic-style food and raffles. Proceeds from the event will be used to purchase a new groomer. Replicas of the worldrecord muskie and hybrid muskie are on display for all to see at Musky Hunter Store of St. Germain. Caught by John Knobla in Lac Vieux Desert in 1919, the worldrecord hybrid muskie is 54 inches long and weighs 51 pounds, 3 ounces. The fish that’s recognized as the world-record muskie was caught by Louis Spray in the Chippewa Flowage near Hayward in 1949. Its acclaimed size is 631/2 inches and 69 pounds, 11 ounces. At least a dozen giant fish are on display at Musky Hunter Store. Most of the replicas on display were made by Lax Taxidermy in Conover. Musky Hunter Store is also the publishing site for the popular Musky Hunter Magazine. This

magazine comes out six times a year, with a circulation of approximately 36,000. The magazine, owned by Esox Promotions Inc., is published to educate and entertain muskie fisherman. Aside from the muskie displays and magazine, Musky Hunter Store carries an extensive line of muskie fishing products, including apparel, muskie release tools and books. ‘Make your own plush animal’ machine part of fun featured at Animals N More Customers looking for a unique souvenir from Eagle River can find one at Animals N More. A broad array of stuffed animals are available at Animals N More, and patrons can even make their own animal. “We are very excited about Animaland — a fun machine used to stuff your very own plush animal. The smile it brings to faces of all ages as a family member creates their own animal is great to see,” said owner Debra Preuhs. “Customers pick what type of animal they want, then take a star, make a wish, and put that star in their animal and stuff it with love.” After all that, customers pick out their own outfit and cradle for their new plush animal. A birth certificate is then given to the stuffed animal at the store. These animals come in many different species, including giraffes, bears, and ponies. Antiques, bar memorabilia offered at Northern Lights Northern Lights Antiques, located at 14218 Himanka Hill Rd. south of Bruce Crossing, Mich., is in the pristine Ottawa National Forest. For more than 20 years, owners John and Beverly Lopez have maintained a unique variety of antiques and collectibles. The drive to the shop is east off of Highway 45 on a blacktop country road lined with apple trees that remind one of the many farms once an important part of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (UP).
