Beer Fest set this Saturday Eagle River’s Great Northern Beer Festival (GNBF) has received confirmations from 30 breweries that will pour their products for festivalgoers Saturday, June 9, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the festival grounds of Hi-Pines Campground. Beer Fest President Bill Summers said breweries in Wisconsin and the Midwest brew some of the best beer anywhere. “We are very fortunate to have a strong brewing history in our state and lucky to have so many creative and talented brewers who enjoy sharing their beers,” he said. Summers added that many of the actual brewers themselves come to Eagle River to pour their beer, allowing beer lovers an opportunity to meet the people behind the scenes and ask questions. The brewer lineup will include Angry Minnow Brewery, August Schell Brewing Co., Big Bay Brewing Co.,

Reflections By Mary Friedel-Hunt
A warmer place I am writing this on Memorial weekend and it is a very rainy day. I feel sorry for those who are planning outdoor events, but I am relieved to see rain. Our earth is rock hard, the trees are droopy, and flowers are screaming for water. I hope we see more rain in the next several days. Weather is such an important player in our lives. It determines far more than picnics and camping trips. This past spring has been extremely unusual. A friend told me that the flowers she usually takes to gravesites she visits this weekend bloomed some time ago and she would be taking flowers that normally blossom in June. I have not yet seen a mosquito usually in abundance during most of May. Tomorrow it is to be 95 degrees and humid, leading the powers that be to cancel the Madison Marathon again — because of heat — and consider moving the date to the fall from now on. Most of us understand that global warming is real. Since the early 20th century, the Earth’s average surface temperature has increased by about 0.8 degrees Celsius (1.4 degrees Fahrenheit), with about twothirds of the increase occurring since 1980. Scientists are more than 90% certain that most of it is caused by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases produced by human activities such as deforestation and the burning of fossil fuels. These findings are recognized by the national science academies of all major industrialized nations (wikipedia.com). The Natural Resources Defense Council (nrdc.org) reports that this has been the warmest decade since 1880. In 2010, global surface temperatures tied 2005 as the warmest on record, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Scientists say that the Earth could warm by an additional 7.2 To FRIEDEL-HUNT, Pg. 2B

degrees Fahrenheit during the 21st century if we fail to reduce emissions from burning fossil fuels, such as coal and oil. This rise in average temperature will have farreaching effects on the Earth’s climate patterns and on all living things. Many of these changes have already begun including increased wildfires; severe and deadly heat waves; death and decline of wildlife; the rise of the sea level with increased risk of flooding; and some butterflies, foxes and alpine plants have moved farther north or to higher, cooler areas. These effects are the tip of a very large iceberg. Even the new USDA charts that tell what plants will grow where has been changed to indicate that warm-temperature plants now grow further north. Planting zones are retreating north all over the country. Stanford University biology professor Terry Root wrote, “It is great that the federal government is catching up with what the plants themselves have known for years now: The globe is warming and it

is greatly influencing plants (and animals).” So what does one human being do about this? First, educate oneself by reading reliable sources. Second, support efforts to reduce the burning of fossil fuels and deforestation. We can do this and now is the time. Callie Rohr Memorial race features two days of events Jeff and Marcia Rohr, owners of Rohr’s Wilderness Tours in Conover, are preparing for the eighth annual Callie Rohr Memorial Canoe & Kayak Race to benefit children’s brain cancer research set for Saturday and Sunday, June 9-10. The race will start at the Rohr’s canoe resort and campground at the headwaters of the Wisconsin River in Conover Saturday and activities will end at Eagle River Inn & Resort Sunday. With 14 different race classes, this event is open to all skill levels of paddlers and all types of canoes and kayaks. The full marathon course covers 26 miles, but paddlers have several choices of how long they want to paddle. The paddlers in the pro classes paddle the whole course Sunday. The recreation classes paddle over two equal days. A paddler also can choose to paddle a half-marathon on either day, or there will be a short Paddle for a Cure race Sunday, which will end at the finish line along with all the other racers. The Rohrs lost their daughter, Callie, five days before her 10th birthday in 1999 to a brain tumor after a two-and-one-half-year battle against this disease. Brain tumors are the No. 1 cause of medical death of children. The couple have raised more than $90,000 over the
last seven years and have funded four research programs. This year, the race proceeds will go to Dr. Tomita’s research program at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago, Ill. “Dr. Tomita is doing some exciting research, which is outlined in a pamphlet we can provide,” said Marcia Rohr. “It’s a great feeling to know that our donated monies will make a real contribution to find a cure.” Event schedule The eighth annual event will kick off Saturday with a hot breakfast provided by the Conover Lions Club at 7 a.m. As the race heats begin at 9 a.m., spectators can move to various bridges along the course to watch the racers. The finish of first-day heats will be viewable at River Road, where lunch will be served. Refreshments and music will begin in the afternoon, followed by a dinner, raffles and a live auction at 6 p.m. Dinner will cost $10. Sunday’s event will begin with a pancake breakfast at 6:30 a.m. at Rohr’s Wilderness Tours, followed by the pro start at 7:30 a.m. Recreational racers will start the second half of the marathon at River Road in Conover at 9 a.m. The Paddle for a Cure class will begin at Highway G in Eagle River at 10:30 a.m.
and will last between one and two hours. All the racers will finish between 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at the grounds of Eagle River Inn. Refreshments will be served at Eagle River Inn, along with a pig roast for a cost of $10 after all racers are in at about 2 p.m. There also will be raffles, a live auction and an awards ceremony. Two summerlong raffles will take place, including a 14-foot Kestrel kayak along with weeklong accommodations at Lake Forest Resort, and an autographed quilted wallhanging with a two-night stay at Wild Eagle Lodge in Eagle River and Black Bear Lodge in St. Germain. “This is a exciting, fun event to come watch and is open to all spectators, and don’t be afraid to come and paddle,” said Jeff Rohr. “Each person who participates in this event by paddling or being a spectator is part of this great cause and helps in our battle to find a cure and save our kids from this terrible disease.” Volunteers are still needed for the event. For more information or to volunteer for the event, contact the Rohrs at rwtcanoe.com, info@rwtcanoe.com, (715) 547-3639 or stop in at Rohr’s Wilderness Tours, located at 5230 Razorback Road in Conover.

Raffle to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters Wausau Homes of Minocqua donated a playhouse to be auctioned off for Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Northwoods, (BBBSN) Labor Day weekend. “Big Brothers Big Sisters organization has always been close to our hearts and we are thrilled to be able to give back to them,” said the Wausau Homes team. Due to the strong community support, the playhousefundraiser is planned to be an annual tradition for Wausau Homes and BBBSN. The goal of Big Brothers Big Sisters is to provide men-
torships working directly with children ages 5 to 17 who are at risk due to poverty, parental status, previous delinquency or other extenuating circumstances. “We are very fortunate to have the support of local businesses like Wausau Homes who are willing to invest in the future of our youth providing us a means to raise funds to support these programs and to raise awareness in our local communities,” said Lois Ruediger, board president of BBBSN. The summerlong raffle of the playhouse is a great
resource to help raise muchneeded funds to continue our programs right here in our area. All money raised here stays right here in the North Woods.” The playhouse will be displayed at local businesses and in various parades throughout the surrounding communities this summer. The tickets are $5 each or six tickets for $25 and ticket holders need not be present to win. Tickets may be purchased by calling Kathy at (715) 8922673 or Lois (715) 891-3832.

frontation between Christianity and Islam. Carlson’s book is the result of more than 30 interviews with abbots, nuns, monks and other seekers at monasteries and retreat centers and shares the thoughts of these men and women in their own words as they speak with hope. The Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services announced its decision to renew the Medicare Advantage deeming authority of the Utilization Review Accreditation Commission (URAC) for health maintenance organizations (HMOs) and preferred provider organizations (PPOs) for a term of six years. This new term of approval is effective May 26, 2012, through May 25, 2018. Sugar Camp teacher Meyer to retire after 37 years After teaching at Sugar Camp Elementary School for 37 years, Teri Meyer will retire. She started at the school in 1975 teaching the half-day kindergarten and went on to teach third grade, where she has stayed for more than 30 years. In addition to teaching the students, Meyer has exposed them to community service. Each year she takes her class on a field trip to Marshfield to visit the Ronald McDonald House and Hope Lodge. These are places where families with children who are hospitalized or suffering with cancer can temporarily

stay. The students do chores and take supplies. “This field trip helps the children learn how to give and not just to get,” said Meyer. The project started with an AmeriCorps volunteer at Sugar Camp Elementary School and Meyer has continued it for seven years. Meyer said she’s retiring now to take time to focus on her grown children who live out of state. Her husband is retired and they plan to travel. “I will truly miss teaching and have been blessed to have worked in the most loving family community,” said Meyer.

anyything that suits them, from dressing in costume to experimenting at hooping or Zumba,” said Sadowske. The festival will again feature two stages, one for main features and a second for children to creatively experiment. Tickets cost $7 apiece. Thorn earns $1,000 award from MS Society The National Multiple Sclerosis Society-Wisconsin Chapter will award Three Lakes High School Ross Thorn a $1,000 scholarship for the 2012-’13 school year. Thorn plans to major in English at UW-Stevens Point. His scholarship is one of 645 awarded across the country by the society, and 27 of those were in Wisconsin. The recipients will be honored next month at a ceremony following the Milwaukee and Madison On the Move luncheons focusing on the future of multiple sclerosis (MS) and the latest in MSrelated research. The society’s annual scholarship program helps students affected by MS pursue a
college or technical school education. It is open to high school seniors who live with MS or have a parent who does, and to anybody living with MS who has not yet been to a postsecondary school. Applications are evaluated on financial need, academic record, leadership and volunteer activities; a statement of educational and career goals; and letters of recommendation. Applicants are also asked to provide a personal statement describing the impact MS has had on their lives. In addition to its physical and emotional tolls, MS can have a substantial financial impact on a family. The direct and indirect costs of MS,
including lost wages, are estimated at more than $70,000 annually per household. This makes funding a college education that much harder for many families. “For these families and the hundreds of thousands diagnosed with MS across the country, there are very few known sources of scholarship assistance specially targeted for those whose lives are affected by the disease,” said Wisconsin Chapter President and CEO Colleen Kalt. “MS shouldn’t stand in the way of an education, and we are hopeful this program gives families some financial and emotional relief.” Information about scholarships for 2013-’14 will be

Board approves town roads for winter snowmobile trails St. Germain Town Board met in special session May 22 to decide which town roads would be used as snowmobile trails during the upcoming 2012-’13 season. Following a drive along some of the roads, the board accepted the list of roads with the exception of Burnt Bridge Road which has not been in use since Parkway was added to connect the Highway 70 trail to Highway J. The Highway 155 crossing remains an open issue. Approval of the roads is an annual board task and the list had been submitted previously by the Bo-Boen Snowmobile Club. Board members decided to review road locations including driving certain routes as the road list had not been reviewed in several years. Supervisor Fred Radtke indicated he had never toured the roads and would appreciate the opportunity. Chairman Walt Camp addressed concerns about the open meetings law. “I will take notes along the route and these will become the basis for the meeting when we return,” said Camp.
“We are not doing anything in secret, nor are we making any decisions while we are on the tour. If anyone wishes to ride with us, you are welcome to do that.” Al Clemmensen, president of the Bo-Boen club; Tom Christensen; and Dale Mayo, Vilas County Trail coordinator, accompanied board members. Snowmobile speed limits and the possibility of moving some trail sections from roads were discussed in the meeting. The main concern of safety was expressed by Walt Camp. “It would make snowmobiling more enjoyable if they were off of the town roads. They tend to melt first due to the dark surface of the pavement, and then they have to ride on the asphalt that damages the sleds and the road,” said Camp. “Our No. 1 concern must be the safety of the snowmobilers and vehicle drivers on our town roads.” A resident of Dogwood Drive raised the issue of safety and the amount of snowmobile traffic along that road. Discussion about relocating the trail from Dog-
wood Drive highlighted the issues faced by the Bo-Boen Snowmobile Club when trying to create or reroute the trail. “You can’t have a trail on both sides of Highway 155,” said Supervisor John Vojta. “You would have to clear both sides of the right of way and there isn’t enough right of way to do it,” explained Christensen. A property blocking access to the gravel pit area also makes it difficult to move the trail from Dogwood Drive and there was discussion on the importance of that section of trail. “My family owns the property at both ends of Dogwood and it will remain available for the trail,” said Gary Shambo. “Not all snowmobilers are drunks. Not all snowmobilers do not have insurance and not all snowmobilers go over 15 miles per hour down Dogwood.” The snowmobile club will obtain the services of an engineering firm to review that the Highway 155 crossing will meet all Department of Transportation safety and sight distance specifications.

Jim knows everything about this business and I’m thankful he will be available for Rick and Margaret’s continued success.” “When we took over two years ago, I was very happy Jim decided to stay on and help me learn this business,” said Lovdal. “He has always been willing to explain things to me as problems arose and for that I thank him also. It’s nice to see such a good guy retiring and getting to do what he wants.” Lovdal concluded, “Jim is a quiet guy.
