CN&R last-minute Holiday Gift GuidE 2019 A Holiday to Remember L ast-minute shopping can be festive – the reason why many of us only shop now. But it can also be stressful, raising the temptation to grab the first bland item on an end-cap. That’s where CN&R is here to help. Even if you are a holiday procrastinator, you can still make your gift-giving personal and creative, especially if you shop local. Chico retailers are staffed-up and ready to give you personal advice, helping you find that oh-so-perfect gift for everyone (still) on your list. But also turn the pages of this guide and find our local business owners’ advice on the true meaning of the holidays. “The best last-minute gift to give is your presence,” says Kasey Valle, owner of Geology Rocks & Minerals. “Being surrounded by the ones you love is unmatchable.”
So find that local lastminute present, but bring it in person, turn your phone off at the door, and give the gift of your full undivided attention. Play a board game, sing a carol by the piano, chat by the fire, taste every bite of that holiday gnocchi, really look your friends and family in the eye. It will make for a holiday you’ll cherish forever.

could take a road trip and some time off to go find some more crystals to share and showcase at my shop here in Chico and the shop in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Kasey Valle, Owner What’s your advice for last-minute giftgiving?
The best last-minute gift to give is your presence. Being surrounded by the ones you love is unmatchable. Some beautiful gems or handmade crystal jewelry come in second. Good thing we have both down here at the shop off Main Street in Chico.
What has been your favorite gift?
The best gift I received was from my older brother. He flew me out to California to see the championship football game when I was attending college in Florida. Florida State won the championship that night and it was great to celebrate that with my best friend and big brother!
What do you hope to find in your stocking on Christmas morning?

I would be ecstatic to find in my stocking this season the GPS locations of countless rockhounding spots all over the country. That way I
Describe your go-to holiday beverage.
My favorite holiday drink is coquito. It is a Puerto Rican coconut eggnog that we make together as a family. It’s a lot of fun and takes a lot of elbow grease, but in the end it’s worth it.
What event in Chico do you look forward to the most?
The polar bear plunge at One Mile is my favorite local holiday event. The cold plunge is a great refresher, and everyone who comes has such great energy. Can’t wait for this year’s!
Best holiday memory?
My favorite holiday memory was taking a family trip to Tahoe for a white Christmas. Both my brothers, my mother, and my niece and nephew all came. We’d never had a white Christmas before, because we’re from Florida. It was amazing! Everyone learned to snowboard and make snowmen.

Funland Scott Andrews, General Manager What’s your advice for last-minute gift-giving?
Well, obviously a good pair of roller skates! But if they already have their own, I would have to say gift cards. I’m big on gift cards personally—I know it’s not as personal, but I get gratification knowing the receiver can buy what they really want and is reminded at the time of purchase who gave it to them and why.
What has been your favorite gift?
I still remember as a kid getting the G.I. Joe action figure ‘Headquarters’ play set—it was a year-long wish list item and unwrapping that morning was surreal.
What do you hope to find in your stocking on Christmas morning? It needs to be a tall stocking, but I’m hoping Santa brings me a new pool cue!

Describe your go-to holiday beverage.
I seem to be the only one that drinks it—but I like eggnog. Hot chocolate would be a close second, though.
What event in Chico do you look forward to the most?
It’s always great to see the kids and families here at Cal Skate for their Winter Break—counting down the days until Christmas. Sometimes knowing their parents bought new skates for them, but not being able to tell them, but then seeing them the day after with shiny new wheels.
Best holiday memory?
That would easily be every Christmas morning since I became a dad. Watching three different kids line up down the hallway and run to the tree around the corner to have their own ‘first’ Christmas morning, their own ‘best ever’ Christmas morning, their own ‘look what Santa brought’ Christmas morning.

Maisie Jane’s Maisie Jane Hurtado, Founder/President What’s your advice for last-minute gift-giving?
I’d have to say our Gift Nut Rounds! They are already ‘wrapped’ (we put a beautiful ribbon bow on them), and there’s an assortment of different prices and nut combinations. These are great to have on hand for those unexpected holiday guests, the mailman, neighbors, your children’s teachers, you name it! Well, the gift wasn’t specifically intended for me. It was a gift from Santa to my three girls when they were very young. Santa brought them a miniature horse and a pony! I think I had just as much fun with them as my girls: getting them up in the saddle and taking them for rides, spoiling the ponies by feeding them treats, and putting ribbons and bows in their manes!
I’d love to find a good watch! I’m tired of looking at my phone all the time.

Oh, boy, that’s such a hard one, there are so many! Rather, there are several holiday traditions that stand out as my favorites! Heading up Highway 32 to cut the family Christmas tree is always an event that creates fun memories. We pack hot chocolate, usually a winter picnic with some sort of hot soup and crackers and seasonal mandarins. My kids always look for the snow, and every year make snow angels, even if they are lying in a measly snow patch! There’s always a snowball fight that follows. And then the countdown to yell ‘Timber!’ as the tree comes crashing down.

Apollo Music Nerissa Prieto, Owner What’s your advice for lastminute gift-giving?
There’s been lots of emphasis recently on giving “experiences” as gifts—we love this idea! Why not take a ukulele class as a family? Hang some ukuleles on the tree for Christmas morning effect! Wrap up a rental keyboard under the tree for “Grandma and Me” piano lessons. Or give a karaoke machine to your little princess with voice lessons to make her “Disney” dreams come true! So easy ... so meaningful ... so together!
What has been your favorite gift?
My husband is a professional opera singer. While I sing as a hobby, he once gave me voice lessons with a well-known operatic coach in the Bay Area. Wow. A little intimidating at first, but exciting, fun and mind-opening in the end! A good music teacher can change your understanding of music and art, give you confidence in self-expression, or help you communicate with your audience or other performers. Music
lessons are not just for kids—adults can find joy in picking up a new instrument or re-discovering a talent from their younger years!
Describe your go-to holiday beverage.
The French 75! Festive in a bubbly champagne base, with the herbal greenness of a floral small-batch gin (we love the local Monkey Face distillation!), and St. Germain elderflower liqueur, all finished with a tart citrus—I have lemon and lime trees, but for a little sweetness, my mandarins are starting to pop!
Best holiday memory?
Santa Claus came and overnight renovated our unfinished, spider-filled basement into a cool playroom with foosball table, couch, big TV, and play tables for my boys who were 2 and 8. They were in total disbelief that Santa could pull off a trick like that! (Thanks to uncles Dave and Dan and my hubby!)

What has been your favorite gift?
Years ago when I was a little kid, I received a set of the World Book Encyclopedia. I didn’t think it was a great gift at the time, but looking back on it, it gave me a real appreciation for reading. I look back on it with real fondness.
What do you hope to find in your stocking on Christmas morning?
If Santa were to win the lottery, I’d like him to bring me a brand-new pickup.

Describe your go-to holiday beverage.
Hot spiced cider. It’s warming, it’s tasty, and you’re around people sharing it, so it’s the whole enjoyment of the holidays.
What event in Chico do you look forward to the most?
The Bidwell Mansion Christmas. We grew up close to that so seeing the history and seeing the Mansion decorated is a special thing to see.
Best holiday memory?
In our neighborhood when I was young growing up, the whole neighborhood got together and did a continuous decoration theme, like The Night Before Christmas. Everyone would have a part in it, so you could go through the neighborhood and see the whole theme. Those are fond memories.
