Time is collapsed through editing rather than using time-lapse images so that the viewer can have a more natural experience of being in the refuge itself, watching the snow geese lift and resettle on the ponds. The pace is slow, offering an opportunity to sink deeply into the experience of birds, water, mountains, grasses and trees. Scene from Refuge

Join field trip leaders, workshop presenters and all our hard-working committee members and volunteers in celebrating this special evening.
Featured Keynote Speaker: Karen Amstutz, Professional Naturalist & Environmental Educator
Karen is an exceptionally gifted speaker and her programs are renowned in Yosemite National Park. Working as a naturalist for 30 years, she has lived with a connection and attention to the natural world in both professional and personal capacities. Leading bird walks and conducting bird surveys in Yosemite since 2012 has provided engagement with a surprising variety of avian species.
Keynote Address: “The Gift of Watching Birds”
The practice of birding makes us whole. Well, it has the potential to set us on a path of finding our way into our place in the more–than-human community. Why do we do this thing called “birding”? Is it more than a new and hard-earned addition to a list? As we use our binocular vision and our ears in pursuit of our avian objectives, we become more than human ourselves. Our ears tune in to the bird sounds around us and our senses awaken to other cues. As my focus on birds has taught me much about this most intriguing group of fellow terrestrials, I have gained insight into my own species. What does the future hold for us as we witness our beloved species struggle through these times? I believe bird watchers hold more power over positive outcomes in an uncertain future than even we know. Following our hearts…where will we go? –- Karen Amstutz
SILENT AUCTION begins at 5:30 pm

Working together for Our Environment N
orthern California’s wetlands are a precious, yet scarce, resource. And while more than 95 percent of our wetlands have been lost, millions of waterfowl still make their home in the Central Valley. California rice growers work hand in hand with Ducks Unlimited to enhance and preserve habitat, keep rice farming viable and still meet waterfowl and human needs. Ducks Unlimited is continually developing waterfowl-friendly land management practices and California’s Ricelands not only provide virtually all of America’s sushi rice, they contribute billions of dollars to our economy each year. As people benefit, so do the ducks. California rice fields provide more than 60 percent of the food needed by wintering waterfowl, while DU’s on-the-ground conservation work provides wetlands habitat ducks need to flourish here in the Valley. Find out how you can partner with Ducks Unlimited and the California Rice Commission. Visit ducks.org and calrice.org.
