North’s call of the wild Lakes of Vilas, Oneida counties are best for seeing loons rive, if they nested, how many chicks were produced, and any potential threats to the nest site. In fall, data is sent to Loon Watch where it is entered into the DNR database and available for management decision-making. Loon Rangers also help protect loons by spreading the word to their neighbors and other lake users to steer clear of loons on nests and on the water.
“Above came a swift whisper of wings, and as the loons saw us they called wildly in alarm and took the laughing with them into the gathering dusk. The shores echoed and re-echoed until they seemed to throb with music. This was the symbol of the lake country, the sound that more than any other typifies the rocks and waters and forests of the wilderness.” “Listening Point” --Sigurd Olson If you are looking for the best place in Wisconsin to hear the wild calls of the common loon, it can be found in Vilas, Oneida, Iron and Forest counties. Volunteers with Project Loon Watch say the latest population survey, done in 2010, showed that up to 30% of the state’s loon population resided on lakes in these four counties — an area blessed with the heaviest concentration of clean, fishable lakes in Wisconsin. It is these lakes that not only attract tens of thousands of fishermen and vacationers each year, but also one of nature’s top fishcatchers — the common loon. Loons once nested on lakes all over Wisconsin, but now are mostly confined to the upper third of the state, especially Vilas, Oneida, Iron and Bayfield counties. Out of the four loon species, the common loon is the only one that nests in Wisconsin. In 2010, volunteers with Project Loon Watch estimated the state’s population at approximately 4,000 adult loons — up from the estimate of 3,3733 adult loons in 2005. Erica LeMoine, coordinator of Project Loon Watch at the Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute at Northland College in Ashland, said the estimated number of loon chicks was 600 during the sixth Wisconsin Loon Population Survey on July 17, 2010. “Thus, 2010 had the
Called a symbol of the wilderness, the common loon is easily identified with its black-and-white checkerboard plumage. Re-
largest adult loon population estimate since the survey (held every five years) started in 1985,” said LeMoine. Past research on where pairs of loons nested found 55% of lakes of more than 20 acres in Vilas County had at least one pair. Oneida County also was found to have about 65% of its lakes populated with loons. Often referred to as a lasting symbol of the wilderness, the powerful, streamlined birds are easily identified with their blackand-white checkerboard plumage. Baby loons, which hatch in June, don’t have the distinctive markings, but will often accompany their parents. The loon is holding its own in what remains of its Wisconsin habitat, but that doesn’t mean there are no problems. People, mostly
well-meaning, harass the birds, and shoreline development continues to eliminate nesting habitat. One of the major causes in the reduction in breeding sites is that loon nests have been gradually replaced by cottages on the inland lakes in Wisconsin. Other shoreline development has further blocked areas formerly used as nesting sites. Because the loon needs to nest very close to the water’s edge, as more shoreline is developed, more birds are displaced. The loon is not built for walking or even standing; its feet are set too far back on its body, forcing it to build nests close to the edge of the water where they are vulnerable to boat wakes and changes in water level. For the moment, though, harassment seems to be the biggest problem. People like

to look at loons close up, in the water or on their nests. Young loons may be killed by boaters, and adults may be frightened off the nest at a critical time. Frightening a loon to leave its nest reduces the chance of the eggs hatching, as well as making them vulnerable to predators. Officials of Sigurd Olson Environmental Institute ask people to take an extra step and talk to those who get too close to a nesting site with a large boat, or the well-intentioned photographer who wants to shoot a picture of nesting adults with their young. Officials urge hobbyists to use highpowered zoom lenses. Harassment of the loon may result in the separation of young and parent. Once that happens, the young may die of fatigue or exposure or may be killed
by predators. Whenever possible, those wanting to get a closer look at the North’s bird should use binoculars or a spotting scope to make observations, according to officials. Loon Rangers For the past 34 years, Loon Watch has engaged an active volunteer network of “Loon Rangers” as its primary tool to collect critical long-term data on loons in northern Wisconsin. Volunteers attend a Loon Ranger Workshop in the spring to learn how to monitor loons, to hear what’s new in the world of loon research, and to meet other loon enthusiasts. Throughout summer, Loon Rangers watch loons on a lake where they live, vacation, or visit often. They record when loons ar-
Call of the wild The loon yodeling on a Wisconsin lake this summer might be the same one that was there 20 years ago. The birds are said to have a life expectancy of 15 to 25 years, and return to the same body of water year after year. The familiar calls of the loon that keep anglers company on many North Woods lakes have been broken down into four classifications. The wail is probably the most frequently heard. A loon will wail when it becomes separated from the chick or if its mate fails to return. The tremolo is an aggressive response given when disturbed by a boat or predator. The yodel is also an expression of aggression and is given by the male during a confrontation. The hoot symbolizes a call of curiosity and happiness. Loons feed primarily on fish, frogs, crayfish, mussels, leeches and aquatic insects. By the end of summer, the young fledglings are capable of feeding themselves. The loon’s favorite food is the yellow perch. In late autumn, loons can be seen congregating on large lakes, ready to fly south for the winter — somewhere along the southern Atlantic or Gulf coasts. Fortunately, residents and visitors to the North Woods are able to enjoy the beauty and calls of loons each summer.

Communities plan summer events Area chambers of commerce and organizations plan numerous events as added attractions to the lakes and forests that already bring people to the North Woods. The activities planned range from craft fairs and antique shows to chicken barbecues and parades. The following is a list of upcoming events provided by the Vilas County Advertising and Publicity Department. Detailed stories on some of the events can be found in this publication. People should contact the appropriate chamber of commerce to confirm dates and times.
What makes a great-tasting pizza every time? What makes a great pizza? Tradition. The old ways still work, and all good cooking starts with the basics. Quality food starts with the ingredients. Only the finest ingredients should be used, starting from the bottom up, to ensure satisfied customers who come back time after time for the best pizza around. The first ingredient for any pizza is dough. It should be made with flour that is high gluten, the highest quality flour, Amber Durham wheat — the finest of all wheats, cane sugar and only the best yeast. It must be made fresh, never frozen. The dough should then be thrice raised, which takes 36 hours. This ensures the best dough possible. Pear tomato puree is the main ingredient for the next layer, the sauce. Pear tomatoes are one of the best on the market because they contain the maximum of tomato solids. The best of domestic and imported spices would then be blended to create a uniquely superb sauce with a savory taste. In Wisconsin, cheese is a very important ingredient for pizza. All the cheese used should be 100% Wisconsin full cream moz-
zarella, without one gram of artificial cheese, for the fullest flavor. A superb pizza also contains the best meat. The sausage should be 100% meat, 90% lean whole hog, blended with the finest spices for a delectable taste sure to please even the most discriminating of palates. The pepperoni should also be 100% meat, 90% lean, aged to perfection to enhance the flavor, sure to please all pepperoni lovers. Other toppings available must also be high quality. Only the best onions should be used, including Vadalia, Walla Walla, Texas 10/15, and sweet red Bermuda onions. These create a mouthwatering addition to any pizza. Green peppers must be mixed slightly with the sweetest red bell peppers for an appetizing way to liven up a pizza. California black olives also add a savory taste. For a wild appetite, sweet succulent pineapple, crispy vitamin-rich broccoli, tender flaky solid white albacore, or luscious shrimp could be added. At Alexander’s Pizza, these basics have created a tradition of quality food,
which has made the restaurant the most popular pizza stop for residents and vacationers alike. In addition, when all the ingredients are being artfully combined, nobody wants to think of a dirty kitchen or unsanitary conditions. But never fear, for Alexander’s Pizza has the cleanest kitchen you’ll find. In fact, it would even be clean enough to perform surgery. Of course, an aesthetically pleasing environment is also needed to enjoy the full pleasure of eating delicious pizza. Alexander’s Pizza offers a clean, relaxing environment with friendly service and a casual atmosphere. Games and pool are also available to entertain the kids while the food is being prepared to order. Where do you get pizza made with care and concern? Alexander’s Pizza — that’s where. Alexander’s Pizza brings tradition to your table More than 38 years ago, two brothers came to the North Woods seeking summer jobs. Rooted in a strong Italian community in Chicago, pizza was the staple at home and at college. Seeing a lack of pizzerias in the area, the brothers realized a great opportunity existed, and opened their own pizzeria in Eagle River. Sources say the locals at the time looked down on them and called them brash boys from “Chitown.” Today, the pizzeria has become a landmark. Customers come from all over the country to taste the best pizza in the area. Even celebrities have visited Alexander’s on occasion, including professional football players; head coaches from the NFL, NBA and NCAA; hockey players; movie stars; movie
critics; national sports commentators; leaders of U.S. industries; newscasters; and authors. A visiting film critic even gave Alexander’s a “thumbs up.” Although the business opened many years ago, one thing remains the same — the traditional method of making pizza at Alexander’s. The pizza is made the way Grandma Del Cristo said — use the best to make the best. The ingredients used are only the finest, which the owners ensure. The cheese used is 100% fullcream mozzarella, which is straight from the most award-winning dairy in Wisconsin, along with 9month-aged Romano. The soul of a pizza is the crust, which is made with high-gluten flour. Adding flavor to the pizza is the

planes, airplane rides (for a $25 fee and weather permitting), demonstrations, raffles and fly-bys. An area also will be set aside for remote-control

The ninth annual Three Lakes Car Show will be held at Northwoods Petroleum Museum this Saturday, June 16, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event has expanded to better accomodate car owners and spectators, according to museum owner Ed Jacobsen. The show has grown from 46 cars the first year to 110 last year, with more than 1,700 spectators viewing the free display of vintage automobiles. There will be additional parking and six more award categories this year for a total of 15. With two
trophies per category along with Best of Show and People’s Choice, there will be 32 trophies awarded. Cars and other antique and collector vehicles are expected to arrive from all over the North Woods. The event will take on a festive atmosphere, as visitors also can enjoy the music of The Bill Hassey Band during the car show. The Northwoods Petroleum Museum is located on Highway 45 north of Three Lakes. For more information, call Jacobsen at (715) 6170566.

Northland Marine in Three Lakes, a great store for the great outdoors Located in downtown Three Lakes, Northland Marine began as a family owned marine and accessory store with a repair shop. Over the past 35 years, owners Mike and Laura Boers added clothing, swimwear and other outdoor products at the request of customers. Fifteen years ago, family member Roy Sobolik suggested creating a website featuring MinnKota trolling motor parts. Sales took off. Completely self-taught, webmaster Sobolik, now 90 years old, helped Northland Marine become what it is today, the world’s largest MinnKota trolling motor parts dealer. All varieties, models and sizes of MinnKota trolling motors are available, including those featuring iPilot and global positioning system capabilities. As a factory-authorized MinnKota service center, Northland Marine has ex-
pert staff available to assist with technical problems. “Knowledgeable technicians will diagnose your motor issue and get you back on the water,” said Laura Boers. “We also help do-it-yourself customers by providing prepackaged repair kits for common repair jobs.” Reconditioned trolling motors with factory warranties are available. In the marine showroom, water enthusiasts will find accessories such as towable tubes, wetsuits, life jackets, water toys and more for family fun on the water. Northland Marine boasts an extensive selection of fashionable and functional gear and clothing. The store prides itself on offering quality products in a variety of price categories. Infant through adult extended sizes are offered throughout. According to Boers, “The already popular swimwear section has expanded this

year, with new lines providing great fits for all shapes and sizes.” Many seasonal visitors anticipate purchasing their sportswear at Northland Marine each summer. “People will stop our customers on the street and ask, ‘Where did you get that?’, ” said Boers. “There really is something different and unique going on here.” The retail store has also added to its summer footwear. Brands offered include Sanuk, Columbia, Bogs, Chaco, Timberland, Earth Shoes, Merrell and Ryka. Ryka is an active footwear line made exclusively for women, molded perfectly for a woman’s foot. Men’s and women’s sportswear brands featured are Columbia and Woolrich. Functional fabrics offered with ventilation and sunblock options will protect outdoorsmen and -women from the elements while running, biking, fishing and more. The junior department hosts brands like Quiksilver, Billabong and Roxy. Fashionable clothing, dresses and purses are available, including small luggage and other fun pieces. Stylish, high-quality eyewear is available through the Oakley, Native and Maui Jim lines, which include special reading sunglasses and even floating sunglasses. A favorite of visitors is the one-of-a-kind Three Lakes attire. Each year, a new lake shirt design is selected, allowing customers to have the name of their lake featured on a Three Lakes T-shirt. Bait, gifts offered at St. Germain Sport Marine Northern Wisconsin is known for its many lakes available to the public. Fishing and water sports have long been part of the North Woods tradition. St. Germain Sport Marine has been working hard to keep that tradition alive over the past years. Owners Tom and Kim Christensen have created what is now one of the largest dealers of live bait, fishing accessories and water sports supplies in Vilas County. The store is a Department of Natural Resources registration agent, where
you can register all your boats, all-terrain vehicles and snowmobiles. Boats and boating equipment are offered to customers for sale or rent. Fishing tackle, live bait, toys and gifts can all be found at St. Germain Sport Marine. Many different styles of boats are featured, such as Sylvan pontoons and aluminum boats. Johnson, Evinrude and Yamaha outboards, ranging from 8- to 15-HP are available for rent at St. Germain Sport Marine. Fish-n-Ski, ski, fishing and pontoon boats and personal watercraft also are for rent. For motor service or repairs, factory-trained mechanics are available for Johnson, Evinrude and Yamaha motors. Portable docks and boat lifts are offered, along with a selection of boating accessories and ski equipment. Customers also can purchase inflatables and tubes
to pull behind their boats. St. Germain Sport Marine meets fishing needs as one of the largest dealers of live bait and fishing licenses in Vilas County. A complete selection of rods, reels, tackle and accessories are available. Several resident fishing experts are on hand to share their knowledge of local waters and give tips to anglers. Anglers can bring in a trophy fish to weigh. The sport marine hosts a certified scale, and all muskies kept (or released with a photo) can be registered in the Vilas County Musky Marathon. St. Germain Sport Marine is a big-game registration station for fall hunters. The gift department features pottery, North Woods and lodge-like décor items, soy candles, small ornamental water fountains, coffee mugs and, new this year, St. Germain photo frames to hold those special

Memories made at Lick-a-dee Splitz “When I go to Lick-a-dee Splitz, I feel like dancing!” That’s how one young patron described his experience at the Three Lakes ice cream shop. “To me,” said owner Denise Kerns, “that speaks as highly of us as a five-star review. Our top-quality products make me proud, but the staff and the atmosphere are what it’s really all about.” At Lick-a-dee Splitz in the heart of downtown Three Lakes, every customer is greeted with a smile and a genuine desire to make each trip a happy memory. From the music played to the cheerful, unique décor and the friendly staff, everything at Licka-dee Splitz says, “Good times happen here!” Patrons can select from 28-plus flavors of ice cream, a dozen or so varieties of fudge made right on the premises and sampled freely, and an impressive array of chocolates. Ice cream cakes and pies are custom made for any special event. Also featured are novelty and nostalgic candies, toys, gifts and more. To quench any thirst, try the fresh-squeezed lemonade, an all-natural fruit smoothie or one of the classic glass-bottled soft drinks. Up for a challenge? Then the Bidonkadonk is for you! This massive sundae, comprised of 12 scoops of ice cream and four toppings plus whipped cream, nuts and cherries was originally intended as a family-sized treat, but each year dozens of people of all ages conquer the giant treat on their own.

“I don’t recommend it,” said Kerns, “but it’s like a proverbial frozen mountain that some feel compelled to climb just because it’s there!” Everyone who eats a Bidonkadonk, whether alone or in a group, gets their picture taken and posted on the electronic “Frame of Fame” displayed in the store, as well as on the Lick-a-dee Splitz Facebook page. Lick-a-dee Splitz ice cream and treat shop is located right next to the newly renovated Three

Many patrons of the theater and restaurant stop into Lick-a-dee Splitz after dinner or a movie to extend their evening out. WalkAbout carries a full selection of stand-up paddleboards as well as kayaks, canoes and paddling accessories for all
your summer adventures. Kayak and paddleboard demos are held every Saturday at Silver Lake Beach.
Begin your outdoor journeys at WalkAbout in Eagle River The term walkabout was first used by Australian aborigines, meaning a journey one would take during adulthood to rediscover one’s self. Joy and Kevin Nelson opened WalkAbout Paddle & Apparel in Eagle River 11 years ago with that philosophy in mind. WalkAbout can help prepare you for your life’s journey. “We have a large selection of kayaks, canoes and outdoor equipment for those who quietly enjoy the Eagle River area,” said owner Joy Nelson. WalkAbout features several lines of kayaks made in America. The store also carries canoes from Souris River and Mad River. Souris River is available in Kevlar and Carbon Tec. Mad River is stocked in Royalex and rotomolded plastic. Newly added to WalkAbout’s outdoor equipment are this year’s stand-up paddle-
boards. Designed for recreation and exercise, paddleboarding is an activity suitable for all members of the family. For those inexperienced on the water, WalkAbout has staff to help choose the right equipment. WalkAbout also is a local Yakima dealer, providing expert help in finding just the right rack accessories to transport bikes and boats safely. WalkAbout hosts kayak and paddleboard demos every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Silver Lake Beach, no sign-up necessary. Any interested parties wanting details should stop by the store or call for more information. Canoes and kayaks aren’t the only outdoor items people will find for their time on the water. The store offers a selection of life jackets and swimsuits for family members who want to take a dip. Sizes are available for adults, children and
even the family dog. WalkAbout has expanded its selection of children’s books and resource guides essential to a safe and successful outdoor experience. Coloring books, insect guides and maps of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan are just a few of the many items the store offers. While on walkabout, finding the proper footwear is incredibly important. WalkAbout offers a selection of Keen, Merrell, Chaco, Teva, Dansko, Jambu, Think, El Naturalista and Born shoes. SmartWool socks are available in all different styles and colors. The store also offers children’s shoes including Keen, Ugg and Dansko. Those with a sense of style will find that WalkAbout offers a perfect combination of fashionable and functional clothing for men and women. Brands include Patagonia, Mountain Hardwear, Royal Robbins, Horny
Toad, Woolrich, Ex Officio and Life Is Good. Women’s clothing lines include Lole, Roxy, Nic and Zoe, Spanx and Nomadic Traders. WalkAbout also has updated its selection of Lake Girl apparel with new colors and styles for women and children. In order to accessorize your new-found look, WalkAbout offers a large selection of Vera Bradley handbags and Brighton jewelry, wallets and handbags. The store also has an expansive selection of bath and body products by Thymes. Newly added scents are now available in home products such as dish soap and all-purpose cleaner. WalkAbout Paddle & Apparel is located at 622 E. Wall St. in Eagle River. Summer hours for the store are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sundays. For more information, call (715) 479-6631.

The Northwoods Summer Thunder Motorcycle Rally is set for Friday and Saturday, June 15-16, in Minocqua and will feature a variety of motorcycles, local taverns and restaurants, music in the park and scenic rides. The Lakeland Tavern League will present three different Fun Runs with stops along the way. Participants can get booklets stamped at all designated stops on the route for an entry in the prize drawings for each completed Fun Run.
The booklets are now available at participating taverns, the Minocqua Area Chamber of Commerce and Northern Lights HarleyDavidson for a cost of $15. They also will be on sale Friday afternoon at the Summer Thunder Hospitality Booth at Torpy Park. Friday night, “Rattlesnake and Eggs” will perform live music from 6 to 10 p.m. in Torpy Park while riders and locals enjoy refreshments. The five-piece country and classic rock band is from central Wisconsin. Lakeland Area Special
Take A Kid Fishing set Sunday in Conover The Conover Chamber of Commerce will sponsor its annual Take A Kid Fishing Day this Sunday, June 17, at Lake Itsy Bitsy, located in the town park. This free event will begin at 11 a.m. with registration and fishing for all children age 12 and younger. The town park is located on Highway K East. Local guides, made up of chamber members and community volunteers, will assist the children in catching stocked trout beginning at noon. Fishing poles and bait will be provided. Fish cleaning and bagging also will be provided. Fish are donated by the Headwaters Chapter of Muskies Inc., the Conover chamber and several area businesses.
There will be prizes throughout the afternoon. The children catching trout with a gold hook will win special prizes. “Walter,” the largest trout of them all, will bring excitement as the children try to catch it for the grand prize. The largest fish of the day will be mounted by Lax Taxidermy. The taxidermy shop, on Highway 45 between Conover and Land O’ Lakes, has been rating the free mount for many years. There will be drawings throughout the afternoon for door prizes for all the children. Food and refreshments also will be available for the adults. For more information, call the Conover Chamber of Commerce at (715) 479-4928.
Olympics will sell food at the park all evening and the Lakeland Tavern League will serve beverages. Proceeds for the 2012 rally will benefit Lakeland Area Special Olympics. Saturday morning will kick off at Northern Lights Harley-Davidson in Arbor Vitae at 9 a.m. The Lakeland Area Kiwanis Club will have brats cooking on the grill until 2 p.m. The dealership also will have demo rides and a garage sale with obsolete and closeout leathers, T-shirts, clothing and helmets. The rally is expected to attract motorcyclists from all over the state, and the town of Minocqua will have the opportunity to welcome the two-wheeled guests when the bikes parade through the downtown area a little after 5:30 p.m. Saturday. The cycles will gather at the Minocqua Park Complex on Highway 70 West between 4:30 and 5:30 p.m. where the ride into town will start. The bikers will be
able to turn in their Fun Run entries and watch the Minocqua Fire and Rescue Invitational, held at the park from 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Saturday. The music will continue Saturday night as Summer Thunder welcomes back “The Spicy Tie Band” from 6 to 10 p.m. in Torpy Park. “The Spicy Tie Band” is a rock ’n’ roll band from Stevens Point with multiple lead vocals and a multitude of different instruments, including trumpet, saxophone, trombone, harmonica, guitars, keyboards and various percussion instruments. During a band break at 8 p.m., more than $1,000 in cash and prizes will be awarded through Fun Run and raffle drawings. Participants must be present to win. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Lakeland Area Special Olympics. For more information, visit northwoodssummerthunder.com or contact the Minocqua chamber at (715) 356-5266 or bwetzler@ minocqua.org.
