Communities schedule June events Area chambers of commerce and organizations plan numerous events as added attractions to the lakes and forests that already bring people to the North Woods. The activities planned range from craft fairs and antique shows to chicken barbecues and parades. Family fun thru mini golf provided at Eagle Falls Eagle Falls Adventure Golf is owned and operated by Mark and Karen Cropsey and their children, Zach and Emily, of St. Germain. They have been in the area 14 years, managing vacation properties and rentals. Eagle Falls, located in Eagle River, is in its sixth season. Construction for a new laser tag arena will begin fall 2013. The theme of the course is a 1950s fishing camp. Golfers putt their way around a fishing cabin, a bait shop and a fishing dock. “We wanted to create a mini golf course that was challenging and interactive,” said Mark Cropsey. Golfers can make several choices throughout the course. For example, they can cross the river by bridge or stepping stones, descend the ranger tower by stairs or slide, and many holes have multiple options

for play. The Cropseys are always working hard to change and improve the course. The landscaping is constantly maintained and updated to keep the course fresh and exciting for the golfers. “People discover something new each time they come to the course,” said Mark Cropsey. If you look close, hole No. 5 is in the shape of a giant muskie where you tee off at the tail and putt past the fin rock formations. The muskie’s eye is the cup. “We wanted to build a course that was different from the normal mini golf course,” said Karen Cropsey. “Something symbolic was needed to highlight the area. Therefore, the main rock formation and waterfall features an eagle’s head.” In addition to the cascading waterfalls, the course also includes lakes,

rivers and fountains. “We wanted the water features to really stand out,” explained Mark Cropsey. “The course has 20,000 gallons of water.” This year players will see water trickling down the new water tower feature by hole’s No. 1 and No. 2 into a nearby pond. Also featured is a yellow canoe planted full of beautiful flowers along the side of the course. After finishing a round, golfers have the chance to win a free game on the 18th hole, humorously called “Nature Calls.” The hole features a talking outhouse that has become a fun feature of the course. The outhouse comments on golfers’ shots and then flushes if a free game is won. Any free passes given by Eagle Falls will never expire, so customers can use them at their own convenience. Recently, the Small Business Institute/Small Business Administration/UW System conducted anonymous independent surveys of pizza customers of the 11 major pizza restaurants in the Eagle River area. The survey considered quality of food, cleanliness, service and atmosphere. Three Lakes Shootout, Fly-in to feature boat racing June 23 The screaming sounds of hydroplanes and performance racing boats flying across the water at speeds approaching 100 mph will once again be back on Big Stone Lake Saturday, June 23, as part of the fifth annual Three Lakes Shoot-Out and Fly-In. The 1,000-foot radar run is slated to draw jet, tunnel and drag-racing boats from across the Midwest and from as far away as Canada, for the day-long fundraising event for the Three Lakes Fire Department. Adding to the racing excitement will be snowmobiles running on the water, some pulling barefoot waterskiers. The fly-in portion of the event will include displays of vintage airplanes, biplanes and war birds at the nearby Three Lakes airport. With headquarters at Sunset Grill & C-Store and Anchor Marine & Storage on Big Stone Lake, three miles

tors are welcome to get a closer look at the racing action by anchoring their boats along the racecourse. Now in its fifth year, the shoot-out and fly-in keeps getting bigger, with entries vying for top-gun honors in classes which include highperformance tunnel boats,

hydros, jet boats and specialty drag boats. Local boaters also are welcome to enter and race their own boats with classes for vintage wooden boats, pontoons and other specialty craft. Visitors may get a closeup view of some of the racing boats and see a display of local fire-fighting equipment and emergency vehicles by stopping at Bonnie’s Lakeside restaurant, located on Highway 32, Friday, June 22, from 5 to 8 p.m. There will be music, refreshments, T-shirt sales and raffles, all set up in a beer garden atmosphere, with proceeds also going to the fire department. Racers may pick up preregistration packets or register that evening at Bonnie’s. There also will be a Tour of Lakes at Pine Isle Restaurant Friday at 2 p.m. Registration will open at noon for the 90-minute, nine-lake tour. Lunch will be available from noon to 2 p.m.

PMTT muskie tourney set on Chain June 23-25 The Eagle River Area Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center, along with Professional Musky Tournament Trail (PMTT) sponsors, will host the professional muskie tournament on the Eagle River Chain of Lakes Saturday and Sunday, June 23-24. All PMTT contestants will compete for cash and prizes that could total more than $250,000 over a fivetournament tour. The firstplace angler in the Eagle River tournament will be rewarded with the possibility of $20,000 in cash, based on a full tournament field of 125 teams, two people per team. Other awards in this tournament include the bigfish award ($500 each day for the largest fish caught) and a free entry into the next PMTT qualifying event to be given at the awards ceremony. Concerts in the Park set in Three Lakes The Three Lakes Historical Society is set to kick off its free Concerts in the Park live-music series Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m., beginning June 26 with the Woodland Strings. The outdoor shows will be held at the Cy Williams Park gazebo, just north of the chamber of commerce building on Superior Street in Three Lakes. The concerts attract picnickers and music fans of all ages who are treated to a variety of musical styles in a relaxed setting. The 2012 Concerts in the Park schedule is as follows: June 26, the Woodland Strings; July 3, The Northwoods Brass Quintet; July 10, Hot Mix; July 17,

Rhinelander Area Community Band; July 24, the Hand-Picked Bluegrass Band; July 31, GB’s Dance Band; and Aug. 7, Bret & Frisk. Trees For Tomorrow offering nature programs this summer Trees For Tomorrow will offer several educational programs open to the public this summer. Some programs will be free while others will charge for materials. The free public program series will run Tuesdays from June 12 through Aug. 14 at 7 p.m. in the air-conditioned Education Hall on the school’s campus. Programs will feature a variety of speakers who will discuss many nature-related topics. The June 26 session will be a program on North Woods tree identification by naturalist Joe Panci. Participants will learn some of the tricks to tree identification and how to

use a dichotomous key to investigate the many tree species on campus. Summer naturalists will present family programs Tuesday mornings at 10:30 a.m. from June 12 through Aug. 14. These nature-focused programs are geared toward younger children, but are also designed to appeal to the entire family. Topics will include the world of rotting logs, birds, bugs, reptiles and amphibians, animal tracks and more. Many programs will include a craft project. The cost for each of these programs is $1 per person or $5 per family. The June 26 session will

focus on Critter Catching, and participants will walk to Silver Lake and learn about some water-loving creatures. The Youth Outdoor Adventure Series will run Thursdays from June 14 through Aug. 16 with various nature and adventure programs for youths, ages 8 to 12. Each session will offer a different theme. Most programs will run from 8:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. and the cost will be $25 per day per child and includes programming, swimming at Silver Lake beach and snacks. Participants should take their own lunch.

The June 21 session will be titled Growing Wonders and will feature an exploration of the world of plants. The June 28 program will be called Artful Antics and will feature participants showing their true colors through leaf printing, dream-catchers and more. Youth fishing seminars planned in Eagle River Free fishing seminars for children between age 5 and 13 will be held at Hi-Pines Campground in Eagle River at 6:30 p.m. each Tuesday from June 19 thru Aug. 14. All children will be given information about fishing and prizes at the free seminars. Prizes may include a rod and reel, tackle box, lures and other fishing items. St. Germain — A premier destination St. Germain serves visitors and area residents as a premier destination. One might even say the community is “Home of the Authentic Northwoods Experience.” St. Germain offers a host of natural resources, recreational opportunities, dining, lodging and shopping for all seasons. The area’s dense forests are marked by trails of all types, making way for hikers, bikers, snowmobilers, skiers and snowshoe enthusiasts. For a safe and scenic bike ride, try out the 12 miles of paved trail on the St. Germain Bike and Hike Trail. Parking is available behind the St. Germain Chamber of Commerce. This trail is part of the Heart of Vilas Bike Trail and connects the communi-

ties of St. Germain, Sayner and Boulder Junction for almost 27 miles of paved trail riding. Just north of town on Highway 155, the Fern Ridge Trail offers hikers a variety of wildflowers, trees and nonflowering plants, making the trail beautiful during all seasons. The trail is only three-quarters of a mile, but has lots of challenging terrain. Three hiking loops of varied length provide pleasure walking on the Awassa Nature Preserve and Hiking Trail on the west edge of St. Germain. In addition, a halfmile nature trail with a printed interpretive guide is accessible to all, including wheelchair users. The Bo-Boen Snowmobile Club, the largest and one of the most active in the state, has built and maintains more than 100 miles of trails in the St. Germain area. Snowmobile rentals are available within the community. St. Germain also is home

The St. Germain Golf Club, rated 4.5 stars by Golf Digest, is challenging and fun. The 18-hole public golf course boasts woods and water. When visitors are done enjoying the great outdoors, there are plenty of things to see and do in the St. Germain area, including a wide array of community events and festivals throughout the year. A flea market is held every Monday through Labor Day from 8 a.m. until

3 p.m. in the community park. Bingo is held every Monday at the community center June through August. There will also be a Farmers Market held every Friday from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the pavilion just west of the chamber of commerce along Highway 70. The Farmers Market runs from June 29 through Aug. 31. Celebrate Independence Day in St Germain with a parade downtown starting at 1 p.m., craft fair and children’s rides to follow. Visitors won’t want to miss the best fireworks display in the North Woods at the community park at dusk. Other festivities include arts and crafts shows: Walk in the Woods Art Fair June 9, Christmas in July Craft Show July 5, and Colorama Sept. 22. Fitness events like the Freedom 5K Run July 1 and the Summer’s End Run and Paddle Sept. 8 can also be enjoyed. Join in on the fun at the eighth annual Pig in the Pines Ribfest held Aug. 2-4. This fun-filled event features award-winning ribs, live music every day, family attractions and an allaround good time. “It’s the first stop we make when we come to Eagle River,” said one visitor who’s been shopping at Grandma’s Toy Box since it opened four years ago. Why is Grandma’s Toy Box so popular?
