There’s something for everyone at Fountain Blu “Listen to the customer” has been the mantra of Fountain Blu owners Chuck and Sally Kemp, now celebrating their 20th year. Located in Eagle River, Fountain Blu has something for everyone. With selections ranging from Eagle River apparel to a line of Fairy figurines, something new can always be found. Upon arrival in the unique store, the first thing
noticed is the array of wildlife and Eagle River clothing. With what seems like the entire animal kingdom being represented, customers can find T-shirts featuring everything from mountain lions and moose to wolves and eagles. The newly expanded polar fleece section will keep visitors warm on those cool summer evenings. With a variety of styles, colors

and sizes, these sleek fleeces are a beautiful addition to any wardrobe. For the wine connoisseur, new to Fountain Blu are handcrafted wine caddies and cork baskets. These metal pieces of art give wine a unique personality and protect the beverage from any harm. With shapes such as lighthouses and knights, these caddies have been flying off the shelves. The new cork baskets can be a great two-in-one gift for a friend. The bottleshaped basket opens so that a new bottle of wine can be inserted and presented. After the wine has been removed and enjoyed, the remaining cage holds corks and creates a beautiful centerpiece. Barrel, house and other shapes are available. For chefs and barbecuers alike, an assortment of cookbooks and utensils will allow visitors to take the rustic flavor of the North Woods home with them. The unique store features Tervis Tumbler cups that come in five different sizes. The 24-ounce cup has a tapered base so that it will fit in most car and boat cup holders. Each one of these quality tumblers has a lifetime guarantee and comes double layered to stop condensation. If a Tervis Tumbler is dropped in the water, no one is to worry. These glasses float, making them perfect for a summer cruise on the boat. Faerie Glen fairy and angel figurines can be found at Fountain Blu. The
Fountain Blu in downtown Eagle River offers an expanded selection of accessories, in-
collection includes many limited-edition items which will be retired when the allotment is sold. A gift of these popular products is sure to bring a smile. Quality wooden jewelry boxes, jewelry and bath and body products line the shelves of the store. A large selection of framed artwork is available as well as an assortment of metal wall art. These pieces can complete any room. How better to pledge

your allegiance or decorate your house than with one of Fountain Blu’s flags? With tradi- tional selections such as Old Glory to flags with kittens and butterflies, these quality banners instantly make a statement. “Because we’re always changing merchandise and getting new items in, we’ve always got some extras to move into the half-price area,” Chuck said. “You can find a good bargain on items in this section.”
According to the Kemps, Fountain Blu has variety in its heritage. Before the store was opened, a fiveand- dime store occupied the space. The store sold trinkets for no more than 10 cents. The Kemps try to keep that same variety and fair pricing alive with Fountain Blu, as they continue to evolve. Fountain Blu is open daily at 9:30 a.m. Call (715) 479- 6312 for more information.

Family fun thru mini golf provided at Eagle Falls Eagle Falls Adventure Golf is owned and operated by Mark and Karen Cropsey and their children, Zach and Emily, of St. Germain. They have been in the area 14 years, managing vacation properties and rentals. Eagle Falls, located in Eagle River, is in its sixth season. Construction for a new laser tag arena will begin fall 2013. The theme of the course is a 1950s fishing camp. Golfers putt their way around a fishing cabin, a bait shop and a fishing dock. “We wanted to create a mini golf course that was challenging and interactive,” said Mark Cropsey. Golfers can make several choices throughout the course. For example, they can cross the river by bridge or stepping stones, descend the ranger tower by stairs or slide, and many holes have multiple options

for play. The Cropseys are always working hard to change and improve the course. The landscaping is constantly maintained and updated to keep the course fresh and exciting for the golfers. “People discover something new each time they come to the course,” said Mark Cropsey. If you look close, hole No. 5 is in the shape of a giant muskie where you tee off at the tail and putt past the fin rock formations. The muskie’s eye is the cup. “We wanted to build a course that was different from the normal mini golf course,” said Karen Cropsey. “Something symbolic was needed to highlight the area. Therefore, the main rock formation and waterfall features an eagle’s head.” In addition to the cascading waterfalls, the course also includes lakes,
rivers and fountains. “We wanted the water features to really stand out,” explained Mark Cropsey. “The course has 20,000 gallons of water.” This year players will see water trickling down the new water tower feature by hole’s No. 1 and No. 2 into a nearby pond. Also featured is a yellow canoe planted full of beautiful flowers along the side of the course. After finishing a round, golfers have the chance to win a free game on the 18th hole, humorously called “Nature Calls.” The hole features a talking outhouse that has become a fun feature of the course. The outhouse comments on golfers’ shots and then flushes if a free game is won. Any free passes given by Eagle Falls will never expire, so customers can use them at their own convenience. Recently, the Small Business Institute/Small Business Administration/UW System conducted anonymous independent surveys of pizza customers of the 11 major pizza restaurants in the Eagle River area. The survey considered quality of food, cleanliness, service and atmosphere. Alexander’s Family Pizza was rated #1! “Out of 11 restaurants mentioned — Alexander’s was ranked number 1,” an independent was second, and a national chain was third, “both far behind in customer choice.” Alexander’s was found to “offer a quality product at a reasonable price. According to the survey, quality has proven to be of more importance to the customer. Alexander’s has excellent pizza. It uses the highest quality ingredients.” Alexander’s Family Pizza wishes to thank all the many people who participated in the surveys. We truly appreciate the fact that our long-term goal of wanting to be known for quality pizza has been realized.

St. Germain — A premier destination St. Germain serves visitors and area residents as a premier destination. One might even say the community is “Home of the Authentic Northwoods Experience.” St. Germain offers a host of natural resources, recreational opportunities, dining, lodging and shopping for all seasons. The area’s dense forests are marked by trails of all types, making way for hikers, bikers, snowmobilers, skiers and snowshoe enthusiasts. For a safe and scenic bike ride, try out the 12 miles of paved trail on the St. Germain Bike and Hike Trail. Parking is available behind the St. Germain Chamber of Commerce. This trail is part of the Heart of Vilas Bike Trail and connects the communi-
ties of St. Germain, Sayner and Boulder Junction for almost 27 miles of paved trail riding. Just north of town on Highway 155, the Fern Ridge Trail offers hikers a variety of wildflowers, trees and nonflowering plants, making the trail beautiful during all seasons. The trail is only three-quarters of a mile, but has lots of challenging terrain. Three hiking loops of varied length provide pleasure walking on the Awassa Nature Preserve and Hiking Trail on the west edge of St. Germain. In addition, a halfmile nature trail with a printed interpretive guide is accessible to all, including wheelchair users. The Bo-Boen Snowmobile Club, the largest and one of the most active in the state, has built and maintains more than 100 miles of trails in the St. Germain area. Snowmobile rentals are available within the community. St. Germain also is home

The St. Germain Golf Club, rated 4.5 stars by Golf Digest, is challenging and fun. The 18-hole public golf course boasts woods and water. There also are a variety of mini golf courses, gocart tracks and horseback riding facilities close to town. When visitors are done enjoying the great outdoors, there are plenty of things to see and do in the St. Germain area, including a wide array of community events and festivals throughout the year. A flea market is held every Monday through Labor Day from 8 a.m. until
3 p.m. in the community park. Bingo is held every Monday at the community center June through August. There will also be a Farmers Market held every Friday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the pavilion just west of the chamber of commerce along Highway 70. The Farmers Market runs from June 29 through Aug. 31. Celebrate Independence Day in St Germain with a parade downtown starting at 1 p.m., craft fair and children’s rides to follow. Visitors won’t want to miss the best fireworks display in the North Woods at the community park at dusk. Other festivities include arts and crafts shows: Walk in the Woods Art Fair June 9, Christmas in July Craft Show July 5, and Colorama Sept. 22. Fitness events like the Freedom 5K Run July 1 and the Summer’s End Run and Paddle Sept. 8 can also be enjoyed. Join in on the fun at the eighth annual Pig in the Pines Ribfest held Aug. 2-4. This fun-filled event features award-winning ribs, live music every day, family attractions and an allaround good time. It’s about pride at Walking Art Tattoos In 2010, Michael Medrano opened Walking Art Tattoos in downtown Minocqua, featuring tattoos, body piercing, henna tattoos and more. The friendly staff and clean environment make for a welcoming establishment. Offering free consultations, artists guide clients through tattoos from start to finish. Medrano believes their superior customer service sets them apart. “The personal attention we give demonstrates the pride we take in each individual creation,” said Medrano. “We treat our customers as messengers of our art.” Walking Art Tattoos staff enjoys many styles including custom, traditional, realism, and Asian. “It’s the first stop we make when we come to Eagle River,” said one visitor who’s been shopping at Grandma’s Toy Box since it opened four years ago. Why is Grandma’s Toy Box so popular? Owner Kathy Holperin attributes the store’s success to the offering of traditional and hard-to-find items. “I choose games, puzzles, toys and stuffed animals for their educational value and appeal, not only to children but to adults as well,” explained Holperin. “As a result, many say that my products are a big hit with families. And my customers’ suggestions have helped me expand over the past four years.” Outdoor items such as pogo sticks, stilts, riding toys and scooters are popular in summer. Water toys featured are the ball that bounces on water, the flying disc that sails across the beach and water shooters that boaters can use to ambush other boaters. For rainy days and evenings with family and friends, the store’s game department can please visitors and year-round residents alike. “Some of our new offerings this year include Telestrations, Stratego, Quelf, Electronic Catch Phrase and Beat the Parents,” said Holperin, “These
New this season to Grandma’s Toy Box in Eagle River are Sesame Street puppets and
and other new games are added when customers request them. We also specialize in games which are great for rides to and from the North Woods.” Many games and novelty toys are available for customers to try out, a reason why a visit to Grandma’s Toy Box can be an enjoyable and memorable experience in itself. Customers remember trying out the Jack-in-the-

Box, pulling the mice out of the stretchy cheese, balancing the eagle on their finger, and trying to solve the giant Rush Hour game challenges. One of the most interesting sections at Grandma’s Toy Box is the rock department. Rock hounds of all ages are delighted to find rough and polished amethyst, petrified wood, agates and geodes which they can crack themselves to find amazing crystals. The true geologist is thrilled to find rare datolite, peridot, Michigan copper, rough Montana agate and much more. Puppets are a wonderful way to encourage children to share their feelings. The selection of puppets found at Grandma’s Toy Box is
considerable. Visitors may find adorable North Woods animal puppets such as baby bears, a wolf in sheep’s clothing, frogs, raccoons, skunks and rabbits. New this season are Sesame Street puppets and dolls. Children can share stories with Snuffleupagus, Abby Cadabby and, of course, Grover, Bert and Ernie. Open seven days a week, Grandma’s Toy Box is located across from the Vilas Cinema 5. Visitors will be suprised to see such variety in a specialty store. And a toy or game from Grandma’s Toy Box can make one the hit of any party! Call (715) 477-2227 for more information. Customers can also visit Grandma’s Toy Box online at eaglerivertoys.com.
