The annual Relay For Life draws hundreds of participants forming more than 30 teams to walk the track throughout the night to raise money for the ACS. Funds raised allow the society to continue supporting cancer research, its state and national legislative advocacy and many educational and community service programs. This year an estimated 200 cancer survivors will walk the ceremonial opening lap to show the community that cancer can be defeated, noted Relay organizers. Relay volunteers are currently being recruited to help serve on the planning committee. Subcommittees include team recruitment, logistics, corporate sponsorship recruitment, survivors lap and ceremony, luminaria sales and ceremony, and food and entertainment. For more information about the kickoff, to register a team or serve as a volunteer, contact Sookochoff at (715) 617-2974.

Spectacular event slated May 12 to recognize importance of library ___________ SPECIAL TO THE NEWS-REVIEW

A need for solitude It is May — or is it? Down here in southwestern Wisconsin, May seemed to happen in March this year. The temperatures soared, the flowers peeked up through the earth, the dandelions danced on our lawns and the trees began to leaf out. In April we were all mowing lawns and fighting those dandelions. So none of us are sure what May will be like. Will it be like July with temperatures in the 90s? I have a friend who goes to Alaska in April every year and works as a national park ranger through October. She spends half of her life up there and has not seen a Wisconsin spring in 10 years because usually in early April it is cold and far from green. When she arrives in Alaska it is still winter — snow and all. Spring in Alaska is a lot different than it is here. Experiencing it this year made her ask herself (again) where she wants to be next spring, here or there. As we drove through the hills en route to lunch, she was enthralled with the beauty of the hills, green as they are. She had not seen the color spring green in Spring Green for a long time. My friend is in her mid 60s and is a senior member of the group of rangers. She had to take a test last year because she was assigned to a new job for the first time and had to prove that she could handle a kayak by flipping upside down and then coming back up. She liked it so much, she did it several times. Up until last year, she was stationed in the middle of nowhere in a cabin that was frequented by grizzly bears and experienced hikers who stopped for directions or a break. Other than that, she had little contact with people as she hiked each day to various archeological sites to check and catalog. I admire her so much for taking on Alaska’s wilderness. It is just not in me to sit in a cabin surrounded by total isolation. I love solitude but in the comfort of To FRIEDEL-HUNT, Pg. 3B

“Free and entertaining.” “You’ll want to be in the high school auditorium.” Those words are most frequently heard from members of the Olson Library Foundation when they describe the free Spectacular event planned Saturday, May 12, at 6:30 p.m. in the Northland Pines High School auditorium. The Spectacular event is designed to encourage permanent and summer residents to recognize the importance of a new library/community center. The foundation, the trustees and the cabinet have become involved in this event as a way of publicly thanking those who have pledged for given donations to the new library building campaign thus far. They also want to encourage the Eagle River area residents to learn more about why the $3.26 million goal is important to the health of the community. “The ‘Right Before Your Eyes’ campaign says get involved, build for the future, think about those who built the Walter Olson Memorial Library and then about what is needed. We can do this,” said co-chairwoman Christine Caz. A one-hour event in the

Three Lakes High School students return from nine-day trip to Spain ___________ BY JOAN MEEDER FEATURE WRITER

___________

Thirteen Three Lakes High School students recently took the trip of a lifetime to Spain and Morocco, led by Education First Tours and their Spanish teacher, Nicole Losch. The nine-day trip also included the assistance of three other adult chaperones — teacher Kjersten Olson, parent Rose Welch and Jackie Boyer. Even though they’re back, the stories and memories continue. Students, parents, business and the community came together with fundraisers to help defray some of the expenses of this long-anticipated event. The group departed Minneapolis, Minn., for Madrid, Spain, March 30 and spent two nights in the city, visiting the Prado Museum, sampling local foods, shopping on the Grand Via and touring the Royal Palace, Plaza Mayor and Puerto del Sol. The group then took a bus to Toledo with a group of 20 students from the Washington, D.C., area to tour the old section of the former capital and observe paintings. One of the paintings the students saw was “The Burial of Count Orgaz” by Francisco Goya. After seeing Toledo, the students went to Granada and participated in a guided tour of La Alhambra, a Moorish citadel and palace. Arriving in Seville that night, stu-

The most famous was Seville’s Plaza de España, which represented each region of Spain with elaborate art-deco walls, circling ponds, bridges and fountains. The students’ final three days were spent on the Mediterranean coast in a small town outside of Malaga, Torremolinos. The group took a day trip to Morocco in Africa, traveling to the southernmost tip of the

They were bused to Morocco, where a local guide took them through the third-world streets of the old city. “While the whole trip was wonderful — I loved the castles, cathedrals, museums and especially the flamenco and disco dancing and meeting the people from D.C. — Morocco was a lot different,” said Welch. “We saw so many people who were poor, and an obvious caste system,” she said.

Donation supports school group Peoples State Bank recently donated $500 to the Northland Pines Middle School Parent Teacher Student Organization (PTSO), a matching donation for the school meeting the bank’s February Box Tops For Education Challenge to raise $500 in contributed box tops. With this contribution, the

middle school has raised $1,900 so far this year. Throughout the year, the PTSO supports programs for students including Battle of the Books, Journeys Marathon for ONE Club members, transportation costs for field trips, a scholarship for a former PTSO student member and teacher appreciation

activities in May. Currently, Peoples State Bank in the Eagle River Trig’s store has a Box Tops For Education donation box available for contributions. Found on many products, the small certificates are worth 10 cents each. For more information, call the school at (715) 479-6479.

Library: entertainment planned at Spectacular FROM PAGE 1B generation to have a betterequipped library, needs a chance to see what this building is about and a chance, as well, to donate spontaneously, if they wish, that evening,” said Hupperts. Neil Roberts, dressed as a Shakespearean actor, will invite everyone into the auditorium the evening of May 12, where the scene will be set by a PowerPoint program showing Eagle River libraries of the past and scenes of activity at the present library, as well as architectural drawings of the proposed library. “This library will be built without tax dollars,” stressed Roberts. “If every person who uses the library, or could use the library, would donate, we’ll build soon.” A professionally developed 12-minute DVD will be introduced by Roberts as emcee. The DVD demonstrates the need for a new library/community center. That need is highlighted by a Sandra Mettler enthusiastic parody of “Jail House Rock.” Students, foundation members and volunteers will all join Mettler on the stage to bring life to the song.

Choreography has been planned by Northland Pines High School choir teacher Kate Janssen and her students. Hupperts, as Eagle River’s Alex Trebek, will then take over the show with two “Jeopardy” rounds. Students will be featured in one round, with adults taking the stage next. Their winnings will be donated to the Library Foundation building project. The auditorium portion of the program will end with introductions of the major cabinet members, all volunteers, including Caz and Phil Jensen, co-chairpersons of the fund drive; Nancy Schaffer, president of the foundation; and Tina Koller, president of the trustees. Those who attend will be invited to enjoy the music of Bret & Frisk and browse the displays in the commons following the free program. Quincy, the Tail Waggin’ Tutor, and his owner, Nancy Diepenbrock, will introduce children to a library program where children are encouraged to read through befriending a dog. Another table planned for children of all ages will include face painting spon-

sored by the Northwoods Children’s Museum. The historical society has planned an exhibit where attendees can look at earlier Eagle River libraries and examine the layout of the proposed new library/community center. Demonstrating the strong volunteer presence in the Walter E. Olson Library, both current volunteers and Friends of the Library will explain the volunteering process. Other tables will present free (used) books sponsored by the Olson Friends of the Library and free buttons designed by Sandra Slagle. also will include foundation members encouraging signup for the annual library golf outing. The public is invited to add donations to the “Jeopardy” box where stage “Jeopardy” winners will have dropped their “big winnings.” “ ‘Right Before Your Eyes,’ the theme for the building project, will be front and center, as the audience is entertained and informed,” said cochairman Jensen. “We’re coming into the summer season, and we want the resident public to know their support of our library is crucial.”

“Our guide explained that they were not unhappy people. I was glad that our students got to see some of this. I hope it helped them to see the importance of not judging others, including their fellow students, quickly. Students could also reflect on work relationships and how to deal with a difficult employer.” When the group returned to Torremolinos, they walked the streets to the beach and purchased local specialties like fresh sardines cooked on an open fire, squid, calamari, prawns and shrimp. Students also witnessed an unexpected Posada, a Catholic procession during Holy Week, during their last night in Spain. The group flew from Madrid back to Minneapolis and headed back to the North Woods Easter sunday via car. “The best part for me, as a teacher, was seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces after spending four hours shopping, eating and perusing the streets of Puerto del Sol in Madrid,” said Losch. “A lot of the students were saying, ‘Mrs. Losch, I want to live here. I want to study abroad here. I want to come back!’ ” Losch said students enjoyed crossing the Straits of Gibraltar as well, commenting that the whole trip was fast-paced. “It covered a lot of ground and gave my students the chance to see the wide variety of culture throughout the small country of Spain,” she said. The Three Lakes High School students from the Spanish class who went on the Spain trip included Brigette Schmidt, Kelsey Briggs, Leah Mohr, Brooke Welch, Hannah Jakuboski, Peyton Radaj, Bekka Forsythe, Jake Fath, Cathrine Meeder, Karenna Jolin, Zana Lorbetske and Abby Zuelke.

Nicolet’s building trades schedules open house The public is welcome to attend an open house Saturday, May 5, to view the latest home constructed by students in Nicolet College’s building trades program. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the home located at 5617 Riverview Drive on the shore of Boom Lake in Rhinelander. “I was very impressed with the overall craftsmanship the students displayed as they were building the home,” said Jeff Labs, Nicolet building trades and architectural technology instructor. “They did a great job and should be proud of the quality of the construction they put into the home.” Last September students started construction on an existing foundation of an older home that had been demolished and removed from the site. Because of zoning laws and the fact that the foundation is only about 50 feet from water’s edge, they had to construct the new home on the existing footprint.

The two-bedroom, 1,920square-foot home includes a deck that the students built around a tree that has been sculpted by a local artist. Anyone interested in a career in the building trades is welcome to stop by the open house to learn more about the program. Brigitte Parsons, dean of trade and industry at Nicolet College, noted that students are seeing significant opportunities for jobs this year as the home construction business in the North Woods is picking up. The building trades program is currently accepting applications for a home construction project for the 2012’13 academic year. Anyone attending the open house will have the opportunity to obtain an application and talk to Labs about the criteria for next year’s project. Anyone interested in an application but unable to attend the open house may contact Labs at jlabs@nicoletcollege.edu.

Concerts planned to benefit Nicolet scholarship fund The Nicolet Choraliers will present two performances of the annual Nicolet Spring Scholarship Concert Saturday, May 12, at Northwoods Banquet Hall in Rhinelander. The first performance will begin at 11:30 a.m. Midway through the concert a luncheon will be served, approximately at noon, and the concert will continue following the meal. The second performance will begin at 5:30 p.m. and will include hors d’oeuvres. Beverages will be available at cost.

Proceeds from the performances will support the scholarship fund for a Nicolet College student pursuing a four-year degree in a bachelor of arts program. Sponsored by Nicolet College, the Nicolet Choraliers are a group of women singers who sing for various community events. Tickets are $16 and must be purchased by Tuesday, May 8. Tickets are available at Trig’s and K.C. Menagerie in Rhinelander. For more information, call Diane at (715) 369-2172.

Packers to attend Angel event Angel On My Shoulder, a a local cancer support charity, will hold its annual charity golf outing, The Angel Golf Spectacular, Friday, June 8, hosted by St. Germain Golf Club. For the past 15 years, players from the Green Bay Packers football team have participated in the fundraising event. “It’s really a worthwhile cause that I’ve been proud to help support,” said player Gilbert Brown. “We really believe in the work this organization does,” added player William Henderson. “I only wish we could do more.” Henderson’s wish will be granted through a Packer Party planned Thursday, June 7, at The Penalty Box in Eagle River. Six veteran players —

Craig Newsome, Marco Rivera, Dorsey Levens, and Santana Dotson in addition to Brown and Henderson — will be at The Penalty Box to sign memorabilia that will sold as part of the event. The party will run from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. and all six players will autograph purchases from 6 to 7 p.m. “Angel On My Shoulder is an all-volunteer organization,” said Lolly Rose. “All the money raised during this weekend goes directly to benefiting the more than 5,000 patients and families we serve every year.” Angel On My Shoulder was formed by Lolly Rose and her family following the death of Dick Rose, Lolly’s husband, in 1994. While many cancer-support organizations focus on

the medical and emotional needs of the patient, Angel On My Shoulder’s attention centers on the person living with cancer as well as the family members through caregiver support, hospital visits and Angel Camps, retreats for children who have a family member with cancer. “When Dick was sick, I realized that there were limited resources out there to help the family through the challenges,” said Rose. “That’s when I started thinking about what I could do to help others avoid the negatives my family and I had to face.” For more information on the Angel Golf Spectacular or the Packer Party event, contact Discover Mediaworks at (715) 477-1500 or golf@angel onmyshoulder.org.

Town receives new defibrillator St. Germain resident Sharon Trudeau has raised $1,100 in donations for a new automated external defibrillator (AED) for the St. Germain Community Center. Trudeau received donations from family members as well as local businesses and organizations. A member of the St. Germain Women’s Club, Trudeau was attending the February meeting when she had a medical emergency and was transported to Ministry Eagle River Memorial Hospital. “The doctors at the hospital told me I have a right bundle branch block,” said Trudeau. “People born with this condition can have it for years without knowing it. The doctors in Eagle River thought I am one of these people. It came as a complete surprise to myself and my husband.” The cardiac nerves referred to as the left and right bundle branches are the electrical system in the heart and tell the heart when to beat. Following her experience, Trudeau decided to raise funds to donate to the St. Germain Fire Department for another AED that would be permanently placed in the community center. The current AED is moved to the outdoor pavilion during the summer months for use during weekly flea markets and other summer events. “The location of a public-access AED should be where large numbers of people gather, regardless of age or activity,” she said. “Children as well as adults can fall victim to sudden cardiac arrest.” Firefighter John Vojta demonstrated the AED unit

The unit also explains CPR and signals when to do each chest compression. Firefighter Glenn Svetnicka explained that the unit is designed to give a 10-minute head start to treatment in the event of a cardiac arrest, the time necessary for

responders to reach a patient. Additional AED units may be located in public places throughout St. Germain as funds become available. Each unit has a maintenance cost of $200 for replacement pads after each use. Donations to the AED fund may be made at US Bank in St. Germain or to the St. Germain Fire Department. Donations are tax deductible.

EARTH WEEK — Dennis “Dino” Tlachac of Nature’s Niche in Stevens Point recently taught Phelps School students about exotic rainforest animals. The program was funded by the Humane Society of Vilas County, whose mission statement includes educating students about animals. In return, Phelps Elementary students have raised more than $1,000 to date for the shelter through their annual coin drive. Tlachac and Melissa McDonald of the animal shelter showed students a Burmese python weighing more than 100 pounds (above). Phelps Elementary student Kyle Lewis (right) made friends with Tlachac’s iguana. Tlachac began Nature’s Niche LLC Environmental Education Services in 1999, after seeing a big response for such programs and a need for foster homes for exotic animals. —Photos By Sharon Gifford
