Guides/Kids Day planned for Eagle River July 12 The Eagle River Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center, in conjunction with the Eagle River Guides Association, is seeking guides for its 32nd annual Guides/Kids Day Thursday, July 12, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. “Approximately 100 kids will be anxiously awaiting a chance to fish with you, a fishing guide or fishing enthusiast,” said Eagle River Chamber of Commerce Events Coordinator Kim Emerson. “We’re looking for a few good anglers who would enjoy taking a few good kids fishing for the day.”
Emerson said volunteers don’t have to be professionals, as long as they are enthusiastic anglers who enjoy sharing nature with youths. To participate as a guide, contact Bill Hassey at (715) 479-7395 or sign up at Eagle Sports Center, located on Wall Street in downtown Eagle River. There will be an evening cookout for guides, guests and volunteers at the Eagle River Inn, located at 5260 Highway 70 W. in Eagle River. What makes a great-tasting pizza every time? What makes a great pizza? Tradition. The old ways still work, and all good cooking starts with the basics. Quality food starts with the ingredients. Only the finest ingredients should be used, starting from the bottom up, to ensure satisfied customers who come back time after time for the best pizza around. The first ingredient for any pizza is dough. It should be made with flour that is high gluten, the highest quality flour, Amber Durham wheat — the finest of all wheats, cane sugar and only the best yeast. It must be made fresh, never frozen. The dough should then be thrice raised, which takes 36 hours. This ensures the best dough possible. Pear tomato puree is the main ingredient for the next layer, the sauce. Pear tomatoes are one of the best on the market because they contain the maximum of tomato solids. The best of domestic and imported spices would then be blended to create a uniquely superb sauce with a savory taste. In Wisconsin, cheese is a very important ingredient for pizza. All the cheese used should be 100% Wisconsin full cream moz-
zarella, without one gram of artificial cheese, for the fullest flavor. A superb pizza also contains the best meat. The sausage should be 100% meat, 90% lean whole hog, blended with the finest spices for a delectable taste sure to please even the most discriminating of palates. The pepperoni should also be 100% meat, 90% lean, aged to perfection to enhance the flavor, sure to please all pepperoni lovers. Other toppings available must also be high quality. Only the best onions should be used, including Vadalia, Walla Walla, Texas 10/15, and sweet red Bermuda onions. These create a mouthwatering addition to any pizza. Green peppers must be mixed slightly with the sweetest red bell peppers for an appetizing way to liven up a pizza. California black olives also add a savory taste. For a wild appetite, sweet succulent pineapple, crispy vitamin-rich broccoli, tender flaky solid white albacore, or luscious shrimp could be added. At Alexander’s Pizza, these basics have created a tradition of quality food,
which has made the restaurant the most popular pizza stop for residents and vacationers alike. In addition, when all the ingredients are being artfully combined, nobody wants to think of a dirty kitchen or unsanitary conditions. But never fear, for Alexander’s Pizza has the cleanest kitchen you’ll find. In fact, it would even be clean enough to perform surgery. Of course, an aesthetically pleasing environment is also needed to enjoy the full pleasure of eating delicious pizza. Alexander’s Pizza offers a clean, relaxing environment with friendly service and a casual atmosphere. Games and pool are also available to entertain the kids while the food is being prepared to order. Where do you get pizza made with care and concern? Alexander’s Pizza — that’s where. Alexander’s Pizza is located on Railroad Street in downtown Eagle River. Call (715) 479-7363, and your pizza will be ready when you arrive. Alexander’s Pizza is the place for you. Located at 1106 N. Bluebird Road, Tribute Brewing Co. will begin brewing its first batch of beer this summer. Co-owner and brewmaster Marc O’Brien, who has been homebrewing for 16 years, plans to brew his award-winning recipes on a much larger scale, using the same techniques to create high-quality, freshly brewed beer. “As a homebrewer, I’ve brewed 10-gallon batches at a time,” said O’Brien. “Now I’ll adjust my recipes to brew seven barrels at a time, equaling approximately 217 gallons of beer. I want to make beers that everyone would enjoy drinking.” O’Brien will brew with equipment previously used by O’So Brewing Company in Plover and Lazy Monk in Eau Claire. Outdoor adventures begin at WalkAbout The term walkabout was first used by Australian aborigines, meaning a journey one would take during adulthood to rediscover one’s self. Joy and Kevin Nelson opened WalkAbout Paddle & Apparel in Eagle River 11 years ago with that philosophy in mind. WalkAbout can help prepare you for your life’s journey. “We have a large selection of kayaks, canoes and outdoor equipment for those who quietly enjoy the Eagle River area,” said owner Joy Nelson. WalkAbout features several lines of kayaks made in America. The store also carries canoes from Souris River and Mad River. Souris River is available in Kevlar and Carbon Tec. Mad River is stocked in Royalex and rotomolded plastic. Newly added to WalkAbout’s outdoor equipment are this year’s stand-up paddleboards. Designed for recreation and exercise, paddleboarding is an activity suit-
able for all members of the family. For those inexperienced on the water, WalkAbout has staff to help choose the right equipment. WalkAbout also is a local Yakima dealer, providing expert help in finding just the right rack accessories to transport bikes and boats safely. WalkAbout hosts kayak and paddleboard demos every Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Silver Lake Beach, no sign-up necessary. Any interested parties wanting details should stop by the store or call for more information. Canoes and kayaks aren’t the only outdoor items people will find for their time on the water. The store offers a selection of life jackets and swimsuits for family members who want to take a dip. Sizes are available for adults, children and even the family dog. WalkAbout has expanded its selection of children’s books and resource guides essential to a safe and successful outdoor experience.
Coloring books, insect guides and maps of Wisconsin and Upper Michigan are just a few of the many items the store offers. While on walkabout, finding the proper footwear is incredibly important. WalkAbout offers a selection of Keen, Merrell, Chaco, Teva, Dansko, Jambu, Think, El Naturalista and Born shoes. SmartWool socks are available in all different styles and colors. The store also offers children’s shoes including Keen, Ugg and Dansko. Hi-Pines Campground debuts Aqua Play Zone Water Park One of the state’s top campgrounds, Hi-Pines Campground in Eagle River has added the Aqua Play Zone Water Park as one of its amenities. “We are very excited about the new water park. It is the first in the area and is available not only to Hi-Pines campers, but to the general public as well. We have been receiving very positive feedback,” said owner Mark Weber. “Now that summer is finally here, families all around are looking for fun activities they can do together that are financially doable,” Weber stated. “The Aqua Play Zone offers many inflatable toys for the kids and a sandy beach and shaded areas for adults to relax, all at an affordable price.” Hi-Pines has upgraded its pond by adding a new liner and installing a stateof-the-art water filtration system. The beach has been expanded to nearly 200 feet of sand with beach chairs and shade structures. The 1-acre Aqua Play Zone includes inflatable toys, ranging from a 60foot-long obstacle course to

Island Art Walk set July 14 at Torpy Park The Lakeland Art League, Inc. and Lakeland Area Kiwanis Club will hold the Island Art Walk Saturday, July 14, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Torpy Park and in the Campanile Center in Minocqua. The 37th annual art fair event had changed its location and has gained the support of two local businesses as supporting sponsors of this year’s event. Woody Woodruff of Loon Land Trading Co. and Twisted Root Emporium and Bob Metropulos of Park Side Gallery are both sponsors and will be visitor stops along the path from Torpy Park to the Campanile Center for the Arts, according to event organizers.
The art fair event, which was redesigned this year and is now renamed Island Art Walk, will have the outdoor portion of the show at Torpy Park, which will include more than 45 crafter and artist booths on the park’s upper level under the trees across from the pavilion. Visitors may continue along a two-block path following the sidewalk with stops at Loon Land Trading Co. and Twisted Root Emporium and Park Side Gallery. Visitors will continue down Flambeau Street to the Campanile Center for the indoor event, which will display unique individual pieces of fine art and fine
crafts. This two-location event creates a fun walk between the events while also visiting these art centers along the way in part of the downtown atmosphere of the Island City of Minocqua. The Campanile indoor art show will be a center for artists creating fine art and craft pieces which can be displayed individually
without the weather affecting the art. The Art League will be available at this part of the show to assist visitors, sell raffle tickets for some of the art and facilitate the sale of the displayed art. As a fine art and craft show, the public can vote on their favorite piece with ribbons and prizes being awarded to the top three art pieces.

Forest Lake Country Store, west of Land O’ Lakes on County Highway B, provides a comfortable dining setting. The
unique store offers a variety of food for the whole family and more than 250 wine and craft beer selections.
Forest Lake’s unique offerings make it a must-see destination Nestled in the woods along Highway B is Forest Lake Country Store in Land O’ Lakes. The unassuming store sneaks up on drivers. Many are surprised by the unique dining and shopping experience inside. “The quaint dining area reminds you of sitting in your best friend’s kitchen. Neither too big nor too small, it’s the perfect size for casual dining,” said owner Mark Gostisha. A sense of camaraderie is seen, with guests talking among themselves or chatting from table to table. The country store’s menu is casual. Breakfast features large fluffy omelets, french toast with real Wisconsin maple syrup, and eggs served with toasted homemade bread. Lunch and dinner boast of special items such as handcrafted panini sandwiches and signature salads. A popular evening at-
traction is Kris’ handmade pizza. The dough is made from scratch and is not rolled until an order is placed. The sauce is created on-site and the toppings are piled high on each pie. Customers frequently say the pizza is the best they have tasted north of Chicago, according to Gostisha. Visitors may peruse the retail area while waiting for their meal. The noticeable wine selection hosts 150 boutique labels such as Chateau Ste. Michelle, Stag’s Leap Wine Cellar, Rombauer, Caymus, Decoy and more. Obscure labels can be found by those who want to try something new. Bottles can be brought to the table, corked and served with crystal glassware. More than 130 craft beers are offered in the beer selection. Sprecher, Leinenkugel’s, Oomengang, Southern Tier, Lakeside and Bell’s Brewing, Laguni-
ta’s and other craft brewers are available. Guests may have a beer with their meal, or mix a six-pack to take home for a private tasting party. The shelves are filled with many other unique and tasty treats. Forty artisan cheese from Carr Valley, Sartori, Widmers and more are carried. Find Amish jams, Wisconsin salsas and rare grains like lemon orzo, Israeli couscous, quinoa, Black Japonica rice, organic amaranth, freekah and teff. For those who want to keep in touch, a general-interest, monthly newsletter is offered. New products are introduced, and store events and Vilas County events are announced. A wine-only newsletter is available, with new wine introductions, special offers and introductory prices. Customers can send in an order and pick up their wines a couple of days later.
Visitors won’t want to miss the exciting Ride with Leinie biking event Saturday, Aug. 11. Dick and Jean Leinenkugel will lead the bicycle ride, returning to Forest Lake Country Store at noon. The $25 registration fee includes a tasting of eight beers, a brat lunch and a raffle ticket for the 16-foot Leinenkugel canoe. All proceeds will benefit the construction of the 40mile bicycle trail in Land O’ Lakes. More information can be found at wilderness lakestrails.org. Forest Lake Country Store is located at 6256 Highway B. “The store may be a little hard to find, but once you are here, you won’t want to leave,” says Gostisha. Take the drive about seve miles west of Land O’ Lakes to Forest Lake Country Store. Visitors will understand why the slogan is “serving great food and a whole lot more.”

Artarama set July 21 in Eagle River If you love art shows, music, good food, refreshing libations and the atmosphere of a North Woods festival, then the place to be Saturday, July 21, is at Artarama’s River Walk Art Show in Eagle River. For the 40th time, Artarama is about to happen. Since its small beginning in 1972, Artarama has grown in size, popularity and reputation. This year, visitors will be enticed to attend by colorful tents featuring the work of more than 125 artists
from all over the country. No matter the weather, one of Wisconsin’s biggest summer events will be held at Riverside Park from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The park is located on Division Street, just behind the Vilas County Fairgrounds. “The purpose of this show is twofold,” said Barb Zyhowski, Artarama committee member. “It is organized to bring a high-quality art show to Eagle River, along with the commerce that is a result of many visitors being drawn to the
Artarama is a great way to spend a summer day in the North Woods, proclaims Zyhowski. “It takes a full year to put this show together,” said Zyhowski. “We hope Artarama visitors truly enjoy it and leave with great memories and items they will treasure for a long time.”

Wine & Cheese Tasting set at Eagle Waters July 16 The 19th annual Wine & Cheese Tasting, sponsored by Eagle River Rotary Club, will be held Monday, July 16. This year’s gala event will take place at Eagle Waters Resort, located just off Rangeline Road east of Eagle River. More than 50 wineries will be represented, including samplings from 11 different countries for visitors’ sampling pleasure. To compliment the wine tasting, a large variety of domestic and imported cheeses also will be available. A side attraction at this year’s event will be beer samplings from Leinenkugel’s Brewing Company. One of the highlights of the evening will be a silent auction with goods and services donated by area merchants and Rotary Club members. A new live auction also is planned this year. Donations are now being accepted for the auctions and may include a gift certificate or services. Another way to contribute to the event is to purchase tickets to the event to give away. Cash donations will be accepted. All proceeds from this event will be used to support various local and worldwide Rotary projects and more, including local bike trails.. Last year’s major project was the renovation of the restrooms at Riverside Park.
A variety of foods also will be available for the hungry buyer, ranging from homemade toffee to specialty coffees to walking tacos.
area. But more importantly, it is still organized, as it was in 1972, to raise funds that are all returned to the community as scholarships, art programs, beautification projects and services.” Two local artists have been chosen to judge the 125 exhibitors. Carl Gromoll works as a wood furniture designer and Debra Ketchum Jircik works in clay and handmade paper. Local musician Patti Katz Black will entertain on the keyboard accompanying her pure vocal style.
Antique show planned Dealers from several states will participate in an antique show at the Boulder Junction Community Center on Highway M Friday and Saturday, July 13-14. The show hours will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each
day. Admission for the event will be $5 per person. Youths 14 and younger will receive free admission. There also will be a luncheon by the Boulder Junction Lioness Club.

Alexander’s Pizza brings tradition to your table More than 38 years ago, two brothers came to the North Woods seeking summer jobs. Rooted in a strong Italian community in Chicago, pizza was the staple at home and at college. Seeing a lack of pizzerias in the area, the brothers realized a great opportunity existed and opened their own pizzeria in Eagle River. Sources say the locals at the time looked down on them and called them brash boys from “Chi-town.” Today, the pizzeria has become a landmark. Customers come from all over the country to taste the best pizza in the area. Even celebrities have visited Alexander’s on occasion, including professional football players; head coaches from the NFL, NBA and NCAA; hockey players; movie stars; movie critics; national sports commentators; leaders of U.S. industries; newscasters; and authors. A visiting film critic even gave Alexander’s a “thumbs up.” Although the business opened many years ago, one thing remains the same — the traditional method of making pizza at Alexander’s. The pizza is made the way Grandma Del Cristo said — use the best to make the best.
The ingredients used are only the finest, which the owners ensure. The cheese used is 100% full-cream mozzarella, which is straight from the most award-winning dairy in Wisconsin, along with 9-monthaged Romano. The soul of a pizza is the crust, which is made with high-gluten flour. Adding flavor to the pizza is the thick, rich sauce created from tomato puree from pear tomatoes — the meatiest of tomatoes. The meat also is very lean, at 90% lean meat, with no soy fillers. For the more adventurous pizza connoisseurs, Alexander’s offers broccoli, shrimp, albacore and pineapple to create original gourmet pizzas. Diners also can try a delicious oven-roasted cheese bread appetizer — one-half loaf of freshly baked French bread, basted with butter, seasoned with garlic and aged Romano, covered with mozzarella, roasted to a honey-golden brown and lightly sprinkled with oregano. As one would say in Italian, “Qui si mangia sempre bene!” (Here one always eats well!) Employees at Alexander’s Pizza have hailed from

various cities and countries around the globe. Exchange students from Hungary, England, Spain, Scotland, Lithuania, Jamaica, Poland, Belarus and the Czech Republic have made the trip across the Atlantic to work at Alexander’s Pizza. Alexander’s success is due to the quality put into each pizza. The dough is homemade and triple-raised while the crusts are rolled with care. The delicious taste of fresh butter is found in every bite of crust as well. Pizza is not the only item on the menu made with care and dedication. Savory sandwiches are made to order with toasted French bread, creamy mozzarella, California tomato sauce and your choice of ham, Italian sausage or meatballs, and any of your favorite pizza toppings. To entertain diners of all ages, Alexander’s has a full assortment of arcade games,

Ride back in time on historic steam train The historic Lumberjack Steam Train, the only “Prairie”-style steam locomotive operating in Wisconsin, is once again making daily runs to the Wisconsin Forestry Museum Complex in Laona. This is the 44th year that the four-spot steam locomotive will carry passengers to the logging camp complex in the heart of the Nicolet National Forest. From the Soo Line Depot in Laona, visitors climb aboard the 1916 Vulcan steam engine and travel to the Wisconsin Forestry Museum. This train has run on the same tracks for more than 85 years. The tracks for the train have been completely rebuilt. The original track was built around the early 1900s, its rails weighing approximately 60 pounds each. The new rails weigh in at 90 pounds and raise the road bed up 15 inches. The train itself dates back to the year 1916. It was then that the steam locomotive was built by Vulcan Iron Works in Wilkes Barre, Pa. It was purchased Sept. 22, 1926, and brought to Laona to haul logs. The steam engine pulls three cabooses, two steel coaches and an open-air observation car made from an old box car. The freshly repainted coaches and cabooses now stand gleaming, shiny and ready for riders. Passengers have the opportunity to sit in the authentic coaches and a rare cupola caboose as the vin-
tage steam engine takes them back in time to an actual site of a North Woods logging camp. Wisconsin Forestry Museum’s history dates back to the late 1890s, when it was established as a logging camp. In 1969, it opened as a museum, showcasing artifacts and equiment of lumberjacks and the logging era. The site of the Wisconsin Forestry Museum was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996, and also has won numerous awards. Children and adults alike can enjoy the centuryold animal barn and corral, which feature a variety of baby animals to feed and pet, including rabbits, kittens, guinea hens, turkeys, chickens and turtles. Three miniature horses and donkeys, as well as pigmy goats and potbelly pigs, have been added to the menagerie this season. All the animals can be approached and petted. The on-site nature center is a hands-on facility featuring animal pelts and displays of plants, minerals and animals native to the North Woods. Guests can partake in the award-winning “Green Treasure” forest tour. The 30-minute narrated tour aboard a motorized surrey winds through an industrial forest of trees indigenous to the area. A Wilderness Water Tour also is available, which takes patrons on a 30minute hayrack and pon-

Waldmann Construction builds personalized homes Waldmann Construction in St. Germain believes that building a home should be a rewarding experience. Staff at Waldmann also believe the process of building is as important as the final product, and that both should leave a positive, lasting impression on those involved. According to owner Brad Waldmann, “When we build a home for a client, a partnership is created in order to guide clients through what becomes a memorable event.” It begins with the initial design which can be an existing plan or some notes on a napkin. Waldmann explains, “We’ve had clients approach us with a drawing and ask, ‘Will this stand?’ Or, ‘Can the bathroom be made big-
ger?’ Sometimes there is sentimental value in an existing property that clients want to incorporate into a new home or addition, such as door trim with the heights of their children or a tree in the yard that was planted when they married.” Waldmann’s talented design staff takes time to listen to conceptual ideas and wishes in order to create a unique final product. When a design is finalized, building begins. “Everything can be organized through our office,” said Waldmann. “We work with clients through budgeting and permit applications, as well as product and color choices. It’s great to see clients so comfortable with us that they come in, grab a cup of coffee and head to the cabinet shop for a chat with the carpenters. We handle the scheduling of subcontractors and ordering of supplies to ensure quality control and the timely comple-
tion of every job.” Waldmann Construction’s skilled craftsmen are proficient with many kinds of building materials, including log, timber, stickbuilt and SIPs panels. Because Waldmann does not work exclusively with any log dealer, they are able to offer products suited to clients’ budgets and needs. Waldmann’s employees are continually exploring new products and being educated on installation and new techniques. Green building has become an important part of many Waldmann Construction projects. Building sustainable, low maintenance, energy-efficient projects helps protect the environment while many times enabling owners to save money and improve their family’s health, safety and comfort. Waldmann’s building inspector is certified to facilitate safe removal of lead, mold and asbestos. A profes-
