Local Health Mart Pharmacies offer experienced and knowledgeable staff Serving the health needs of visitors to the North Woods since 1929 are the Health Care Pharmacies. With locations in Land O’ Lakes, St. Germain and on Wall Street in downtown Eagle River, they provide for health-care needs of Vilas County residents and visitors alike. These pharmacies not only offer old-fashioned personal service, experienced and knowledgeable staff and value pricing, but also use state-of-the-art technology and expertise to serve you better. Health Care Pharmacies are locally owned. The managing pharmacist at each location is an owner in the business, personally investing in the business and providing the best customer care. Personal service is emphasized, with a friendly, knowledgeable staff of pharmacists who have more than 100 years’ combined experience. One customer noted, “They even manage to smile over the phone!” The Health Care Pharmacies are now part of Health Mart, the fourthlargest nationwide pharma-

cy chain. Health Mart is a network of privately owned pharmacies joined together to leverage the power and efficiencies of a chain. Being independent allows the three locations to be more responsive to customers’ needs and to support their communities. Health Care Pharmacies feature professional prescription service and will call customers’ doctors’ offices or pharmacies back home for approval to fill a lost or forgotten prescription. Travelers can cure small inconveniences such as swimmers’ itch, bug bites, rashes or sunburns at a local Health Care Pharmacy. A variety of anti-itch and sunburn treatments are available, such as the exclusive Bite and Itch lotion, along with an expanded home medical equipment section. The pharmacies also employ experts on the treatment of outdoor exposure-related ailments. Prescription items in inventory number nearly 2,000 at each location. The store also offers real-time electronic Medicare billing and accepts most insurance. Each location is exten-

Each store is equipped with the best technology, operated by experienced, knowledgeable staff. Convenient at-the-door parking is offered at every location. “We may not have a club like the big boxes, but our prices compete with anyone and we provide service and advice to go with your prescription or over-thecounter items. You will leave the pharmacy with the knowledge to use your product correctly for the best treatment of your condition and fastest recovery,” a pharmacy representative said. What makes a great-tasting pizza every time? What makes a great pizza? Tradition. The old ways still work, and all good cooking starts with the basics. Quality food starts with the ingredients. Only the finest ingredients should be used, starting from the bottom up, to ensure satisfied customers who come back time after time for the best pizza around. The first ingredient for any pizza is dough. It should be made with flour that is high gluten, the highest quality flour, Amber Durham wheat — the finest of all wheats, cane sugar and only the best yeast. It must be made fresh, never frozen. The dough should then be thrice raised, which takes 36 hours. This ensures the best dough possible. Pear tomato puree is the main ingredient for the next layer, the sauce. Pear tomatoes are one of the best on the market because they contain the maximum of tomato solids. The best of domestic and imported spices would then be blended to create a uniquely superb sauce with a savory taste. In Wisconsin, cheese is a very important ingredient for pizza. All the cheese used should be 100% Wisconsin full cream moz-

zarella, without one gram of artificial cheese, for the fullest flavor. A superb pizza also contains the best meat. The sausage should be 100% meat, 90% lean whole hog, blended with the finest spices for a delectable taste sure to please even the most discriminating of palates. The pepperoni should also be 100% meat, 90% lean, aged to perfection to enhance the flavor, sure to please all pepperoni lovers. Other toppings available must also be high quality. Only the best onions should be used, including Vadalia, Walla Walla, Texas 10/15, and sweet red Bermuda onions. These create a mouthwatering addition to any pizza. Green peppers must be mixed slightly with the sweetest red bell peppers for an appetizing way to liven up a pizza. California black olives also add a savory taste. For a wild appetite, sweet succulent pineapple, crispy vitamin-rich broccoli, tender flaky solid white albacore, or luscious shrimp could be added. At Alexander’s Pizza, these basics have created a tradition of quality food,

which has made the restaurant the most popular pizza stop for residents and vacationers alike. In addition, when all the ingredients are being artfully combined, nobody wants to think of a dirty kitchen or unsanitary conditions. But never fear, for Alexander’s Pizza has the cleanest kitchen you’ll find. In fact, it would even be clean enough to perform surgery. Of course, an aesthetically pleasing environment is also needed to enjoy the full pleasure of eating delicious pizza. Alexander’s Pizza offers a clean, relaxing environment with friendly service and a casual atmosphere. Games and pool are also available to entertain the kids while the food is being prepared to order. Where do you get pizza made with care and concern? Alexander’s Pizza — that’s where. Alexander’s Pizza is located on Railroad Street in downtown Eagle River. Call (715) 479-7363, and your pizza will be ready when you arrive. Alexander’s Pizza is the place for you. The ever-popular “PETA — People for the Eating of Tasty Animals” shirts are back, Katie said. New this year are super soft hoodies, embroidered hoodies, athletic shorts, jackets and athletic shirts in long or short sleeve. Arrow Gift Shop is now the area’s exclusive dealer of Old World Christmas Ornaments. More than 100 styles are available to meet many interests. “We have the traditional Santas or snowmen but also carry a large amount of

styles for your special interest,” said Katie. Included are sports, animals, new baby, coffee cups, camping, margaritas, cigars, and occupation-themed ornaments. “We also carry a bride’s, wedding or baby ornament gift set. Beautifully packaged in a white gift box, these sets make a perfect, easy gift,” said Katie. Katie’s love of fashion jewelry is demonstrated by Arrow Gift Shop’s selection of fun jewelry for girls, boys, ladies and men. The shop carries many of the “in” items including a large selection of friendship. Also featured are oneof-a-kind bracelets in turquoise, sterling silver or opal. Arrow Gift Shop offers Mariana jewelry, a fine jewelry company hailing from Israel. Jody Coyote earrings also are popular items. Items may be special ordered. Vietnam Wall plans stop in Eagle River The Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall, a threefifths scale of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., will make a stop in Eagle River this summer. The traveling memorial will be open to the public June 30 through July 4 at the Eagle River Derby Track from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. Opening ceremonies will be daily at 9 a.m., except for June 30 when they will be held at 6 p.m. and July 4 when they will be held at 1:30 p.m. following the Fourth of July Parade. The Eagle River Fourth of July Parade theme this year will honor Vietnam veterans and the parade marshal will be Gold Star Mother June Marheine. The Musky Hunter Store offers quality fishing apparel, including jackets, sweatshirts, hats, fleeces and T-shirts. Muskie lit-

erature also can be found in their extensive collection of books and magazines.

‘Big Fish’ stories and apparel available at Musky Hunter If you want to see big fish while visiting the North Woods, the Musky Hunter Store in St. Germain contains an amazing collection of giant muskies. The store is wallpapered with trophy fish, including replica mounts of world-record muskies. These replicas include the world-record hybrid muskie, caught by John Knobla on Lac Vieux Desert in northern Vilas County in 1919. It measured 54 inches long and weighed 51 pounds, 3 ounces. A replica of the world-record purebred muskie, which was claimed to weigh 69 pounds, 15 ounces and measured 63.5 inches, also is on display. The Musky Hunter Store focuses on muskie fishermen and features an extensive line of T-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets and hats for men, women and children. Muskie fishing DVDs and books, muskie art prints and novelty items are featured, as well as tools to

help you release your next muskie. “We have several new T-shirt and wind-shirt designs that are extremely popular with customers, and a huge hit is the Season 5 DVD of ‘The Musky Hunter TV Show,’ ” said store manager Steve Heiting. The store does not carry tackle or live bait.

Visitors to The Musky Hunter Store can subscribe to Musky Hunter Magazine, the world’s largest publication written specifically for muskie anglers. The magazine’s staff is a who’s who of muskie fishing, and subscribers receive six full-color issues per year. The Musky Hunter Store is located on Highway 70 E.

in St. Germain, across from Spang’s Italian Restaurant. It is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, closed Saturdays and Sundays. For more information, call 1-(800) 236-8759 (23MUSKY), locally (715) 4772178, or visit the websites muskyhunter.com or muskyhuntertv.com.

Holiday antique show set July 7-8 The 20th annual Eagle River Holiday Antique Extravaganza Show & Sale will be held Saturday and Sunday, July 7-8, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at Northland Pines High School. The school is located at 1800 Pleasure Island Road off Highway 45 North, and will be air conditioned. More than 50 dealers from across the Midwest will present quality and di-

versity in the show. Items offered for sale will include furniture, jewelry, clocks, china, lodge and fishing items, mounts, advertising, silverware, folk art and primitives, Indian artifacts, pottery, glassware, stone ware, dolls, baskets, postcards, banks and holiday items. Professional dealers from across the Midwest will be on hand to discuss items and buy or trade. In addition, Mary Lou Gates will be

on site offering crystal and china repair services while participants wait. Food will be served by members of the youth group of St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church. A $4.50 admission fee will allow individuals to attend all three days. Children younger than 16 will be admitted free. Free parking is available behind the school. For more information, call Steve Bina at (608) 3853598.

The closing ceremony at the traveling memorial will be after the fireworks display on the Fourth of July. The Vietnam Traveling Memorial Wall stands 6 feet tall at the center and covers almost 300 feet from end to end. This traveling memorial stands as a reminder of the great sacrifices made during the Vietnam War. It was made for the purpose of helping heal and rekindle friendships and to allow people the opportunity to visit loved ones in their hometown who otherwise may not be able to make the trip to Washington, D.C. The traveling wall will be escorted through downtown Eagle River Thursday, June 28, shortly after 12:30 p.m.

VACATION WEEK

Alexander’s Pizza brings tradition to your table More than 38 years ago, two brothers came to the North Woods seeking summer jobs. Rooted in a strong Italian community in Chicago, pizza was the staple at home and at college. Seeing a lack of pizzerias in the area, the brothers realized a great opportunity existed and opened their own pizzeria in Eagle River. Sources say the locals at the time looked down on them and called them brash boys from “Chi-town.” Today, the pizzeria has become a landmark. Customers come from all over the country to taste the best pizza in the area. Even celebrities have visited Alexander’s on occasion, including professional football players; head coaches from the NFL, NBA and NCAA; hockey players; movie stars; movie critics; national sports commentators; leaders of U.S. industries; newscasters; and authors. A visiting film critic even gave Alexander’s a “thumbs up.” Although the business opened many years ago, one thing remains the same — the traditional method of making pizza at Alexander’s. The pizza is made the way Grandma Del Cristo said — use the best to make the best. The ingredients used are only the finest, which the owners ensure. The cheese used is 100% full-cream mozzarella, which is

straight from the most award-winning dairy in Wisconsin, along with 9-monthaged Romano. The soul of a pizza is the crust, which is made with high-gluten flour. Adding flavor to the pizza is the thick, rich sauce created from tomato puree from pear tomatoes — the meatiest of tomatoes. The meat also is very lean, at 90% lean meat, with no soy fillers. For the more adventurous pizza connoisseurs, Alexander’s offers broccoli, shrimp, albacore and pineapple to create original gourmet pizzas. Diners also can try a delicious oven-roasted cheese bread appetizer — one-half loaf of freshly baked French bread, basted with butter, seasoned with garlic and aged Romano, covered with mozzarella, roasted to a

honey-golden brown and lightly sprinkled with oregano. As one would say in Italian, “Qui si mangia sempre bene!” (Here one always eats well!) Employees at Alexander’s Pizza have hailed from various cities and countries around the globe. Exchange students from Hungary, England, Spain, Scotland, Lithuania, Jamaica, Poland, Belarus and the Czech Republic have made the trip across the Atlantic to work at Alexander’s Pizza. Alexander’s success is due to the quality put into each pizza. The dough is homemade and triple-raised while the crusts are rolled with care. The delicious taste of fresh butter is found in every bite of crust as well. Pizza is not the only item on the menu made with care and dedication. Savory

sandwiches are made to order with toasted French bread, creamy mozzarella, California tomato sauce and your choice of ham, Italian sausage or meatballs, and any of your favorite pizza toppings. To entertain diners of all ages, Alexander’s has a full assortment of arcade games, such as pinball, video games and several pool and foosball tables. It’s a great place to host birthday parties. Alexander’s Pizza, housed in a turn-of-the-century remodeled building, is located in downtown Eagle River on Railroad Street. Parking is available across the street. Customers can dine in or carry out, and can call ahead to have the pizza ready when they arrive. To enjoy the “best pizza in the North,” call (715) 4797363.

VACATION WEEK

Find delicious traditions, family dining at Big Rob’s Loose Moose Pub & Grill Formerly Tia Juana Supper Club, Big Rob’s Loose Moose Pub & Grill in Land O’ Lakes has expanded in the last nine years to serve delicious North Woods favorites to diners in a family atmosphere. Owner Rob “Big Rob” Andersen prides himself on having a family-friendly restaurant. “It’s a family restaurant and a supper club — a little bit of everything,” said Big Rob. The interior of the restaurant has been brightened by the addition of large windows, according to Andersen. The restaurant has two dining rooms. The parking lot also has been enlarged. But even with a new look, Loose Moose continues to serve favorites like barbecued ribs — formerly the house specialty at Tia Juana. Diners can choose from chewy or fall-off-thebone ribs, which are lightly smoked and seasoned with Big Rob’s own sauce. Few restaurants offer an all-you-can-eat fish fry every night, but Loose Moose is an exception. The nightly fish fry includes soup or salad, choice of potato and rye bread, along with baked beans and coleslaw. The restaurant also offers an allyou-can-eat shrimp boil. Potato choices include Moose fries, Boston wedges, baked potato or garlic mashed; vegetables or rice also are offered. Diners can choose walleye, panfish or poor man’s lobster as their entrée of choice. All are served with soup and salad, and choice of potato. Also available is roast duck on a bed of rice pilaf served with Rose’s black cherry and burgundy sauce. This entrée comes with soup and salad. Loose Moose offers a large array of deluxe sandwiches and appetizing basket meals, such as the barbecued pulled-pork sandwich, grilled chicken sandwich, black angus hamburgers, coconut shrimp, deluxe butterfly shrimp, chicken strips

Diners looking for prime rib Saturdays can choose between a 16-ounce cut or 24ounce moose cut of savory prime rib, served with choice of potato, soup and salad. Loose Moose also offers a 16-ounce or 24-ounce moosecut rib eye, along with its recent addition of an 8-ounce portion of filet. All are served with choice of potato, soup and salad. A great array of appetizers and desserts for two are available, as well as a selection of vegetarian meals. Loose Moose also offers a children’s menu which includes child-pleasing meals for children younger than 10. It includes chicken strips, hot dogs, fish fry and hamburgers. These meals include Moose fries, a children’s drink and pudding. Also added to the children’s menu are macaroni and cheese and a personalsize cheese pizza. Both include applesauce, a drink and pudding. Loose Moose has a full bar and an impressive wine collection. On tap are 10 domestic and import beers to

Patrons of all ages can enjoy the arcade room across from the bar and can view Big Rob’s collection of mounted animals in the dining room adjacent to the bar, which includes a bear, a moose head and an albino deer. Loose Moose has served food since July 2002 and Big Rob also owns Hillside Resort on Lac Vieux Desert, which includes a full resort and restaurant, for the last 26 seasons. Located on the corner of

highways 45 and E in Land O’ Lakes, Loose Moose bar is open daily at 4 p.m. Dinner is served at 5 p.m. Visa, MasterCard and Discover are accepted. Loose Moose also accepts reservations for large groups. Reservations for parties, meetings and other special occasions with more than 20 people can be made for mornings, afternoons and even days Rob’s Loose Moose is closed.
