There is compelling evidence about the power of prayer. You likely have a personal testimony or two about God’s intervention after conversation with Him about a given need. The Bible is full of examples of people who were in trouble and called upon the name of the Lord. Jesus prayed more than anyone. That alone should give us a clue about the power of talking to God. The Apostle Paul did as well, and subsequently wrote nearly 3/4 of the New Testament. The ethnos in this community is quite diverse. Blacks, Whites, Hispanics and Asians alike all make up our great city and bring a unique perspective when it comes to prayer. The beautiful thing about our respective cultures is that each represents a version of the glory of God; and when we come together in the Spirit, great things happen! On Saturday September 14, 2013, Villa Rica will experience the power of unifying prayer at the Mill. There, church congregations and people who love God will gather to pray for our City, Mayor, City Council, Hospital workers, Police and Fire Department as well as for the business owners and citizens. We who claim Jesus, serve the same God who wants unity among His children. There are probably 101 reasons why Blacks, Whites, Hispanics and every other ethnos here should Pray. Let’s look at 5 in addition to the reasons stated above. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Prayer Produces Intimacy Prayer Humbles our Heart Prayer Makes Us more Sensitive to Others Prayer Reveals some of what God is Thinking Prayer Puts Pressure on the Devil who wants to put Pressure on You

In a very brief manner, consider the following explaination to these reasons: 1. It is difficult to stay angry at someone with whom we share intimacy. 2. An intentional conversation with God who is invisible, positions one’s heart toward submission. The very act of praying to God implies we need Him. 3. God knows us better than we know ourselves. He likewise knows the person about whom we pray. This exposure heightens our perseptive/inner-man to be more useful to other people. 4. The mind of Christ is revealed through God’s word and when we pray His word, we by default pray God’s thoughts. 5. Satan wants us to talk about our problems, knowing full well it will NOT provide soulutions. When we talk to God about our challenges, Satan can no longer convince us of a hopeless situation.

Through this activity, each contributing culture will benefit the other for the greater good. This week, pray for someone from a different race, background or church. The power of this type of prayer strategy, will liberate us from bias, strengthen our divine resolve and unify our kindship in the Body of Christ. Please pray for us! We too will be praying for you!

Snore much?

Snoring can be more than irritating – it can be dangerous. Obstructive sleep apnea, or OSA, affects as many as 18 million Americans. Symptoms include severe daytime sleepiness, loud snoring, trouble concentrating when awake and others. Untreated, it can lead to high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke. The only way to diagnose and treat it is with a sleep study. The fully accredited Tanner Center for Sleep Disorders — with locations in Carrollton and Villa Rica — can help, providing comfortable, hotel-like amenities and a certified staff of sleep technologists and medical directors who are board-certified in sleep medicine.

Solve the Snoring! All you need to schedule your sleep study at Tanner is an order form from your doctor. To find a doctor on Tanner’s medical staff, call 770.214.CARE.

Do your bedmate a favor: stop stealing the covers, and ask your doctor about a sleep study at Tanner. www.TannerSleep.org

It seems sometimes that the general public thinks there is some kind of magic that takes place after admission to a care facility that makes people who fell before suddenly not fall or people who didn’t take their medicine at home suddenly want to cooperate and be compliant. It generally doesn’t work that way. I have had residents in my career that refused to bathe; absolutely refused and could not be cajoled or bribed or prodded or in any way convinced that bathing was good for them. I can just hear you saying, “What!? Can’t you MAKE them take a bath?!” The answer is no. We can’t. We take care of grown-ups in a place that is the only home they have left. Our residents are adults, not babies. Sure, they are not always rational. Sometimes they are downright irrational. But they’re still adults. We have residents who refuse to take medicine (which sometimes is related to the refusal of baths), refuse to eat, refuse to have their wounds cared for and refuse to allow anyone in their room. By David Steen, Moving Coordinator, All Star Movers, 770.577.2142, davidsteen@bellsouth.net With material and labor, packing costs can be as much as the move. So, in these hard economic times, more families are packing them selves. Hopefully this month’s tip will help you in your upcoming moving adventure. First off, I recommend using standard moving boxes available at Home Depot, Lowe’s, or your local moving company. Deals can also be found online. Personally, I think bubble wrap is overrated and prefer to use packing paper. Used correctly, paper is very effective. Number one rule of packing - if it rattles, it’s wrong. So make sure to use lots of paper. Label your boxes, labeling what’s in the box and what room it will ultimately end up in. Make sure the box is taped really well. Also, don’t pack too much in a box or place heavy items in large boxes. You will have more leverage, plus it will be easier to carry, if you back

paper and line the bottom with a good layer of cushion. Then, start with plates. Wrap each plate in a sheet of paper and place in box vertically on its edge (NOT FLAT). Go all the way across. Once you have reached the other side, you will have space on each side. Here you can wrap silverware to use as a filler, or other odds and ends. This space must be filled with something, even paper. Once this layer is full, put another layer of paper cushion and repeat this process, if you have more plates. Now, with two layers of plates in, there should be enough space for a standard size glass or cup on the end. Wrap each item and place them in tightly together. Try to use all same sizes first, then finish off with paper. There should be no room for movement. Close the box up and tape it well. With fine China you will want to put fewer items into the box and use more paper. Tupperware can go in large boxes. Heaver items, such as skillets, can go in medium boxes. Still use paper to fill the box up completely. This helps when you start stacking the boxes into the moving van.

From Local Artist Sally Storey Jones Vist her website: sally-storey-jones.artistwebsites.com In 1882 the Georgia Pacific Railroad, which connected Atlanta and Greenville, Mississippi, was extended through the area later known as Villa Rica, Georgia. Residents of Hixtown and Chevestown relocated their homes and stores to the railroad area, by rolling houses and stores on logs pulled by horses. Hixtown had over 2,000 residents, a tavern and a general supply store. New houses and businesses were built, and in 1883 the residents established a new town, “Villa Rica,” which translates to “city of gold.” More than 19 active gold mines were located in Hixtown. The town of Villa Rica was laid out in a gridiron pattern with the railroad line running east to west through the center of the business district. A railroad depot was built to accommodate passengers, freight and livestock. Southern Railroad operated the railroad line after 1894.

Training Your Dog By Dee Wilkie, Clever Canidae Dog Training, 770.337.7771, www.clevercanidae.com

Dogs are not born knowing how to live in our human world, so they must be taught. Imagine if you were visiting a foreign country and did not know the language or the customs. That is how it is for dogs when they enter our homes. Dog training creates a mutual language so that they can understand what we want and expect from them. Just saying “no” every time they do something inappropriate without giving them a positive alternative will be frustrating for you and your dog. Teaching them appropriate behaviors and commands will make life more enjoyable for the whole family. For example, one of the most common dog behavior problems is jumping up on people. Dogs jump up for attention, so if you give them attention (even negative attention), they are being rewarded for that behavior. The best way to discourage jumping is to ignore your dog until he stops jumping, then give him lots of affection when he has all four paws on the floor. While you are teaching this behavior, it isn’t always practical to ignore your dog while he jumps on you. During times when you know he will be likely to jump up, attach a leash to his collar, place it on the floor and stand on it. Give him just enough slack to stand comfortably, then when he jumps, the leash will correct him. Do not look at him or talk to him until he stops. When he stops, bend or squat to his level and give him affection

Pet Care Tip

By Bark Avenue Salon, 4719-A Carrollton-Villa Rica Highway,

770.214.8404 Summertime is here, and so are “summer cuts” and shedding

Dogs have given us their absolute all. We are the center of their universe. We are the focus of their love and faith and trust. They serve us in return for scraps. It is without a doubt the best deal man has ever made. ~ Roger Caras

pets. Just because you have a long-coated pet, like a great pyrenees or a drop coated havenese, doesn’t mean that they can not get a “summer cut”. Matter of fact, any breed of dog or cat can receive one. Now, whether you or your pet like it is yet to be decided. Not all summer cuts are to the skin on your pets - some can be 1/4 inch long to six inches long depending on what breed and texture of the hair your pet has. Are you finding hair on your clothes, couch and in the corners of your house? With the temperature changing, your pets are prone to shed more than usual this time of year. Good brushings, baths and proper blow outs always help, but do not stop the shedding. This is a natural process that pets go through to adjust or protect their body temperature. You can even give a summer cut to your boxer, lab and pug. This will help shedding as well. They don’t stop shedding, but it helps them not shed as much and that means you won’t be chasing as many hair bunnies around your home. Remember to always consult your pet stylist on making changes to keep you and your pet happy and healthy. and praise. He will soon figure out that he gets what he wants if he stays down. Reinforce the good behavior every time if he approaches you without jumping, and you will extinguish the bad behavior. It is easy to become frustrated with your dog when it seems like he just won’t listen. Keep your expectations realistic, and set small goals when you first begin training. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and your dog will not become perfectly reliable overnight. Also, the longer the behavior has existed, the longer it will take to become extinct. Be patient, be consistent, and reward your dog for his achievements, and you will be successful.

State Officials Name Southwire Manufacturer of the Year

Heralding the company’s innovation, commitment to quality and

community building efforts, Georgia officials today honored Southwire Company as large manufacturer of the year as part of the statewide Manufacturing Appreciation Week. Hosted by the Georgia Department of Economic Development and the Technical College System of Georgia, the annual awards recognize the state’s top manufacturers in small, medium and large categories, based in employment. Georgia Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle presented the awards. “Thanks to the state of Georgia. This is a terrific place to be headquartered and to have our largest factories and distribution centers,” said Southwire president and CEO Stu Thorn, who accepted the award with Southwire Vice Chairman Lee Richards, son of company founder Roy Richards, Sr. “Georgia has a world-class education system, including some of the best technical colleges and universities in the country. The weather is great, the people are welcoming and the culture fits perfectly with our family values.” “On behalf of my 5,500 coworkers, thanks to the Richards for allowing us to be part of the extended family,” Thorn added, also thanking Southwire’s people for their efforts to make the company a top manufacturer. “This award is yours. You’re the ones who earned it.” Officials highlighted Southwire’s education and workforce development partnerships - including 12 for Life, the Southwire Engineering Academy, the Southwire Center for Manufacturing Excellence and the Southwire Sustainable Business Honors Program - as evidence of its commitment to building stronger communities. The company also was recognized for its Project GIFT team of employee volunteers, as well as its annual Back-to-School supply giveaway, which reached some 5,000 students on 2012. “We love the process of manufacturing, and we love manufacturing here in Georgia,” Richards said. “Georgia has provided us with the right environment in which to grow our business and, more importantly, Georgia has provided us with a wonderful workforce. On behalf of my siblings, thank you for this award.” Southwire, based in Carrollton, Ga., was recognized along with its Douglas, Ga. plant for its “commitment to innovation, empowerment and excellence,” according to the remarks read when the award was announced. The company was nominated by West Georgia Technical College in Carrollton and Wiregrass Technical College in Douglas. Southwire also has two distribution centers in Villa Rica, Ga. and plans to open new manufacturing plants in Douglas and Villa Rica this year. The other award winners announced at today’s cermony were Nordson Corporation in Swainsboro (151-500 employees) and DIRTT Environmental Solutions in Savannah (150 employees or fewer).

Ants Are No Picnic

They may be small, but they can cause big problems. Ants enter your home through the tiniest cracks. While doing so, they leave behind a scent so others of their like can follow the trail to food. Ants are pests around the home because they feed on and contaminate human foods, infest structures and build unsightly mounds in lawns. In some cases, ants are able to inflict painful bites or stings.

mary function of the queen ant is reproduction. The queen may live for many years and is usually replaced by the daughter queen. Ants may have only one queen. These ants are called monogyne ants. Depending on the species, many ants have more than one queen. These ants are called polygyne.

the species. The function of the worker is to construct, repair and de-

be started by flights of winged reproductives or by budding the colony. The most common method of establishing a new colony is for the male and female reproductive ants to leave the nest on mating flights. The newly mated queen then constructs a cavity or cell and rears a brood without the aid of workers. The colony grows in size and numbers as more young are produced. Budding occurs when one or more queens leave the nest accompanied by worker ants who aid in establishing and caring for the new ant colony. Some of the most difficult ant species to control spread by budding. Certain fire ant species, pharaoh ants, ghost ants, and Argentine ants spread colonies by budding. Most ants eat a variety of foods, although some have specialized food habits. Fire ants feed on honeydew, sugars, proteins, oils, seeds, plants and other insects. Crazy ants like sugars, proteins and insects. Carpenter ants prefer sugars and insects. Ants locate food sources by random foraging. When a scouting ant finds promising food, she carries it back to the nest. Other workers become excited and follow her to the nest. Then they follow scent trails back to the food source. Ants will travel great distances to get water. Workers are able to carry water to the colony in their stomachs. The best approach to ant control in the home is cleanliness. Any type of food or particles can attract and provide food for the ants. Food should be stored in tight containers. Remove plants that attract ants or control aphids, whiteflies and other insects that produce honeydew. Reduce moisture sources, including condensation and leaks. Location of the nest is key to the control of ants because they are social insects. Killing large numbers of individual ants may never solve the problem. It is important to identify the species of ants prior to controlling the problem. Knowing the species will give you important clues to the habits of the ant and potential sources of the nest for long term control and colony elimination

Nail Care Pointers

By Jeanne Grace Curtis, Nails Your Way, 770.949.3113, nailsyourway.com

Beautify Your Feet With sandal season approaching, it is important to beautify your feet. A relaxing monthly pedicure will treat both the toenails and the skin on the feet. If you suffer from corns, calluses, ingrown toenails, fungus, athlete’s foot or diseases such as diabetes or arthri-

tis then monthly pedicures help to keep your feet healthy as well as beautiful. Your feet need individual attention. Just like your face, your feet are different from everyone else’s. Forty-three million Americans say their feet hurt and that they have some kind of problem with their feet. There are a lot of feet out there in dire need of attention and pampering. Shoes are often the biggest offenders. Wearing the wrong size, style and shape of shoes can cause numerous foot problems. Ingrown toenails are the most common. Ingrown toenails can lead to serious problems if not taken care of correctly. Usually, toenails grow straight out, but sometimes, one or both corners curve and grow into the flesh. The corners dig painfully into the soft tissue of the nail grooves, often leading to irritation, redness, and swelling. The big toe is the most common casualty, but other toes can also become ingrown. The shape of the nail is usually inherited, but it is commonly influenced by trauma or shoe pressure. Tight footwear will increase pressure between the skin in the nail fold and nail, increasing the risk of ingrown nails. An experienced, professional Nail Tech will know exactly what to do to minimize the pain and speed up the healing. The skin on the feet is particularly vulnerable to dryness. As we age, oil-producing glands slow down production, causing skin to become thin and dry. Not only does dry skin make the feet look older, it also increases susceptibility to foot infections. It is important to keep the feet moisturized with a thick rich lotion daily. Knowledgeable, qualified pedicurists will never cut or nip delicate skin. They use scrubs and foot files to gently exfoliate the dry skin on the heels and bottom of the feet. They use alpha-hydroxy cream to remove cuticle. The improper practice of nipping or cutting the cuticles will make them grow back quicker and thicker. When you choose a pedicurist be sure that they do not nip or cut your cuticles. A good pedicure ends with a foot and leg massage. The foot and leg massage improves blood circulation. Optimal blood circulation decreases the chances of developing skin and nail problems in the feet. Choose a salon that you can trust. Be sure that your salon diligently follows state guidelines for safe footbath cleansing and disinfecting procedures. Monthly pedicures can dramatically soften and heal callus-prone feet. Monthly pedicures will help to prevent fungal infections. A little time and attention will keep your feet looking and feeling good. You will also gain health benefits such as skin renewal, reduced stress, and improved circulation.

I Have A Model In I Corinthians 11:1 the Apostle Paul says to be imitators of him as he is of Christ. Basically, he was saying model your life after mine. Being a model is a huge responsibility. It is something to be taken seriously. It is an opportunity to greatly impact a life for good or evil. Clearly being a role model can have major implications in the lives of others. I have been so blessed to have a godly model in my life. She has demonstrated the love of Christ and the love of family. Words of wisdom and insight are given when I have faced struggles in life. She encourages me in my faith by sharing truths from God’s Word. Through the years she had taken notice of my likes and habits and has given generous, thoughtful gifts. She has treasured my children and loved them well. She has invested time and effort to create beautiful memories for my family. We are truly blessed to have her in our lives. I see glimpses of her in my children from their creativity to their artistic abilities. She has provided a rich heritage for her family. My hope and prayer is that one day I will be able to be the motherin-law to my children’s spouses as my mother-in-law has been to me. I am so thankful I have had a godly model of a wife and mother in my life. Proverbs 31:28 says, “Her children rise up and call her blessed” - or in my case her daughter-in-law. When Did We Change? Matthew 14:28-30 (Message Translation) Peter, suddenly bold, said, “Master, if it’s really you, call me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come ahead.” Jumping out of the boat, Peter walked on the water to Jesus. But when he looked down at the waves churning beneath his feet, he lost his nerve and started to sink. He cried, “Master, save me!” A few days ago Sheryll and I were spending an afternoon with our two youngest grandchildren. We stopped by Target to let them pick out a toy. Anthony, the three year old, was holding my hand as we walked toward the toy section when it occurred to me that he walked differently than I do. Ever notice the way little kids walk? They don’t really walk—it’s more like they throw themselves forward and expect their feet to catch up. They lean their whole bodies toward the direction they want to go and then fling every fiber of their being forward with gusto. If you’re

Jesus challenges a boat full of disciples to get out of the boat and walk on water. Only Peter tries. Only Peter plunges ahead recklessly. Yes, he started sinking, but he walked on water! I bet when he got back in the boat the other disciples had a moment like mine with Anthony—noticing the difference in the way Peter walked and they way they did. They may have even said, “I knew you would sink. I knew you would get wet.” But you know on the inside they were wishing they had done it, wishing they had stepped out on the water—wishing they were wet water-walkers rather than dry boat-sitters. I’m not advocating that we abandon safety. I’m not sug-

The Lifetree Café experience is a scheduled hour of “stories and conversations to feed the soul,” according to local director Dale Windsor. The hour typically includes a short original film and guided conversation. A local host directs the hour. “It’s sort of like a live, local talk show—with an inspirational twist,” Windsor said. Topics, which change weekly, focus on popular life issues. Topics may include such things as loneliness, immigration, health, angels, guilt, prayer, and life after death. The exclusive documentary-style films feature everyday people with unusual stories, as well as nationally known figures. National Lifetree Café founder Thom Schultz said, “We engage people of all ages in a national conversation through local Lifetree Cafés as well as a robust online presence.” The organization’s website, LifetreeCafe.com, invites visitors to participate online. “Lifetree serves as a comfortable place to meet other people who are interested in the same issues.” Schultz said, “The atmosphere resembles a warm, neighborhood coffee shop. The experience gives people practical help and insight on life issues,” Lifetree Café will be offered at 7pm every Saturday. Admission to the 60-minute events is free. Snacks and beverages are available. Questions about Lifetree Cafe may be directed to Jon Price at 770.459.5138 or jon@fbcvr.com.

The Families First “Back to School” Consignment Sale & Expo will be hosted by Central Baptist Church in Douglasville on July 18th – July 20th. All net proceeds from the Consignment Sale will benefit A Gift of Love, a local 501c3 Charity that serves needy families in our area. The Families First “Back to School” Expo will be held on Saturday, July 20th from 9am - to 4pm. Event organizer John Grey stated, “Our goal with the Expo is to welcome family friendly businesses to showcase their goods and services to area residents as they prepare to send their children back to school.” Grey went on to say, “Even if your children or grandchildren are not of school age yet, you still do not want to miss this extraordinary community event that promises to provide something for everyone including inflatables, games, face painting, vendor booths, food vendors, door prizes and the area’s largest consignment sale.” The Families First “Back to School” Consignment Sale will begin on Thursday, July 18th from 2pm-7pm with a “Private Preview Sale”

Consignors will pay a $10 flat sellers fee and 30% for all items that sell. The Families First “Back to School” Consignment Sale is expected to be the largest ever held in the West Georgia area, with hundreds of families and several churches participating. Churches will have the opportunity to raise money for youth programs or mission funds if Consignors choose to donate their consignor portion to the church of their choice. Churches will also compete in the “Church Challenge”, which will reward $1,000 to the Church that is credited with the most money raised for A Gift of Love through consignments. Safe Alert.” Follow our advice to tell a legitimate sales call from a telemarketing scam. How the Scam Works: You receive a prerecorded telemarketing call pitching a personal emergency alarm system. The alarm, warns the recording, is necessary to protect against a long list of dangers, such as break-ins and medical emergencies. It claims that you can get an alarm system worth several hundred dollars installed for free. You are just responsible for a monthly charge of about $30. The recording prompts you to press a button and speak to a live person for “verification.” However, victims reported that staff refuse to provide basic business information, such as the address. The exact details of the scam vary. The alarm business goes by a variety of names, including “Senior Emergency Care,” “Senior Safety

If a call does the following, it’s probably a scam: • Tries to create a sense of panic. In this case, the call alarms seniors by describing a situation where they are incapacitated at home and cannot call for help. Also watch out for calls that push for immediate action. • Promises something for free... that really isn’t. Be wary of “free” offers that ask you to pay a handling fee or other charges. • Implies an endorsement from a well-known organization. In this case, the call claims the alarm system is endorsed by the American Heart Association and the “American Diabetic Association,” which is really the “American Diabetes Association.” Others claim a good BBB rating, so be sure to check this on BBB.org.

Poor Sleep Could Leave Your Heart at Risk By Bonnie Boles, MD, Tanner Lung and Sleep Specialists. Dr. Boles is board-certified in sleep medicine, pulmonary medicine and critical care medicine with Tanner Lung and Sleep Specialists, a part of Tanner Medical Group. Insomnia—trouble falling or staying asleep—affects as many as onethird of all adults. For a study published in the journal Circulation, more than 50,000 Norwegian men and women reported their sleep habits over an 11-year period. According to the findings, heart attack risk was increased: • 45 percent among people who regularly had trouble falling asleep

• Exercise regularly. But stop at least two to three hours before bedtime. • Ask your doctor about your prescriptions. Some medicines, including those for blood pressure or asthma, interfere with sleep. • Set your body’s clock. Spend at least 30 minutes in natural sunlight each day. Go to bed and get up at the same time each day, even on the weekends. • Talk with your doctor if you regularly have trouble falling or staying asleep, or if you wake up feeling like you haven’t slept at all. If these steps don’t help, you may benefit from a sleep study.
