Additional tips for planning a party like a pro: u Let it go

Don’t stress about things that are out of your control, such as the weather. Instead, have a contingency plan. u Stack the deck

It’s always better to have more help than you need than to be overwhelmed. Often, it’s worth the cost of hiring professionals if it reduces stress and keeps family and friends from being overburdened. u Mental preparation

Accept that there will be unforeseen challenges and vow to remain calm so you can handle these situations quickly and efficiently. u Create a buffer

Schedule to have the event setup completed one hour prior to start time. That way, you aren’t still staging when people arrive. Also have a 5 percent budget buffer for unforeseen costs and last-minute additions.

KID’S BIRTHDAYS

Choosing a theme based on a favorite toy or activity can lead to a creative party

Wish come true have a blast planning a kid’s birthday by AmAndA CArAwAy

I

t’s your little one’s big day! Make his wish come true with a whimsical birthday party (and give your inner

child a chance to run free)! Planning a party for kids can be fun and give adults the opportunity to be nostalgic. Scott Andrews, operator and general manager of FunLand, recommends party planners embrace these joys. Although it’s important to plan ahead so you can book the venue and services, he says to avoid overplanning. With children’s parties, it’s important to be flexible. Don’t try to make the party perfect. Instead, establish an environment where kids can relax and have fun. Planning a party with too many details can cause stress because kids rarely do what’s expected. It’s also important to give kids choices and not assume all kids enjoy doing the same things.

CAKES

Layers of fun Picking the Perfect cake for your event by amanda caraway

A

cake can be an important feature of any party. In fact, cakes often serve as the main centerpiece

and help establish the party theme. According to Emily Zimmerman, owner of Lovely Layers Cakery, elaborate cakes made with specific party themes take several days to create. The more time you give a cake shop, the more special your cake can be. Zimmerman recommends ordering custom-made cakes several weeks before your event and wedding cakes at least four months in advance. Cakes with elaborate decorations take several days to set, and some shops can only do a certain number of cakes at a time.

Be creative. A cake can be designed to look like almost anything.

hen it’s time to eat, drink and be merry, the opportunities are endless. But where do you

begin? Amanda Leveroni, owner of Bacio Catering in Chico, begins menu planning with a series of questions. What type of person are you and who are your friends? How do you dine? What excites you about food? Leveroni says your food interests can often guide you toward fun party themes such as farm-to-fork, Mexican fiesta or Pacific Rim. Once the dream vision has been created, it’s time to scale back and examine what can realistically be served within your budget and the event parameters.

Instead of a traditional dinner party, ask

Have guests bring items they no

guests to gather at a local food bank or

longer want (artwork, clothing, wine,

another charity and spend a few hours

whatever!) and have others bid on

volunteering. Guests will save money

them. Then donate the proceeds to

and spend the day doing something

a charity.
