Spectacular set to highlight needs for new library “The Spectacular is one way we are informing the public about the wonderful opportunities involved in building a new community library,” said Christine Caz, co-chairperson of the Olson Library Foundation building project in preparing for this Saturday’s event. Caz was referring to the free Spectacular event planned for 6:30 p.m. Saturday, May 12, at the Northland Pines auditorium in Eagle River. “Right Before Your Eyes,” the campaign’s slogan, will become real that evening as the project cabinet rolls out an entertaining hour of information, music and games. The stage will be taken over by students and adults involved in Jeopardy games and a choreographed song “Let’s Build; Everybody Let’s Build,” written to Elvis Presley’s hit, “Jailhouse Rock.” “When we were students and used a library, we never thought about where it came from, but someone had to have supported the building of that library,” said Phil Jensen, the other co-chair of the campaign. “Now we’re at the point in the Eagle River area where building a new library is the economical, sensible action to take, and we owe the next generations the facility that will help prepare them for the future,” said Jensen, who
Pines students hold 2012 clean-up event Northland Pines High School held its ninth annual Earth Day community service project last Wednesday. More than 400 students and teachers from the high school participated in the spring 2012 cleanup event in communities across the school district. While some students raked lawns for elderly (above), other students helped clean up area parks (right). Some of the participants donned T-shirts (below) recognizing the special day out of the classroom. looks forward to a large audience for the free event Saturday and encourages the public to attend. “There will be information to let the public know about why and how a new library can be built without involving tax monies,” Jensen continued. “But the point of the evening is to have fun — to let people know the Olson Memorial Library is alive and working hard to meet the public’s needs, while still enjoying the opportunities the library provides.” Highlighting the evening will be Neil Roberts as a Shakespearean actor bringing the public into the library’s Spectacular. Jeopardy games will be emceed by Bernie Hupperts, and a library project DVD will be shown, followed by a brief dialogue between Caz, Jensen, Tina Koller, president of the library trustees. and Nancy Schaffer, president of the foundation. Following the auditorium event, the commons will be filled with music from Bret and Frisk, as well as free refreshments, along with Quincy the Tail Waggin’ Tutor. Interactive exhibits where families and attendees can experience some of the library offerings also will be featured. “The full price of a new To LIBRARY, Pg. 2B
Plant sale set to benefit children’s museum The Vilas County Master Gardener Association (MGA) will host its third annual plant sale Saturday, May 12, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to benefit the Northwoods Children’s Museum’s Outdoor Kids Garden. The MGA played a critical role in the establishment of the 2,500-square-foot garden at the entrance to the museum in 2010 and members continue to volunteer their time and expertise to maintain it. The plant sale will include a wide variety of potted house and outdoor plants, flowers, herbs and more in a range of prices to fit all budgets. There also will be selections that children may purchase for Mother’s Day gifts. A master gardener will be on hand to answer any questions. All proceeds from this sale will go toward purchas-
ing plants, mulch and gardening supplies for the garden. Open year-round, the garden is a free exhibit that the community may visit during open hours. It is designed to create an educational, fun experience for children who are able to watch plants grow and learn the names of herbs, vegetables and flowers. Other components include a vegetable garden, a zoo garden featuring plants and flowers with animal names, a sensory garden for reflection and contemplation, a butterfly garden which attracts hummingbirds and insects, a pizza garden with herbs used in pizza making and an 18foot tepee used as a trellis. Anyone wishing to donate plants or flowers is welcome to drop them off at the museum by Friday, May 11, or call to make arrangements for pick up at (715) 479-4623.
Reflections By Mary Friedel-Hunt
Risk taking essential A recent trip to Denver reminded me that flying is not really fun. Shoes off, laptop out of bag, crowds, overpriced airport food and more create fatigue. My visit with an old friend, however, made it all worth it. Helen and I go back 38 years. She was in her 50s when we met and is now a wise 94-year-old. What joy it was to see her after several years. We laughed and cried together. She lost her husband four years ago. Mike was a judge who married Bill and me. I said to Helen as we shared, “Helen, you talk, I listen, we cry. Then I talk, you listen, we cry. And then we laugh at something.” At one point in our visit, I was setting up her computer so she could watch the eagle nest in Decorah, Iowa. Though she is pretty good with a computer, it was easier if I just set it for her. As we sat watching it one day, I pointed out just how close to the edge of the nest one of the eaglets had gotten. She said, “That is you, Mary, right at the edge, but don’t worry, you can fly.” Helen knows, like all who lost a spouse know, that starting a new life means taking risks, venturing to the edge of a cliff and testing our wings — even at ages 72 and 94. Taking risks is essential if one is to grow. There are To FRIEDEL-HUNT, Pg. 2B

Friedel-Hunt FROM PAGE 1B major risk takers on this planet. They seem drawn to risk. We had a friend who raced motorcycles, jumped out of airplanes and raced cars. Now that he is older, he no longer does that, however. Now someone might have considered us risk takers because we rode motorcycles in our day but this fellow raced them — fast. To me, firefighters, police officers and soldiers are also risk takers. They seem fearless though I imagine they shake in their shoes quite often. Life demands taking risks — a different type of risk. It means speaking your truth when you know it might result in criticism. It means looking inside while others never even glance at their inner life. It could mean taking a job that is challenging but rewarding. For another it might mean quitting a job when the job market is bad, knowing you must find another in a certain amount of time. I have done that a few times and I think I was either lucky or because I was being true to myself, it worked. Taking risks, growing, being ourselves in a world that is trying to change us. For me right now, it means respecting my grief process when the world says, “Move on,” and taking large blocks of time for solitude in order to figure out a new life and not just continue to do many of the things I have always done. For the caterpillar it means going into a cocoon in order to become a butterfly. Mary Friedel-Hunt, MA LCWS, is a freelance writer and psychotherapist in the Madison area. Children’s museum featuring five goslings in farm exhibit The Northwoods Children’s Museum has announced the arrival of five goslings as a part of its Fresh From the Farm exhibit, which will be on display from May 1-31 in the building. The gaggle of geese hatched April 23 and appear to be doubling in size each day, according to program coordinator Margie Rychlock. “These guys have been a little shy since their arrival, but they really come to life when a bit of fresh-picked grass and dandelions are offered,” she said. “So don’t forget to bring some fresh grass on your next visit to the muse-
um.” Plans are under way to include a small pool so museum guests can witness the goslings swim and play as they would if they were on the farm. Named after characters from the board game “Clue,” goslings Professor Plum, Miss Scarlett, Colonel Mustard, Mrs. White and Mrs. Peacock will grace the museum’s animal enclosure. Museum visitors will be able to watch the young geese from outside of the pen, but won’t be able to handle them, said Rychlock. Depending on temperature, it can take between 28
to 35 days for goose eggs to hatch, according to information provided by the museum. The baby chick uses a small tooth on the tip of its beak to peck inside of the egg shell more than 1,000 times before breaking through in its quest to hatch. Although their diet will mostly include grasses, the geese also can eat apples, berries, lettuce, sprouts, dandelion greens, carrot peels, radishes and celery. For more information, contact the Northwoods Children’s Museum at (715) 479-4623 or visit northwoodschildrensmuseum.com.

Area school districts receive $68,865 in library state aid Three area school districts will receive a total of $68,865 in library aid, part of the $32.5 million from the Common School Fund, the only state aid specifically designated for the purchase of materials for school libraries. School districts receiving this aid include Northland Pines, $44,928; Phelps, $4,830 and Three Lakes, $19,107. The amount of aid is based on the number of children between the ages of 4 and 20 living in each school district. This year’s school library aid payment was $26.54 per child for 1,224,689 children counted in the 2010-’11

school census. Funding is down by $1.1 million from last year, resulting in a 75-cent-per-child lower payment. The census total was down by 6,514 children as well. Districts must use Common School Fund library aid by June 30 for the purchase of books, media materials or computer equipment for the school library. “At a time when public education has suffered some of the largest funding cuts in our state’s history, the Common School Fund has never been more important to our public school libraries,” said state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Evers. “The school library is an
essential resource that helps our students develop important skills. Aid from the Common School Fund is often the only funding school libraries receive to purchase new materials.” The Common School Fund was established by Article X of the state constitution as a permanent school trust fund. This program provides loans for projects that include school repairs and improvements, local infrastructure and economic development as well as capital equipment and vehicle purchases. Funds distributed as library aid consist primarily of interest that is generated from those loans.

O’Hatters set annual high tea
As a part of the larger Mudfest event, a screening for “Patriot Guard Riders” is set to begin at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 19, at Vilas Cinema in downtown Eagle River. The film takes the viewer on a journey astride thundering motorcycles to the sometimes silent, sometimes turbulent funerals of young soldiers killed in action. It follows the men and women of the Patriot Guard Riders, a group of motorcyclists originally formed to protect grieving families from members of the Westboro Baptist Church, who gather at military funerals to harass families for allowing their sons and daughters to serve. Outraged by the hate emanating from this fringe group and sympathetic to the families at the most tragic
time of their lives, the motorcyclists escort fallen soldiers from the airfield to the burial grounds, where they form a protective shield around the bereaved families. This small volunteer group of motorcyclists has grown to more than 250,000 members in just five years. The film tells the story of this growing movement while reminding viewers that soldiers are dying and families are suffering. According to event organizers, members of the Patriot Guard will be in attendance at the screening and will be available for a question-and-answer session following the film. Tickets for this, or any other award-winning films presented at the Eagle River Mudfest, are available at ermudfest.com.

Omdahl wins equestrian awards
TAMARA and JONATHON ZAUGG
James, Zaugg are married Tamara James and Jonathon Zaugg were united in marriage Saturday, March 10, 2012, in a sunrise ceremony on a headland overlooking the ocean at Lennox Head, Queensland in Australia. The bride is the daughter of Peter and Helga James of Sydney, Australia. The groom is the son of Chuck and Pam Zaugg of Eagle River. The bride wore a fulllength, strapless satin dress with a beaded empire waist and a side train. She carried a bouquet of white roses and other flowers. Maid of honor was Fiona Luke, friend of the bride. Bridesmaids were the bride’s sisters and the flower girls were a friend and a niece of the bride. The bridesmaids wore knee-length, teal-blue dresses with light-blue empire detailing. Best man was Jeff Zaugg, the groom’s brother. Other
groomsmen were friends of the groom from Minneapolis, Minn. Music was provided by Jeff and Michelle Zaugg. As part of the service, the couple blended sand from Anvil Beach in Eagle River and sand from a beach in Sydney, a symbol of blending their lives forever. The ceremony was followed by a brunch at an oceanside home, and a lunch and dance at a nearby resort. The couple met in Vancouver, Canada, in 2010 during the Olympics. The groom is a selfemployed videographer for Zaugg Productions. The couple is presently traveling around the world on assignment and serving various missionaries through their work. A reception is planned in the United States this December. After the bride receives her visa, the couple plan to reside in Minneapolis, Minn.
Peters receives Kohl award Christina Peters, a German teacher at Northland Pines High School (NPHS), has been honored with a 2012 Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Fellowship Award. Peters is the ninth teacher in the Northland Pines School District’s history to receive this award since it began in 1990. The award recognizes teachers who have demonstrated superior ability to inspire love of learning in their students, have motivated others, and have provided leadership and service inside and outside the classroom. Each year, the Herb Kohl Foundation awards 100 teachers throughout Wisconsin with $1,000 Fellowship Awards, and an additional $1,000 grant is awarded to each Fellow’s school for use in innovative educational projects. The Kohl Foundation Scholarship and Fellowship program was established by U.S. Sen. Herb Kohl in January of 1990, and the Initiative Scholarship was established in October of 1997. To date, the foundation has awarded $7.8 million to Wisconsin educators, stu-
Equestrian Sue Omdahl of Iron River, Mich., who trains and rides at PineRidge Equestrian Center in Eagle River, won the Grand Champion trophy in Limit Hunter Equitation and took third place in the Limit Hunter competition, which is judged on her horse. These divisions are judged on the behavior, performance and form of horse and rider when on flat land and jumping over fences. She received the awards at the annual Wisconsin Hunter Jumper Association banquet held recently in Milwaukee, after a season that included six shows. In her second year of competition, Omdahl rode her 17-hand warm-blooded Upper East Side, “Henry,” in the Limit Hunter classes, with a fence height of 2 feet 3 inches. “That doesn’t sound like a lot, but I’m already sitting about five feet off the
ground on my horse’s back,” said Omdahl. “The Limit Hunter is an exciting category as there are always 20 or more riders competing.” “We had a season filled with beautiful, then truly difficult rounds,” she continued. “When it was very hot, my horse just wanted to take a nap in the stall next to his buddies.” “At one show the temperature dropped 20 degrees overnight, and my horse was so edgy and excited that he was cantering sideways and over-jumping fences” she added. Omdahl also uses her master’s degree in therapy to offer equine-assisted education and psychotherapy in her business, Hope Through Horses, at the equestrian center. She is currently using Henry as a therapy horse, specializing in clients with eating disorders. “As a warmblood, Henry is sensitive, perceptive and
dents and schools. “Education is the key to the future of Wisconsin and our nation. I am very proud of the accomplishments of these students and teachers, and look forward to the great contributions they will make in the future,” said Kohl. In past years, NPHS has also had students named recipients of the Herb Kohl Initiative Scholarship and the Excellence Scholarships. The Herb Kohl Educational Foundation announced the recipients of this year’s awards in March.

tral Idaho. He also worked on numerous wildlife and natural resource projects, including wolf tracking in Wisconsin, collecting DNA samples from grizzly bears and writing strategic, landscape-scale management plans for multiple species. With current population estimated at 800 in Wisconsin, the gray wolf has been delisted as an endangered species and management authority is now controlled by state wildlife management agencies. Wisconsin proposed a hunting season on wolves, with a plan to harvest up to two-thirds of the state population. With these recent changes, Watkins believes this is an essential time to be involved in wolf conservation. “The gray wolf is part of the natural diversity of this region and they provide valuable environmental services to our ecosystems,” he said. “There are a lot of misconceptions about wolves and about living in areas where they exist. Libraries get grants to aid hearing impaired
THE REV. MARY ANNE BIGGS
then enrolled in the Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University, later transfering to Chicago Theological Seminary, Chicago, Ill. As a student pastor, she accepted a call to serve the Nekoosa church in 2006. Continuing her studies, she completed her Master of Divinity degree in 2009 and was ordained at the Nekoosa church. Her husband, John, is a retired elementary school principal and teacher. The couple have two children, John and Mary Cate.
Grants from the federal Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) have been awarded to seven Vilas County libraries to improve services to patrons with hearing loss through the installation of a small hearing loop system at each library’s circulation desk. Receiving the grants are the libraries in Eagle River, Land O’ Lakes, Plum Lake, Phelps, Boulder Junction, Presque Isle and Manitowish Waters. Librarians attended a workshop May 1 to learn about the new technology. A hearing loop, also known as an induction or audio loop, provides a magnetic wireless signal that a hearing aid will receive when it is set to Telecoil, also called a T-coil,l setting. The hearing loop system consists of a microphone to pick up the spoken word, an amplifier to process the signal and an antenna that radiates the
magnetic signal to the hearing aid. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, 36 million (17%) Americans have some degree of hearing loss and as people grow older, the percentage of those in each age category with hearing loss increases. “Most hearing aids have a T-coil, or at least one that is available in the existing hearing aids,” noted audiologist Bill Holzhaeuser. If a patron does not have hearing aids or if their hearing aid doesn’t have a Telecoil, the library has a headset plugged into a loop receiver for them to use. Patrons may contact their audiologist to determine if their hearing aids have a Telecoil.
Northern Waters Library Service applied for the grant on behalf of 29 libraries in eight counties in northwest Wisconsin. The LTSA works with states to distribute funds as administered by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, Division for Libraries, Technology and Community Learning. “We are grateful to the Northern Waters Library Service and the Department of Public Instruction for giving us this opportunity to improve services to our patrons with disabilities,” said Plum Lake Public Library Director Ida Nemec. “We strive to provide equal access to all members of our community and this grant will help us achieve that goal.”

Neighborhood watch now under way; signs purchased from room tax funds The recent meeting to implement a Neighborhood Watch program in St. Germain included presentations from Constable Jack Santerelli and Town Board Chairman Walt Camp. “Neighborhood Watch is working already before the program has been implemented,” said Camp. “One neighbor saw an unfamiliar truck in another neighbor’s driveway and called the sheriff. While the owner of the truck was not committing a crime, a sheriff’s deputy responded to the call.” In that instance, the owners of the house were having some work done, but Camp noted it was good that people are becoming aware and looking out for their neighbors. “This is what the sheriff’s department is looking for, extra eyes,” he said. Camp indicated that between 70 and 75 Neighborhood Watch signs will be
ordered at a cost of approximately $30 each and placed on the corners of roads leading off the state highways. The signs will be placed in similar locations to the spring road-limit signs. “The Town Board will be presented with the request to authorize purchase of the signs from the room tax Fund,” Camp explained. Smaller signs for private roads will cost $16 each, and owners of homes on those roads may purchase signs. Camp indicated that anyone interested in obtaining signs is welcome to contact him to order a sign. “Lake districts will also be asked to help defray expenses for signs in their vicinity,” added Camp. “If you see someone or a vehicle you suspect may be involved in criminal activity, do not try to stop them,” said Santerelli. “Do not confront
them. Get a license plate number and description and call the Sheriff.” “If you are at home, keep a pad by the phone so you can write down your observations,” Santerelli added. “The pad will help your accuracy when you call the sheriff.” The Sheriff’s nonemergency number is (715) 479-4441. Questions regarding the added protection of lakefront properties were unanswered because of the complexity of the problem. “The biggest part of the problem is that people do not know their neighbors,” Santerelli noted. For more information on the Neighborhood Watch, call Camp at (715) 891-2156. The town has created an email database of interested individuals and those who want notification of future meetings. To be added to the database, contact Camp.
Platner presents Antarctica program Mary Platner was the guest speaker at a recent St. Germain PrimeTimers meeting, where she gave a presentation on her travels to Antarctica. Platner has traveled internationally, including trips to Africa, China and other places, and then decided that Antarctica was at the top of her “bucket list.” “Our trip was supposed to take us by air from Buenos Aires, but the eruption of a South American volcano interrupted air travel and we had to spend 19 hours on a bus to get to Tierra del Fuego and the city of Ushuaia,” Platner said. “From there, we took a ship to Penguin Island, Antarctica, the South Pole.” “No more than 200,000 people have ever been to the continent where the estimated population of penguins tops 1 billion,” she explained. “Penguins and seals are everywhere and not afraid of people.” Platner noted to the group that there was only one gift shop on the continent, located
walk up wet slippery rocks to see the islands.” Platner noted that this trip can be very dangerous with icebergs and the threat of heavy seas, illustrating her statement with photos of heavy seas between Chile and the Antarctic Peninsula. Sayner-Star Lake Lioness Club’s annual Stampede convention drew more than 400 crafters and shoppers last weekend. Held in Sayner during the opening of fishing season for the past 15 years, it has grown into a three-day gathering. “It all started as an idea I had while driving and I’ve been organizing it for the last 15 years,” said Mitzi Pockat, Lioness vice-president and Stampede organizer. “The Stampede part is actually a stamp rummage sale at Shepherd of the Lakes Church on the Saturday of the weekend,” Pockat explained. “Stampers fill the social areas of the church building with tables piled high with stamps they have used or no longer want, and the Lioness volunteers guide shoppers to stamps they are interested in.” Classes covering various aspects of stamping were offered throughout the weekend. The Lioness club receives a 15% fee from each stamp or piece of equipment sold. Saturday included 15 rubber-stamp stores offering their products, with representatives offering a Make-Itand-Take-It craft for about $2. This provided a chance for people to experience various techniques and purchase additional supplies. Refreshments were served throughout the weekend, with proceeds going to the Sayner-Star Lake Lioness Club. “Area businesses are start-
of the proceeds locally,” Pockat continued, “We give two scholarships each year, support the Veterans Memorial project, the Plum Lake Pier project, the Plum Lake Library, Boy and Girl Scouts, Vilas County Historical Museum, fire department and ambulance services.” For more information, visit themark-itplace.com/stampede.

Phelps students clean up town for Global Youth Service Day The Phelps Student Council recently participated in Global Youth Service Day after forming a partnership with former Phelps teacher Chris Meier and Nicolet College. Meier, now the AmeriCorps VISTA coordinator at
the college, concentrates his efforts on service learning. He asked the Student Council to participate in the event this year. Members of the Phelps Student Council went downtown April 20 to help clean up parts of the town of
Phelps. Students cleaned up the area around the shores of North Twin Lake and also cleaned up the farmers market area. The experience provided students the opportunity to give back to their community and participate in a world-
wide event. The three-day event took place April 20-22, and millions of young people around the world gave back to their communities by engaging in different types of servicelearning activities.
