Reflections By Mary Friedel-Hunt

The next step July 4 is a big day in our country. I have celebrated it in many places and in many ways through the course of my 72 years. As a kid, in Park Forest, Ill., we decorated our bikes with red, white and blue crepe paper and entered the village parade. In the afternoon the neighbors put their grills in the center of our courtyard and we all had a huge cookout followed by a water fight. In the evening, we sat in our front yard along with many friends, watching fireworks that were set off in a nearby undeveloped field. In Ouray, Colo., we went to Main Street for the annual parade which went up and down the main drag twice or three times in order to make the parade last longer. The firefighters then dragged out their gigantic hoses and as they fought opposing teams, all spectators got wet — soaking wet. On one trip east, my sister and her family, along with Bill and me, drove north and, without knowing it, ended up in a small-town parade. Once we realized we were not in traffic but rather in the middle of a group of classic cars, we decided to roll the windows down and wave to people as if we were part of the whole scene. It was fun. Everywhere you go on this day, people will be eating hot dogs, grilling brats, watching parades and fireworks and enjoying a day off. Many will plan a family vacation this week. If you go to wikipedia.org, you can find information about various celebrations around the country. All of this to honor not only our independence from another country but our democracy, our country and our freedom. Right now our democracy, our country, is in deep trouble. No matter what your politics are, no one can deny that our democracy and our country are in need To FRIEDEL-HUNT, Pg. 2B

But compromise is the beginning of change in those cases. Healing begins with looking honestly at the problems. How can a physician help a patient heal without Xrays or assessments of many kinds as well as the total cooperation of the patient? I wonder what we would unearth if our elected officials on both sides of the aisle — the media, those in the world of finance, the corporate world, the far right and the far left, and even those connected to various religious groups and all the

rest of us — just came clean? What would happen if we all got honest? What would happen if “we the people” became the top priority, instead of money and power? Only by approaching the serious issues that are plaguing our country with honesty, integrity and with the rights and needs of all the people in mind can we heal this country and get it back on track again. Art world loses its patron saint Center to feature Jane Doud’s work ___________ BY GAY SCHEFFEN SPECIAL TO THE NEWS-REVIEW

___________

The art world lost its patron saint when Jane Doud, a resident of Elm Grove, passed away June 11, 2011. She was a member of the ever-expanding Wheeler clan of Wheeler Island in Three Lakes and she spent summers in her lake house there. A portrait and landscape painter for much of her life, Doud endeavored to capture on canvas the subtle and dramatic changes of light and shadows on pine, birch and water of her beloved North Woods. After attending the Cleveland Institute of Art, Beloit College and Western Reserve University, earning two graduate degrees, teaching design and introduction to art at the University of Missouri and studying extensively in

Europe, Doud married and resettled in Milwaukee in 1952. She was a vital participant in the development of the Milwaukee Art Institute (now the Milwaukee Art Museum) and held many positions with the organization for more than 30 years, including extension director. Doud taught painting classes to adults and children, juried art shows and lectured throughout Wisconsin. She made hundreds of paintings which she showed in exhibits, winning numerous awards. Close to her heart was working as head of scholarships for the Layton Art School. When it closed, Doud helped to organize the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design. Beginning with only 25 students, it now has more than 600. Doud was a unique combination of genteel grace

and North Woods informality. Married for 53 years to Donald Doud, they raised three children and spoiled seven grandchildren. To the end, she was an optimist with an indomitable spirit. When she heard of the formation of the Three Lakes Center for the Arts, she immediately offered input and assistance. She began with a speaking engagement for the group and then organized a bus trip to Milwaukee with hotel, dining and museum tours. Many of Doud’s paintings will be featured for display and sale in the gallery of the Three Lakes Center for the Arts during July. A wine and appetizer reception, open to the public, will be held at the center this Friday, July 6, from 5 to 7 p.m. Her family and many of the Wheeler clan will be in attendance to

Plans for the always popular and eventful 40th annual Artarama River Walk Art Show are well under way, according to event organizers. This year’s show will be held, rain or shine, Saturday, July 21, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Riverside Park on Division Street in Eagle River. Parking will be available at the adjacent Vilas County Fairgrounds. Earlier this year, hundreds of applications were received from artists across the country. Through an intense jurying process, 125 talented exhibitors have been chosen to display works in almost every medium imaginable. “The chosen artists are bringing some of the best creative talent in the country to Eagle River,” said Lori Hahn, Artarama chairwoman. “We are fortunate to be able to present such a diverse and impressive selection of artistic work at this show.” This show features everything from custom-made fishing rods to mosaic glass work to beach pebble jewelry, fine painting and classic turned pottery. “It’s a great place to pick up something special for your own home or an unusual or rare gift,” said Hahn. A tent will feature Young at Art, where children are invited to display and sell their handmade arts and

crafts. A silent auction will offer donated items from Artarama exhibitors at reduced prices, with all proceeds going toward scholarships and artist-in-residence programs. It was in 1972 that five community-minded people gathered together and imagined the possibility of a grand artistic exhibition. That original committee formulated a plan to make a colorful, exciting and entertaining event happen in and for the North Woods. They called it Artarama. Now, 40 years later, the tradition continues. Four dedicated volunteers have worked together throughout the year to organize and make Artarama happen. Artarama remains a nonprofit organization and all proceeds are returned to the community as civic contributions. Continuing to promote education, Artarama awarded two $1,000 scholarships in 2011. Artarama continues to support North Woods libraries, school music and art programs, and the Eagle River Revitalization Program. Entertainment by Patti Katz Black will add to the festive atmosphere throughout the day and picnic-style food will be made available on-site by the Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Nicolet to offer new dental programs Nicolet College will offer two new dental programs — a two-year dental hygienist associate degree and a dental assistant diploma that students will be able to complete in less than a year. Information sessions on the new programs will be held at the college Thursday, July 12, from 9 to 10:30 a.m., 1:30 to 3 p.m. and 3:30 to 5 p.m. in Art Tech Center Room 212. Additional sessions will be held Thursday, July 19, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Nicolet Lakeland campus in Minocqua as well as an evening session Thursday, July 26, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in Art Tech Center Room 212 on the Nicolet campus.

Attendance at one of these sessions is required for acceptance to the fall program. Registration may be made by calling Nicolet Welcome Center at (715) 365-4493; 1-(800) 5443039, ext. 4493; TDD (715) 365-4448; or 711 relay. The college conducted a needs assessment to get an accurate employment picture for the dental field and found that there was “significant demand for more dental-related professionals in the region,” according to Lenore Mangles, dean of health occupations at the college. The dental hygienist program will include 70 credits of coursework.Working under the supervision of a dentist,

hygienists will examine and treat patients and provide education about methods of preventing dental disease by practicing good oral hygiene and maintaining proper nutrition. The dental assistant program will consist of 19 credits of coursework. Individuals in this field also work with dentists as they examine and treat patients. Select courses in the diploma program can be applied to the dental hygienist associate degree if students want to continue their education in the dental health field. Offered in partnership

with the Peter Christensen Dental Clinic in Lac du Flambeau, students may begin taking general education classes during the fall semester, which will begin Tuesday, Sept. 4. These classes will be held on the Nicolet College campus just south of Rhinelander. Core dental classes will be held at the clinic in Lac du Flambeau with dental assistant classes beginning in January of 2013. Nicolet is currently seeking accreditation from the Commission of Dental Accreditation for the dental hygienist associate degree.

Northwoods Wildlife Center to benefit from paddling event Paddle for the Wild Side, a canoe and kayak paddle event created by business owner Andrew Teichmiller, will be held Sunday, July 15, to raise funds for the Northwoods Wildlife Center (NWC). The paddle will begin at noon at Torpy Park in Minocqua. Kayaks will be available for a small rental fee, with the proceeds donated to the center. “This event is a chance for people to get together for a good cause, meet people and

spend time on these amazing waters we are so fortunate to have,” said Teichmiller. He recently donated an Emotion brand Temptation kayak to NWC which the center plans to use to assist in water rescues. Owner of Chequamegon Adventure Co. in Minocqua, Teichmiller is a member of the NWC board of directors. “The Northwoods Wildlife Center does a lot of wild animal rescue work, responding to calls from border to border in the North Woods,” he said. Teichmiller orchestrated

the event to both raise awareness for the center and to raise money for the purchase of a new or gently used truck for rescues. “The miles have taken a toll on both of our rescue vehicles and this winter we lost one. One rescue vehicle is just not enough in a territory of this size.” As part of the event, the NWC will have a display of several of their resident birds of prey from noon to 2 p.m. For more information, contact the center at (715) 3567400.

He has earned numerous high-level certifications, is an ASE master technician, and has GM World Class certification. Duesing is a graduate of the automotive program at Wyoming Technical Institute.

Chris Kolasa has more than 20 years of experience in the automotive industry. For the past nine years, he taught automotive technology at Western Technical College, serving as the program head since 2010. Kolasa has several specialty certifications, including ASE master technician and ASE L1 Advanced Engine Performance. He’s a graduate of Northcentral Technical College and UW-Stout, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in career, technical, education

and training in the automotive industry. Information will be available on financial aid, scholarships and support services Nicolet offers to students. Refreshments will be served. The auto lab and classrooms are on the ground floor of the Art Tech Center. The campus is located one mile south of Rhinelander off Highway G. Smith opens seal-coating business Eric Smith has opened Asphalt Sealcoating, a new business centered in Eagle River that provides resurfacing of asphalt paving for residential and business property throughout the North Woods. With his specialized truck, Smith provides services by appointment Mondays through Saturdays. While Smith is new to the area, he is not new to the seal-coating business with more than eight years of experience. After marrying Rachel Wells, he began working for his father-in-law, who owned a large paving company in the Baraboo area. “I was in charge of handling

all the seal-coating maintenance,” said Smith. “After eight years of running his crew, I have started my own business in the North Woods.” Smith’s services begin with edging the grass from the sides of a driveway or parking lot, and thoroughly cleaning the asphalt. Then, a hot rubber material is used to fill cracks. “The hot rubber crack filler stays flexible with our environment”, Smith ex-plained. For business parking lots, a commercial high-traffic sealant is applied to the surface and spread using a squeegee broom to ensure adequate thickness and com-

plete coverage. Smith’s goal is to provide professional, affordable and convenient service to his customers. Residential driveways, which have less traffic, are not sprayed. “Our business is rapidly growing simply because we provide high-quality workmanship, affordability and trust,” he said. Smith is offering discout pricing in July and interested individuals are welcome to call and schedule a time for an estimate. For more information or an estimate, call Smith at 1(888) 361-7099.
