North Woods beauty and challenging holes both found at Eagle River Golf Course Eagle River Golf Course is famous for its playing conditions, challenging layout and North Woods beauty. It is open to the public for everyone to enjoy. When golfers play at Eagle River Golf Course, they often are playing on the best course conditions available in the North Woods. “Many of our customers rave every year about the overall playing conditions they experience at our facility. We take pride in giving the golfers a playing surface that is consistent with our four-star rating we receive every year from Golf Digest’s Best Places to Play,” said Brad Missling, the club’s PGA golf professional. Golf Digest has given Eagle River Golf Course a four-star rating 10 years in a row. The customers playing the course are the people responsible for the rating the course receives. “This rating reflects the value and awesome experience of playing at the Eagle River Golf Course,” said
Missling. Eagle River Golf Course offers some of the most affordable rates of any fourstar rated golf course in the North Woods. Players can rest assured they are getting great value when they choose to golf at Eagle River Golf Course. Undulating greens and narrow fairways keep the course challenging. The practice area represents what customers should expect from a course with a four-star rating. A new putting and chipping green was built five years ago, a huge improvement for those who wish to practice all aspects of their short game. For golfers to practice their greenside sand game, a practice greenside bunker is featured. The driving range boasts three levels of teeing surface with target greens and yardage signs. Offering four sets of tees, the course is enjoyable to all skill levels. The newly added gold tees have become popular with senior

golfers. Many of the course’s holes are carved out of mature trees, reminding visitors why they love to golf in the North Woods area. The abundance of wildlife is another unique characteristic of the course. White-tailed deer make the course their home, red fox are spotted frequently and every spring the mallards take to the water on the course. “Trees, water hazards and rolling hills have made the course into one of the most popular courses in northern Wisconsin,” Missling said. The fun can continue after a round of golf. The clubhouse offers a friendly atmosphere to enjoy food, drinks and snacks. Large groups are welcome. The restaurant seats more than 100 people, and the outdoor patio is a popular spot to relax. The restaurant overlooks the scenic course. Men’s clothing lines include Cutter & Buck, Adidas, Sun Mountain, Antigua, Gear and Nike. Ladies’ lines carried are Antigua, Adidas, Annika, Nike, Sun Mountain, Gear and Cutter & Buck. “We carry a wider selection of ladies’ clothes than any other course in the area. If we don’t have an item you want, in most cases, we can special order it for you and have it shipped to your front door,” said Missling. Men’s and ladies’ golf shoe lines are from Adidas and Foot Joy. The course usually orders around 100 pairs of shoes to start the year, so the course offers a good size selection at a wide price range, making their shoe selection one of the best. wedges with zip groove technology, the pro shop staff at Eagle River Golf Course can help golfers find the perfect clubs. Eagle River Golf Course has two certified professionals on staff, PGA professional Brad Missling and Director of Golf Instruction Jeff Symmonds. Both are trained, qualified instructors to help golfers improve all parts of their game. Individual lessons are offered and made by appointment; group clinics and golf schools also are offered. Pricing information for lessons and golf schools can be viewed at eaglerivergolfcourse.com. Back again this year is the customer appreciation card. For every full-price 18-hole round golfers purchase, they will receive a stamp on their card. Once the card has been stamped five times, they receive a free round of golf with the rental of a golf cart. During the peak season, June 15 through Aug. 12, nine-hole green fees are $25 and 18-hole green fees are $39. Twilight rates start approximately five hours before dark and are $15. Cart fees during the
peak season are $11 for nine holes, $16 for 18 holes and $11 for twilight; all cart fees are per person. Tee times are taken 30 days in advance; if there are 12 or more players, advance booking options are available. Online tee times are available which allows golfers the ability to book their tee times anytime of the day from their computer at eaglerivergolfcourse.com. A midweek golf special, which includes 18 holes with cart for $35, is available on select Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The special is available July 10 and 11, and July 18 and 19. Recently, the Small Business Institute/Small Business Administration/UW System conducted anonymous independent surveys of pizza customers of the 11 major pizza restaurants in the Eagle River area. The survey considered quality of food, cleanliness, service and atmosphere. Alexander’s Family Pizza was rated #1! “Out of 11 restaurants mentioned — Alexander’s was ranked number 1,” an independent was second, and a national chain was third, “both far behind in customer choice.” Alexander’s was found to “offer a quality product at a reasonable price. According to the survey, quality has proven to be of more importance to the customer. Alexander’s has excellent pizza. It uses the highest quality ingredients.” Alexander’s Family Pizza wishes to thank all the many people who participated in the surveys. We truly appreciate the fact that our long-term goal of wanting to be known for quality pizza has been realized.

Deer Lake. The resort is at the gateway of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest.
Northernaire offers luxurious lakefront villas and condos For a relaxed vacation destination with that rustic appeal, look no further than Northernaire’s luxurious villas and condominiums in Three Lakes. At the gateway of the North Woods, more specifically the ChequamegonNicolet National Forest, Northernaire showcases all that nature has to offer in the Nicolet — scenic bicycling, hiking, camping, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and world-class snowmobiling are a few of the activities to enjoy. Just a short drive from the Northernaire into Three Lakes, you will find an oldfashioned yet inviting town full of shopping, dining and arts. Many nearby towns, including Eagle River and Minocqua, offer extensive shopping and dining opportunities. Nearly everything you’ll want or need can easily be found in the Three Lakes area. Northernaire’s greatest feature is the world’s largest freshwater Chain of Lakes at your fingertips. The
Chain consists of 28 lakes, 20 of which are easily accessible from the docks on Deer Lake and have a surface area of 7,626 acres, with 106 miles of shoreline. These lakes are home to 16 varieties of fish. Some lakes are secluded in the Nicolet National Forest, and all vary in size. They offer everything from water sports to canoeing to fishing. Northernaire offers all the luxuries of the North Woods in their condominiums and villas. Deluxe condominium units are constructed with maple hardwood floors, solid hardwood doors and trim, granite countertops, gas fireplaces and outdoor patios. Some units include tubs with ceramic surrounds, jetted tubs, lofts, arched doorways and various interior packages. Buyers will want to act quickly as only four condominiums are left for purchase. As 35 of the 39 condominiums have sold, Northernaire owners are turning their focus to a second pro-
ject, constructing and selling private villas on nine lake lots and 13 off-water lots. Preconstruction rates begin at $299,900 for 1,774 square feet. The new, stand-alone villas and lodges will offer relaxation with all the comforts of home. Featured are private decks and two-car garages. Spacious yards will provide a space for games or lounging with friends. The kitchens, foyers and dining rooms will have wood floors, with carpeting in the living rooms, bedrooms and hallways. The baths will have ceramic tile floors, five-foot fiberglass jetted tubs and separate ceramic showers with glass doors. Also included are stainless-steel appliances, granite countertops and gas fireplaces with stone and wood mantels. Add-on options offered are full basements, lofts and three-car garages. Units can also be fully furnished. The development is served by its own on-site
wastewater treatment system, one that uses advanced pretreatment technologies and won the approval of the Department of Natural Resources and the Department of Commerce. Condominium and villa owners buy into joint ownership of common amenities that include an indoor pool, fitness center, both indoor and outdoor hot tubs, a massive lounge area, walking trails, fire pits, a spa and 1,800 feet of frontage on Deer Lake with docking space. The North Lodge encompasses about 100,000 square feet of space. The Northernaire complex includes 33 boat slips on Deer Lake for seasonal or temporary use. Northernaire is located on Highway 32 east of Three Lakes. Sales staff will be available every Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for open showing. Appointments are needed during the week. Ride back in time on historic steam train The historic Lumberjack Steam Train, the only “Prairie”-style steam locomotive operating in Wisconsin, is once again making daily runs to the Wisconsin Forestry Museum Complex in Laona. This is the 44th year that the four-spot steam locomotive will carry passengers to the logging camp complex in the heart of the Nicolet National Forest. From the Soo Line Depot in Laona, visitors climb aboard the 1916 Vulcan steam engine and travel to the Wisconsin Forestry Museum. This train has run on the same tracks for more than 85 years. The tracks for the train
have been completely rebuilt. The original track was built around the early 1900s, its rails weighing approximately 60 pounds each. The new rails weigh in at 90 pounds and raise the road bed up 15 inches. The train itself dates back to the year 1916. It was then that the steam locomotive was built by Vulcan Iron Works in Wilkes Barre, Pa. It was purchased Sept. 22, 1926, and brought to Laona to haul logs. The steam engine pulls three cabooses, two steel coaches and an open-air observation car made from an old box car. The freshly repainted coaches and cabooses now

Homemade fudge created at Tremblay’s Sweet Shop If the aroma of chocolate is not enough to draw those wandering the streets of downtown Eagle River into Tremblay’s Sweet Shop, the sight of workers forming piles of fudge into neat loaves often is. Candy lovers of all ages have headed to Tremblay’s for more than 30 years. Originally Zimpelmann’s Soda Fountain, Tremblay’s offers a variety of treats made right in the store. In addition to the store in Eagle River, there is a Tremblay’s in Stillwater, Minn., along with the original store in Hayward. Those passing by can see fudge and peanut brittle being made through the large windows at the front
of the store. Employees are often stirring large pots for a curious and hungry audience. Although Tremblay’s specialty is fudge, the sweet shop has many kinds of chocolate treats, including turtles, hand-dipped chocolates and chocolate clusters. Fudge balls are made in chocolate, coconut, peanut butter, maple and vanilla flavors. Tremblay’s currently offers 14 different flavors of fudge, including dark chocolate. The store offers a wide selection of candies. Many flavors of saltwater taffy and cashew and peanut brittle are popular favorites, in addition to three different flavors of almond
bark. Sugar-free candy also is available, including sugarfree clusters of pecans, cashews, almonds, peanuts and raisins with vanilla or milk chocolate. Tremblay’s reputation continues to reach new customers. The shop has been featured in Midwest Living magazine. For customers’ convenience, or to send fudge as a gift, Tremblay’s can ship an order anywhere in the United States. The Eagle River store is located at 119 Wall St. Regular store hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. More information is available by calling (715) 479-8488 or toll free at 1(800) 40-FUDGE.

Rocking W Stables in Eagle River provides scenic, guided trail rides for enthusiastic horse riders of all ages and experi-
ence levels. Also offered are pony rides for the little ones and horse-drawn wagon rides.
Family fun found at Kartway Thrills of every kind can be found at Kartway theme park in Eagle River. With numerous go-cart tracks, bumper boats, water balloon catapults, mini golf, miniature jeeps and many other activities, families will never get bored. The traditional road gocart track is the most popular attraction. “When this place was just started, about 30 years ago, the go-carts were the only ride and it was just a circle track,” said owner Dean Nolan. That original track has grown to 850 feet and now features bridges, hairpin turns and long straightaways for all your racing enjoyment. For the children who can’t quite reach the pedals, Kartway offers double carts so that a parent can drive. For those who love speed, Kartway has the faster NasKarts. These cars are styled after sprint car racing machines and allow drivers to open the throttle and speed through banked corners. As if the first two courses are not enough, Kartway
has a slick track covered in wax and baby powder to test your driving skills. Slide around the corners on this eight-car track and leave your friends in the dust. Even the youngest drivers can drive at Kartway. The kiddie track allows small children to race around the pavement on miniature jeeps and four wheelers. To cool off on those blistering summer days, Kartway has an assortment of water activities. Motorized bumper boats allow riders to splash around and bump each other until everyone is soaked. Drivers also can team up and push less-fortunate riders into the fountain located in the middle of the pool. Everyone is sure to be drenched after this one. For a glorified water-balloon fight, check out Water Wars! In this game, two people are given a bucket of water balloons. Each person then goes to their respective area and loads their water balloons into a slingshot, to send them flying across the divide to soak their opponent.
If you want to challenge yourself on the putting green, Kartway has a 18hole mini golf course. Challenging for all ages, players will have to avoid water hazards and obstacles in order to defeat their opponent. Kartway also serves candy, chips, soda and water available in concessions. Picnic areas also are available for guest use. Kartway’s well-trained staff operate and supervise the rides in order to avoid any accidents. Nolan said the staff members age 16 and older control the adult rides and those younger than 16 are responsible for the kiddie rides. Tickets for the go-carts, slick track, NasKart, bumper boats and golf are $4 each. For children age 5 and younger, golf is free. A six-pack of tickets can be purchased for $24, with the seventh free. Tickets for the kiddie karts and Water Wars! are available for $2 each. A sixpack of tickets for these games can be purchased for $12, with the seventh free. Visitors also can enjoy Rocking W Stables, located
right next to Kartway. Riders of any skill level can partake in a 45- to 50-minute 3mile guided trail ride through the North Woods. Guests ages 6 and older can ride solo for $18, or for $25 visitors can ride double on a horse to accommodate riders age 5 and younger. Pony rides also are available for $5. Rocking W Stables is open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Horse-drawn wagon rides are provided at HiPines Campground every Friday and Saturday at 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. No reservations are needed. Kartway is open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Special group rates are offered for parties, however, credit cards are not accepted. Kartway and Rocking W Stables are located one mile north of Eagle River at 1890 Morley Road, near the intersection of highways 45 and G. For more information, call Kartway at (715) 479-4450 or Rocking W Stables at (715) 617-6779. Also, check out the website at northwoodsattrac tions.com.

The YMCA of the Northwoods will host its fourth annual Midnight Moonshine 5K Fun Run Saturday, July 7, beginning at the intersection of Wall and Railroad streets in downtown Eagle River. The run is one of two fundraisers for the YMCA Strong Kids Campaign, which provides youths and families with scholarships for YMCA programs and memberships. Registration that day is set to begin at 9:30 p.m., with entertainment slated for 10 p.m. followed by the race at midnight. Early registration for the race costs $25, but racers can register the day of the event for $35. “I plan on a great race,” said YMCA Program Director Julia John. “It’s the weekend after the Fourth of
July, and people are vacationing with family. What a great activity to do in the middle of the night with your friends and loved ones.” The YMCA will coordinate the event with a variety of local businesses and organizations donating resources. “The sponsorship for this annual event has been spectacular,” said John. “The children and families will truly benefit from the generosity of our local businesses and organizations. We’re still accepting donations and sponsorships.” Volunteers are a large part of the event, according to volunteer coordinator Shayne Wilfer. “Each year, over 50 volunteers come together to make this event a huge success,” he said. “We’re always happy to welcome new volunteers. It’s a great opportunity to give back to the community while participating in a high-energy Eagle River area event.” For more information re-

Northland Marine in Three Lakes, a great store for the great outdoors Located in downtown Three Lakes, Northland Marine began as a family owned marine and accessory store with a repair shop. Over the past 35 years, owners Mike and Laura Boers added clothing, swimwear and other outdoor products at the request of customers. Fifteen years ago, family member Roy Sobolik suggested creating a website featuring MinnKota trolling motor parts. Sales took off. Completely self-taught, webmaster Sobolik, now 90 years old, helped Northland Marine become what it is today, the world’s largest MinnKota trolling motor parts dealer. All varieties, models and sizes of MinnKota trolling motors are available, including those featuring iPilot and global positioning system capabilities. As a factory-authorized MinnKota service center, Northland Marine has expert staff available to assist with technical problems. “Knowledgeable technicians will diagnose your motor issue and get you
back on the water,” said Laura Boers. “We also help do-it-yourself customers by providing prepackaged repair kits for common repair jobs.” Reconditioned trolling motors with factory warranties are available. In the marine showroom, water enthusiasts will find accessories such as towable tubes, wetsuits, life jackets, water toys and more for family fun on the water. Northland Marine boasts an extensive selection of fashionable and functional gear and clothing. The store prides itself on offering quality products in a variety of price categories. Infant through adult extended sizes are offered throughout. According to Boers, “The already popular swimwear section has expanded this year, with new lines providing great fits for all shapes and sizes.” Many seasonal visitors anticipate purchasing their sportswear at Northland Marine each summer. “People will stop our customers on the street and ask, ‘Where did you get

that?’, ” said Boers. “There really is something different and unique going on here.” The retail store has also added to its summer footwear. Brands offered include Sanuk, Columbia, Bogs, Chaco, Timberland, Earth Shoes, Merrell and Ryka. Ryka is an active footwear line made exclusively for women, molded perfectly for a woman’s foot. Men’s and women’s sportswear brands featured are Columbia and Woolrich. Functional fabrics offered with ventilation and sunblock options will protect outdoorsmen and -women from the elements while running, biking, fishing and more. The junior department hosts brands like Quiksilver, Billabong and Roxy. Fashionable clothing, dresses and purses are available, including small luggage and other fun pieces. Stylish, high-quality eyewear is available through the Oakley, Native and Maui Jim lines, which include special reading sunglasses and even floating sunglasses. A favorite of visitors is the one-of-a-kind Three Lakes attire. Each year, a new lake shirt design is selected, allowing customers to have the name of their lake featured on a Three Lakes Tshirt. These popular T-shirts have started a tradition with many families.
Northland Marine is a factory-authorized Minn Kota service center. MinnKota sales techni-
cian Jason Kral stands with the many sizes and models of trolling motors available.
Summer hours through Labor Day are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays, and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sundays. For more information about Northland Marine, visit northlandmarine .com or call (715) 546-2333. Northland Marine is open

VACATION WEEK
Wed., July 4, 2012
Alexander’s Pizza brings tradition to your table More than 38 years ago, two brothers came to the North Woods seeking summer jobs. Rooted in a strong Italian community in Chicago, pizza was the staple at home and at college. Seeing a lack of pizzerias in the area, the brothers realized a great opportunity existed, and opened their own pizzeria in Eagle River. Sources say the locals at the time looked down on them and called them brash boys from “Chitown.” Today, the pizzeria has become a landmark. Customers come from all over the country to taste the best pizza in the area. Even celebrities have visited Alexander’s on occasion, including professional football players; head coaches from the NFL, NBA and NCAA; hockey players; movie stars; movie critics; national sports commentators; leaders of U.S. industries; newscasters; and authors. A visiting film critic even gave Alexander’s a “thumbs up.” Although the business opened many years ago, one thing remains the same — the traditional method of making pizza at Alexander’s. The pizza is made the way Grandma Del Cristo said — use the best to make
the best. The ingredients used are only the finest, which the owners ensure. The cheese used is 100% full-cream mozzarella, which is straight from the most award-winning dairy in Wisconsin, along with 9month-aged Romano. The soul of a pizza is the crust, which is made with high-gluten flour. Adding flavor to the pizza is the thick, rich sauce created from tomato puree from pear tomatoes — the meatiest of tomatoes. The meat also is very lean, at 90% lean meat, with no soy fillers. For the more adventurous pizza connoisseurs, Alexander’s offers broccoli, shrimp, albacore and pineapple to create original gourmet pizzas. Diners also can try a delicious oven-roasted cheese bread appetizer — one-half loaf of freshly baked French bread, basted with butter, seasoned with garlic and aged Romano, covered with mozzarella, roasted to a honey-golden brown and lightly sprinkled with oregano. As one would say in Italian, “Qui si mangia sempre bene!” (Here one always eats well!) Employees at Alexan-
der’s Pizza have hailed from various cities and countries around the globe. Exchange students from Hungary, England, Spain, Scotland, Lithuania, Jamaica, Poland, Belarus and the Czech Republic have made the trip across the Atlantic to work at Alexander’s Pizza. Alexander’s success is due to the quality put into each pizza. The dough is homemade and tripleraised while the crusts are rolled with care. The delicious taste of fresh butter is found in every bite of crust as well. Although the brothers have experimented with high-tech, cost- and laborsaving methods, the pizzamaking method at Alexander’s remains traditional. At Alexander’s, the pizza is cooked on a 150-pound stone deck. Pizza is not the only item on the menu made with care and dedication. Savory sandwiches are made to order with toasted French bread, creamy mozzarella, California tomato sauce and your choice of ham, Italian sausage or meatballs, and any of your favorite pizza toppings. To entertain diners of all ages, Alexander’s has a full assortment of arcade

Newly remodeled with a North Woods motif, Wolf Pack Cafe, once named “Restaurant of the Month” by Discover Wisconsin, offers many unique and homemade meals. Described by Discover Wisconsin as having a “simple and homey atmosphere,” Wolf Pack Cafe in St. Germain is a great place to go for a meal and a smile. Recently featured on the May 2012 TV episode of Discover Wisconsin, the cafe was also recognized for “Best Meal” for their delicious corned beef and cabbage in an Eau Claire newspaper. The 2003 Unlimited Magazine said the restaurant had the best pancakes. The Burst-O-Berry pancake, with bluberry, raspberry and cranberry is popular. Customers can create
their own pancakes from these and other options such as banana, pumpkin, apple cinnamon, chocolate chip and more. “Everything is homemade fresh, and we use real maple syrup and butter, not margarine,” said owner Kathy Lass. Kathy and her husband, Joe, have owned and operated Wolf Pack Cafe since January 1999 and strive to bring the best to their customers. And that is just what they have done over the past 13 years. “We try to do everything a step above the rest,” said Kathy. The cafe’s motif is true to its name — wall-to-wall wolves welcome diners as they enter. The decor includes wolf prints and customer-donated handmade wolf items. It truly gives a

North Woods feel to the dining experience. Besides being known for their “world’s best pancakes” and “world’s greatest burgers,” Wolf Pack Cafe is home to the hash brown sandwich. It is made with real potatoes that are always fresh and never frozen. Other unique meals offered by Wolf Pack Cafe include pan-fried perch (available blackened) with eggs, potatoes and toast, and meatloaf and eggs. Another meal that has become

They offer homemade potato chips, which are seasoned and served warm. Homemade desserts also are available daily. Wolf Pack Cafe is open from 6 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. daily and is closed Tuesdays. Daylilies blossom at Shady Gardens Shady Gardens welcomes customers back to celebrate its 10-year anniversary. “If you are planning your outdoor landscaping or just want to take a peaceful stroll through the 6.5-acre garden, Shady Gardens is the best place,” said owner Kitty Swiontek. Shady Gardens offers a unique experience for customers as the gardens are carved out of the scenic woods. There are some inclines, but benches are set along the garden walkway for customers to use while resting and viewing the gardens. The scenery changes as plants grow and bloom during the season — spring, summer and fall all offer a different visual experience. Plants are generally in bloom throughout the growing season, which begins with the blossom of the primrose in spring. Daffodils, bleeding hearts, pulmonaria, perennial bachelor buttons, peonies, irises and many more flowers and plants follow. It is now the time of year where customers can find daylilies beginning to bloom. The public can choose plants from among the 300plus hostas, 200 daylilies and more than 150 varieties of other perennials. Shady Gardens is always adding new varieties of perennials, especially hostas. “We will dig the plants for you and be assured that you will be satisfied with these healthy, northern Wisconsin-grown plants and their reasonable prices,” said Rich Swiontek. “We have the best prices for perennials and shrubs in
