Hiking, exercise classes offered at Y this summer Weekly hikes will be led by Charlotte Schneider and Marilyn Duschl in the Rhinelander area this summer through the YMCA of the Northwoods, and the Eagle River YMCA introduces a Gentle Senior Exercise Class. “There are many people in the area who would be more comfortable hiking new trails with a group,” said Duschl, active older adult coordinator. “Hiking country trails is safe and beautiful, but can be intimidating to do by yourself, so the Y is offering this opportunity to anyone in the community to hike with us,” continued Duschl. Hikes will be held Wednesday mornings at 11 a.m. beginning June 20. The trails chosen are for beginner hikers and most trails can be shortened or lengthened depending on the group. Each hike will last approximately one and one-half hours. A carpool will leave the YMCA of the Northwoods at 10:30 a.m. or individuals can meet at the trail site at 11 a.m. Directions to the trails are available at the YMCA or oneidacountywi.com. Participants are asked to wear comfortable clothing and to take water. Hikes will be canceled if there is inclement weather. Schedule of hikes includes June 20, Holmboe Nature Preserve; June 27, Cassian

Summer — busy and fun-filled with travel, cookouts and more. We are always glad to see summer arrive. Though we are not crazy about humidity, heat and mosquitoes, most of us take these for granted as we enjoy the relaxing days these months offer. The seasons of our years are like the seasons of our lives. We are born in the spring and reach our fullest and peak lives in the summer, usually our 30s to 50s. For some that might be 75 years, for others 90, and sadly for some it might be just 15 years. Normally we consider the 70s and older to be the autumn of our lives — the time of harvest and beauty. The time that precedes what appears to be death (winter) but which is just another form of life. But summer is clearly the time of productivity and growth, a time of great energy, even for those who collapse into bed at night exhausted from a day of parenting or hard work in some other realm. I am in the autumn of my life. How I got here so quickly will always be a mystery to me. It truly seems like yesterday or maybe a year ago when I was in that high-energy, high-productive summer. But here I am, age 72 and clearly in my autumn. But autumn has always been my favorite season with its harvest, its magnificent colors and cool, bug-free days. I love autumn and always have. So for me to be here, in the autumn of my life, is just fine. I see this chapter as a time to develop increasing wisdom, a time to have greater understanding of life, and a time to give back. Lately the giving back has taken the shape of sitting with those who grieve, something I never thought I would be doing at age 72. However, I also see myself developing some skills in the world of waterTo FRIEDEL-HUNT, Pg. 4B
Exercise class The new exercise class for seniors is targeted for maintaining strength and flexibility. Participants are seated using long rubber bands for strengthening and toning. The teacher, 85-year-old Corinne Lester, has taught this method of exercise for many years. “In the winter, I teach this class down south. I’m happy to be able to bring it to the Eagle River Y for the summer months,” Lester said. Classes will be offered Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m. and will meet at the Phoenix Center, located behind Northland Pines High School at 1812 Pleasure Island Road in Eagle River. There are two classes the Y offers for active older adults. Total Body Senior is a more challenging class and is held Tuesdays and Thursdays 10 to 11 a.m. Gentle Senior Exercise is the place to start for beginning an exercise program or for recovering from injury or illness. For information about pricing, exercise classes, hikes or other active older adult programs, contact Duschl at (715) 362-9622, ext. 118.

Cynthia Devereaux’s life changed with a phone call from her 16-year-old daughter in April of 2011. “Mom, I need you to take me to the doctor,” said Cydney, who was calling from school. Those 10 words marked the beginning of a long and debilitating fight that Cydney and her family would endure for over a year, and it all began with a stomachache. The Three Lakes High School sophomore had been having horrible stomach pains, blood in her stool and constant diarrhea. She had also started to lose weight. “She had told us she had a stomachache, but waited so long to tell us about the other symptoms,” recalled Cynthia Devereaux, looking back at her daughter’s illness. “We took her to her pediatrician who almost instantly arrived at a conclusion — ulcerative colitis.” An inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis affects the lining of the large intestine and rectum. Yet, the initial diagnosis was incorrect, according to a St. Joseph’s Hospital specialist

in Marshfield. “Cydney was given a colonoscopy and an endoscopy. The worst thing was waiting for the results,” she said. “When the doctor met with us, his words were, ‘Her intestines are very angry.’ ”
His diagnosis was Crohn’s disease, a chronic illness that can impact any part of the gastrointestinal tract, from the mouth to the anus. Throughout the spring, young Cydney would face many major issues as her body struggled with the dis-
ease. “She lost 30% of her body, weight and, at her lowest point, was only 89 pounds,” said Cynthia, reflecting on the six weeks at St. Joseph’s. “She had a total of nine blood transfusions during her stay and was fed through a nutrient bag in order to rest her colon. She couldn’t eat any solid food.” Cynthia remembers the helpless feeling of watching her oldest daughter struggle. “She was withering away in front of me, and I couldn’t do anything to help.” Cynthia, who owns and operates A Cut Above in Rhinelander, worked out a schedule with her husband, Chuck, to make sure Cydney was never alone the entire time she was in the hospital. “We live two-and-a-half hours away and would take turns splitting up the week. I wouldn’t work Sunday, Monday and Tuesday. I’d leave Wednesday morning and Chuck would take the rest of the week,” noted Cynthia. When the young patient returned home, things weren’t always easy. “She had no strength. She had withered away to the To CROHN’S, Pg. 3B

Crohn’s FROM PAGE 1B point where she had no muscle tone and couldn’t even walk up the stairs to her bedroom. She watched the Fourth of July parade from a wheelchair because it was too far to walk,” said Cynthia. While the teenager struggled over the next 10 months to regain what she had lost, there has been one positive. “The one good thing out of all of this is that she’s more open and honest with us,” said Cynthia. “She always texts us and communicates a lot more about everything, not just her health.” Cynthia, at times, still blames herself for the havoc Crohn’s wreaked on her child. “If I had tried to understand, we could have avoided such a long hospital stay. When she didn’t act like her normal self, I chalked it up to being a teenager,” Cynthia reflected. Cynthia also feels that her teen’s fear of talking about such icky topics such as the gastrointestinal system also led to the disease taking such a toll. In order to open up the lines of communication as well as education, the Devereaux family has organized a Crohn’s and Colitis Walk this Saturday, June 23, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Three Lakes High School track. Registration for the walk will take place from 9 to 10 a.m. at the track, with prizes awarded for the most monies raised, farthest distance walked and most pledges. House of Grace/Hog Wild, a Christian rock and classic rock band, will provide entertainment from noon to 4 p.m. The goals of the walk to coordinators are simple — raise awareness and money. “You can come at any time, and walk as little or as much as you want,” said Cynthia. “I would love to see a ton of people there just to show support for her. We are hoping it gets people to know what it is and to not be afraid to talk about it.” For more information on the 2012 Crohn’s and Colitis Walk, call (715) 550-1194. _____________ Remember not only to say the right thing in the right place, but far more difficult still, to leave unsaid the wrong thing at the tempting moment. Van Swol completes pastoral program Deborah Van Swol has completed her fourth unit of Ministry Health Care’s Clinical Pastoral Education Program, making her eligible to become a board-certified chaplain. The mission of Ministry’s Clinical Pastoral Education Program is to foster experience-based theological education which combines the practice of spiritual care with qualified peer group reflection. It is designed to prepare a person for specialized spiritual health-care ministries, and enhances the many community-based ministries of its students. As a part of the 17-week program, students spend up to 18 hours a week providing pastoral services in Ministry Health Care facilities, with assigned chaplains acting as mentors. During a weekly sixhour classroom portion, held at Ministry Saint Clare’s Hospital in Weston, students met with an Association of Clinical Pastoral Education supervisor to share and discuss their pastoral encounters. “Chaplains bring the healing presence of Jesus to patients, family and staff,” said Michael Adamson, director of spiritual services. “It is important for Ministry to pro-

WAUSAU — High school students in Wisconsin will be able to earn college credits while still in high school under a new dual enrollment program announced today by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and the University of Wisconsin Colleges (UW Colleges). Tony Evers, state superintendent of public instruction, and Ray Cross, chancellor of UW Colleges and UW-Extension, signed an agreement and announced the new statewide model for dually enrolling high school students in high school and UW-Colleges courses. They spoke at a ceremony at UW-Marathon County, one of the UW Colleges campuses in Wausau. UW Colleges is the UW system’s network of 13 freshmansophomore campuses and UW Colleges online. Evers and Cross said the new partnership would allow students across Wisconsin to access UW Colleges courses in their high schools via classroom teachers and online. The new dual enrollment program would accelerate students’ ability to earn UW credits, reduce the cost of obtaining a college degree and increase the readiness of high school graduates for college or the workplace. The program should be in place no later than the 2013-’14 school year.
“We’re trying to better serve high school students by bringing our courses right into their high schools in a cost-effective way,” said Cross. “We’re committed to making these UW credits as affordable as possible for high school students, their families and the school districts.” “More students need the opportunity to take advanced courses and earn high school and college credits simultaneously,” Evers said. “This statewide dual enrollment agreement is a great way for students to get an introduction to college course work and earn credits before even enrolling in a school of higher education. This will increase the number of students who graduate from high school ready for college and careers.” Dual-enrollment courses will be taught by trained high school teachers who are approved to teach college-level courses by the appropriate UW Colleges academic department, with ongoing support and professional development from their high school and the UW Colleges. The courses will be focused on high school juniors and seniors but will be open to younger students as well. There will also be an online option for students who cannot take desired classes in their high schools.

Many Ways of Peace in downtown Eagle River will host a presentation, “Environmental Destruction: Strip Mining Wisconsin’s Sand Hills,” Monday, June 25, from 7 to 9 p.m. Presenter Jane Schley of Eau Claire is a member of the Wisconsin Sierra Club. Schley will share information about the “new gold rush,” as mining for sand is referred to, and the impacts it can have on the water, land and surrounding communities. The Wisconsin Department of Justice is weighing a penalty to be imposed on two sand mines for large spills discovered earlier this spring in the St. Croix River. According to Mary Jo Berner of Many Ways of Peace, hydraulic fracturing for natural gas and oil has resulted in a little-reported side boom, a sand-rush in western Wisconsin, the site of one of the nation’s richest and most accessible supplies of the high-quality silica sand required for fracing operations. The sand, which is prized for its hardness, large size and round shape, is injected thousands of feet underground to help open up cracks in the rock and release natural gas and oil. Wisconsin is currently home to more than 63 frac-sand mines and 37 processing plants. Many Ways of Peace is located at 217 S. Main St. For more information, contact (715) 480-4697 or manywaysofpeace.org.

Genealogical society to meet at Demmer The Three Lakes Genealogical Society will meet Monday, June 25, at 1 p.m. in the lower level of the Demmer Library to discuss the topic “Members Helping Members.” Attendees should take along any dead ends they’ve encountered in their own research, as members will help each other solve them. Meeting organizers ask that participants take along their research and laptop computers. Anyone interested in genealogy and family history COMMUNITY GARDEN — The Three Lakes Community Garden is set to begin its fourth season. The garden has 61 plots with nine dedicated to growing food for Three Lakes Christian Food Pantry. Last year, more than 700 pounds of food was grown and donated to the pantry. provided by a grant from the Edith Reiter Trust, is now in place. Displaying the shelter were volunteers, from left, Karen Littleton, Rita Strathmann, Sally Kelly, Bev Radford, Vicki Reuling and Jenna Crom. —Photo By Jan Hintz
Library foundation sets annual meeting The annual meeting of the Three Lakes Public Library Foundation is set for Monday, June 25, at 5 p.m. in the lower-level meeting room at Demmer Memorial Library in Three Lakes. All members of the foundation and any other interested people are welcome to attend. The foundation was incor-
porated in 2003 with a mission to enhance the value of the library as a community. According to its founders, the original motivation for forming the foundation was a concern about relying almost entirely on public funds for sustaining the library resource. The foundation formed as a 501(c)3 corporation so that
all donations are tax deductible. The funds raised are used for both current and long-term goals. Last year, the replacement of the lift increased accessibility to the lower level of the Demmer Library. “The next step in accessibility is to replace the doorknobs with lever door handles,” said library board Pres-
ident Vicki Reuling. “If $8,000 is raised, we will also add a push-pad electric opener to the main doors.” The annual meeting will feature a recap of the past year’s activities, along with elections of directors and officers. For more information, contact Reuling at (715) 5468032.

Anderson retires from school district As this school year has come to a close, Three Lakes School District said goodbye to a staff member who’s been associated with the district for more than 25 years. After spending the early part of his school career in Three Lakes, Les Anderson worked in the district for 14 years. He retired from his position as the junior high school language arts and science teacher. Prior to joining the Three
Lakes teaching staff, Anderson taught in Park Falls and Elcho. There is no doubt that retirement will be a busy time for Anderson, who plans to continue serving the community as a member of the fire department, emergency medical technician squad and community volunteer. In addition, he plans to enjoy his garden, catch up on projects and spend time outside in nature.

Tour of Phelps homes set Saturday, June 30 The inaugural tour of historical Phelps homes, hosted by the Phelps Historical Museum, is scheduled for Saturday, June 30, at 10 a.m. The bus tour will include the Christiansen home, the Frankenthal home owned by Steve and Jacquie DeMarco, the Hazen Inn owned and operated by Joel and Janet McClure and the Anderson Family home and chapel owned by the Requa family. Participants must be 18 years and older, and up to 92 tickets will be sold for $25 The Purple Heart recipients with fishing guides and volunteers included, from left, Steve Doyen, guide; Mark Spurgeon, volunteer; Chad Battles; John McDaniel, WWIA founder; Robert Barber; Colin Crawford, guide; Scott Spurgeon, field assistant; Andy
Regenfuss, guide; Marc Broda; Nicholas Colgin; Larry Vold, guide; Robin Vold, field assistant; Louis Dahlman; and Troy Kane, volunteer. —Photo By Sharon Gifford
Purple Heart recipients granted Phelps fishing trip Five Purple Heart recipients from four different states recently were awarded an all-expenses-paid, two-day and three-night fishing trip with local Phelps fishing guides. “This trip was researched, planned and devised by your local hero, Scott Spurgeon, an associate of Wounded Warriors In Action (WWIA) and a Purple Heart recipient,” said John McDaniel, who initiated the WWIA Foundation. The trip was funded through a fundraiser event held at Holiday Lodge in February, which netted $7,500. Sunrise Lodge on
West Shore Drive provided lodging and food at a reduced rate for the veterans. The five WWIA recipients included Robert Barber of Auburn, N.Y.; Chad Baattles of Gretna, La.; Mark Broda of Avon, Ind.; Nicholas Colgiin of New York, N.Y.; and Louis Dahlman of Cibolo, Texas. The group fished with guides Steve Doyen, Colin Crawford, Andy Regenfuss, and Larry Vold on North and South Twin, Big Sand and Smokey lakes. The largest fish was caught by Broda, who landed a 293⁄4-inch walleye. Lax Taxidermy provided a free mount for the fish.
“This was definitely a winwin event — a win for the heroes, a win for the community and a win for the foundation,” said McDaniel. “The Phelps community nailed all three.” A retired Army officer, McDaniel established the WWIA Foundation in 2007 in an effort to assist Purple Heart recipients with recovery by providing outdoor sporting opportunities at no cost. Corporate headquarters are in Apollo Beach, Fla. “Hunting and fishing provide excellent opportunities to assist our wounded veterans in recovering mentally,
physically and spiritually from their war experiences,” said McDaniel. “These veterans bled for our country.” Through WWIA, combatwounded veterans get opportunities they might otherwise never have, including first-rate sporting activities like hunting elk in Washington state, hunting pheasant in South Dakota and fishing off the coast of New Jersey. “The community of Phelps stepped up to the plate and pulled together, showcasing this fishing event and serving the nation,” said McDaniel.
each. The tickets include a luncheon at Sand Lake Pub and the bus fare. Buses will be supplied by Northwinds Bus Service and will depart from downtown Phelps in front of the museum. Tickets are available at the Holiday Lodge, Sand Lake Pub, North Bay Cafe and the Phelps Historical Museum.
