HISTORY & CULTURE
History OHIO RIVER
By Bill Doolittle
A Tale of a Few Cities
Winning independence from Great Britain opened North America and triggered the U.S.’s westward expansion. Down the Ohio River they came. Thousands of hopeful young Americans loaded their children, a few possessions, and maybe a goat, onto anything that would float.
They were bound for the Northwest Territory. Today, when you hear “frontier” you might automatically think of Arizona and California. But in the early 1800s, Indiana was America’s frontier. Settlements in Charlestown, New Albany, Clarksville, and Jeffersonville clung close to the Ohio River for safety, with Indian tribes still occupying lands north. Indiana filled from south to north, so early Hoosier history was made right here. You can still visit many sites that made Clark and Floyd Counties’ history. “People lament we’ve lost some of our old buildings,” says Floyd County Historian David Barksdale, “but we’re thrilled so many are left. Those beautiful old buildings have ignited a revival of downtown New Albany, providing
charm and history.” The story is similar in Jeffersonville with an intact downtown booming with interesting new businesses, dining, nightlife, and waterfront recreation. Much was spurred by the reopening of the 100-year-old Big Four Bridge as a modern hiking and biking pathway that connects Jeffersonville and Louisville. Between New Albany and Jeffersonville is Clarksville, where Revolutionary War hero Gen. George Rogers Clark built a log home above the Falls of the Ohio. Here he could keep track of who was coming up or down river. A handsome replacement cabin (the mighty river long ago plucked Clark’s original) gives you an idea of what life was like inside a prominent frontiersman’s home: pipes,
books, and a fireplace to warm guests in winters. Not that Clark minded winters. In the war, he led a force of frontier soldiers across icy swamps at night to capture the British fort at Vincennes to help America win its independence. In 1803, Clark’s younger brother, William Clark, met Meriwether Lewis. Together they led “The Corps of Discovery” westward on the Lewis and Clark Expedition. All that is recent history at the Falls of the Ohio. If you go back just a little farther—say 387 million years—you can visit the Falls of the Ohio State Park. Here you’ll discover how the ice age scoured the earth, revealing a great fossil plateau. The Falls of the Ohio – though not sheer and plunging like Niagara – are two miles of rough, rock-bound, tumbling rapids. You can just imagine early settlers taking one look at the roaring rapids and deciding this might be a good place to get off river and build a home.
THE STEAMBOAT LEGACY

building Howard family’s mansion is a wonderful museum of the steamboat era. graced with a broad center stairway with the gingerbread ornateness of the steamboat era. “All this wonderful woodwork was created by craftsmen from the Howard shipyard,” says curator Keith Norrington. “The steamboats were wooden, of course, and they built the interior of the mansion as they did for the grandest steamboats of

the era.” Also in Jeffersonville, the Vintage Fire Museum houses a wonderful fleet of bright red and chrome fire engines and a “hand pumper” built in 1756. Charlestown’s patriotic legacy began when Gen. William Henry Harrison, later President of the United States, gathered men for a militia to fight the War of 1812. Continued on page 8

His action secured the Northwest Territory. Indiana’s first governor, Jonathan Jennings, was from Charlestown. In 1816, Jennings hammered two important ideals into the state’s founding constitution: that there could be no slavery or indentured servitude in Indiana and the state would establish free education for all. Indiana’s constitution was the first of any state or country to affirm those principles. Steamboat building also flourished in New Albany, but the shipyards didn’t last. “The steamboat-building industries above the Falls were associated with the upper Ohio up to Pittsburgh,” says Barksdale. “New Albany was more associated with the river to the south. When the south lost the Civil War, the New Albany yards disappeared. The city didn’t miss a beat,” adds Barksdale. “All the associated industries survived, including furniture makers and glass works. The world’s first plate glass window, produced here by W.C. DePauw’s American Glass Works, was hung in a
window on Pearl Street.” New Albany was founded in 1813 by the Scribner Brothers, who anticipated the modern American city and planned the town with wide streets. The Scribners built homes and platted lots, setting aside sites for churches and schools. They even financed schools using a real estate sales fee. New Albany High School became the first high school in Indiana in 1853. Visitors may wish to visit the Padgett Museum, showcasing area Civil War-era history and the restored Division Street School, the oldest-standing African American school in Indiana. The Carnegie Center for Art and History’s special exhibit details local history where New Albany was a busy hub in the Underground Railroad that brought preCivil War slaves to freedom. The jewel of New Albany is the Culbertson Mansion, the family home of fabric importer and wholesaler, William Culbertson. The French Second Empire mansion boasts mansard roofs with rounded
glass windows and gilt painted ceilings. A high window of four glass panes of blue, red, clear and green seems almost too simple for the home. But they’re carefully designed; morning sunshine bathes the center hallway with changing prisms of every color. “The Culbertson story is much more than ‘rich man builds fabulous home,’” says director Jessica Stavros. “Culbertson was a dynamic leader. He was an associate of John Jacob Astor and helped build the K&I Bridge, which spans the Ohio River. He also founded New Albany’s electric utility, built the fresh water works for the city, and established shelters for the poor.” “When there was no formal museum,” said Stavros, “people would bring historical treasures to the Culbertson Mansion to preserve the city’s historical legacy.” That’s something people have done well in Clark and Floyd Counties.

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT
Staycation? NOT FOR ME! By Jenna Esarey
Ideas for Exploring Southern Indiana
I’ve never liked the idea of a ‘staycation.’ Why should I limit exploring my hometown to just once a year? With so much to see and do, why not explore year round?
I’ve seen Broadway-caliber plays. I’ve lounged along the Ohio River bank across from the Louisville skyline while being serenaded by musicians, and I’ve seen local artists’ works that have left me in awe. Here are some of my favorite ways to experience arts and entertainment in my own backyard.
MUSIC
From late spring to mid-fall my family and I are overwhelmed with choices for outdoor entertainment on weekend nights – most are completely free of charge. In Jeffersonville we can head to the RiverStage, a floating barge-converted into a performance venue. It sits, quite literally, on the Ohio River and is docked at the foot of Spring Street. The terraced lawn is perfect for spreading a blanket or
setting up camp chairs listening to local or regional rock-n-roll, blues, or country bands. Sometimes we head a few blocks inland to Warder Park for the Concert in the Park series. The park’s gazebo is the stage for everything from jazz to big band sounds. Hey, maybe this week we’ll catch the ragtime band! New Albany also hosts the Bicentennial Park Summer Concert Series. Bluegrass, Americana, rock, country, or tribute band – the Talking Heads cover band, Same As It Ever Was was a particular favorite with the Esarey clan last year – a wide mix of music is offered each season. Year-round the New Albany Production House hosts ticketed concerts ranging from rocking battle of the band-style shows to acoustic showcases. The Ogle Center at Indiana University Southeast is a wonderful venue for all
Derby Dinner Playhouse
types of performances. Visiting orchestras, magicians, bluegrass musicians, and the university’s music and theater departments fill the center.
THEATER
When we’re not in the mood for music, we’ve got theater. A vibrant high school theater scene is unique to this area. Jeffersonville, Floyd Central and New Albany High Schools have received national and international recognition. Students have a stepping stone to great community and professional theater in the area. One of the best community theaters going is the Clarksville Little Theatre. The 67-year-old stalwart’s 2015 schedule includes plays by the likes of Neil Simon and Dolly Parton. At the professional level, Clarksville’s Derby Dinner Playhouse is probably my favorite. The iconic dinner theater has been entertaining – and feeding – guests since 1974. From making it rain on stage in “Singing in the Rain” to flying actors through the air in “Mary Poppins,” Derby Dinner is a delight.
ART
Sometimes we just feel like wandering around and taking in the sights. JeffersonContinued on page 14

ville and New Albany have plenty of eye candy with their thriving, growing public art scenes. New Albany highlights a new theme each year in a public art project that began with the city’s recent bicentennial celebration. The theme for 2015 is Sustainability, coinciding with the Year of Environment and Sustainability. Also known as “YES! Fest,” this yearlong event series involves more than 100 arts and cultural organizations in Louisville and southern Indiana. In Jeffersonville, whimsical bicycle racks and creative Art Walk crosswalks greet pedestrians and bikers entering downtown via the Big Four Bridge. WE Studio’s Michael Wimmer created a bike rack shaped like a jack-in-the-box (a personal favorite). Wimmer’s New Albany studio and workshop is worth a visit. If we’re lucky, we’ll find him working on a sculpture in his converted service station studio, roller doors open to let in the breeze. Not far from the studio, the Arts Council of Southern Indiana nurtures art and art lovers. It features a gallery with rotating local artists’ exhibits, as well
as a gift shop full of quirky, fun items. Each year the council hosts events from film festivals to a monarch butterfly release. The Carnegie Center for Art & History in New Albany is one of the thousands of libraries funded by the Andrew Carnegie Foundation. It’s a frequent haunt of mine where I can see their permanent history exhibits plus rotating art shows including their annual “Form Not Function” art quilt show. Also housed at the Carnegie Center is “Grandpa Makes a Scene: The Yenawine Dioramas,” a classic folk art work featuring hand-carved mechanized figures engaging in activities from the 1800s. If I want to get creative myself, I head to Uptown Art in New Albany, where I can let my inner Picasso loose on a canvas of my own. The classes will help even the most uncreative type paint a work that you’ll be proud to hang on your wall. And you can enjoy a glass of wine during the classes. The Arts Council also hosts workshops in their newly renovated carriage house. Probably my favorite place to get cre-
ative is at Silica Ceramic Studio in Jeffersonville. The owners, both brilliant artists themselves, will help me paint, glaze, and create my own work of art using the raw ceramic pieces they stock. Just across the street is the Gadabout Gallery and Artisan Shoppe, owned by the same ladies. It’s a quirky, fun store selling funky refinished furniture, fine hats from a skilled milliner, beautifully handcrafted note cards, and much more. New Albany’s Copper Moon Gallery, owned by the creator of the annual Art in Speed Park outdoor art exhibit, features art works from brilliantly talented local and regional artists, including the most comfortable, unique and beautiful wooden chair I have ever seen. Both galleries feature rotating inventories so each time I visit it’s a new experience. Whether I’m looking for something to hang on the wall or from my earlobe I’ll find something unique, interesting and beautiful at one of these shops. So, the staycation? All well and good, but I think Southern Indiana has so much to more to explore.

Where to eat in Southern Indiana
Part of the fun in a weekend getaway or a business trip is discovering great local restaurants. We sent local food lover Jessica Mattson in search of great dining spots. Here are her recommendations when you visit Southern Indiana’s Clark and Floyd Counties.
BRUNCH
Red Yeti Brewing Company
Joe Huber Family Restaurant
Couples go to brunch. Is that cliché? Maybe, but I’m OK with that. I love it, and I drag my fiancé (not always unwillingly) to brunch as often as I can. I found several delicious options if you want to partake in one of my favorite Sunday morning rituals. I was surprised to find so many brunch spots: the Bristol Bar & Grille, Buckhead Mountain Grill, Red Yeti Brewery (yes, they serve brunch), Olive Leaf Bistro, Toast on Market, Bread and Breakfast, Louis Le Francais, even IHOP and Panera Bread offer brunch. Not an early riser? Don’t
worry. Buckhead Mountain Grill, Olive Leaf Bistro, Red Yeti, and Toast on Market continue their brunches well into afternoon. I think Toast on Market in New Albany has one of the best brunches going. Their luscious lemon soufflé pancakes are topped with blueberry compote and lemon custard. Toast also serves an omelet special. Each time you go, you’ll have something new to try. Seasonal drinks complement specials such as gingerbread pancakes with delicious apple cider mimosa during the holidays and other inventive dishes.

DINING New to Jeffersonville in 2014, Olive Leaf Bistro serves a buffet-style brunch with variations on standard brunch options. Choose from chicken soup, eggs benedict, biscuits and gravy, bacon, sausage, Greek potatoes, sausage rigatoni, or even build your own crepe. I chose the crepes filled with raspberries covered in a vanilla cream sauce, but I still regret not saving room for one filled with strawberries and covered in chocolate sauce. Since we’re talking brunch, let’s talk coffee. At Olive Leaf Bistro, I stopped short as I took a sip of my piping hot coffee that had a chocolaty flavor I fell in love with. Buckhead Mountain Grill in Jeffersonville offers a brunch buffet as good as any I’ve tasted. Along with more traditional offerings, the cooks make waffles right before your eyes, with optional ingredients and toppings. I’m now a big fan. Candied pecans were the easy choice for me. If waffles don’t satisfy your sweet tooth, you’re in luck. Buckhead’s has a large table covered with delectable desserts.
LUNCH
New Albany’s The Exchange Pub + Kitchen is a personal favorite of mine, especially its steak frites; and locals seem to agree. Originally, The Exchange was in a small strip mall, and it was always full and bustling. It moved to its larger current location on Main Street and still bustles with eager diners. Showcasing a seasonal menu using local goods, The Exchange make specialty drinks in house that also vary by season. The highlight of their casual afternoon menu is the meatloaf sandwich. I know what you’re thinking, but don’t dismiss the meatloaf. It was a-ma-zing! Served on sourdough toast with a tomato marmalade, it made my mouth water just smelling it. The meatloaf itself was perfectly moist with just a hint of spice at the end. And this wasn’t even what I ordered. I had the bacon sliders with fries. As always, I was blown away by the taste of these little morsels. I ordered two, and they were topped with bacon, of course,
but also with mustard, pickled onions, and arugula. They’re far better than any sliders I’d had before. But I am still thinking of that meatloaf sandwich. Next time I go, I’ll order it. Right next door, is a place you must try if you like barbecue: Feast BBQ. I highly recommend the pork cake appetizer. They’re like crab cakes, not cupcakes. They come two to an order in a pan filled with barbecue sauce and covered with coleslaw, which is all you will need for a reasonable lunch. If your lunch companion is up for sharing, I recommend the pork tacos, either Mexican- or American-style. Both are mouth-wateringly good. Mexicanstyle is prepared with cilantro and lime, while American-style comes with creamy coleslaw and Feast’s original sauce. For sides, take my advice and get the mac and cheese. It’s not your standard version. It’s creamy and cheesy with a crumble topping that adds great texture and flavor.

DINNER
Charlie Noble’s Eatery and Draught House, opened in Sellersburg recently. This beach-themed eatery and bar just off of Interstate 65 will make you think you’ve stepped back into your last beach vacation. Surf boards hang from the bright, tropical blue and green walls. We settled into an appetizer, Island Nachos, ordered our burgers, and decided that Charlie Noble’s has it all. A massive beer list, outdoor seating, game room, and live music on weekend nights (played covers of everything from Johnny Cash to the Foo Fighters). For groups that want to share, they even have “fish bowls,” 54-ounce specialty drinks with their own twist on margaritas, sangria, and daiquiris. In May 2014, Red Yeti Brewing Company opened in Jeffersonville. They brew their own beer, have guest brews, and they make all their meals from scratch – even the bread. Their standout is a brisket sandwich, served with bacon onion jam, and the taco sampler gives you some tasty variety all in one plate. I’m loving all the dining options I have in my own back yard. I hope you’ll like my recommendations. Happy sampling!

Breweries bubbled up in Clark and Floyd Counties in 2014. New Albany’s first brewery, aptly named the New Albanian, is now joined by Jeffersonville’s Red Yeti Brewing Company and Indianapolis-based Flat 12 Bierwerks. Word is that New Albany will add two new tap rooms in 2015: Floyd County Brewery and Donum Dei Brewery.
NEW RESTAURANTS
HUBER FAMILY EXPANDS STARLIGHT OPERATIONS The Huber family, long known for its orchards, winery, and vineyards, expanded its operations to include a distillery in 2001. Though a brandy was released in 2004, Huber’s Starlight Distillery celebrated its grand opening in December 2014, and introduced its vodka, 1843 gin, and bourbon whiskey to the southern Indiana market. Located on the grounds of the orchard and winery, the distillery will continue to expand and add new authentic craft spirits.
New restaurants sprung up on Spring Street in Jeffersonville in 2014. Big Four Burgers and Beer, Red Yeti Brewing Company, and nearby Olive Leaf Bistro and Sweets by Morgan joined the list of local eateries serving delectable fare. Jeffersonville will welcome another restaurant to Spring Street in 2015: O’Shea’s Irish Pub, a Louisville favorite. Seeds & Greens Natural Market and Deli sprouted up in New Albany fall 2014. The market opened in a renovated historic building and sells organic, vegan, gluten-free, and local foods. The deli serves breakfast, lunch, and to-go dinners. Jeffersonville’s popular Big Four Burgers and Beer will open a New Albany location in 2015.
