Relay For Life seeking names for honorary chair 13th annual event set for Aug. 3 and 4

Plans are under way for the 2012 American Cancer Society Northwoods Relay For Life, and nominations are now being taken for the honorary chairperson. The 13th annual Northwoods Relay For Life is scheduled Friday and Saturday, Aug. 3 and 4, at the Northland Pines High School track in Eagle River. “We are looking for someone who has heard the words ‘You have cancer’ and is willing to share some things about their experience at the Relay kickoff on May 8 as well as the event itself,” said Kitty Sookochoff, event spokesperson. “In many ways our honorary chair becomes the “face” of the Relay and is an inspiration for other people in the community who are currently navigating the same path,” she continued. Applications are available at WERL/WRJO radio station, Horant’s Garden Center, Vilas County News-Review or by contacting Sookochoff. This year’s planning committee will review all applications Wednesday, April 18, and will notify both the person making the nomination and the selected nominee by
the end of April. The honorary chair will be announced at this year’s kickoff, scheduled for Tuesday, May 8, at Eagle Waters Resort in Eagle River. Sookochoff would like to speak to individuals or businesses interested in starting a new team for this year’s Relay. “Our local communities have raised well over $1,000,000 for the American Cancer Society since we began the event in 2000 and we are excited to see what 2012 will bring,” she said. Teams are comprised of eight to 15 people and are often motivated by a co-worker or family member who has experienced cancer, Sookochoff noted. In addition to fundraising, the Relay provides support for individuals and families impacted by the disease, raises awareness of prevention and early detection and offers opportunities for advocacy. Anyone interested in helping with this year’s event is welcome to attend the April 18 planning meeting at 6:30 p.m. at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Eagle River or to contact Sookochoff at (715) 479-2974 or kitty.sookochoff@gmail.com.
Teen nominations sought for character awards YMCA of the Northwoods is seeking nominations for its Teen Character Awards, a program to honor area teens who exemplify the core values of the Y of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility. Nomination forms are available at the YMCA of the Northwoods. The nomination form also may be printed from the website ymcaofthenorthwoods.org. Completed forms should be returned to the Y no later than Monday, April 23. Area judges will select 20
top teens to be honored at the Awards Banquet scheduled Monday, May 21, in Rhinelander. Youths between the ages of 12 and 18 currently enrolled in an area middle or senior high school, homeschooled or attending a local private school and who reside in Oneida, Vilas, Forest, Lincoln or Langlade County are eligible for nomination. Patience and love She has the patience of Job as she sits on her nest — each year. In late March the babies broke through their shells and are huddling beneath the parents who feed them in a nest high above Decorah, Iowa. I watch this eagle family via live cam every year. You can watch her also by going to the Internet ustream.tv/ decoraheagles. Mothers, be they human or bird, are typically devoted, patient, caring, giving and more. My mom was like that. She lived to take care of her children and on the morning she died, her last words, spoken to me, were those of thanks when I told her it was OK for her to go and that we, her three adult children, would be fine. Her job was done. Though I have never birthed a child, I have mothered many young women who I have worked with in therapy, one of whom to this day calls me Mother Mary, though I have not seen her in therapy for years. On Mother’s Day, Bill usually signed a card from our pup and sent him to me with the card tied to his collar. We would laugh, but he was also so sensitive to the fact that there has always been an edge of sadness that he and I did not have children of our own. I see mothers caring for their children in malls, parks, shops — everywhere. Some are patient, tender and loving and say just the right things to their young, touching them lovingly. Some are impatient and appearances would convince an onlooker that they lack the caring we all like to see in a mother. I can only assume their impatience flows from their fatigue — working a full-time job at home and perhaps another at a place of business and raising children add up to total exhaustion. Exhaustion can lead to behaviors we are not proud of. I suspect all mothers are tired. They are on duty 24/7 basically. Pines to host music festival Northland Pines High School (NPHS) will host the Wisconsin School Music Association (WSMA) Large Group Festival Thursday, April 19, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the school’s auditorium. Choirs and bands from NPHS, Northland Pines Middle School (NPMS), Tomahawk High School, Tomahawk Middle School, Medford Area Senior High School and
Antigo High School will perform. Parents and community members are welcome to attend the free performances. Specific program information with group performance times will be available at the event. NPHS choirs will perform Dawson’s “Ain-A That Good News,” Mozart’s “Kyrie Eleison” and “Amanti Costanti” from Le Nozze De Figaro.
The NPMS seventh- and eighth-grade choir will perform “Shenandoah” arranged by Mary Goetze, “Sahayta” by Ben Allaway and “El Vito” arranged by Emily Crocker. The intermediate band will perform “Nordic Sketches” by Pierre La Plante and “Flutopia” by David Schaffer. Large Group Festival offers the opportunity for full ensemble music groups to
perform and be critiqued by three adjudicators. One adjudicator also completes a short clinic with each group following its performance. A May Day Tea Party for children ages 5 through 12 will be held Tuesday, May 1, from 4 to 5 p.m. in the children’s room at Olson Memorial Library, sponsored by the Enchanted Doll Club of the Northwoods and the library. Library plans children’s activities In recognition of National Library Week, Olson Memorial Library will hold a children’s coloring program, part of the You Belong @ Your Library program. The contest is sponsored by the Northern Waters Library System and Culver’s Frozen Custard restaurants. Children ages 11 and younger are asked to read a favorite book and draw a picture about the book. The picture may be a favorite scene, character or anything else that the child chooses to draw. Entries should include the name of the book, author and the child’s name. Coloring sheets may be picked up and dropped off at the library. Drawings will be displayed on the bulletin board in the children’s section of the library throughout the month of
April. Each child submitting an entry will receive a coupon for a free single scoop of Culver’s frozen custard. Coupons will be valid until Monday, Nov. 12, at any Culver’s restaurant. In addition, a drawing will be held for two free Kids’ Scoopie Meal certificates from the entrants. Entries may be placed in the container in the children’s department. Youth conservation camp registration now available Registration forms are now available for the seventh annual Sand Lake Conservation Camp scheduled Thursday, June 21, through Saturday, June 23, at Camp Bird near Crivitz. The camp is open to youths entering sixth through eighth grades in Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Camp fee is $55 for registrations postmarked by Friday, June 1, and will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Space is limited. Cost for reservations made after that date will be $70, however registrations will not be accepted after Friday, June 8. The fee includes room, board, activities and programs. Camp programs will

Friedel-Hunt: We all know mothers — they are our neighbors, friends and perhaps you are one yourself. What we do not know, unless we are a mother, is the thousands of times each day they think of their young, no matter how old those young ones are. We will never know what a mother suffers when she loses a child be it a miscarriage or a child of 60 years. Motherhood is a relationship unlike any other.
FORENSICS COMPETITION — Members of the Northland Pines Middle School (NPMS) forensics team recently competed in their final competitions at Laona and Tomahawk middle schools, the culmination of their season. The 33-member team, under the
fancy attire for the occasion, including hats and gloves. They are also asked to take their favorite stuffed animal or doll dressed for the tea party as well.
Youth Art Month exhibitors will be held Thursday, April 12, from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. The public is welcome to attend. Artwork will be on display and prizes will be awarded to the winners. YMCA offers free program for adult cancer survivors YMCA of the Northwoods recently launched LIVESTRONG®, a physical activity and well-being program designed to help adult cancer survivors who have become deconditioned from recent cancer treatments rebuild strength and stamina. The 12-week program will be free and a new session will begin in May. The YMCA is working closely with Ministry Saint Mary’s Hospital James Beck Cancer Center, Ministry
Rehabilitation Services and the American Cancer Society to bring this program to the community. The research-based program is designed to provide people affected by cancer a safe, supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person. “The YMCA of the Northwoods, in addition to the physical benefits of the program,

United Way applications sought for 2013 funding Northwoods United Way has announced it has begun its application process for organizations and groups interested in applying for funds for 2013. Current partner agencies have been sent the 2013 grant application. Ministry highlights need for advance directives In recognition of Monday, April 16, as National Healthcare Decisions Day, Ministry Health Care has highlighted the importance of healthcare advance directives. Ministry Health Care offers workshops at local health facilities to assist individuals interested in completing the directive forms. According to information provided by Ministry Health Care, there are more options in health-care technology than ever before but a patient may not always be physically able to choose a treatment option, so it is important to
plan in advance. The planning process begins with each person knowing their health condition and how they may change. It is important to choose a health-care agent who understands your beliefs and views. After formulating a plan, completing an advance directives document will record choices. Nancy and Bill Brissee of Rhinelander participated in the initial training for the Respecting Choices program held at Ministry Eagle River Memorial Hospital. “Bill and I completed our
own documents,” Nancy said. “Feeling satisfied that we’d taken care of our end-of-life issues, we continued to discuss our wishes with each other, our children and close friends.” In March 2011, Bill’s wishes were put to the test when he was diagnosed with severe kidney failure. He declined kidney dialysis as indicated in his advance care directive. “We continued to discuss his wishes regarding health care, assuring each other that his decision would be honored by me,” said Nancy. “Bill passed away one month later at home doing things his way. Since we had talked at length about his preferences, I was able to honor his wishes.” Health officials recommend that advance directives be completed by anyone older than 18 and updated as needed for the benefit of family members. Copies of the advance directive documentation should be shared with a health-care agent, providers and with a person’s records. Women’s club to meet at Reiter The Three Lakes Women’s Club will hold its monthly meeting at the Reiter Center Wednesday, April 18, at 1 p.m. Elections of club officers will take place at the meeting, and Cheryl Kudlaczyk from Eyes For Your Interior in Eagle River will speak on “Decorating on a Shoestring.” Attendees should take a nonperishable item for the Three Lakes Christian Food Pantry.

Andy Offutt Irwin to perform at Reiter The Three Lakes School/ Community Arts Association has announced storyteller Andy Offutt Irwin will perform at the Reiter Center in Three Lakes Tuesday, April 17. The event will begin with
a wine and cheese tasting social at 6:30 p.m. Irwin mixes music, wit and a cacophony of sound into his storytelling. The audience will be treated to Southern charm during the tales of this Georgia native,
according to organizers. Tickets cost $15 per adult and $5 per student and are available at M&I BMO Harris banks in Three Lakes, Rhinelander and Eagle River or at the door the evening of the event.

Resources committee seeks new members, volunteers The Three Lakes Plan Commission is seeking members and volunteers for its Natural/Cultural Resources Committee to represent the community while working on issues presented in the Town of Three Lakes Comprehensive Plan. Some of the issues include invasive species education and management, water quality, historical preservation and awareness and promoting the arts. Buckthorn project The committee is current-
ly partnering with the global science class at Three Lakes High School to remove the invasive species buckthorn from the school woods. This project will run from the end of March through early May. The committee and the school welcome any community members to volunteer for this project. The project can make use of chain saws and other equipment, and needs volunteers to haul buckthorn from the woods and chip it into mulch. Students will work most days during class time, as well as some additional weekend time. Those interested in volunteering for this project can contact Al Votis at (715) 367-0405, oravotis@3lks.net.

According to preliminary election results, challenger Lorin Johnson won a supervisor seat on the Phelps Town Board after receiving 299 JOHNSON votes. Due to a new election system that allows absentee ballots to be sent via mail, the second supervisor seat in Phelps was undetermined as of Monday afternoon.
Although Dorothy Kimmerling holds a lead that will likely see her win the seat, if all seven reported absentee ballots come in for Gene McCaslin, there will be a tie. As of Monday, Kimmerling had 227 votes, while McCaslin held 220. Write-in candidate Wally Beversdorf garnered 182 votes for the position. Lorin Johnson, 58, has lived in Phelps with his wife, Polly, for 15 years. The couple have five children and previously lived in St. Germain. Johnson’s occupational experience includes working in the building profession for 39 years, including working for Lampert Lumber in Eagle River for the past 19 years.
He was a certified general contractor and a deacon of the Sarasota Evangelical Free Church in Florida, and is former chairman of the St. Germain Evangelical Free Church. Johnson is a 1971 graduate of Zion-Benton Township High School, and a 1974 graduate of Allstate Construction College. He completed additional course work at Manatee Junior College, Nicolet College and Lumber Tech University. “I plan to bring new ideas and a fresh perspective to our town board,” he said. “I’m committed to open, accountable and accessible government, as well as fiscal responsibility.”

Marvin Anderson will serve St. Germain as a supervisor on the town board after preliminary r e s u l t s showed him ahead of ANDERSON J a m e s Anderson 294-277 last Tuesday night. Lee Christensen did not file for re-election for the Supervisor 1 seat. Marvin Anderson, is married with two children. He has owned property on Lost Lake since 1996. His occupational experience includes teaching and coaching at a high school for six years. Marvin Anderson is
currently an administrative services contract manager for Liberty Mutual Insurance. He has 33 years of experience with three corporations. His responsibilities included managing staff, contracts, projects and budgets. Marvin also has 25 years of experience in the Army Reserve. He graduated with an associate degree from Northcentral Technical College and a bachelor of science degree in education from UWStevens Point. “My experience serving on a different Wisconsin town board will be valuable to the town of St. Germain, as I enjoyed making a difference on issues affecting fellow property owners,” said Anderson.
Women’s club sets meeting St. Germain Women’s Service Club will hold its next meeting Tuesday, April 17, at the St. Germain Community Center. A social hour will begin at 11 a.m. and lunch will be served at noon. Servers will be Karen Grabowski, Bonnie Kegley, Edie Burtch, Sharon Trudeau, Rose

Mexico medical mission program presented to PrimeTimers group Sue Perry, a registered nurse working at Howard Young Medical Center (HYMC), recently presented a program to the St. Germain PrimeTimers on medical mission trips she has participated in to assist people in Mexico. Perry held up a quartsized jar of rice and beans and explained to the group that she keeps this on her counter to remind her that there are families in Mexico who survive on this amount or less. A resident of Lake Tomahawk, she has been a registered nurse for 37 years. Seven years ago, she enrolled at Concordia University to further her education with the hope of becoming a nursing instructor. Part of the university’s program was a required course, global nursing. The program included traveling to a medical mission in Juarez, Mexico. Although they stayed in Texas at night, the students traveled to Juarez during the day where they examined patients and distributed vitamins and other medications. “One day we heard a lot of noise outside of the clinic. Men with weapons and wearing green uniforms surrounded the mission. We didn’t know if they were ‘the good

guys’ or ‘the bad guys,’ ” she explained. They turned out to be federal soldiers and had surrounded the compound because they had a warning the cartel was going to try to kidnap us.” “The university decided it was too dangerous to send us to Juarez and, for the last four years, we have been going to the Aqua Viva mission in Ensenada, Mexico. We just got back from this year’s trip where we served 370 patients.” Program costs are covered through university tuition, although students are required to pay their own airfare. The university also
accepts donations to help pay for medications, food and other medical supplies for patients. “Mexico has a social security medical insurance for the gainfully employed, of which there are about 50 million people,” Perry said. “That leaves about 40 million people with no services and a small number of people who can afford private care.” The medical care provided by the mission group is followed up by local doctors who donate their services to the poor. Perry has been an HYMC obstetrics nurse for most of her career, participating in more than 5,500 births, and has been a nursing instructor at Nicolet College for the past seven years. St. Germain PrimeTimers meet the first Wednesday of the month at 1:30 p.m. at the St. Germain Community Center.
In recognition of National Library Week this week, Plum Lake Library will hold two public events as part of the You Belong @ Your Library program. The first event is a Basement Book Sale by Friends of the Library. Shoppers will be able to purchase a bag of books for $1 during this sale. The second event is a children’s coloring contest that will run through the month of April, sponsored by Northern Waters Library System and Culver’s Frozen Custard restaurants. Children ages 11 and younger may draw a picture about a favorite book or character. Entries should include the name of the book, author and the child’s name. Coloring sheets may be picked up at the library. Each child submitting an entry will receive a coupon for a free Culver’s frozen custard cone. In addition, a drawing will be held for two free children’s meal certificates from among all the entrants. Final tabulations show a total of $4,211 was raised in the recent trivia contest as final donations and pledges have been received. The team raising the highest amount, $835, was Root for Seuss with members Jim and Jean Joyce, Norb and Bonnie Negley, and Vic and Sandy Summers.
